The user is a contractor that was hired by a construction company to organize their databases. This user had some programming experience, but nothing related to mobile or app development. The user needed a tool that he could use to track inventory within the company. After considering and trying out many other app builders, he found that AppSheet would best fit his need due to its simplicity and ease of use. This user highly recommends AppSheet and highlights their very responsive support team and community.

BACKGROUND

Can you please provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

I was hired as an inventory manager for a construction company to get everything organized.

CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge your company was facing that initiated the need for this platform?

The construction company didn’t have an inventory system or database. I was looking for something that would be easy to use. I have some database programming experience but nothing in the mobile field and I was looking for an app that would be really easy. None of the apps I found were sufficient. I couldn’t modify them to do what I wanted to do. Then I found AppSheet. It’s in the rapid development stage now and they’re making changes all the time.

SOLUTION

How does your company implement this platform or software?

When I started with AppSheet, it was very early in their development phase so the product was kind of basic. I was able to customize it and get it to do what I wanted it to do. They have a really good community for getting support directly from the programmers. I’m able to go to them and ask them for a certain feature and they’re on it. Everything that I’ve ever asked for, is either already done or it’s in the pipeline.

Was your company considering other platforms? Why this platform?

I honestly don’t remember how I found AppSheet. When I first started using it the product was in the very early stage. I wasn’t sure that I was going to continue to use it. It didn’t really do what I wanted it to do. I looked around for some other app builders. I downloaded a few different apps to see what was out there. Eventually, I went back to using AppSheet because none of the other apps were as customizable. I also tried a few other platforms for app creation but they were all too complicated for me. AppSheet is super simple. They have a mechanism where you can create a form using Google Forms and it automatically turns it into an app. Then you tweak things if you need to.

On an annual or monthly basis, how much does your company spend to utilize the platform?

There are only two users that I have. I’ve elected to do the publisher plan. It offers the ability to store up all the different changes you make and you can sync them all in one shot instead of one at a time. For that I think it is $5 or $10 per user per month.

RESULTS

Can you share any success, metrics, or overall results of your implementation of this platform?

I was able to create this inventory management app for this construction company and it has helped leaps and bounds around here. We now have actual inventory tracking. We’ve been able to notice patterns because of the data that we’re collecting through AppSheet. It’s all really simple to use and that’s the real benefit of AppSheet. It’s very intuitive.

FEATURES

Were there any software features/tools that you were really impressed by?

The thing that really stands out with AppSheet is that they’re in this rapid development stage right now. The fact that I can ask if there’s a way to do what I want, and sometimes the answer is no, but often they’ll build the feature into the product. It’s that integration with the developers. We have the ability to shape where this platform is going.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software that you feel could be added or improved upon?

What I’m looking forward to is the ability to use complex and dynamic functions and formulas to auto generate other data from whatever your users are putting in. AppSheet has slowly started to roll that out and it’s getting more and more complex every day. You can make these complex formulas in Google Sheets or Excel and I’m looking forward to the day when AppSheet will support the ability to do things like that.

Have you had to interact with the platform’s support team or reference their support resources?

AppSheet has rapid response when it comes to support. For instance, this morning I had a client come to me and he wants to do a specific thing and I wasn’t sure how to do it, so I went to the community and posed the question online. It was 12 minutes later that I had a response from the AppSheet team answering my question. They’re great about being very precise with their responses. Also they’re very transparent about how their platform actually functions.

OVERVIEW

To sum up: We have a few quick questions, and for each question we ask you to rate the software on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best.

What would you give the software for functionality of the features available?

Four. That’s because it’s so early in their creation.

What would you give the software for ease of use or ease of implementation into your business?

Five.

For support, as in responsiveness of the team or helpfulness of the resources available?

Five.

Overall, satisfaction with the platform?

Four.

How likely are you to recommend the software to a colleague or similar business?

Five.

The user of AppSheet is an entrepreneur located in Turkey who has now developed six applications using AppSheet. This user has developed apps for training, medical, and financial purposes, and three of these apps the user has been able to monetize. The user highly recommends AppSheet as a do-it-yourself app development software. The user comments that the platform is improving on a daily basis and the team behind the platform is his largest reason for recommending AppSheet.

BACKGROUND

Can you please provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

I'm an architect by trade, but I use AppSheet in my private life. I am located in Turkey.

SOLUTION

How have you implemented AppSheet?

I'm a certified motorcycle instructor. I develop apps for motorcycle training companies. My wife is a medical surgeon, and I've developed an app for her hospital. I have prepared a private app for individuals to track their savings and money transfers. It's been five or six months since joining the AppSheet community, in that time I have developed six or seven apps, three of them I've been able to monetize.

How did you come across AppSheet? Did you consider any other app builders?

I randomly came across AppSheet while searching Google. I just logged in and tested the platform.

FEATURES

Were there any software features or tools that really impressed you?

Every platform has advantages and disadvantages. AppSheet is a great platform for mobile app development. They're improving their platform every day. I believe they have a great team behind the scenes, and their teamwork shows it. They also have a Google community page. I always read the posts and answer others' posts when I can.

One of the best parts of AppSheet is that you don't have to be an IT [information technology] guy or have knowledge of any programming languages like C++ or Java. It's a do-it-yourself app platform. What you see is what you get. You simply put everything in a Google doc, and then you're able to create a mobile app and fine-tune it. It's a unique platform. I adore it.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software upon which you feel could be added or improved?

I don't think there are any features missing, but I don't know much about the back-end of the platform. The developers in the community have many requests AppSheet really makes an effort to meet everybody's needs. They work hard at making everybody happy. That's very important for me. I appreciate what they have done so far.

Have you had to interact with the platform's support team or reference their support resources?

The team behind AppSheet works hard to answer the needs of the community. As a user, I am always talking with the support team to discuss what can be improved. They're kind and eager to learn what users think.

The user of AppSheet is one of the lead organizers for her large church's annual service project. On an annual  basis  this church plans a service event that involves over 1,000 attendees and it becomes tough to manually track all of the moving pieces of the event. This user has a background in using databases, so was looking for a tool that could leverage her background as well as be simple for other members to use. This user highly recommends AppSheet as a do-it-yourself app software tool for their constant upgrades and highly responsive support team.

BACKGROUND

Can you please provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

My business background is in proprietary databases from a corporate and a financial reporting perspective. I'm retired now.

CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge your company was facing that initiated the need for this platform?

My church was looking for an affordable database software. Annually, we have an event where about 1,200 people come together and we do about 60 different service projects. They can range from construction, teaching children arts and crafts, to yard work; all sorts of different things. There is a church membership sign up for different projects and it is very difficult to manage all the different moving pieces and we needed a way to do it.

SOLUTION

How does your company implement this platform or software?

I've used AppSheet for personal use but my initial use of AppSheet was to help with a big service project for my church. We used it at the very minimum this past year but next year we are going all out with AppSheet.

Was your company considering other platforms? Why this platform?

I’ve always been interested in database software. I've always wanted to find a database software that was useable and quick to learn, and AppSheet is just that. I found AppSheet about 3 weeks before our service project this past year. It was in early June and I was scrambling to try to put all the information together in the right format, and learn the software to be able to make it useful.

On an annual or monthly basis, how much does your company spend to utilize the platform?

AppSheet didn't cost much at all because we only rolled it out for a few people. We have a leadership team that does a lot of the planning and that sort of thing. We probably spent less than $20 since we are a nonprofit, and we also used it for a short period of time, so we didn't have it the whole year. We deployed it to a few people that needed it and then we scaled our use back for the times when we didn't need it as much. Next year we are looking at rolling it out to all of our project leads. That's 60-70 people that haven't been exposed to it before.

RESULTS

Can you share any success, metrics, or overall results of your implementation of this platform?

Bottom line is that I really can’t say enough nice things about AppSheet - they have a great product with new features added almost weekly, a supportive and responsive team, sample apps, documentation and videos to help newcomers get started, affordable price points, and a worldwide community of users helping users and becoming friends in the process.

FEATURES

Were there any software features/tools that you were really impressed by?

The whole spreadsheet concept is very simple to understand and to maintain for people that aren't very technical. AppSheet has made so many improvements since June. I was communicating to the AppSheet team the other day that I thought I had been using AppSheet longer than I have been using it because they have put so many upgrades in the last few months. I've only been using it for about 6 months and the upgrades are constant. I love the new “show if”, “valid if” feature. They just added the dependent drop downs recently. Those features are great. They are adding a lot more too and it’s just more and more robust. They started out with making sure that they had the basics and now they are adding a lot more things that you can do. I don’t know if I can tell you all the features I like.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software that you feel could be added or improved upon?

The one feature that I want and I believe it’s in the plans for the next few months, is “in line” edit. That’s the feature that I am really looking forward to.

Have you had to interact with the platform’s support team or reference their support resources?

The AppSheet team is very supportive. They’re very responsive and they really want to help everyone get the most they can out of AppSheet. There are over 1500 members in the online community. That’s another one of the nice things about AppSheet, it feels like you are friends with people all over the world. We’re all helping each other - Russia, Brazil, California, Florida and even Turkey. We all work together on helping each other be more productive with AppSheet. AppSheet has a great Zendesk user guide and sample apps. So in addition to their awesome support team, users can look to these resources for information. I regularly monitor the Google+ AppSheet User Community and all forum questions are answered, and the AppSheet Team makes sure that users understand the answers. It is obvious that the AppSheet team really values its users. This fact is also evident in that AppSheet is receptive to customer feature requests and includes them where possible in their development schedule.

OVERVIEW

To sum up: We have a few quick questions, and for each question we ask you to rate the software on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best.

What would you give the software for functionality of the features available?

Four and a half. I haven’t compared it to other app builders.

What would you give the software for ease of use or ease of implementation into your business?

Three and a half. For me it’s fine but for other people it's not as easy. It’s just because you have to know how to format your formulas. Your formulas have to be just right for it to work. Someone who is not technical may not use the features as robustly, they’ll have to look at the user guide.

For support, as in responsiveness of the team or helpfulness of the resources available?

Five.

Overall, satisfaction with the platform?

Five. I don't think any software or anything in this world is perfect. What I would say is that AppSheet has the best balance of great software and functionality. You can quickly turn it around and the price point is affordable and they have a very great support team and an active community.

How likely are you to recommend the software to a colleague or similar business?

Five. I recommended them already. I tell everybody. If you haven’t tried AppSheet yet, you really should. It’s awesome!

This user highly recommends AppSheet for its overall ease of use, but looks forward to improvements in the platform to support Windows-based devices.

BACKGROUND

Can you provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

I don't have a company of my own, but I do work for different companies and organizations and make them apps with AppSheet.

OPPORTUNITY/CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge your company was facing that initiated the need for this platform?

I am not a developer by trade, but wanted a solution for customers who were interested in mobile applications.

SOLUTION

How does your company implement this platform or software?

Most recently, I have made five apps for a volleyball association. It was a tournament app where all the teams could see when they're playing and where they were playing. In addition, users were able to see on a map where the volleyball courts were located.

Was your company considering other platforms? Why this platform?

I have studied a little bit on how to create apps on the Android platform, but I'm not a professional.

On an annual or monthly basis, how much does your company spend to utilize the platform?

AppSheet doesn't cost me anything because my customers pay for it. I create the app, and I move the app to my customer, and they take care of the costs. The volleyball association paid about $50 a month.

FEATURES

Were there any software features or tools that really impressed you?

I would say that AppSheet is very good overall. I have researched many different ways of helping my customers, AppSheet is great because you don't have to be a professional to develop an app. I think the best part of the idea is that they keep it simple.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software upon which you feel could be added or improved?

We have one problem with AppSheet. In Finland, we have a large amount of Nokia users. Nokia uses the Windows platform. You can't currently use AppSheet if you have a Windows phone. In Finland, there is somewhere near 32 percent of people who have Windows-based phones.

Have you had to interact with the platform's support team or reference their support resources?

We have discussed the Microsoft problem with AppSheet, and they know the situation.

OVERVIEW

This AppSheet user is working to monetize their knowledge of the AppSheet platform for client's of their own. This user highly recommends AppSheet as a do-it-yourself app builder. This user highlights AppSheet's simplicity and quickly growing feature set.

BACKGROUND

Can you please provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

I’m working to build a business around AppSheet users. AppSheet is a do-it-yourself app development software. I currently have a portfolio of 10 to 15 apps. I personally use AppSheet for managing a lot of my financial holdings. I’m hoping that as my business grows, I will continue to use AppSheet to manage and run my business as well to do invoicing and relationship management.

CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge your company was facing that initiated the need for this platform?

A lot of times people don’t have the right background to build an app or effectively use AppSheet, in terms of user experience design, app design, or the intricacies of using the app in the field. Sometimes they need consultants or developers to help them build a better app.

SOLUTION

How does your company implement this platform or software?

My idea was to build a consulting business around AppSheet and I’ve been doing that for about six months. Initially, it was pretty slow because you need to have a large number of AppSheet customers that are building apps and facing issues. It’s picking up gradually. I have very few customers but I think that it’s a growing business.

Was your company considering other platforms? Why this platform?

I came across a few other app builders. The main one I was considering was called AppGyver. The reason I chose AppSheet was because of its simplicity and its ability to be changed quickly. You can redefine how your app looks or how your tables are structured, how your columns are accessed and how you attach photos. Using very simple options, you can automate a lot of things including barcode scanning. Another reason I chose AppSheet is because of its comprehensive capabilities without having to do a lot of coding and without having to know anything about how to launch an app. AppSheet does a lot of user testing on their end on both the iOS and Android platforms. A lot of the typical development steps are cut out of the process.

On an annual or monthly basis, how much does your company spend to utilize the platform?

It’s very minimal right now. If you use premium features like the workflow it can be more expensive.

The cost per app is $10 a month. Up to 100 users at $10 a month is really cost effective.

FEATURES

Were there any software features/tools that you were really impressed by? I would say it is AppSheet’s filtering option where you can say “don’t show me all the data just this particular subset of data.” They make it really easy to specify the subset and how it’s calculated. Being able to base the display within the app on a particular column or a particular value in a column is helpful. I think the feature set it definitely getting more complex. It used to be very simple.

Are there any areas of the software that you feel could be added or improved upon?

Push notifications would be number one on my list. If you have a team of people that are using the same app and they are using it to run their business, when somebody makes a change it is very important that other team members know something is going on. I’m sure they’re going to work on adding them.

Have you had to interact with the platform’s support team or reference their support resources?

I’m constantly on the AppSheet community forums. Many times, if their development team doesn’t answer a question, the other users are knowledgeable enough and can explain how they have tweaked AppSheet to their particular scenario. There’s always somebody to help out on your issue. The community is growing too. I reach out to their support once a week, whether it’s on how to do something or a capability that I would like to see added.

One suggestion for improvement is with documentation, it’s still a bit lacking. I believe they only have one or two people doing documentation whereas there are four or five people improving the platform and coding. That’s an issue for them right now, but I think they’re going to address it as they add more people. The community is engaged on a daily basis; I would say there are 10 to 15 core members. We are constantly chatting on the forums.

OVERVIEW

To sum up: We have a few quick questions, and for each question we ask you to rate the software on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best.

What would you give the software for functionality of the features available?

Four. If you have a spreadsheet, you can do a lot of things with AppSheet. AppSheet easily integrates with Google and the scripting capabilities give you a lot of power.

What would you give the software for ease of use or ease of implementation into your business?

Five.

For support, as in responsiveness of the team or helpfulness of the resources available?

Four and a half.

Overall, satisfaction with the platform?

Four and a half.

How likely are you to recommend the software to a colleague or similar business?

Five. I would recommend them wholeheartedly to anyone.

This user highly recommends AppSheet for their intuitive display and concurrent edit functionality, allowing multiple users to update information simultaneously.

BACKGROUND

Can you provide a brief description of your company and the role that you play there?

My company surveys residential sites for serviceability for cable service. If they don't have service, we've got to design the plant that's going to service them. I'm the owner.

OPPORTUNITY/CHALLENGE

What was the business challenge your company was facing that initiated the need for this platform?

In the process of surveying, we end up with a pile of addresses that all have a one- to two-day due date. I've got to track all of these addresses, map them out, and find out what's the most efficient way to go through them, manage them, and schedule a bill for them later. I was using a Google spreadsheet to keep it all in line, and I was just hosting that spreadsheet on a web page. The guy I was sending them to isn't the most technologically inclined so it was clunky, and it was ugly. I was looking for something better with a more intuitive display. We needed a more efficient way to execute on the process and store all of the data.

SOLUTION

How does your company implement this platform or software?

We use AppSheet to manage the list of addresses. The results of these surveys typically include thousands of addresses. I have to send all of the addresses to our team back in the office.

Was your company considering other platforms? Why this platform?

I had already been using a Google spreadsheet to track the addresses so AppSheet was a good fit.

FEATURES

Were there any software features or tools that impressed you?

I really like AppSheet's concurrent edits. That's the number one thing. It is great that someone can be entering new jobs while I'm submitting old ones. All a user has to do is refresh or sync the page.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software upon which you feel could be added or improved?

I'd like to see on-demand script triggering from Google Apps Scripts.

Have you had to interact with the platform's support team or reference their support resources?

I've worked with them quite a bit. They've been easy and very pleasant.

OVERVIEW

We have a few quick questions and, for each question, we ask you to rate the software on a scale of one to five, with five being the best. What would you give the software for functionality of the features available?

Four and a half. AppSheet has most things that people want. If they don't have it, they'll work to put it in there in a week or two.

What would you give the software for ease of use or ease of implementation into your business?

Four. I find it easier than a lot of people, but many don't want to read the manual.

For support, as in responsiveness of the team or helpfulness of the resources available?

Five.

How likely are you to recommend the software to a colleague or similar business?

Five. Already have.

Overall, satisfaction with the platform?

Four and a half.

This user highly recommends Appsheet for cases that involve large Google Forms and the necessity of a reliable platform to manage them.

Experience

I was working with a small business that did not have thousands of dollars to spend on application development, but required a Google form that they could use offline. The form they had was OK, but slow to the point that the Internet would drop in and out. We had to look at ways to make it more reliable. AppSheet gave us the offline option as well as few extra nice to have items.

Pros

We love the offline option. With what we have set up with AppSheet, it makes the form much more responsive.

Cons

We are still early in our move to the form, so no negatives have occurred.

The user highly recommends Appsheet for the ability to update spreadsheets on the go and their continuous improvement to the platform.

Experience

I was randomly looking for a way to turn a Google form into an application to make it easier for my girlfriend to track the horses she has been training, and what their owners owe her. A quick Google search resulted in my trying AppSheet, and it worked beautifully.

Their functionality has made the app go from a simple hour-and-dollar tracking app to a customer relationship management tool, full ledger, quote generator, and a couple of other random ideas that I have thrown in.

The system is so easy that I am actually using it to streamline many of the things that I do at home. I am about to break ground on a portfolio-tracking app. I have a shopping /to-do list that I share with my girlfriend, and I am about to start using it for house hunting. Maybe I am a little too excited about the functionality that a half hour on AppSheet gives you.

Pros

As someone who utilizes spreadsheets often, AppSheet has made it even easier for me to update them from afar. The AppSheet team interacts with the users via their forums on a daily basis and fixes bugs or adds functionality within a matter of hours – sometimes days – but nothing I have wanted has taken longer than waiting for their next system update.

Cons

I always wish that I could do more with the tools that I have, so my only negatives are the restrictions that I have yet to figure out ways around, such as finding a formula that will perform the task at hand.
