Introduce your business and what you do there.

We are an AHL [American Hockey League] team and we are the affiliate to the Detroit Red Wings. We’re based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and we play out of the Van Andel Arena. This will be our 21st season.

I am the Digital Marketing Manager. I handle all of the social media and email marketing, and I also manage our app.


What challenge were you trying to address with MobileRoadie?

We were looking to develop a high caliber app that we could customize to create a better experience for our fans.


What was the scope of their involvement?

We had an app prior to our engagement with MobileRoadie, but it was generic. We wanted a newer version that would reach our fans with different offers, whether they be tickets, contests, or breaking news. This will be our third season working with MobileRoadie.

How did you come to work with MobileRoadie?

We started investigating and we decided they were the right fit for us.

How much have you invested with MobileRoadie?

Based on our initial agreement with them, MobileRoadie allowed us to lump the cost of the custom design and the annual maintenance fee into one payment. We paid $10,000 overall. Since then, a couple of teams in the AHL have actually signed on with them. Now we pay $6,400 annually due to a discount they offer to AHL teams that don’t have an NHL [National Hockey League] budget.


Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

After two full seasons, we’re really happy to see that we are close to having 21,000 downloads of the app. Though we extend our reach beyond Grand Rapids, we have a really great home base of fans that like to follow the team, which the app really helps with while we are away. The app gives us the ability to provide its users with easy information about an away game or a home game that they cannot attend. We send out push notifications during the games which has really helped our fans become more connected. We’ve gotten a lot of great feedback and have been able to monetize our success through corporate partnerships and ticket revenue.


What did you find most impressive about MobileRoadie?

We like the fact that MobileRoadie works with a lot of groups in the entertainment industry. They gave us an app that has a really easy system to update and use. Using its filter and sorting capability, we’ve been able to customize the app based on fan feedback. A lot of the features of the app are really great even if it might not have every single section like an NHL app would have. Overall, MobileRoadie helped us build an app that is used a lot more than I anticipated.

Are there any areas MobileRoadie could improve?

MobileRoadie has recently merged with another IT company, so they’ve gone through a lot of updates. Still, if we have any issues, I think we get a pretty good response from them. We are adding a newer technology system to our arena, which is something we’re working on together because I don’t think they’ve had a lot of experience in that area. Overall, MobileRoadie is constantly working to improve and update as conditions change.

We’re happy.
The app provides a lot of value for what it’s worth. MobileRoadie also helps provide a lot of support in terms of pointing me in the right direction when I want to know how to do something on the app.
The CMS [content management system] is really easy to use, especially for someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience with that software.
Usually, we’re able to nail down whatever issue we have. If you do have questions, MobileRoadie is really responsive, which is something that has gotten better in their merger.
I’ve referred them already. A lot of people ask me about MobileRoadie, and the teams that have worked with them have had good results so far.
