I've been an entrepreneur for nearly 10 years.  About four years ago, I shifted gears and started a marketing company, offering other business clients search engine optimization services and the mobile apps to help them differentiate themselves from their competition. We have since focused on the heating and air conditioning industry niche, building mobile apps for repair contractors all around the country.

What business challenge were you trying to address with Bizness Apps?

We have used Bizness Apps for various niches, from restaurants to hair salons. We have started to focus on the heating-and-air contracting world, which makes up the majority of our current customers.

What is the ideal business use for Bizness Apps? What sort of project might not be a good fit?

With any home service provider, the challenge is not only getting leads but hanging on to them after the sale. By default, we built in rewards programs and physical coupons, and use the review builder from Bizness Apps’ marketplace in order to help dealers get Google Reviews from customers. Reviews are somewhat of a difficult thing to obtain from customers. There are different software packages which can help the process, but, at the end of the day, the customer needs to be authenticated with a login. People usually delete emails asking for reviews, so, presenting the customer with a tool at their home when they’re at their happiest, right after the contractor has finished being the hero, is hugely beneficial.

The apps are downloaded and used both by customers and the service providers. It’s important for a technician to have the app on their phone so that they can demonstrate its functionality, but we also coach them on different processes for getting customers to install the apps as well. Not everyone will, but this is the nature of mobile apps. Of those that do, they appreciate the ability to get value from coupons, discounts and so on.

The focus is to get the customer to install the app on their own device, since it enables the contractor to stay connected to them through push notifications and other things throughout the year, versus just being stuck wondering if the customer will ever call back for future service.

How did you come to choose Bizness Apps?

I’ve been using Bizness Apps since the beginning of the service. I was introduced to them by a friend around four years ago. I also investigated the prospect of mobile apps in general and decided if I wanted to make this a part of my company. I knew that there were many different tools on the market, but I didn’t want to get bogged down with 15 different choices, so I just went with Bizness Apps. They’ve been great.

What cost factors should be considered when using Bizness Apps?

Cost is a factor no matter what we’re choosing. It depends on the model of the business, but I’ve found Bizness Apps to be very economical. They provide a ton of value for what we have to pay every month, and there are different plans available for different volumes. As we grew as a company and added more apps, coming to around 96 in the marketplace at this time, our subscription changed accordingly. We have quite a big profit margin with the customer base, so I’m very happy.

My understanding is that there are different levels for resellers. I was part of Bizness Apps’ entry plan, out of which I received a set number of apps. As I installed more, I graduated to a bigger program, which made the cost-per-app even lower.

Paying one year in advance also provides a couple of months free, bringing the app cost down to around $5 or $6 per month. I haven’t done this, but there are still different programs.

Results

Could you share any statistics or metrics from your use of Bizness Apps?

Looking at our analytics across the company, I would have to measure each and every account. I don’t have data for the entire app network, but I can say that we’ve had huge success on an individual basis.

For one client, we reached a couple thousand users in the first three months. We grew that over the course of a couple of years until, at its peak, the app was being used by around 8,000 users.

We built an app for a mall in Denver and attracted a lot of users quickly through social media. We reached around 2,500 without even paying attention. The app let people share pictures and messages, as well as receive deals with multiple places. From a logistics standpoint, it wasn’t near our market, so we shut it down.

On the heating-and-air side, I don’t have any numbers, but the apps have been pretty successful.

Have you had interactions with any of their support team or support resources?

Their support is awesome beyond description. Bizness Apps’ team responds within minutes, and I can call them, whereas I could only email them initially. I’ve never had a problem in this area.

From the beginning, Bizness Apps has been extremely supportive, providing all the needed training about how to use the software, how to sell apps in the marketplace, as well as providing marketing materials that I could print and use on sales calls.  When we build the apps, we find that our customers like the scheduling forms, digital coupons, rewards programs, and the ability to get reviews from their customers on-site.  Adding apps to our offerings has not only helped us get a foot in the door, but it has increased our revenue substantially.

Pros

The best parts of the Bizness Apps offering are the ease of use and the available training and support. I would recommend users utilize all the tools and support that Bizness Apps provides. The solution is really built to be turn-key and can help you start a real mobile apps business tomorrow. 

Cons

Is there anything Bizness Apps could have improved or done differently?

Sometimes, they are slow to respond to suggestions in future updates. I get feedback all the time about the app’s ability to track sharing. Rewarding customers for referring a business in the HVAC space, for example, would be beneficial. I know it’s more of a limitation of the two app stores, simply because users don’t provide contact information upon installation. They do have accounts on the Google and Apple platforms, but the identity information is protected, so there are limitations in a dealer’s ability to have access to a user’s information. It has been well-received as a development suggestion, but it may not be achievable.

Tying in texting would be another addition, since that’s a powerful channel. We want to keep users inside the application, and not give them a reason to exit, but we can’t dispute the power of texting. We put in a scheduling form which customers can fill when they need non-emergency services. That is sent to the company in the form of an email, but also texting the owner would be great.

Overall, I haven’t heard a lot of feedback from upset customers. I’ve been more than able to satisfy my customer base with the number of features provided by Bizness Apps.

I like that the builder is easy to use and friendly. The sharing aspect is useful. It’s extremely easy to set up and design your own apps with just a little bit of trial and error.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software that you feel could be added or improved upon?

I think that if it had more integration features, especially for pulling the app analytics, it would be much more useful. We have to manually get the app analytics for our clients rather than populating them into our own dashboard.

I think the support staff does a very good job. A few years ago, they were all over the place a bit, but they’ve definitely stepped up their game and we usually get what we need.

Overall Score I think it gets the job done. Sometimes, it gets a little confusing with the lack of analytics, or when they forget to let you know when and why you should update your apps if something in their code changes.

Customer profiling is equally or more important than the technology, performing needs analysis within a business, in order to find out how the app can actually help market the business. Not all businesses need an app, so it's very important to discern which industry is a good fit. We provide a directory of 200 hotels in the region, and Bizness Apps is a very good platform for this. We also sell the template to solo businesses, which is a different market, requiring its own needs and customer analysis.

How did you come to choose Bizness Apps?

Although I came onboard with the company a bit later, I was in charge of building our 2 main apps. Bizness Apps is the only platform we've used. It provides a good range of tools, although we've argued that there should be some more intuitive functionalities integrated into Bizness Apps.

What cost factors should be considered when using Bizness Apps?

Our industry app comes with a monthly subscription for companies which want to be featured in it. We have a tiered price structure based on the amount of exposure a client requires. We have a setup cost of about $1,100 [1,500 AUD] for instance deployments of Bizness Apps, as well as a hosting fee of $45 [60 AUD] per month.

Could you share any statistics or metrics from your use of Bizness Apps?

We've seen quite a bit of success with launching Bizness Apps for around 30 clients, but I can't provide quantifiable metrics.

What did you find most impressive about Bizness Apps?

I love the loyalty system offered by Bizness Apps; it brings a whole new dimension for companies, and it is a great incentive for them to operate on a one-on-one basis with customers. Architecturally speaking, there is a massive amount of information that can be placed into the app template. We have integrated 220 venues across the Newcastle region, each one with a link to its Facebook page and weekly updates.

Are there any areas Bizness Apps could improve?

Some of the bugs could be ironed out. We also wanted to have a front page which could be updated weekly, without a lot of data entry involved.

I know that Bizness Apps tried to tailor its solution to a broad range of customers. They're doing this well, but we'd like to see a customization service, even if it meant paying extra. There could also be some plug-ins for customizing certain functionalities, meeting the specific needs of our customers, and making the platform more intuitive. Resellers could benefit from this kind of integration.

I like to find ways for the app to work for consumers, rather than for the company. Again, I have to mention push notifications. I also like the upgrades to our merchandising tab, especially for food ordering. Offline caching is amazing. Specifically, in the case of a pool vendor we work with, if the Internet access goes down, they still have access to PDFs.

Looking back, are there any areas of the software that you feel could be added or improved upon?  

I would like to see the merchandise tab have the same ability as the food ordering one, allowing for recurring orders to be saved.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Bizness Apps has helped create a residual income for our company. Usually, a website build comes with a flat fee followed by a small monthly hosting fee. We have been able to charge between $1,500 and $2,500 per app designs and customization. Our average monthly fee ranges from $200 to $350 per app, so this has put a lot of money into our bottom line.

What did you find most impressive about Bizness Apps?

The ordering system for restaurants has opened the door for us to market with more clients of this type. Bizness Apps has significantly updated it, bringing in more functionalities for small restaurants which don't have expensive POS systems but still want to get into the online and mobile ordering field.

Are there any areas Bizness Apps could improve?

Bringing video in and offering the ability to record through the app, beyond YouTube and Video, would be a good addition. We've brought a third party to do this, which goes back to what's great about Bizness Apps: we can integrate other services into it. It's a sort of Swiss army knife of the digital age.

Have you had interactions with any of their support team or support resources?

Support has actually gotten better. I never wait more than 2 hours. If I email, even during weekends, I always receive a response within 2 hours, in the worst-case scenario.

We don't have the skill sets for creating an application of the same complexity as Bizness Apps. We can offer the platform to different kinds of businesses, whether we're talking about restaurants, beauty salons, or gyms. Being able to provide software that is easy to use by both clients and our own company gives us a nice advantage.

What is the ideal business use for Bizness Apps? What sort of project might not be a good fit?

An agency that already has graphic design capabilities and an existing customer base will have an easy time using Bizness Apps. If they have to start from scratch, Bizness Apps is also an amazing software to use. It doesn't require any programming skills whatsoever. Clients need to be familiar with the marketing process, though. If they don't know how to sell the product, it can lead to problems. 

Restaurant businesses and beauty salons can benefit from using Bizness Apps as well as any other business that offers some kind of customer loyalty program. I find this to be one of the main features in the platform. There are many kinds of functionalities within Bizness Apps that can be adopted by businesses like digital QR coupons. Many businesses today are still using stamps on paper, so it can be a beneficial change for them.

On the contrary, if the user is targeting other businesses, as with the construction industry, I find that there is a lack of features within Bizness Apps. Many of my clients have asked me about measurements functionalities, for example, but I cannot provide this yet. I know that Bizness Apps is constantly working toward upgrading and creating features that can target new sectors.

How did you come to choose Bizness Apps?

We went through exhaustive research, trying to skip the middleman. I believe that we made the right choice. Bizness Apps is the most important provider of this kind, and they're constantly improving their product. The customer support is also outstanding, which is very important. This allows us to concentrate on the sales process.

What cost factors should be considered when using Bizness Apps?

The software itself is very cost-effective, compared to creating an app from scratch. The timeframe, skill sets, and costs cannot compare. The selling part does come with additional overhead. When offering this service to a customer, businesses also have to put in the necessary time for following up.

Can you share any success, metrics, or overall results of your implementation of this platform?

Many of my customers had been looking to obtain their own apps. Due to the costs involved in this, small and medium-sized businesses couldn't go through with the initiative. Bizness Apps allows us to target those small customers that are highly eligible for the service. They have existing and recurring clients, which we can help retain through different kinds of loyalty programs, booking systems, electronic gift cards, merchant services, and so on.

What distinguishes Bizness Apps from other platforms?

I see Bizness Apps as being more than just a general app. It's a marketing platform that allows customers to integrate and synchronize their Facebook and other third-party social media accounts. This is a huge advantage, compared to other platforms. Bizness Apps also offers the opportunity for the end-users themselves to connect through their Facebook, thus reaching other potential customers.

Is there anything Bizness Apps could have improved or done differently?

The booking system needs to be improved, compared to similar offerings from competitors. I know that Bizness Apps is working on this.

Have you had interactions with any of their support team or support resources?

Their support is amazing. Bizness Apps has set a benchmark, and they're always improving. The team has a European staff and supports worldwide customers. I've adopted the same philosophy for my own customers.

What challenge were you trying to address with Bizness Apps?

After looking into the Bizness Apps platform, we decided to give it a try in order to add mobile apps to our offering.

We've been a Bizness Apps reseller since 2013. Over the course of these 3 years, they've worked hard on improving the platform and making resellers more successful. Many companies have white-label programs, but they don't care one way or the other about their clients. Bizness Apps' CEO [chief executive officer] has taken a very active role in updating the platform and making sure that we're getting training and various materials which can help us with our own clients.

What is the ideal business use for Bizness Apps? What sort of project might not be a good fit?

Bizness Apps is ideal for the average small business owner. If not enough effort is put into building an app, the result will be less than great. It's also necessary to have developer accounts with Google and Apple and upload the apps on their own. Most people won't know how to do this, and won't have the time to do it. In the end, they spend more money and time doing it themselves, than they would have if they paid someone to do it correctly.

There are other app-building companies which offer free apps initially, but after getting to a certain level, they demand payment for any kind of actual functionality. I've heard this from a couple of clients who learned the hard way. Business owners should do what they do best, and allow people like ourselves to handle apps on their behalf.

How did you come to choose Bizness Apps?

I have looked at other platforms but didn't find them to be as easy to learn and use as Bizness Apps. Their CEO won the Entrepreneurial Contest of CSU, Chico, which happens to be the college that my son attends. This built a bit of trust with me, showing that Bizness Apps is making an effort to move up the ranks. Other companies also gave me the impression that I would be nickel-and-dimed along the way. Bizness Apps was always transparent with cost, and also provided an excellent level of support. We receive email responses even on weekends, so I know that I have Bizness Apps' support if any client experiences an issue.

What cost factors should be considered when using Bizness Apps?

I charge clients a fixed price for the entire setup and design, including the app's graphics and the deployment to the app stores. We charge a monthly service for maintaining the app.

We have 20-30 clients using Bizness Apps, spending between $50 and $250 per month, on average.

Bizness Apps has unlimited push notifications, which is great for restaurants. We can charge a flat monthly fee, compared to companies like GrubHub, which charge 10-15% of tickets' values. They can create exposure, but those fees amount to a lot of money after a while.

I pay Bizness Apps a monthly fee for app credits. This isn't something that we pass on to clients, given that we make our money through setup and maintenance services.

Results

Could you share any statistics or metrics from your use of Bizness Apps?

We have a DJ client who had success with his app. His audience can listen to his music on their phones, which used to be a big issue. We can setup the app geographically, allowing him to get more downloads from his own region, in the Czech Republic.

We have another client who promotes himself as the new Hugh Hefner. He posts videos and push notifications in order to interact with his audience. It's something he's really enjoyed.

We are also working with a couple of barbers who can schedule appointments through the app. The little things available within Bizness Apps enable giving customers more flexibility and convenience.

What did you find most impressive about Bizness Apps?

The in-app food ordering is very good, rivaling Eat24 and GrubHub. I personally like to order food through the phone, pay for it, and simply pick it up. Basic features like geofencing are also good. It helps show businesses how to effectively draw people in.

A client going to a sports bar will stop ordering at some point, after watching the game and hanging out with their friends. We can use Bizness Apps to serve push notifications on certain immediate offers at that bar. This helps businesses be truly interactive with customers in their establishment.

Are there any areas Bizness Apps could improve?

The reservation system is good, but it could use some more improvement. We are also hoping to update the loyalty program, giving it some more flexibility. It's rare for me to experience any customer service issues with Bizness Apps, and the minuses are minimal overall. Bizness Apps listens to customer feedback and has implemented reseller suggestions. There is even a Facebook page for this purpose, notifying us about upcoming improvements and posting training material.

Have you had interactions with any of their support team or support resources?

Bizness Apps' team is available to respond over the weekend and during holidays. There is also a live chat feature. I find that Bizness Apps has done everything possible in order to ensure that we can get in touch with them and find support and answers.
