Drupal Development Company FAQs
Looking for a Drupal development company but not sure where to start? We've put together answers to the most common questions businesses ask when searching for a trusted partner. This FAQ covers what you need to know before hiring a Drupal development company, from pricing and services to results and red flags.
Clutch highlights companies that deliver robust, enterprise-grade solutions using Drupal based on a proprietary methodology. The top Drupal development companies for 2026 include:
A Drupal developer is a specialized web developer who builds, customizes, and maintains websites using the Drupal content management system. They are responsible for both front-end and back-end development, which includes designing user interfaces, creating custom themes, and writing PHP code to develop new functionalities or modify existing ones. Their work often involves configuring and extending Drupal modules to meet specific business needs, as well as creating custom modules when necessary.
Beyond development, Drupal developers manage database structures, ensure cross-browser compatibility, and optimize site performance for speed and scalability. They also handle site security by applying patches, conducting audits, and implementing best practices to protect against vulnerabilities. When businesses need to upgrade from older versions of Drupal or migrate from another CMS, Drupal developers lead the migration process, ensuring content, functionality, and SEO settings are preserved.
Drupal developers offer a wide range of services centered around building, customizing, and maintaining websites using the Drupal content management system. Their services typically include:
- Custom Website Development
- Module Development and Customization
- Theme Design and Integration
- Site Migration and Upgrades
- Performance Optimization
- Security and Maintenance
- Third-Party Integration
- Consulting and Support
These services help businesses build robust, secure, and flexible digital platforms using one of the most powerful open-source CMS options available.
Choosing the right Drupal developer starts with identifying the scope of your project—whether you need a simple website, a complex web application, or ongoing maintenance and support. Look for developers who have proven experience with Drupal, ideally with a portfolio that includes similar types of projects. Ask about the versions they’ve worked with, especially if you’re using or migrating to the latest Drupal release.
Technical skills are essential, but effective communication is equally important. A good Drupal developer should be able to explain technical concepts clearly, offer strategic input, and collaborate effectively with your team. Make sure they understand your business goals and can translate them into functional and scalable digital solutions.
Ask for references, check client reviews on platforms like Clutch, and confirm their familiarity with security best practices, performance optimization, and third-party integrations. The right developer will not only have strong technical capabilities but also a proactive, solution-oriented mindset.
Before hiring a Drupal developer, watch for signs that may indicate a lack of expertise or a poor fit for your project. One major red flag is a limited or outdated experience. If a developer hasn’t worked with recent versions of Drupal or lacks a portfolio of relevant projects, they may struggle with modern site architecture or current best practices. Poor communication, slow response times, or missed deadlines during early interactions can suggest ongoing collaboration issues. Another warning sign is resistance to collaboration or feedback. Developers should be open to working with designers, content teams, and other stakeholders to meet shared goals.
Before hiring a Drupal developer, ask the following questions to evaluate their skills, experience, and fit for your project:
- What versions of Drupal have you worked with, and are you familiar with the latest versions?
- Can you show examples of Drupal projects you’ve completed?
- Do you specialize in front-end, back-end, or full-stack Drupal development?
- How do you approach custom module development and theming?
- What’s your experience with site performance, security, and SEO best practices in Drupal?
- How do you handle site maintenance and updates after launch?
- Have you worked on Drupal migrations or upgrades from older versions?
- What is your process for testing and quality assurance?
- How do you communicate during the project, and how often can I expect updates?
- Can you provide references or client reviews?
