Insomniac Design is a global creative and digital agency with a strong commitment to making a lasting impact on brands, people, and communities. We specialize in human-centered design — with projects and work that includes digital strategy, complex web and mobile builds, digital transformation, CRM integration, system integrations, API implementation, user experience, branding, visual design, and creative services. We are strategists, analysts, scientists, designers and developers with work that has spanned across continents and touched many industries.
Insomniac Design was selected to re- imagine and modernize a suite of web- based tools and products that enable the collection, analysis and dissemination of longitudinal health and genomic data, amongst other goals.
APHL engaged Insomniac Design to build the website and data repository for their NewSTEPS (Newborn Screening Technical assistance and Evaluation Program) initiative, to ensure that states can adequately evaluate, analyze, and benchmark the performance of their tests and the quality of their newborn screening programs.
APHL engaged Insomniac Design to build the website and data repository for their NewSTEPS initiative, to ensure that state health departments can adequately evaluate, analyze, and benchmark the performance of newborn screening tests and the quality of programs.
NewSTEPs is a national newborn screening resource center designed to provide data, technical assistance, and training to newborn screening programs and assist states with quality improvement initiatives.
We conceptualized a web platform to collect and provide data, offer technical and educational program resources, and assist states with quality improvement initiatives — all requiring harmonization of complex screening activities through innovative technology.
The NEWSteps platform offers newborn screening resources, news, trending-data visualizations, online toolkits, webinars, events, and more. A vast Data Repository acts a central source to contribute and analyze data around a number of newborn health screening factors — where state and local health departments can submit newborn screening data across a variety of specific health indicators.
We built tools and features like the Confirmed Cases Form to make it easy for public health professionals to record and document data, and track cases against trends and demographic information that can shed light on broader newborn health indicators.
The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) administers the national program to accredit governmental public health departments at the state, local, tribal, and territorial level. PHAB has compiled a unique dataset of peer-reviewed assessments of health department capacity.
We partnered to develop a web-based data visualization tool that enables health departments and the public to access this information as an aggregated visualization, conceptualized for easy and intuitive use. The product was launched in January 2020 and we continue to provide support and maintenance services.
The mission of the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) is to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and transforming the quality and performance of governmental public health agencies in the US and abroad.
Through a rigorous, peer-reviewed process, health departments are assessed on their conformity with consensus standards. This data portal allows the public health community to explore and visualize these aggregate data on health department capacity.
People can get a snapshot of health department capacity by specific measures or by theme, and can explore differences in health department characteristics. Accredited agencies can benchmark their capacity against others, and information about the public health outcomes that health departments are tracking is also available.
We designed the portal to offer tools that people and health departments can use to self-evaluate and understand performance, and offer comparisons on a variety of factors. Data visualizations and filters are available for people to gain immediate access to key characteristics of accredited health departments and their performance on the measures.
With an account login, accredited health departments can compare their assessments to the assessments of others. People are able to dive deeper info specific public health issues and understand how they are being prioritized at a local, regional and national level across a variety of assessment factors.
PHAB's Accreditation platform leads the way for state and local health departments to maximize performance — with improvements seen in quality, accountability, community health and equity.
UN Women engaged Insomniac Design to concept, design, and develop the world's first comprehensive gender-data portal. UN Women takes a lead role in monitoring the implementation of gender-related targets and indicators, to track progress on global commitments to gender equality and womens' empowerment — and the gender-data portal creates data access to inform global policy and advocacy.
Our job was to create a one-stop shop for gender-data and content, compiled and consolidated from vast and disparate data sets from around the world. We combined clean UX design with a back-end technical implementation that allowed for aggregated content, plus news and feature highlights.
We focused on how to visualize huge data sets around a specific set of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators. These benchmarks allow for a unique look into global gender-specific issues, especially around impacts on women. The platform allows researchers to access expansive data in new ways for study and research, and empowers the public to visualize gender-related variables in an easy and intuitive way.
We built a custom content dashboard that showcases an incredible volume of content in a simple layout with robust delivery. The data visualizations and accessibility enabled by the platform offer an unparalleled look into gender issues for researchers and general public alike.
We were inspired by this project knowing that our platform would be used to support women and people around the world. We believe the more we can support and benefit others with our work, the more we all win.
BBC Worldwide selected Insomniac Design as one of seven companies worldwide to provide digital and creative services. Insomniac Design worked with the BBC to launch mobile apps for their annual PROMS season. After the first release of the iOS and Android apps, the app was featured by the Apple App Store and social media channels, with a reach of over 11 million followers.
Every year, the Proms sell both a season brochure (Proms Guide) and physical programs that include extensive repertoire notes for each performance in the Royal Albert Hall.
The Guide contains full listings information, editorial articles and features, and supplementary information about ticket-booking and the concert experience.
We drew upon classic BBC style elements to bring together a visual pallet that worked perfectly for the project.
The District of Columbia Courts partnered with Insomniac Design to undertake a major overhaul of the Court’s digital strategy and presence. Insomniac Design worked with DC Courts’ divisions to develop state-of-the-art communications and technology strategy to serve it’s audiences that include internal stakeholders, attorneys, jurors and the general public.
Addressing Multiple Audiences & Needs
Our first challenge was to address multiple audiences with very different needs across a vast array of options and website content.
We dug deep to understand the unique needs of different audience groups, and implemented a human-centered design approach to create an easy-to-follow user flow for people using the website
Moving Analog to Digital
Implementing a user-centered design approach then required the digitization of a wealth of analog processes and paper forms, to create an easy and effective digital process and experience.
The new, digital-first experience gives people new capabilities and more convenient options to solve in minutes issues that may have previously taken hours or days based on an antiquated, analog system.
Active Warrants List
Finally, we implemented features like a new Active Warrant list to offer critical content in an easy way to the people who need it most. Easy access to high-priority content based on need resulted in an updated and seamless experience across the platform.
We created a visual style that was consistent with the DC Courts design themes and allowed us to build a modern, user-centered interface
Environmental Defense Fund saw an opportunity to connect unlikely allies — landowners, industry, and conservationists for a new kind of conservation program.
Insomniac Design partnered with Environmental Defense Fund to launch an online platform for the Central Valley Habitat Exchange, an innovative conservation program that takes advantage of emerging habitat markets and leverages the strong stewardship ethic of California farmers and ranchers.
The Central Valley Habitat Exchange creates opportunities to farmers and ranchers to conserve and steward critical habitat for at-risk wildlife. The site brings together everything people need to know about the program -- to highlight its impact, bring on new partners, and share success stories.
The exchange registry works by pairing investors seeking opportunities to fund conservation or mitigation projects with landowners who want to create or maintain habitat on their working lands.
Style Guide & Imagery
We implemented a detailed and specific style guide in creating the visual direction for the project.
