I am the marketing executive for an E-learning company. We provide online courses teaching 21st-century skills for teenagers. These include skills like critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and resilience, and our goal with them is to prepare students for university and the workplace.

What challenge were you trying to address with Pearl Lemon?

Our website needed a significant amount of work on its SEO. I am not an expert myself, so we needed someone to step in. The head of marketing had stepped down and we hired Pearl Lemon to help us with that.

We also used to be B2C focused, selling to individual students, but then we decided to make the shift to B2B selling to schools and institutions and we were looking for help with making that shift.

Pearl Lemon helped with keyword ranking, link building, and general SEO. They provided us with monthly reports on our keyword rankings and building on that, as well as helping us with our website health, including the metadata and things like that. In addition, they did a lot of background work to improve the speed of the website for us.

I worked with four people from Pearl Lemon. Deepak (Founder, Pearl Lemon) was our primary point of contact. He was very responsive and sorted things out when we needed them to. The rest of the team was really good and provided useful weekly reports.

I wasn’t involved in the process of finding Pearl Lemon, but I know that the person that hired them liked their style of work and the way in which they were always trying to innovate.

We worked with them from June–December 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

When it came to the link building activities, I believe they had a certain number of links they were supposed to provide and they definitely met that. Deepak sent us a summary report and we significantly improved in our keyword rankings.

They provided us with some Google Analytics reports on top traffic channels and the channels that worked best for us, and although I didn’t see a massive change in that, there was a rise particularly when it came to keyword ranking.

How did Pearl Lemon perform from a project management standpoint?

We had a casual relationship and it was really easy to talk to them. They were very good at responding, as we spoke primarily on WhatsApp and email. They had a lot of ideas for us and were good at meeting deadlines, so we received all the reports when we should have.

I would say that we occasionally felt a little bit ill-informed about the details of what was going on. They were sending a lot of information to us, and we aren’t experts in this sort of thing so it was a lot of information to take in. They definitely provided a lot of reports, which they said they would, but it was a little bit too much information.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I think if you like having a very relaxed relationship and you like working with different people who are experts in different fields, that is what Pearl Lemon is really good for. They are all remote, but they are experts in whatever they do. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

Sometimes we could have done with a little bit more of a walkthrough as to what was going on. If you have a lot of knowledge in the area then what they are doing is probably perfect. If you don’t know anything, however, it can be quite time consuming because there is so much information and at a certain point you have to just trust what they are doing. Generally, they were good but it would probably be more useful if you have more knowledge in the area.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Depending on how much management you like to give people, it might be good to set up a more regular call with them which we didn’t do. I personally would prefer a little more of a structured meeting schedule, so I would say to book meetings with them to make sure you understand what is going on.

Our website has moved to the first page of search results for competitive keywords. The strategic help they provided was invaluable. We’ve been able to maintain those positions instead of dropping off them like before.

They consistently kept us in the loop with what they were doing. Pearl Lemon is very transparent, working in Google Docs to ensure we had access to everything. They always offered explanations for their decisions.

Have a realistic goal in mind for what you want to achieve. I especially recommend that for smaller businesses with less structure.

In the last month alone, our impressions have grown significantly. Over the last four weeks, our click-through rates have increased as well, along with traffic and sales.

Their whole team gave us regular updates weekly and monthly through detailed reports. Throughout the engagement, we changed around our targets and goals. Pearl Lemon was responsive to those changes, implementing the solutions quickly.

As for communication, we use WhatsApp, keeping in touch with Deepak and his team every day. That area was on point.

First, they introduced the team and then they shared with us a plan and defined everything in detail through documents and videos to explain the process. Based on the set strategy, we improved the website with better contents and then we started to work on the blog. Pearl Lemon selected the best keywords for us and defined a content calendar.

The communication has always been good, Pearl Lemon team is both proactive and reactive, they use to reply promptly. We mainly communicate through emails, skype calls and chat, google drive documents, videos.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

First of all, the organisation. Both resources and projects are managed in a very good way, which is not that obvious considering that many resources work from remote and different countries. They are very accurate in their work and are attentive to the customer's needs and problems. Also, they understand the importance of communicating effectively and respond quickly to any question/issue.

There is always something that can be improved and the good thing of Pearl Lemon is that they ask for feedback and improve constantly where needed (from general to more specific issues). Some particular aspects of our project might need improvements but the way we work together doesn't need it.

We have seen an increase in keyword positions for keywords we worked on optimizing for. We have also seen progress month over month in terms of organic growth.

The workflow is very effective with Pearl Lemon. They respond to emails very quickly and we also have them on slack which is convenient. They are very easy to work with and quick to take directions. I also like that they leave videos and sound clips, which helps when it comes to answering questions that require longer responses

Their "can do" attitude. They are very easy to work with. They adapt to the workflow that is best for you, and there's never any pushback. They are willing to go above and beyond. Communication is also a breeze. You can expect a response from them within 24 hours. Sometimes they respond so quickly that I'm taken aback.

Areas for improvement or rather, a suggestion might include more forecasting or insight that speaks to our numbers and the growth of our numbers. I think it would be cool to know where we'll be 3-6 months from now. I understand that we can't predict organic growth, so this is a tough ask.

There was an immediate pick up of attendees, and we received comments back from some of them complimenting us on our approach. Most of these comments came from marketers who understand the difficulties in creating engagement. I was very impressed.

I didn't interfere with Pearl Lemon’s approach because I trusted their expertise in this space. I gave them a thorough brief that included our tone of voice, and they took this and built a fresh campaign, giving me the choice of two routes. The work was excellent.

Both Kas and my other point of contact were supportive throughout the initial week of the project. The prep work took us all about four days, and we kicked off on day five.

Kas and I became digital pen pals. He provided daily support and regularly gave me the context of what was happening. He told me about how he was affecting each change and what the results were. He also gave me clear instructions for what I needed to do. I felt very safe knowing that we were all doing the best that we could and that we were all hoping for our goals to be achieved.

I was really impressed with their expertise. They knew how to create the approach, taking into consideration each detail that pertained to the delivery of the campaign. Most importantly, they knew how to manage me and my expectations. I respect them because they were always up front and honest with me. They weren’t afraid to tell me no as often as I needed to hear it. Ultimately, I believe that they want to see me succeed as much as I do.
