I am the managing director of AlphaSeas, a specialist strategy and advisory firm focused on the maritime industry.

We looked to create an integrated distributed ledger system for marine assets and services powered by the Ethereum virtual machine. We needed outside assistance to manage the end-to-end development process for the frontend, backend CRM, and blockchain programming.

What were your goals for this project?

This project was to be the pioneer in applying distributed ledger technologies to solving problems in capital structures in the maritime marketplace. We wanted to develop a responsive frontend design that would attract new customers. We hoped to provide a blockchain-powered marketplace solution with an easy-to-use UX to educate new customers who were unfamiliar with blockchain technologies.

How did you select this vendor?

Zignuts was chosen from a group of four initial vendors we approached. They came highly recommended from a business acquaintance who had previously launched a successful project with their assistance. Zignuts was chosen over the others due to the speed of responses to our preliminary questions, a competitive quote, and a favorable recommendation.

Can you go into detail about the services they provided and the scope of the project?

Zignuts developed our frontend interface and backend CRM module and set up the blockchain architecture. They completed the backend programming for blockchain processes and integrated it with the frontend. A dynamic administrator module was formed to upload assets and services onto our marketplace. Finally, they conducted a social media campaign prior to our launch. The complexities of our project were managed with Go, Solidity, Truffle Framework, OpenZeppelin, Ethereum Blockchain, JavaScript, Node.js, Express.js, Passport.js, web3.js, PHP/Laravel, jQuery, and JQuery UI, HTML5, CSS3, and Bootstrap.

What was the team composition?

The project team had seven members—three from our side and four from Zignuts—throughout the process. Our board was responsible for coordinating the project and approving team members.

Can you share any information that demonstrates the impact that this project has had on your business?

We have successfully become the world’s first distributed ledger platform for maritime assets and services. We have achieved our goal for seed-round funding upon completion of the project. We have introduced the services module to various registries around the world to apply blockchain-powered solutions to their processes. And we have been recognized by one of the Big 4 accounting firms as having one of the most innovative projects in the Fintech space for 2018.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

We met all of our deadlines. Feedback loops worked seamlessly. Zignuts was readily available at all times. To communicate, we predominately used WhatsApp groups, Telegram groups, shared Google Drives, and conference calls. Language translations were never a barrier.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

We had direct access to the management, the developers, and the programmers. All of Zignuts’ resources were available to us. They sincerely took ownership of our project and worked toward its success. It hardly felt like a vendor-client relationship. Rather, it was a partnership where all interests were aligned.

Are there any areas where they can improve?

Their service delivery was fully satisfactory. I have no suggestions there. As Zignuts expands, though, they may need to consider adding resources to keep up service quality.

My goal was to develop the initial layout and functionalities for my website. Since I have very limited web development knowledge, I tasked them with converting the site design and functionality that I had envisioned into an actual website.

What were your goals for this project?

We needed to design an interface where users could login and register for free, browse recipes, and add their own to the site. We also needed to add multiple features, including a “favoriting” function and a Yummy.ph recipe import feature.

How did you select this vendor?

While browsing, I found three groups that could cater to my requests. Ravi (Representative, Zignut Technolab Pvt. Ltd.) stood out among them. He was very interested in the project and asked the right questions about my requirements. I chose Zignuts, and I don’t have any regrets.

They built a website with a cataloguing functionality, which allows the user to browse, schedule, plan, create, and import recipes from other websites.

As far as I am aware, Ravi managed all communication between me and their team. Their communication and delivery of the output went smoothly.

We were a small coupon marketing startup with a five-person team based in Berlin. I was the founder and CEO of the company.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Zignuts Technolab?

We were developing a coupon marketing software for hotels and restaurants which was mainly online-based. It would allow businesses to create coupons online, integrate them into their websites through JavaScript widgets, and have clients redeem them in-store.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We outsourced our development to Zignuts Technolab. The frontend was a widget, while the backend allowed users to manage timeframes for coupons. The system also had Facebook and Twitter integrations, allowing businesses to promote their services there. The backend was PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript.

The project was milestone-based and ran for 6–8 months. Zignuts Technolab assigned one full-time developer, while other resources joined in for different parts. The Facebook and Twitter integration involved a separate developer, and we also had a quality assurance tester assigned.

We had already built a design and had Photoshop mockups for all the pages in the platform. Strategy elements were also handled in-house. As with any project, we figured out that some parts needed to be changed or added, so Zignuts Technolab’s developers have had to make designs themselves.

How did you come to work with Zignuts Technolab?

I met one of Zignuts Technolab’s principals during a tech startup conference in Germany called IdeaLab! I talked to him about our project and went from there. We stayed in touch through telephone and Skype and had Zignuts Technolab build a milestone plan based on our requirements.

How much have you invested with Zignuts Technolab?

The cost of Zignuts Technolab’s work was around $50,000. The scope increased from our original agreement, but only because we added more functionalities. The payments were made based on milestones, which was nice from our perspective because we didn't put in all our money at once and hoped for the best.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Zignuts Technolab three or four years ago. The project lasted for about eight months.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

There were some bugs in the software, but we had a good process of documenting them through screenshots and having Zignuts Technolab work on them. We had a 3-month bug fixing phase which was part of the original scope. We recorded around 150 bugs in our ticketing system.

Our hotel and restaurant clients liked the software overall. The usability was mainly set on our side, so Zignuts Technology was not involved in creating flows. The platform ran fast and had no lagging.

How did Zignuts Technolab perform from a project management standpoint?

In the beginning, we moved within timelines, but the charts and graphs took a bit longer. In total, we came to be two months behind, but we were already expecting that. Besides our team, Zignuts Technolab also assigned a quality assurance manager who checked in from time to time to see if we were satisfied. He didn't have such a large involvement, but it was nice to see that someone besides us was looking at the quality.

What did you find most impressive about Zignuts Technolab?

Zignuts Technolab had a bigger team in the background, so whenever our resources ran into an area for which they didn't have much expertise, they could rely on other people in their company. We were only building a web app, but Zignuts Technolab did have Android and iOS resources. If we wanted to extend the product on mobile, we could have done it using Zignuts Technolab. Things went unexpectedly smoothly on the development end, compared to the nightmare stories I'd heard about outsourcing to India.

Are there any areas Zignuts Technolab could improve?

We built some diagrams showing how many coupons were being redeemed and shared. That part took a bit longer to build, probably because we didn't specify it precisely enough. Zignuts Technolab had less of an understanding in terms of design here, so we had to clearly state what we wanted things to look like.

On-time delivery of milestones:

Even though we're still in the pre-launch development phase, I'm very happy with Zignuts Technolab's commitment to meeting deadlines. They've consistently delivered each milestone on time, from the initial design concepts to the ongoing development sprints. This gives me confidence that we're on track for a successful launch.

Effective communication and collaboration:

Zignuts has established excellent communication channels from the start. Actually, that's an understatement. Having worked with multiple agencies (and working for one myself), I can say that they have the best transparent, frequent communication I've ever encountered! They're always quick to respond to my questions and feedback, and we have regular meetings to discuss progress and plan next steps. We use Slack, Jira, Google Meet, Docs, etc., to collaborate effectively, which keeps everyone on the same page and ensures transparency throughout the development process.

Proactive problem-solving:

One of the things I appreciate most about Zignuts is their proactive approach to problem-solving. For example, they anticipated a potential performance bottleneck with our initial database design and proactively suggested a more efficient approach while considering the need to grow and evolve the product roadmap. Their ability to anticipate challenges and propose solutions has been essential in keeping the project moving smoothly, and I can't thank them enough for the support and guidance they have provided me every step along the way! Adaptability and flexibility: I was initially hesitant to expand the project scope, but Zignuts was incredibly flexible and willing to take on the full website development. They really stepped up and proved they could handle everything, which was a huge relief for me. (Shout out to Ishan and Nirav!)

Proactive problem-solving: Their problem-solving skills are great. I remember when I missed some steps in creating and communicating a needed workflow, but I had nothing to fear as Visha had already taken the initiative to correct it before going into development. Viasha was already on top of it, saving me a lot of potential headaches down the road.

Strong communication and collaboration: One of the team's greatest strengths is their communication. Communication has been nothing short of amazing –and seamless throughout the project. We have frequent, regular meetings, and they're always available to answer my questions or jump on a quick Meet to discuss. Plus, they use Slack to keep everything organized and transparent, which I really appreciate.

Zignuts Technolab has done a great job in employee training and management. Team members are disciplined to get work done. Join meetings on time. Take responsibilities on the tasks.

1. More transparency about resource planning. They swap resources without advance notification that surprised us.
2. Allocated junior developers’ performances are inconsistent. Sometimes produce low quality codes and poor solutions. Need a senior developer to monitor the performance periodically.
