I teach English online independently via my website englishwithnatalia.com and with Open English. I also do online tutoring with tutorme. I decided to start a blog, as I am an immigrant from the US in Argentina.

I hired them to make a website for my blog. As an immigrant, it's part travel blog, part paperwork info, part language and culture blog.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

So the blog was a project I was interested in doing, but I hadn't started because I have a tight budget and although there are a number of free options, they tend to be so limited and it's hard to find a good one. I didn't want to pay a lot for a non-business website (it may be monetized in the future, but certainly not now), either.

Their name the Free Website Guys attracted me. I knew them being 100% free wasn't totally true, so I looked into how it worked (commission from hosting). And I was like, hey, that's a really good deal for hosting with their referral link and it's definitely worth the cost of trying out.

So I decided to give it a shot. It looked like I could get something high-quality for a low cost, which was something I was looking for, but had no idea how to find. And indeed, they were high-quality at a low cost.

So first, they walked me through setting up hosting. Then they did some stuff on the backend and gave me a progress report of that detail. This to me is one of the better perks of working with them. The backend work is so daunting, but they handle it all with ease and speed.

Then they talked to me about selecting a theme. They gave me the options of Divi or Wordpress free or something else that was more expensive than Divi. I ended up choosing Divi because it has a lifetime option that I can use on multiple websites and also it's just so much work to figure out what limitations those free themes have. I figured Divi won't have those limitations and the layout options looked fantastic.

And I am so glad I chose Divi. I absolutely love using Divi. They also walked me through getting a domain for the website. They did some backend work involving the domain and getting Divi installed to the website. Progress reports throughout the process.

Then finally they did front-end work. Here, before they started, they asked me what layout I wanted to use, asked for a logo, and how I wanted to adjust the layout. On the logo, they recommended Canva and I made one using that service.

They did it exactly to my specifications and gave me videos explaining how to further customize the website. I love that they "gave me the keys" at the end and it's been fun to customize the website.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

I haven't launched the website yet, but it has been a joy to customize and I love the SEO plugin they added. I'm sure that will help drive traffic to my website. It even seems to help my writing. I'm really excited to launch the website.

And I just love that I got to get to the fun part of the website quickly. Also, I intend to ask the Free Website Guys to move my other website over to BlueHost/Divi because it costs less, it's easier to use, and has fewer limitations than my other hosting.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

He was super communicative and answered all my questions quickly. It was all via email, but as someone who works online, email is one of the best ways to communicate with me.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I was amazed by the speed at which they completed everything and their responsiveness. I also like how they make individualized videos when handing over the website at the end, along with the progress reports. Also, I loved their recommendations. I feel like they truly know the best quality/price options there are out there.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Honestly, I can't think of anything. They were great.

I did not have a big budget and just needed something simple. The Free Website Guys have a process in place to guide you in setting up your hosting, domain, and selecting a theme. They then customize the theme the way you'd like it, and set up Google Analytics and Google Search Console for you also. They do not actually upload the imagery, graphics or copywriting, but they create a framework (the customized theme) + training videos so you can do those things yourself.

After a brief application & discovery, The Free Website Guys walked me through the process of setting up my hosting, domain, selecting a theme, and making changes to my website. There were a few final tweaks and changes I needed made, and they kindly assisted until it was complete. We accomplished this in about 2-3 months (which would have been faster if I had been able to move faster) and we communicated all through email. It was smooth and easy to manage.

There were 2 people. One project manager and a web developer.

I have not yet finished customizing and launching my website publically, but I am happy to have a beautiful theme & layout that will allow me to finish it with ease.

We communicated completely through one email thread, which made it easy to keep track of everything. They kept the ball moving by responding in a timely manner and/or following up with me when I was slow to respond.

The fact that they do this for free is very impressive and unique. I have a seven-page website at no cost. (besides the hosting, domain & theme.)

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There were a few questions I sent via email that got lost and required my follow up. But I feel that's pretty normal and wasn't a big deal to me.

We needed to create a bilingual website for the education center. Since we didn't have any IT knowledge in-house we needed someone to build a website that is esthetically appealing, easy to navigate and fast to load. The website back office had to be set up for us to be able to make simple modifications to the content down the road.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

As a non-for-profit organization our main objective was to keep down cost, for the creation of the website, as well as in the future. Which meant a website that we could maintain and modify by ourselves and not have to pay someone for every alteration.

It was all very clear and easy to grasp, and made sure expectations were kept real. They sent regular emails with status updates and step-by-step guides (often including video tutorials) whenever our team had to take action. Each step was clearly outlined with expected time frame and explanation on how and why’s. Whenever we had to make a decision (example: choosing the template), they sent us a list of a few selected recommendations including free and paid options.

Always transparent with any partnerships they may have with the suppliers and what they would gain from it. You never felt obliged to use any of their paid options. Their team build the back-end infrastructure of our website in Wordpress using a Divi template (recommended choice), optimized it for secure, quick loading, and search engine ranking to name a few. They made the basic layout to the Divi template and gave us a full tutorial on how to use the tool ourselves.

They installed TranslatePress (recommended choice) to make the site available in dual languages and helped point MX records to Google to link the domain to our Google workspace.

Our main point of contact was the Lead Developer, all email communication was with him. Prior to being accepted, we were in contact with one member of the reviews committee to complete our application.

We have not yet gone live with the website since we're still working on the content. So far, our updates are smooth and easy, all tools and plug-ins are running well and are easy for us to manage. There is little room to make mistakes which is reassuring. And all changes we've made so far look professional and load well.

The Free Website Guys offer a free service of building your website, and they have a large number of clients inquiring them. We were lucky our application was accepted. Although all communication was done via email and WhatsApp, there was never any miscommunication, it was flawless.

The acceptance email included detailed information about their working process, time frame, what we could expect from them as included in the free service, and the rates for any additional services offered. It was all very clear and easy to grasp, and made sure expectations were kept real. When our team fell behind the time line, they sent reminers to make sure we had received their latest emails.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Not only did they created a professional and slick website that’s easy to maintain, FREE OF CHARGE. They made sure we knew exactly how to manage by ourselves upon handover, teaching us all the tools and provided explanations about everything they had done. The whole experience was flawless. We’re from traditional in-person industry and were very positively surprised of how personal and genuine their communication felt.

The website looks professional, amazing. I'm responsible for providing my own copy and images to customize the site and make it my own. However, they provide detailed instruction and have encouraged me to come to them with any questions if I get stuck.

Perfect. Questions were answered within 24 hours (usually much sooner) They were encouraging, supportive and respectful of how I envisioned the site.

That there really was no catch! The offer was for a free website and that is what I got. They were upfront about all costs that were expected such as web-hosting, domain name and theme. There was no pressure (or really any request) to upgrade or buy additional things. They never rushed me into picking a theme or domain name. They updated me at every step. It was a great experience.

No! I think the most important thing was the open communication and how, although I was getting a free website, I was never made to feel like they were doing me a favor. They treated me the way I treat all of my clients with openness and warmth. Always friendly and supportive!
