I’m the director of products at Link My Pet, a company that supports a smart pet wearable and mobile app that tracks pets’ location, activity, health, and wellness to help users stay connected and proactive about their care.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenges were you trying to address with DiscoverTec?

We needed support to build a new smart pet technology platform from the ground up. The system needed to ingest and interpret complex movement data from our wearable device, define meaningful and precise activity algorithms, and communicate that information to users in an intuitive and actionable way. This was more than just app development; we needed an end-to-end connected ecosystem, and we didn’t have pre-existing models to follow.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

DiscoverTec has served as our primary development partner, supporting both the Link consumer app and LinkVet platform across web, iOS, and Android. Their scope includes full mobile app development (architecture, UI/UX implementation, testing, and deployment); ongoing maintenance, feature enhancements, and performance optimization; backend/API integrations with our IoT pet wearable; support for Bluetooth connectivity, GPS location tracking, pet activity monitoring, and health features; collaboration on user account management, plan subscriptions, and customer onboarding workflows; and implementation of CMS integrations and tools for marketing and customer engagement. The main deliverable has been a fully developed, scalable, and user-friendly mobile app platform and connecting ecosystem that integrates the Link smart pet wearable and all features and functionality.

Every member of DiscoverTec’s team is engaged with Link, from development to marketing, accounting, and IT support.

How did you come to work with DiscoverTec?

We were connected to DiscoverTec through the extended network of our ownership team, which gave us confidence in their capabilities. That relationship helped accelerate trust and collaboration from the start. We chose DiscoverTec not only because of that built-in trust from our ownership network but also because they clearly demonstrated the technical expertise, responsiveness, and collaborative mindset we needed in a development partner. Their track record with customer app development and ongoing platform support made them a natural fit for the complexity and scale of Link.

We’ve spent more than $1 million.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began our collaboration in February 2019, and it’s ongoing.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

DiscoverTec’s platform scalability has allowed our app infrastructure to support growing user volume without compromising responsiveness or reliability. We’ve also expanded our ecosystem to support veterinary industry objectives. Post-launch updates have led to improved retention and increased in-app engagement, such as improved accuracy and timeliness of GPS location tracking sessions, more frequent activity checks, and expansion of training tools and mobile remote.

We’ve seen a daily active user increase following key UI/UX enhancements. We’ve also seen an increase in average session length as users engage more with activity and wellness tracking, while we’ve seen a reduction in average session length for GPS tracking sessions due to improved timeliness and accuracy of location results, allowing faster dog recovery and reduced user frustration. We’ve also seen a 98% reduction in customer service tickets, from 1,500 per week in 2019 to 1,500 per year in 2024.

Overall, enhanced app stability and wearable performance, in addition to a more intuitive user experience, have driven a significant increase in customer satisfaction, resulting in a dramatic reduction in support tickets. This has allowed our team to shift focus from troubleshooting and retention to proactive engagement and enhancements. These changes have supported scalability, while faster development cycles have cut feature delivery time. The combined effect has improved operational efficiency, strengthened brand credibility, and optimized recurring revenue and lowered support costs, ultimately positioning Link as a market leader in the smart pet tech space.

How did DiscoverTec perform from a project management standpoint?

DiscoverTec’s project management has been highly reliable, flexible, and, most importantly, responsive to a constantly evolving tech market. They’ve consistently delivered on milestones on time, even under tight deadlines. Priorities have been adjusted based on need, and their team has maintained strong communication through each phase of development. Collaboration has ensured alignment across product, design, and development. Their ability to stay organized while working on multiple parallel facets (consumer, veterinary, backend, and support tools) has been a key factor in our ability to scale and iterate quickly.

We operate as an extension of our internal team and engage consistently through regular stand-ups and strategy calls to prioritize tasks and review progress so we’re informed every step of the way. We share project management tools and utilize Microsoft Teams for day-to-day communication to ensure a fast response time and quick alignment on technical questions or blockers. DiscoverTec is proactive and solution-oriented, often anticipating needs before we even voice them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

What stands out most about DiscoverTec is their willingness to dive headfirst into building something completely new and innovative. They don’t shy away from complexity and embrace the challenge of refining current technology and enhancing it into a product that has never existed before. Throughout the process, they’ve demonstrated a rare balance of technical expertise, empathy, and compassion. They prioritize our company’s goals and technical requirements but also understand and advocate for the experience of the end user — the pet parents. That dual focus has been instrumental in delivering a product that’s both powerful and truly meaningful to our audience.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Some of the AI development and data interpretation have posed unique challenges that could have benefited from even earlier collaborative scoping and clearer requirements, primarily due to evolving direction from our end. However, DiscoverTec’s team has quickly adapted, iterating alongside us to refine the AI and machine learning workflows powering our activity and wellness insights. As AI becomes more central to our product, their deep expertise in this area continues to be a major asset.

Discover Tec was hired to set the company up on system aligned computers and to activate and streamline our office 365 products, they also assisted with creating an onboarding document so that future hires can be added to the system with ease. They also served as our "IT staff" answering questions and providing valuable support along the way even making suggestions on how to improve our website.

In my opinion, this is where Discover Tec truly shines. They were very timely, sometimes beating deadlines. Our IT expert (Robert) is referred to as our "superhero". Preston responded to requests promptly, courteously, and professionally. He even went above and beyond to ensure we were able to get our CEO's computer up and running as she hit roadblock after roadblock. Jason Booth was also very responsive helping us find a price point that didn't undercut the value and worth of Discover Tec while not blowing our small operational budget.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Although we are not their only client, we sure felt like we were. The responsiveness, courtesy, and expert knowledge delivered in such a way where we felt like we were their only client and a very big client...even though we are not.

Are there any areas for improvement or something DiscoverTec could have done differently?

I personally would love to see a separate division or process for small nonprofits so that we can pool our resources and hire a firm like discover tec to lead us through IT issues as they arise. Because nonprofits are so unique in their structure, financial capacity, and IT needs we desparately need incredibly amazing and supportive organizations like Discover Tec to work with us.
