### Azure IaaS Solutions
As law firms migrate to the cloud, Azure IaaS is increasing in adoption. What is IaaS? IaaS stands for “Infrastructure as a Service”, which means replacing server-based workloads with the cloud. Think of IaaS as being to VMware what Exchange Online is to On-Prem Exchange.

For those who find the naming confusing, you’re not alone. Microsoft uses the Names “Azure” and “Office 365” on a number of products that can make you scratch your head. For the purposes of this article, and all subsequent entries in this series, the term Azure, unless otherwise noted, will refer to Microsoft’s IaaS platform.

VMware has worked admirably for firms over the past 10 to 20 years, so why are we looking to upset the apple cart and make changes? I will return to the Exchange Online example. Why did email infrastructure move to the cloud? Because Microsoft provided high availability and all the bells and whistles of On-Prem Exchange (and a few more) in a neatly packaged solution that left a lot less to worry about… No need to buy more storage. No need to configure load balancers. No need to worry about performing a DAG failover because your building is conducting a power down.

The IaaS solution is not without it’s complexities, but a major benefit is the opportunity to remove practically all of the physical infrastructure from the list of IT worries that keep you up at night. In addition to the the flexibility and scalability, you are spared from the challenges sourcing and maintaining local hardware.

Motivating firms to consider Azure IaaS is the important benefit to budget. The ability to power down unnecessary workloads and only pay for what you use allows you to reduce unnecessary spending.

Azure is a mammoth topic– comprised of more services and components than any single organization will ever use. The entries in this series will focus on the different components of Microsoft Azure’s IaaS solution that law firms can leverage to the meet their business goals.

### Emergency Data Backup Solution
A 500-user Litigation and Arbitration firm with eight international offices decided to take advantage of a building mandated power shutdown at their New York City office this past weekend. Their server room was chaotic, full of thickets of wires and cables that made it a challenge to manage the systems in a timely manner in the face of issues.

In preparation for the building’s power shutdown, a Kraft Kennedy consultant began by failing over the firm’s colocation facility in Phoenix so that users would have uninterrupted access to the network. From there, he and the team started work on the cleanup, completely gutting the New York server room and re-racking and re-cabling everything from scratch.

The result was a highly efficient, impeccable setup. Now, in the event of issues, the firm’s cables can easily be traced back to the hardware for faster resolution. The team also took advantage of the downtime to make several architectural changes to the network, creating a dedicated storage network for improved performance and overall network health.

### Document Management System Integration
Chuhak & Tecson, P.C. has elevated its document management system (DMS)—all the way to the cloud. Aiming for tight security and futuristic functionality the Chicago-based law firm, in partnership with the consulting firm Kraft Kennedy, has implemented NetDocuments in each of its locations, including those in New York and New Jersey.
Initially, when the firm’s DMS was due for an upgrade, management considered a different route. Judging the system to be adequate at best, they were looking for modern productivity features, up-to-date security and a user-friendly interface that would simplify processes for attorneys and staff.
Chuhak & Tecson had a choice to make. They could continue as before or opt for a software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform where the data would be hosted offsite. The firm decided on the latter, choosing NetDocuments, and then engaged IT consulting firm Kraft Kennedy, which specializes in legal technology, to assist with the implementation.
The constant gradual improvements offered by the NetDocuments SaaS model appealed to the tech-savvy law firm, according to Chief Information Officer Charlie Altenbach. The existing system required an intensive upgrade every few years to introduce new features.
“The engineers at Kraft Kennedy are clearly knowledgeable. The expertise they brought to the table was vital to the project’s success,” said Altenbach. “Our attorneys and staff were able to come into the office and work without any disruption on the Monday following our migration, which was very impressive.”
Kraft Kennedy completed a test migration and performed quality assurance before proceeding with the full deployment. Several custom migrations allowed administrative departments to preserve the folder structures of their previous DMS.
“The cutover was positioned very well, with a lot of front-end planning,” said Altenbach. “And, because of that, we received a lot of praise internally about how smoothly the project went.”
