The scope was to build out a web application using the Python Django framework. The application is hosted on Heroku. It includes a complex data model, user creation and authentication, scheduled jobs, automated emails, APIs, AJAX, and other complex funcitonality.

We used Project Management software with tickets and sprints. Finishing tickets and sprints were how we measured success

Using the tickets, we could set due dates. I could also see what tickets they were currently working on. I could put feedback on the tickets as I was testing them. We used the tickets for a lot of communication, but we also communicated via a messaging app. If needed, we hopped on Google Meets.
Everything was done on time and with the utmost professionalism. We communicated daily aboout what was being worked on and how progress was going. They delivered everything on time, and made adjustments as requested

Geek Informatic & Technologies Private Limited was tasked with developing a comprehensive ecommerce platform for our company here in Kenya using the Magento CMS.

Our product catalog consists of approximately 2500 items. Given our previous experiences, Magento was selected as the preferred CMS for our ecommerce platform. Geek Informatic & Technologies ltd was chosen as our development partner due to their demonstrated expertise in Magento development and PHP programming. 

We generated the mockups and UI designs based on our brand identity. Thereafter we sent these mockups to Geek Informatic & Technologies ltd to start off the project. The project encompassed the following key deliverables:

• Development and implementation of a product catalog system, including product attributes, descriptions, pricing in KES and categorization.
• Creation of a user-friendly shopping cart and checkout process, integrating secure local PeaPal payment gateway.
• Customer Account Management: Implementation of customer registration, account management, order history and wish list features.
• Design and User Experience (UX):
  • Creation of a visually appealing and user-centric website design that aligns with Ideal Ceramics' brand identity, following the mockups we had provided.
  • Development of a responsive website to ensure optimal viewing and functionality across different devices (desktop and mobile).
  • Implementation of an intuitive and easy-to-navigate user interface to enhance user experience.

Initially, we were concerned about potential challenges due to the geographical distance between Kenya and India, particularly considering the time difference. This collaborative approach made the entire process smooth and efficient.

While the overall experience was positive, there’s always room for improvement.

One area where they could potentially enhance their service is by further refining their communication skills in written English. Improved clarity in emails and project updates could contribute to even smoother collaboration.

However this was not an issue for us, we are extremely satisfied with their work. We are so pleased with the results that we have engaged them for the third phase of our project.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We have a long-term relationship with Geek Informatic & Technologies Private Limited. We’ve worked with them since the design stage on iterative development, UI, and basic proof of concept technology, which we’ve brought to our customers to get feedback. We’ve continuously improved the product until we had a functioning, market-ready solution — they’ve developed everything from the beginning.

They use cloud-native technologies such as Node.js, JavaScript, MongoDB, and Angular. We’ve mainly worked with their engineering team, but we’ve also had on-and-off support from people on their marketing team and resources for UX, project management, and testing.

What is the team composition?

We have a mix of frontend and backend developers and other specialists. Right now, we just have two full-time engineers. When a customer request comes through, we sometimes grow the team to get through a project. However, we’ve never had more than 7–8 people.

We’ve had customer feedback. Moreover, our customers accept our product, and we’re making money. All in all, we’ve gotten everything we need from them. They’ve been a solid partner; if every area of our business were that easy to deal with, we’d be doing much better.

We’ve had project managers aside from them, mainly when we grew the team. We actually run the project management from our side, but their project managers have been effective. Also, they’re detail-oriented. When we give them detailed specifications, they quickly give us exactly what we ask for.

They operate on our project management tool because we have a UX team, so they’re on our platforms and systems. We use Google Meet to communicate and meet with them almost every day.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve worked with several providers throughout India, and their staff is exceedingly hardworking and dedicated. We haven’t had that with other firms. The leadership and culture in their organization are exceptional. Maybe it’s how they recruit or manage their team, but the dedication and commitment are outstanding.

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head.

Any customer looking to develop software should think about what they’re trying to accomplish in a detailed way. Also, they should maintain frequent contact.

Through Upwork. They had a good hourly rate with good reviews and experience with a product that was somewhat similar to what I was developing.

Development has taken much longer than originally expected but we were making very measurable progress the first 4 years. Budgets got tight so development intentionally slowed into the end of 2021 but now that we are making a final push to release the product, the project is having a hard time getting momentum again.

Where are using Basecamp as a project management tool. The project team has been great but we are in the transition from one project manager to another so we are reestablishing our rhythm.

The design of the mobile product look was strong but I feel it lost a bit of the design creativity when we moved to the web piece.
