Can you briefly describe your company?

We are an educational software company that creates test preparation software for students of all ages. We are located in South Florida.

What were your goals for the project?

We have developed software that allows students to create their own tests since 1984. The tests that students can create can be in any subject, and through the years we have developed a database of more than 600,000 questions for students to choose from. Since we first created the software, we have made it available on the various emerging computer systems that students use. As many schools are adopting iPads, we needed to find a development partner with experience developing iOS applications.

Blue Whale Apps developed an application for the iPad, as well as a console that allows us to manage the database of questions available for students using the iPad to choose from.

We are a neurology clinic that is also actively involved in research, based in Western Massachusetts.

What were your goals going into the project?

Our clinic had created a five-minute test for neurocognition. This test was able to quickly assess dementia and impairment levels in elderly patients. We had completed the research and testing stages, and wished to commercialize the intellectual property that we had created. We figured that a mobile application was the best way to distribute the test to a variety of commercial and clinical settings.

SOLUTION

How did you discover Blue Whale Apps?

We found a website that listed various developers, including costs and examples of their work. We wanted to work with a high-quality company that also had the time for a smaller client like ourselves. After narrowing our search to two final companies, we interviewed both of them. Blue Whale Apps had much better sense of our business focus, and clearly defined when the project terms, including when the project will be considered complete.

I’m the founder of a music video content platform.

What challenge were you trying to address with Blue Whale Apps?

We needed Blue Whale Apps to provide web and custom software development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Blue Whale Apps has developed our website from scratch using Heroku. In addition, they’ve done custom software development. The team has done everything including wireframes, user experience, architecture, and development. The platform is primarily for the music industry and displays people’s music video experiences. We also incorporated a networking service to bring customers and talent together. Some users watch music videos on our platform for entertainment purposes. Other users can log in, create an account, and use the platform to land a job in a music video. Blue Whale Apps now provides maintenance and support.

I researched a few web development companies that were referred to me. I had a good feeling about Blue Whale Apps and also had a good experience with them in the past. When I explained what we wanted, they understood what I wanted and had a clear idea of what they were going to do.

The project cost $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in July 2021, and the collaboration is ongoing.

Blue Whale Apps has been able to create not only an entertainment platform but a marketplace. We are happy with their work. 

How did Blue Whale Apps perform from a project management standpoint?

Blue Whale Apps delivers on time and on budget. We communicate through Basecamp and phone calls. It’s very easy to communicate with each other. They make needed changes quickly. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Since Blue Whale Apps has a small team, it’s very easy to build a relationship with them. We’re impressed by their ability to deliver according to what we request.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The time difference for their resources in India can sometimes be an issue when it comes to communication. However, the work always gets done.

Have a clear scope at the beginning and give them clear instructions on what you want and don’t want.
