I’m the senior manager of marketing and communications for a non-profit organization. We showcase the history and stories of the Great Lakes region through interactive exhibits, rare artifacts, and experiences, while also supporting maritime research and education.

We needed help designing, developing, and printing our updated visitor guide with guidance from our team. We also needed help producing a 120-page magazine publication using our copy and photography assets.

thunder::tech took our copy document and designed the full publication based on our inputs and content. They produced the look and feel of the entire publication. Their team delivered a 120-page magazine publication that helps position the museum as the gathering place for Great Lakes conversations. It’s a beautiful piece that helps us further relationships with regional partners, donors, and visitors. thunder::tech also managed the printing and production of the magazine with Metzgers.

We’ve received incredible feedback from content partners, the board, and donors. Everyone has loved the publication and finds it valuable. We’ve also sold 25 units. We’ve seen verbal feedback, sales in the museum store, engagement with donors, and vision awareness growth.

For the most part, we remained on the timeline. We mainly communicated through virtual meetings.

thunder::tech built an ecommerce portal for one of our customers to place orders, in about an 8-day turnaround. This project leveraged WordPress and WooCommerce. The final ecommerce experience needed to have the ability to have multiple users per customer account, as well as users assigned to a location. This also included plugin install, design application, import of products & SKUs, and limitations to be in place based on where a user is located. The team staged an ecommerce solution, and after a testing and quality assurance period, were able to launch the site with high quality, professionalism and within timeline.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Our client gave excellent feedback with the portal thunder::tech developed, and the site met all functional goals. Not only is this a great portal for our client currently, but we can continue to leverage as a template for future ecommerce environments we will need to set up for our clients in future.

Project management throughout this project was exceptional. Deliverables were launched on-time, and their team’s direct communication style was paramount for a successful result. We needed a reliable partner to make this happen, and thunder::tech delivered. This was an all-hands-on-deck, scrappy type of project because it needed to be. Despite this, the process was surprisingly painless, especially when the functions we were asking for all passed the test during QA and BETA.

thunder::tech redesigned and expanded our WordPress website. The team handled all the design and development and provided CMS training. The team focused mainly on the website design and development.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We received a brand-new, beautiful, modern website with expanded functionality and the ability to manage it completely in-house. Our website traffic has doubled year-over-year from the previous website. In addition, our inbound leads are up, utilizing the new website submission form.

How did thunder::tech perform from a project management standpoint?

Our project management was a little up and down. The project was delivered about three months late due to various circumstances, including changes to their team. The first three months at the design stage were good. Then, during the last three months at the development stage, the project management was very good. However, there was a lull in the middle portion. To be fair, that was also during the holidays. We communicated through virtual meetings, emails, and messaging apps.

I’m the marketing communications manager of a manufacturing company. We design, manufacture, and distribute clean drinking water systems, including bottle filling stations, drinking fountains, and filtration solutions. We serve global markets with a focus on innovation and sustainability for over 115 years.

We needed a full-service agency to assist with digital updates for our website. We had a complex ask for our outdated web platform.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We have many projects constantly open with thunder::tech across multiple areas. They’ve updated the UX design of our website’s landing pages. They’ve also developed and managed a customer-facing portal for accessing order information, including tracking, purchase orders, and inventory.

Moreover, thunder::tech has managed our paid advertising campaigns for specific markets and messaging. They’ve also provided direction on the messaging, managed the campaigns, and made recommendations for continued adjustments.

In addition, thunder::tech has integrated data sources into our website, managed our SEO optimization, handled videography and photoshoots, and overseen our security and hosting.

We’ve worked with 6–10 teammates from thunder::tech. There are many involved with each project.

How did you come to work with thunder::tech?

I had a referral from someone who was an intern with them a long time ago, as well as a referral from a previous coworker. We knew we would have a complex ask for our outdated web platform and needed a full-service agency to assist with digital updates for our website.

thunder::tech had the expertise to deal with our outdated web platform. The software we use isn’t commonly known, and they were able to address and update all our issues. While they’re on the higher end of the cost, their full-service capabilities were key for finding the right partner to assist our smaller marketing team.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with thunder::tech in September 2023, and our partnership is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

thunder::tech has completed and launched the ordering portal. They’ve also launched the updated UX designs and features built out on our website. Moreover, they’ve connected data from our CMS and PIM to our website. We’ve seen an increase in clicks, impressions, and engagement from our paid lead generation campaigns.

User feedback has been key for us. We’ve heard that the portal is easy to use and helpful as a sales tool. Like every project there are bumps in the road with many cooks in the kitchen however we were able to navigate with a almost weekly meeting with my team and developers to address and proritize feedback.

How did thunder::tech perform from a project management standpoint?

thunder::tech does a pretty good job with project management. As mentioned before, there have been some challenges with the portal, and the delivery has been delayed. However, this has also been due to changing expectations on my end for that project.

Regarding advertising, the project management is good. However, I’m not seeing as many leads as I thought. Still, we have pretty limited parameters around the campaigns that are being run.

For web development, I’m pleased with the project management and responsiveness from both the support team and individual developers.

What did you find most impressive or unique about them?

thunder::tech’s knowledge base is impressive. It’s nice to work with a professional team that can help in multiple areas of our business. When I was looking into them, that was what first attracted me to thunder::tech: their professionalism.

We had experienced the opposite from a previous developer. thunder::tech came in and shined. I didn’t have any issues introducing them to our corporate company to address issues found from previous developers on the site. thunder::tech had a plan of attack to address all those issues.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I’m happy with thunder::tech’s web development. I would say that paid advertising is still an ongoing learning curve for us personally. We’re not seeing the exact results, but again, it could be due to the limitations in place for the campaigns.

After working through the communication challenges for the portal (again, some of those challenges are on our side), we’ve successfully accomplished the task at hand.

The scope of this project included a complete redesign and relaunch of a robust higher education website. 

The key deliverables included the following:

User Experience research, which involved many surveys and interviews with current students, along with focus groups with staff, faculty, board and senior leadership. 

Site map development, which involved rethinking how we should structure the new site based on the research. 

Design Ideation, involved presenting various directions for the visual aspect of the new site.

Limited mockups/site renderings, included renderings of various modules and how they would appear on the site/could be layed out.

Full template mockups, which included laying out a bunch of templates using various created modules based on our needs. 

Front end development, involved coding and making the template mockups come to life.

Application development, creating the Wordpress CMS system for our website.

Third-Party integrations involved setting up plugins and third party platforms like Paycor, Raisers edge and various others.

Quality assurance. The week before launch, T::T ran quality assurance to make sure all the dots were dotted before launch.

There were many. The main one included launching a brand new site within one year of the start of the project (which occured).

The project management was AMAZING! James was uber communicative and was very responsive to our needs. Especially as they changed throughout the project. 

He was always making sure to keep us updated on progress against timeline, budget and hours. Making sure to present us our options and how they could impact all of the above. There were many places were we needed to pivot throughout the project and James and the PM team made that super easy.

Their development abilities. They were able to do front end development and application development and beta testing and edits all within 3 1/2 months. And create a site that looks amazing and is already showing divadends for us in terms of website traffic. We could ask for something and they were able to make it happen in development or find a way to make it happen.

Are there any areas for improvement or something thunder::tech could have done differently?

Where we ended up with design was amazing but I think on some projects, making sure to give some room for design iteration and space to sit on it could be helpful. We ended up putting this as part of the process and it was really to our benefit. I think it could be something that becomes helpful to other clients as well.

• We maintained a detailed project management process to ensure both Thunder::Tech and our internal resources held to the project timeline. We also set benchmark KPIs based on the performance of the previous site and the newly developed site using many industry-standard KPIs for visitor engagement and demand generation.

Our organizational cultures meshed very well from Day 1, which continues today. We had weekly meetings for PM touchpoints, design reviews, and milestone reviews. We tracked project status via an online portal. THunder::Tech delivered all milestones and the site launch on time. Not only did Thunder::Tech's team respond to our needs, but they also coached us through the process. 

Multiple times they led us through business needs discussions, helped manage scope creep, and provided alternative ideas and solutions to our "wants." One thing we appreciate about our partnership on this project is our team was willing to tell us "no" and then explain why. Sometimes they helped us realize we didn't need something we were asking for. Other times, they refocused us on our site launch and helped build a post-launch enhancement strategy.

As noted, our company cultures mesh very well. We truly had fun working together. They pushed us to be better and allowed us to do the same. Thunder::Tech is not territorial with their work. I wouldn't change anything outside of some initial account management turnover early in our project. Thunder::Tech's leadership team remedied the staffing situation, and we've had a tremendous multi-year relationship with our AM and many key team members.

ThunderTech used Basecamp as the primary project management software. We were also assigned one of the best project managers I've ever worked with. More than just managing timelines and deliverables, he was extremely knowledgeable and provided fantastic insight and guidance along the way!

Very talented group of individuals, from UI/UX to design to app dev. The company was committed to producing a high-quality product and ensured that the customer was kept happy.

As with any large project, scoping is a critical element to a high-performing project. We have a very complicated backend system that needed to integrate to the new site, and probably could have used a little more time for discovery.
