I’m the CEO and co-founder of Superfy, a startup that offers an iOS application that allows users to ask questions about any topic. The app connects you to a relevant person to answer it in real-time, and users receive their answers in a live chat. It’s the only place online where you can get live answers from real people in just 20 seconds.

What challenge were you trying to address with New Line Technologies?

We needed someone to develop our iOS app. We had one, but it was built in C++, so it wasn’t smooth enough.

What was the scope of their involvement?

New Line developed our iOS app from scratch in Swift to ensure it supported a large scale of users. It was a very complex AI-based technology, so there were a lot of challenges to make it work properly and run fast. It had a lot of animations and add-ons that were more sophisticated than the regular iOS app.

The first phase was to rebuild the application from scratch. Once it was up and running, they sent us the main challenges or things they had to do overtime. First, we talked about dealing with bugs because the app was working slowly and was complicated to use.

Then, New Line did some code refactoring to make the software easier to understand. We talked about the logic and added new features. Additionally, they had to rebuild the architecture, migrate to a local database, and work around navigation within the app a few times.

As far as technologies, it was written in Swift, but they’ve also used Realm, AWS, Firebase, AppsFlyer, and so on. It looks like a chat app, but it can do a live chat. Users have their profiles, in which they have a profile gallery and can share the app. We have plans to do the Android version, and they do maintenance on an ongoing basis.

We have two iOS developers and a project manager. For specific issues, another developer helps us, and we’ve also used some of their designers.

How did you come to work with New Line Technologies?

We received a very warm recommendation from another Israeli startup that’s worked with them. They said they did quality work and delivered fast.

How much have you invested with them?

We pay $3,500–$4,000 per month.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in January 2019, and the relationship is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We currently have 300,000 users on the app, which are primarily from the US. Also, user feedback has been good; we haven’t received complaints. We’re rated 4.6 in the App Store with over 9,000 ratings.

We had a lot of bugs throughout the year, but most of them were fixed immediately. We used to have many more crashes on the app, but now 97% of the users have a crash-free app experience. There were a few more complicated bugs, and New Line’s team was very adamant about finding the problem and solving them.

How did New Line Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

They’re always very proactive. They don’t wait for us to complain or raise issues — they monitor it themselves.  The team provides good estimates and sticks to the schedule. They also check from time to time to make sure everything is working correctly. Overall, they’re professional, and their service is excellent.

We mainly use Telegram to communicate, but we also have Zoom calls. Their English is really good, and they’re always very responsive — even on weekends if there’s something urgent.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The quality of the developers is good. We’ve worked with other outsource companies, but their developers weren’t as professional. New Line is very committed — it’s important to them that we’re satisfied.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Sometimes we feel they’re not as familiar with something, so they try to learn it quickly. Their team needs to continue to learn new technologies.

I’m the IT manager at CCF Centro Commerciale GmbH, a wholesaler of commercial Fiat transporter cars. Our customers are mostly business customers. We’re not only a seller of cars, but we also have a service station to have your car repaired, replace your tires, have an oil change, etc.

What challenge were you trying to address with New Line Technologies?

We had a lot of different projects and our IT department was too small to meet the needs, so we decided to outsource our projects.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We have four different projects. We built an online webshop where we offer specific cars and our customers can order the cars directly for special conditions that are much better than if they placed an order in our company directly.

Another project is to build a mobile application for our customers. The application tracks if any customers are in the range of our service stations. If we have a service station, we can create special offers and push notifications to our customers via this app. The notification targets them that if they come right now, we can change their oil for half the price, for example. The mobile app is not started. We have three other projects though.

Before we hired them, we had a very big project and it took almost three years for us to do. One of our projects with New Line Technologies is to renew this big project. We’re not yet done but the estimation of this project is much faster than if we made it ourselves.

There’s one developer and one UX/UI designer for one project we have. Our UI/UX designer is the same designer for all projects. I’m in contact with five developers and designers. I’m also in contact with Serhii (CEO) and a technical architect.

How did you come to work with New Line Technologies?

We found them on Clutch and looked at a few companies. We were looking at Ukraine because I came from Ukraine. I’m often there and I know there are a lot of good developers there for cheaper money than we’d pay here in Germany. New Line Technologies left the best impression and we felt they were the best choice for us. The other two were also good but they were better.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about €30,000–€40,000 (approximately $35,000–$47,000 USD) so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in November 2019 and the work is ongoing.

We’re very satisfied with the quality of their work. I’m very happy with them. Since using them, projects have gone faster.

We make calls in Microsoft Teams or Google Hangouts and share our display.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The quality of the software is much better than it was. It’s also much cheaper and faster.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Not every developer communicates at the same level. If we have to communicate with the director of our company, who doesn’t speak Ukrainian or Russian, we communicate with them in English. It’s not really a problem or something they need to improve, but communicating in English is a bit harder in general.

Although the teams worked great there were some misalignments that caused both teams to spin , More alignment on overall agenda is needed. Overall quality was good but it might be good to implement even additional testing to avoid regression bugs in later stages.

We stuck very close to the timeline to deliver the project and ship to the market timely. The impact has been significant to our operation as some StoreMe customers prefer to transact on the web and not download and transact through a mobile app.

How was project management arranged and how effective was it?

Very good. Sergey was the lead on the project. He has both hard and soft skills to work with my team in the US. Their development team was organized utilizing youtracker to manage sprints and set realistic weekly goals and deliverables.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They have a deep bench to pick from and to rotate the right technical skills for the project as development needs change. Their developers care and are willing to help at times when we wouldn't expect them to be available. They are also very transparent, which was super important to me. Currently, we’re done with all urgent and crucial issues and now we are working on platform development and support.

What was the scope of their involvement?

New Line Technologies adapted very well to our different technologies. They set up a plan with specific steps that we can follow. Having this system in place enables us to change the system as needed and level up our different programs internally.

Project management has gone very well. New Line Technologies is highly reactive and makes it easy to communicate. Upper-level management is always available and ready to help. They give us useful advice and bring in new ideas to leverage the technologies we use. 

Every three months, I visit their offices for a few days. We always have very productive discussions. Their leadership makes time to meet with me so we can share ideas for improvement.

New Line Technologies is very transparent. We always know which person from their team is working on any specific task. They’re very honest if they ever make a mistake. Rather than hiding it, they explain what’s going on.

What did you find most impressive about them?

New Line Technologies is very good at communication. It rarely takes more than an hour to get feedback on any issue from them. They work very hard and feel like a part of our team. They do whatever it takes to meet our requirements within the timelines we set for them. Transparency from their side ensures we always know what’s going on.

I'm the head of partnerships at Kuvacash, a FinTech startup with a particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. As we're an early stage startup, we all wear many hats, so I've been heavily involved with New Line in shaping product requirements and delivery.

We are building a 'bank in the sky' to accelerate financial inclusion in markets where there are significant numbers of underbanked individuals or where the existing banking sector is not deemed reliable by the local population.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Kuvacash is building an end-to-end money system for customers in developing economies. The solution includes a HD digital wallet (based on BIP-44 protocol) and web portal that allows for the receipt, storage, and payment of funds in cryptocurrency as well as onboarding and offboarding between fiat and cryptocurrency. 

Our team delivers the requirements and provides the design flats, while New Line Technologies does the front- and backend development as well as integration with open source tools and non-open source solutions, such as Bitcore Wallet Service, the Dash cryptocurrency, and third-parties that support, for example, international payments. The digital wallet also allows users to hedge against cryptocurrency volatility with proprietary technology developed by our team, which New Line Technologies integrated into the wallet and infrastructure system. The team also manages sprint planning with our oversight and provides first-level quality assurance while our team does user acceptance testing (UAT). 

New Line Technologies has also developed an agent scheduling system (for local cash outs), a robust backend, with user-level security access to different modules, an accounting ledger with reporting, and a host of other security features specific to HD wallets.

We have a dedicated project manager who is also a developer. He’s full-time on our project. We have one or two QA resources. The team includes less than 10 people.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The software is ready, but there’s one major feature we want to develop and release before we go to our full pilot. We’ve been able to accelerate big, important partnerships, which we expect to give us customers in the thousands and tens of thousands. We have a credible, functioning product that we can demo. It functions smoothly within our closed ecosystem.

How did New Line Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

They provide daily status reports on the three projects that are ongoing. They provide detailed release notes on our releases to different environments. I have a daily scrum meeting with the project lead and our internal testing lead. They’ve dealt especially well with changing requirements. A few times, they’ve pushed hard to get a release out prior to a partner demo, and they’ve accommodated us with the time zone difference. Project management has been exceedingly positive. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re sharpening their skills in this new domain of cryptocurrency and HD wallets. They’ve been creative in developing solutions rather than just taking requirements and delivering them. They ask a lot of questions and give us feedback if something doesn’t fit best practices.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Early on, we had some UI issues in our delivered builds that should never have reached our UAT team. Somewhat related, we found that the internal QA was sometimes lacking early on in the project. We have provided ongoing feedback to their team and both of these areas have improved significantly.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

For longer-term projects, I would negotiate to have someone on their team that is dedicated solely to your project. Especially given that it is an offshore development team, that continuity is really important. Having that single dedicated resource (who happens also to be excellent) has been a positive for us.

I’m the head of engineering for Teragence, a startup working in the telecommunications space. We measure the quality of operators' mobile network coverage worldwide via crowdsourcing.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with New Line Technologies?

We were looking for a partner that could come in through an onboarding process, take a look at our solution, and discover to what extent it was possible to implement an iOS version of our Android system. We didn’t have any in-house iOS development expertise, and, according to our estimations, it wouldn’t have made sense for us to hire someone full-time. We later expanded the scope to include improving our Android app and server-side infrastructure and implementing a GDPR-compliant data scheme.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They took responsibility for creating an iOS software development kit (SDK) and a demo app. It would join our Android SDK in talking to our .NET and Windows-based server-side measurement infrastructure (where coverage data is aggregated, repackaged, and sent down the line to the operators). After that, we started handling a consistent stream of change requests geared toward improving our Android SDK. They took over for the kit’s in-house creator, who gradually decreased their involvement in our company.

We then needed to upgrade our entire solution to be GDPR-compliant. While we developed the new data scheme ourselves, we relied on New Line to implement it because of the short time frame we faced.

Beyond these projects, they also rolled out the second version of our API and upgraded our server side and databases. Additionally, they instituted multiple new machines to deal with the twenty-fold increase we saw in active devices communicating with the backend; it required horizontal scaling and the introduction of more hardware. They ensured everything was connected and configured and was addressing our customers’ data needs.

What is the team composition?

New Line provides us with resources on an ad hoc basis given that we’re in a relatively early stage of development and it’s hard for us to commit to a full team. Overall, we’re using 2–4 people including DevOps, data analysis, and Android development resources, among others. Not all of them are full-time; they may work full-time hours over a certain period, but they can also dwindle to a quarter of full-time.

How did you come to work with New Line Technologies?

I had a general idea of what they did because I know someone who worked there. They’d also worked with another startup that happened to be run by one of our co-founders. Back when our co-founder chose them as our technology partner, he did thorough research and looked at a quite few companies. He ended up being happy with the results and the price.

For this project, we checked a few available options on sites like Upwork and considered using someone local in the UK because we saw the benefit of building a physical technology presence. Because of time constraints and other issues, we asked New Line for an estimate on the iOS work. We ended up choosing them because of their promptness and pricing. After that, because everything was working as it should, there wasn't a strong reason to go elsewhere for the Android and GDPR work.

How much have you invested with them?

I wasn’t in charge of the invoices, so I wouldn’t bet my salary on it, but I think we’ve spent between $120,000–$150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’ve been working together since August 2017. The initial iOS piece took 2–3 months to complete.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

While we do have technical metrics and other data, I’d attribute those to our combined effort rather than to just our team or just theirs. However, we've seen growth in installation velocity and the number of measurements we receive (which means more people are using the apps), and we needed those things to happen. Aside from the product work, the GDPR tasks allowed us to stay in business, which our partners were worried about.

We’re happy with the job New Line has done, as well as the price we pay, so we’ve transitioned into a standing engagement. It would be difficult to manageably recreate the expertise and support that New Line provides. They offer a diverse set of resources that enables us to worry much less about project and resource management than we used to.

How did New Line Technologies perform from a project management standpoint?

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag. The SDK and updated infrastructure were ready before the final date but it would’ve been nice to have them one week before the launch. However, it didn’t result in any serious consequences for us.

The GDPR project ran a bit off-schedule relative to our expectations. New Line could have been more knowledgeable initially about the project's challenges but that would have been the case with anyone else, given how new GDPR was. On the other hand, they discovered something I'd missed during the planning stage. I give them credit for discovering that, proposing a solution, and getting it done. Even though we were late, we didn’t miss any hard deadlines.

New Line sends us status reports on ongoing issues and keeps me in the loop regarding where we are. If something needs a deeper investigation, they’ll prod me along to make sure it happens. Sometimes we have to make decisions quickly, which happens best on our side given that we have more experience in certain areas. That being said, since we need to react quickly and often work without the most detailed functional requirements, I’ve encouraged New Line’s managers to help us develop solutions instead of expecting us to reassemble the results on our side.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Our CEO describes them as “get-stuff-done people," and I’ve been quite happy with New Line in this regard. I understand that ours isn’t the most optimal setup for a service provider (the customer not committing to full-time resources), but they’ve handled it very well. Their overall response time is also fantastic.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would've been lovely if they were able to onboard faster and gain a better understanding of what we’re trying to achieve, but this is wishful thinking given the type of provider they are. We also would’ve liked to have a person on their side be ready to talk to us, understand our business needs, and come up with a solution based on them. This would’ve made my life easier, but it’s hardly realistic. In this case, New Line would’ve charged much more, and the overall level of engagement would’ve been fundamentally different.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Theoretically speaking, someone could be unhappy with what New Line offers if they came in with the wrong expectations. If they’re looking for a service provider that can supply resources, stick to the initial tasks, provide clear visibility regarding how their team thinks and what side-effects and consequences they see coming in the future, they’ll be fine.

I’m the CEO of a recruiting company. We run an online platform that allows online influencers to directly connect with potential clients, removing the need for an agent. With our service, influencers keep a greater share of their income, clients pay less overall, and we allow them to track payments instantly through our platform.

What was the scope of their involvement?

A member of our in-house team provided a blueprint of the code architecture and our team also handles most of the frontend design. New Line Technologies dealt with the backend, although they’ve also assisted us on the frontend as well. It’s a unique build and somewhat atypical for them, so they’ve been really eager to work on it.

We initially worked with two of their developers, but now we’re up to six. Two are frontend, two are backend, and two perform QA.

They were recommended by one of our investors who’d worked with them before. We’d been considering either outsourcing or bringing on someone in-house, but once we got this recommendation we decided to take it.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We measure success by how seamlessly connections happen for our customers and their clients. With this project, we’ve hit a few roadblocks and bumps along the way, which is to be expected as we scale up the size of our platform. New Line’s team has always resolved any issues that come up. We’re also very clear about what we need and how we need it delivered. Our biggest concern is that we make successful transactions via our platform, and that’s been happening.

We had a designated member of our team who handled most communication with them since they’re overseas. They’re very communicative, open, and transparent about what’s happening with the project and how it’s progressing. We’ve got a good synergy and my team really enjoys working with them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re smart and reliable. I appreciate their openness and willingness to work with us when we’ve had challenges with the product. They’re very collaborative and they’ll help us generate ideas to keep us moving forward. It doesn’t feel like they’re an outside contractor.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I think when you’re working in tech, you always wish things could be done faster, but that’s not possible. That’s my only criticism, but I’m happy with their work and our working relationship. They’ve surpassed my expectations.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you’re planning to outsource, make sure you have someone on your own team who can manage the relationship. New Line’s team is pretty independent, which is good for you, but it helps to have someone who can touch base and follow along with the progress of the project.
