A dedicated (and highly efficient) project manager worked with me throughout the ten or so months of this extended project. There was also a single dedicated software engineer and occasional backend specialists.

The project was constantly reviewed and amended - and the Narola team were flexible and eager to improve the product. As a result, the app was very robust and almost entirely bug free on its in initial release

The developer was easy to work with and was always available to answer my questions and offer suggestions. They were also very responsive to any changes or updates that I wanted to make, and they made sure to keep me in the loop throughout the entire process.

They were incredibly patient with me (a novice technical manager) and they were very proactive with suggestions of best practice solutions - and always informed me ahead of time if requests conflicted or were simply not possible

It took very little time for us to develop a good working relationship and I have no complaints or suggestions for improvement

I’m a project manager for an innovative devices company. We create devices, websites, and mobile applications for companies from many industries, including automotive and gastronomic.

I was looking for a business partner to help us design and develop Android and iOS mobile applications according to our client’s requirements. Our priority was to find a partner who could provide multiple development solutions and work on various projects simultaneously.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’ve worked on several mobile application projects with Narola. They’ve helped us with everything from creating registered end user logins to pairing devices to mobile applications via Bluetooth. They’ve also helped us link our external devices to each other and with other devices not created by us. We’ve maintained the same process for each of our projects. 

We typically start by sending them preliminary documentation, which they review and develop into specific requirements. Then, they estimate all the features of the application, and we meet to discuss the project budget. After outlining the budget, they create mock-ups for the application, which we review to ensure they match our initial specifications. Then, they develop the apps using Copley for Android and Swift for iOS. We host all our projects on our servers, but Narola continues to support us with maintenance after developing an application.

For one of our projects, we created an eco-friendly home-management device that enables users to connect their appliances to a dedicated mobile application. Although we’re still in the testing phase, our goal is for customers to use the device to control their power consumption better. 

The Narola team helped us pair our external device with the mobile application they created from scratch for iOS and Android. They also made specific plans to define how external devices would work in tandem with the app based on the parameters we gathered. Additionally, they created functionality for users to set time limits on their home appliances. For example, users can program the device to turn off their air conditioning for two hours daily. 

Currently, we have 3–4 applications in the development stage with Narola, including one for our automotive client. They’ve created a mobile application that pairs with a device that gathers car data. The app acts as a transmitter between the device and the server and displays charts based on the collected data.

About 7–8 of our customers use the software Narola Infotech Solutions has developed. The platform is growing quite a bit — we signed on three clients within three months. Whenever there are bugs, they rectify them within our agreed-upon timeframe.

During the development phase, Narola Infotech Solutions sent daily updates via Slack and Skype. We also had weekly catch-ups to discuss ongoing development and testing and the platform's performance. Their team used Jira for project management. They met all of our deadlines, and if there were any delays, we knew about them immediately. Narola Infotech Solutions' good communication surprised me because I had communication issues with other outsourced vendors I'd worked with.

The quality is excellent, and we’re very happy with the app. The rating is close to four stars in both app stores. Some users have had a problem registering, but sometimes that’s due to the user not being able to receive the activation code in their email, as it might end up in their spam folder. However, most users really like the app and have given it a four or five-star rating.

They’ve delivered the product on time and within our budget. All of our communication has been through freelance.com.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Working with them has been very pleasant; we’ve really enjoyed the collaboration. They’re true professionals with a lot of experience. It has been easy to work with them. We’re not good at English or programming, but they understand us when we ask questions.

I can’t remember any issues that need attention. We’ve had some minor misunderstandings, but I can’t advise them on what they need to work on.

We wanted to produce a facial recognition platform. There was nothing else like it being done, so there were many challenges just to put that together and make it functional.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Narola Infotech Solutions has developed two mobile apps for iOS and Android for end-users and one web platform for the business. We started some time ago as a concept and wanted to build a proof of concept. The whole purpose of the platform is to allow a distribution channel for people who take professional photographs of people’s experiences —whether it’s a theme part, a conference, an expo, a concert, or a nightclub. If somebody wants to take a photograph to monetize it or use it as marketing collateral on social media, the challenge is being able to get the person in the photo. Using facial recognition allows for the images to be delivered directly to the people in them in real-time.

What is the team composition?

We usually speak to 3–4 team leaders, and there are people underneath them doing the coding. There are probably about 10 people on the team.

We have a main point of contact for the app development, a main point of contact for the web platform, and a business manager.

We found them on Upwork. We posted a brief, and they were one of about 8–9 companies we shortlisted. What closed it on them was the initial conversation we had about the project brief. They understood what we were trying to do straight away and were able to nail down some of the big potential challenges we’d have.

We started working with them in May 2017, and our engagement is ongoing. They still work on development, maintenance, and new modules.

We tackle a module at a time, and that’s our key metric. We put the work out to beta test it, and depending on what feedback we get, we ask them to do navigational or logic changes in the software. It’s just an ongoing process.

Project management is fantastic. We’ve worked with a couple of other companies, but they just don’t keep up like them. Narola Infotech Solutions communicates well and gets the job done.

We use Taskworld, Zoom calls, and messages to communicate. We also used Smartsheet for a while. In general, they bend and use whatever project management tool we use.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They understood what we were trying to achieve very quickly, which has made all the difference. We don’t have to go backward and forwards. Usually, miscommunication can happen when describing something complicated, but they just seem to understand what we’re doing. 

Also, they provide great feedback. If they think something won’t work, they give us the reasons or the risks involved. It’s a great collaboration.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t have anything off the top of my head.

Always make sure that you write a descriptive brief. During the initial meeting, you’ll go through it line by line to see what’s understood and what’s expected on both sides. If you don’t give details, it can cost you time and money in the long run.

I was working at a large Swiss bank and running a nonprofit on the side while I developed a prototype for the platform myself. However, I consider myself a hobbyist coder and was looking for an offshore team to take over.

I sent Narola my prototype for a social impact platform that connects companies and their employees to nonprofit organizations. They then developed the platform in a .NET framework that runs on AWS. Narola also provides AWS Cloud engineering services.

I am the CEO, but I have a technical background and have worked with larger technology organizations. What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The platform went live in 2017, and it has been stable since its launch. I am a developer myself, and I am happy with the quality of their code. Because we work quickly as a team, we’ve been able to do a lot of platform optimization. 

We get some negative feedback from our clients, but it’s usually the result of a poorly defined business process on my end.

How did Narola Infotech Solutions LLP perform from a project management standpoint?

My team handles project management and business analysis. Narola’s team adapted to our agile system — we run weekly sprints, and Narola takes tasks from our Trello board. They then independently develop, test, and deploy the platform changes. 

The downside of working fast is that we sometimes have to revisit and redo different aspects of the code — the Narola developers and testers can fix most bugs. Those issues are primarily due to my ever-changing coding requirements. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m impressed by Narola’s ability to work within my workflow requirements — they accommodate the way I want to run the team and provide the skillsets I need. It’s also powerful that their team can run independently and can help serve the larger banks on our client list.  

Narola also respected the fact that we’re a nonprofit and adapted their cost structure to fit us.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only challenge we’ve had with Narola is talent retention. They generally hire newer developers who tend to move on after 3–4 years. However, the market for developers is hot, and any employer would be challenged to keep developers on for a long time. 

Narola makes up for the personnel changes by covering the cost of the knowledge transfers. 

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

I’ve already referred Narola to a few colleagues, including a friend who owns a wine business and a Swiss startup that needed help with their AWS. I’ve already advised them, and would advise any other clients, to give Narola precise specifications to ensure clients get the best results. 

However, I wouldn’t recommend that clients work directly with the development team because of the language barrier — Narola provides a project manager who can relay and interpret requirements to the developers.
