Catchword led our team through a comprehensive rebranding exercise, beginning with the establishment of parameters for both name and identity development. Once we had agreed on messaging, tone, and style for the new brand, they developed a ton of creative names for our consideration, each one supported by a meaningful rationale and explanation for how it tied back to our target positioning and brand personality. 
Honestly, the quality of the creative work was tremendous. They presented scores of names we otherwise would've never imagined ourselves. The identity development work was similarly impressive, making it difficult to choose just one logo to refine and ultimately adopt. 
It's worth mentioning that their team was extremely thoughtful and strategic in thinking about the nature of our business, our unique value proposition (and focus on tail spend payments), and how best to distinguish our company in the market.
They were respectful of our expertise and years in the business, but had strong and compelling creative ideas for how to position the business vis-a-vis competitive offerings. I hate to use this language, they really did push the envelope and help us to see thing in new and different ways.

We've not yet announced our new name and identity, but I can attest to the enormous success of this project. We are in love with our new company name and identity and thankful to Catchword for the outstanding work they did to rebrand our company. We're also thrilled that, while it was outside the scope of this project, we landed on a name for our consumer-facing platform, which will receive a separate brand rollout in 2026.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The creative work itself was impressive. Not only were the names they recommended unexpected and highly creative, but they were so clearly developed with our company and business model in mind. Catchword works with many companies, and it'd be easy for them to probably recycle ideas, but the names they came up with and presented were just so uniquely us, so clearly developed based on who we are what they understood about us. 

The design work was similarly thoughtful, intentional, and creative, each concept more impressive than the last. As I mentioned previously, we had a hard time choosing just one logo!

Are there any areas for improvement or something Catchword could have done differently?

They could be cheaper. :-) But, you get what you pay for, and their work is worth the expense.

Scope of Work – Catchword (February 2025)

Catchword was engaged to support the naming of three new solutions for the Connected Services business unit. For each solution, the process included:

1. A materials review and a briefing meeting to define naming parameters
2. A summary document outlining strategic naming directions
3. One round of name development, generating approximately 500 name options

Key Deliverables:

• An Excel spreadsheet listing all proposed names for each solution
• A curated shortlist of recommended names with rationale for each

The first solution name was required by mid-March, so the project was executed with an accelerated timeline.

Completion of Naming Strategy and Creative Development

Catchword successfully delivered:

1. A portfolio naming strategy for Connected Services, including a creative brief and naming

These deliverables were aligned with the original scope and timeline, including the urgent need for the first solution name by mid-March.

Catchword consistently delivered on time and also met requests that we submitted on short notice, adapting to changes we had to make along the way.

They always responded with a positive attitude and showed sensitivity to the changes and range of opinions that came up, understandably so, given that these were three completely new solutions for the organization, within a newly formed business unit.

I don’t think so. They’ve truly been a huge support, and without their help—and their willingness to go above and beyond what was asked, while adapting to changes—we wouldn’t have been able to move the project forward.

They were tasked with delivering a selection of names for consideration that had already been vetted through preliminary screening. Catchword presented two rounds of 50–60 names but developed thousands and screened hundreds prior to meeting with us. The criteria they used to vet the names included Google screening and CatchAll, which involved knocking out obvious conflicts.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

One of the names Catchword pitched ended up becoming the final result. It was on the shortlist presented to senior executives at the beginning (along with 1–2 other options from Catchword and other options from other agencies). We received mostly positive feedback all around. The sound, feel, and look of the name were fresh, modern, and strong.

How did Catchword perform from a project management standpoint?

They were very communicative and collaborative throughout the whole process and met our deadlines. We primarily communicated via email and video conference calls on Microsoft Teams.

What did you find most impressive or unique about them?

The fact that an agency liked theirs even existed was unique in itself. I’ve worked with copywriters and branding agencies before but never in this capacity. Catchword was specialists at it.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could have narrowed down the names presented further or had a firmer POV on which ones were the strongest in order to help our team focus more, but it ultimately worked out.

In the past year alone, we have hired Catchword to create names for two F&B products and to evaluate the US linguistic and cultural appropriateness of names for a number of other projects, including luxury hospitality, F&B, and furnishings. 

The two products were in the pasta and flour space, both to be sold internationally, with a large market in the US. For name creation engagements, the Catchword team develops names based on a brief that we provide. The Catchword names supplement the names that our team creates and provide range and a US perspective to the name candidates we show our international clients. Deliverable: 100-300+ names with rationales.

We frequently turn to Catchword for name evaluations. Catchword assesses the viability, in terms of spelling, pronunciation, cultural associations, and other factors, of 10-25 names that our team has shortlisted for a project. Deliverable: Evaluation of each name, with explanation of any concerns, from 1 or 2 people.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Catchword’s insights are extremely valuable to ensure that our clients’ companies and products make the desired impression on audiences around the world. Over the years, we have avoided potential missteps because of their input. Our team members are fluent in English, but that is not the same as being a native speaker. Plus, it would be impossible to stay informed about all the cultural trends and memes that are relevant for US customers. The US market is critical for many of our clients, and American English has become the lingua franca for the world markets. Having a partner who can add fresh, creative candidates with an American perspective to our name lists and flag possible problems for the US with the names we have developed gives us peace of mind and greater confidence in our recommendations to international clients.

At this point, we’re quite familiar with Catchword’s process, having worked together several times. Generally speaking, their process involves a lot of discovery work, the creation of naming parameters for the project, multiple rounds of name development and review, and various degrees of name screening. In this case, the process was on an accelerated timeline, and so the Catchword team conducted just one round of name development. But they went all out when they presented their recommended names, presenting them in a very impressive graphical context, including name stories and taglines for each of the names. It really helped our shared client to see just how impactful each of the names could and would be.

Both the client and our team were super impressed by Catchword’s name recommendations! The client even had a hard time narrowing down the list for trademark evaluations. And I know that, ultimately, several names cleared the client’s trademark review, providing them with multiple name options to choose from!

GreyBox and Catchword have collaborated on several company brand development projects in the last few years. Our first collaboration, and the primary focus of this review, involved the creation of a brand name and identity for a biotech company focused on cancer detection. Catchword developed the name and GreyBox developed the identity, though we worked hand-in-hand, very collaboratively, throughout the process. It was during this first collaboration that we got to really know each other, discover both a professional and personal synergy, and and establish a foundation for an ongoing agency partnership.

Our combined agencies were responsible for developing a company brand name and visual identity for a shared biotech client. Catchword carried out a full brand naming program, including discovery work, multiple rounds of name development, and trademark vetting of client-preferred names. Our team participated in the naming process, providing input from a design perspective, and reciprocally, Catchword participated in and provided input during the design phase of the process.

Now having completed several collaborations with Catchword, I can really understand why they’re the leader in brand name development. Their process is remarkably well honed and their name ideas really inspired, but more than that, they’re just super smart branding professionals and incredible people who place a real importance on doing amazing work and exceeding client expectations. We absolutely love working with them and we look forward to many more collaborations in the future.

Catchword is an incredibly well-oiled machine. Their team has been through the process of company name development literally hundreds of times, so, project management is, as you would expect, extremely smooth and effective and most of our collaboration took place on Zoom.

We engaged Catchword to develop a brand name for a new pet diagnostic platform. Their team also assisted with trademark evaluations and linguistic research to validate the names they developed. In addition, they generously assisted with some out of scope work including follow-up creative ideations and the creation of category descriptors to contextualize the selected brand name. We sincerely appreciated this additional, unbudgeted work.

Scope of the project included an extensive discovery and briefing phase to set parameters for naming the platform, multiple rounds of name development, multiple presentations of work name candidates, trademark evaluations, and linguistic and cultural research to validate names in international markets. Plus, as I mentioned, some out of scope work such as additional creative name ideations and category descriptor development.
