We contracted with AltexSoft to design a transaction channel for self-service payment terminals, such as gas stations or vending machines.

What were your goals for this project?

We needed to implement flexible server architecture and terminal software with finance and technical monitoring. Further, we had to develop a UI/UX design interface and a Linux operating system that is customizable to different kiosks and integrated with various hardware devices.

AltexSoft understood our needs and took a professional approach to our project. They were comfortable working with modern technologies and Agile software development methods.

Can you go into detail about the services they provided and the scope of the project?

AltexSoft designed UX interfaces and an administrative panel for the kiosks. They created dashboards for payments, management of service providers, and tracking transactions, and they customized a Linux operating system in a terminal with extended security measures. The kiosk application was integrated with the web administration panel and the service providers.

What was the team composition?

The AltexSoft team consisted of a software architect, two full-stack JavaScript engineers, backend and frontend engineers, two quality assurance specialists, two UX specialists, and a project manager.

I am the director of a software development consultancy. We build cloud security technology for our customers.

What challenge were you trying to address with AltexSoft?

We needed some custom development for our consultancy. I couldn’t use standard developers because it was a complex project and we really needed cutting-edge development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

They are doing the bulk of our development for an Azure cloud-based security system. There has been a shift towards the cloud in the industry; however, the security part of computing hasn’t yet really moved over. We felt there was a gap in the market and had ideas about how to move security to the cloud and provide a holistic service. The most important part of the project was getting the architecture right so that it would be scalable and easy to develop.

What is the team composition?

I was regularly in contact with 3 people from their team including the project manager. We also interfaced with a solution architect, business analyst, and UI [user interface] designer quite a lot as well. They interact with our customers as well and really work hard to get to know our business.

How did you come to work with AltexSoft?

We wanted a very specific skillset. We wanted people that were using Azure and the cloud to develop software products. Most development companies are still following the old style of development and even when they use the cloud, they still aren’t using it properly. We looked for people that were forward-thinking and adaptable to change so they could keep on top of all new developments and adapt their processes accordingly. 

After seeing their marketing materials and speaking to their team as well as some references, we felt they were the company we were looking for and someone we could work with. Their understanding of how to architect software and enterprise software was really key.

How much have you invested in them?

We have spent close to $1,000,000 so far and we are about to commit to another million dollars. It is just the beginning, but I believe we will have a long-term relationship.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with them in December 2015 and the relationship is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The software is doing very well and we are receiving really good feedback, but it is in the very early stage for us. We’re a startup and have a couple thousand users on the system, so it’s still very small.

I’m really happy. I have worked with other development companies before and know the struggles of outsourcing development. There are two important aspects that I find quite unique to them and one of those is that they are passionate about doing things properly and allowing the developers to have a free hand to do what they do well, which is quite unique. 

How did AltexSoft perform from a project management standpoint?

They really take pride in what they do; their focus is on creating quality and the money is secondary. The company is very professionally run that has a really healthy management structure. Everyone has their role and knows what they are doing. They have good processes in place and everyone is motivated and committed to creating that atmosphere, which isn’t easy to do. That very positive atmosphere and positive structure means they have happy developers.

They have been brilliant. We have a really good relationship with the project manager, who is really committed, motivated and a nice person to work with. They are very passionate about what they do and they actually treat this as if it is their own product. As a result, they really show a lot of initiative. We interfaced on a daily basis using Jira, Confluence, and many plugins in Jira.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They are really open and willing to learn. They are very passionate about the latest technology and keep up to date while creating excellent products in an amazing way. In the beginning, people tend to promise a lot and when they actually deliver, it’s a lot less than expected. However, their team is very honest and transparent, trying their hardest to comply with the contract. The relationship has stayed healthy throughout the lifecycle of a project, which is not always the case with some companies.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything I would like to change about them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

If you can give them some commitment and space and let them do their job, they will do an amazing job. They really work hard to do it properly. In the beginning, we made a mistake when we tried to tell them what to do. We weren’t giving them the space to flourish and bring new ideas into the project. 

I think it is really important to develop a rapport with the team and engage with them. Put effort into connecting with them, meeting them, and having regular communication. The whole process becomes a lot more personal and it has worked out a lot better that way. The relationship is what it boils down to in the end. People don’t work for money, they work because they enjoy what they do.

I’m the R&D director for Cronus Cyber Technologies, an Israeli start-up that helps companies improve their internal cyber security. Our product is installed in a company’s network, and we also do penetration tests and network scanning to find vulnerabilities and present reports.

What challenge were you trying to address with AltexSoft?

Our QA team does a lot of manual tests, and they weren’t big enough to manage it all. Testing needed to be done from version to version, and there wasn’t any time left to invest in automation, so we were looking to outsource.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Our company develops three products that are web apps that all run inside the browser. One of them is for controlling our product inside the company’s network, the second is enterprise-level and aggregates from a few machines that scan several networks, and the third is on the multi-enterprise level and aggregates data for all of them. We needed to be able to run some sanity on all three products, and AltexSoft developed common framework and wrote automation tests divided by these three products. It’s written with Node.js as well as WebdriverIO. AltexSoft did an integration with our Jenkins so that we can run the test overnight and see the results, and they installed a plugin into Jenkins to see the report as well as screenshots of the things that fail.

How did you come to work with AltexSoft?

I was considering 5–6 companies, some of which I knew from friends and previous workplaces. Our main priorities were an affordable price and a well-qualified team that was easy to work with. One company proposed a lot of candidates, but it wasn’t a good match for what we wanted.

We spend around $7,500 per month.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with them in June of this year, and it’s currently an ongoing relationship.

I have a Skype meeting every other month with their sales team and a manager to discuss our progress. AltexSoft is responsive and quick, and they always know what the priorities are.

We use Trello to follow the tasks they’re working on.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Whenever we need to talk, it’s always right to the point. They used their time wisely, so we have minimum conversations with maximum impact.

I’m the director of development for a company that creates and delivers health care tools for the healthcare industry. We use web, print, and other media to help our customer become more informed and make the appropriate decisions in the healthcare space.

Our company was looking to provide our OASIS users in the field an easy-to-use referential app that will allow them to fill out their documentation properly.

AltexSoft provided backend development for an iOS app. The project encapsulated everything you would expect from your traditional systems development life cycle.

After we agreed to the contract, we had weekly meetings to ensure progress on three particular milestones to get the project launched. In the span of about five months, the project underwent requirements gathering, high fidelity wireframing, development, and delivery.

What was the team composition?

There was a project manager, a tester, and a couple of backend developers on the AltexSoft side. We also used a tester and a developer on our side.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The app received very good praise in customer demos. It went to market a couple of months ago and we have some users on the platform now. Internally, we feel that this app will bring in the monetary assessment provided by the product team over the course of the next year. Also, each milestone was met within the given time frame.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Our teams worked very effectively together. Weekly status calls and communication via Slack was critical to the success of the project. Keeping these open lines of communication allowed us to address problems quickly, and in turn, AltexSoft was able to resolve those issues in a timely manner.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The most impressive behavior they exhibited was how much they cared about the success of the project. Not only did they take direction from our team extremely well but they also provided other avenues to ensure the successful launch of the app. They didn’t feel like an external vendor, but rather part of the team.

Nothing I can think of at the moment.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I am the Vice President of Elevator Agency. We do custom web development and marketing, and build custom applications for companies to solve business problems.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with AltexSoft.

We had a customer that needed a solution that would allow them to run their entire screen printing production service. They're a printing broker and needed custom software that would allow them to interact with their customers and all of the printers across the U.S., as well as maintain inventory accounts for different vendors and suppliers. We didn't have all of the in-house talent to complete the project and were looking to augment our internal development team, but it has turned into a completely outsourced situation.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They ran the project on Scrum, in an agile environment. We were working in sprints and we provided to them an original interactive wireframe that they started on. They expanded and brought on a UX expert as the scope of the project increased, which in this case was a good thing because it ended up being a fully-fledged product that they can go to market with.

The platform they developed is primarily for the web, but it does work on mobile. It’s meant as a desktop software as a service essentially. There are many functionalities of the software. It provides project management, along with a type of communication that allows people to tag other people in the software or comments, and to email them. It takes orders from the customer and moves the information around the team from the customer service representative to the designers, printers, and eventually, it has integrations with the UPS and USPS where they can provide tracking numbers and actually ship the products. It has integrations with Zoho CRM to push new orders into the sales team's pipelines. It has integrations with Pressbooks for an accounting module, and with the software Xero. There’s a reporting module, and it also has integrations with Paypal so that customers can make payments straight through the system. There are a lot of high-level pieces that go into it.

What is the team dynamic?

They provided us with a dedicated team, which included a project manager, several developers, a business analyst, and someone for QA.

How did you come to work with AltexSoft?

Originally, there was a local rep in San Diego who was working as a salesperson for AltexSoft. He brought them to the table several years ago for a Wordpress build we needed, and that was just overflow work. The remainder of the season, we had extra work and their team helped us out. Fast forward 8–12 months, and I reached out when I needed someone to help us with the heavy lifting and I knew they could do it. I’d already worked with them before and decided to bring them on again.

How much have you invested with them?

Probably around $350,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in October 2016, and the engagement is ongoing through the end of the year. It may then continue on after that.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The product hasn’t launched yet, but they’ve done a good job of staying on time and in the budget. The customer has requested a lot more than the original scope so the budget’s increased, but they’ve been able to stay within it as more features are added. Their turn-around rate is quick, much quicker than I would expect for a project of this nature.

How did AltexSoft perform from a project management standpoint?

We have a morning meeting through Google Hangouts and throughout the day we communicate through Slack. There is a project management software as well, and there are updates that come through that but it’s not our primary means of communication.

Our project manager has been awesome in communicating any challenges in the process, early on and often so that we can work through those quickly. He also communicates directly with my client as well. They’re based in the Ukraine, so I had some concerns about a language barrier, but it hasn’t been a problem.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their level of communication has been superior and their attention to detail has been much better than I have experienced with any other outsourced providers. I'm a big fan. I can't say enough good stuff about these guys. They've really done a good job with a really tough project.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

That I wish we would have brought them on earlier during the scoping process with the client. They have a lot of experience in these types of projects, and I think they could have been valuable in helping to shortcut the path to where we ended up.

I am the senior vice president of product innovation at a travel technology solutions provider. My primary focus is developing, creating, and delivering new products and services that enhance the means by which our clients acquire and process travel and related data.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with AltexSoft?

Our biggest challenge was delivering a mobile application, particularly because we were not successful with the initial third party that we had hired to do the development. By the time that we engaged AltexSoft, we had to be strict about needing them to complete work on the planned mobile app and web portal in a short time frame and on a tight budget. Fortunately, they were able to deliver three products – the aforementioned two and an added-on third – in four months, ahead of schedule and under budget. The third product that they provided for us was a platform that was scalable to anywhere between small-sized clients to full-size travel entities.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Overall, the goal was to create a travel itinerary and flight disruption services application available both on a computer browser as well as in a mobile app for iOS. It was important that the users would be able to receive notifications about delays and changes (particularly in regards to air travel) that would affect itineraries quickly, to help their clients’ experiences be as smooth as possible. Allowing travel agents to communicate with their clients through the apps to streamline the process was key.

AltexSoft did everything from building the UI/UX design, to utilizing React and Javascript, to using their intricate knowledge and understanding of Amazon Web Services’ platform. Although they initially tried to incorporate some of the previous, failed application’s features, by the time they were finished with development, they had eliminated everything from the prior attempt and vastly improved upon it.

Additionally, they helped us to reformulate the whole process by which we built and generated requirements for beginning development on new projects in the future. This procedure has become standard for acquiring approval from our sales, billing, and marketing departments, as well as anyone else who would be involved in a new product, and has fundamentally helped us improved our workflow.

There were about eight people involved, which included everyone from development, to project management, to business development management. AltexSoft has a comprehensive approach that ensures its clients’ questions can always be answered by one of its team members.

During the process of finding a services provider, I found development work done by AltexSoft for a different company. After conducting more research about them specifically, I placed a phone call, and within two weeks we began work.

The project work took place between February and June of 2016.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Their work has allowed us to transform our whole process internally, from both a client and a sales perspective, and has enabled us to go from ground zero to having a minimum viable product within only twelve months, which was previously unthinkable. Additionally, these products have opened up new client opportunities for us.

How did AltexSoft perform from a project management standpoint?

AltexSoft’s greatest strength, other than their technical expertise, is their outstanding approach to project management. One of the most important initial steps in our partnership involved bringing the development team and an AltexSoft executive over from Ukraine. This ensured that their team understood our perspective and gave us a chance to learn about their process before the project work technically began. Although there was a language concern because we do not speak Ukrainian, they spoke flawless English, which made interacting across continents as straightforward as possible.

Because they were in constant communication with us on a regular basis, nothing fell through the cracks. Often, they would respond to our queries and messages within only a few minutes, even when it must have been past midnight in Kharkiv.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their UI/UX design was phenomenal and will keep us returning to them whenever we need further development work. In fact, even though we have completed that primary assignment, we periodically consult with them on UI/UX, wireframing, and design services for small, internal projects. AltexSoft had a practical knowledge of our business needs and delivered what we wanted, and that product has been successful since they developed it and continue to enhance it alongside our team.

Are there any areas they could improve?

During the project, their team did not explain certain development approaches in advance to allow us to be better informed about their process from the ground up. This was not detrimental to the overall success of the project, but it would have been beneficial to our general comprehension of their workflow.

Also, when we do return to them for occasional consulting, there is no guarantee that we will be assigned to the team with whom we worked for the app and portal development. Although we understand that those individuals are valued for their skills and in high demand, it is occasionally frustrating to have to explain our entire business model and the context of our work to new people for brief projects.

We are a pawnshop selling our merchandise through a brick-and-mortar store and also online. We’re still a relatively small company, with around 30 employees.

I am the IT director.

What business challenge were you trying to address with AltexSoft?

We contracted AltexSoft in order to write our pawnshop software so that we could manage our merchandise.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement.

AltexSoft helped us with our e-commerce initiative for selling items in the pawnshop and tracking when customers default. AltexSoft helped us build our website as well. AltexSoft also helps us with our mobile efforts. They’re primarily a Microsoft technology shop.

Over time, we’ve worked with two designers, two quality assurance people, eight developers and some project management help from AltexSoft. In total, around ten to twelve people from AltexSoft have been working for us, with occasional variations.

I handle most of the management effort myself. AltexSoft initially recommended assigning us a project manager and having me interface with that person, but I didn’t want to do that. I like to have a hands-on approach and manage my teams directly, so I haven’t found much use for a middle person. Management does help alleviate the time zone difference, but AltexSoft has been accommodating by working on US time, which has turned out pretty well.

We’ve had a good relationship. AltexSoft makes an effort to fly out periodically to visit us, and they maintain a solid leadership and engineering team.

How did you come to work with AltexSoft?

I was looking for developers in Russia and Ukraine. I found AltexSoft, interviewed one of their developers and saw that they knew their stuff. We negotiated a reasonable rate and moved forward. AltexSoft was a small company back then, with only twenty or thirty people. Now, they have hundreds. We’ve grown together as companies.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The average yearly cost for AltexSoft’s services has been around $500,000.

What is the timeframe of this engagement?

We started working with AltexSoft four years ago.

Could you share any statistics, metrics or other feedback from this engagement?

AltexSoft has almost always met my schedule. How a team is managed will directly reflect in their productivity. AltexSoft has always been reasonable in making sure they deliver quality outputs. We haven’t had many problems in that sense. There have been two individuals on our team who didn’t work out but, for the most part, everything has been pretty good.

Up until last year, we were working with all of the original developers from AltexSoft. Only one of the four-person core team left the company. We have a strong relationship with them; AltexSoft believes in making everyone happy.

The Ukrainian developer market is very competitive, and there are a lot of different tech companies that a programmer can choose from. We’ve managed to focus on keeping the right resources for the job and providing them tasks they want to work on. AltexSoft’s leadership has helped in making sure that we were paying the right salary rates. Keeping the core people around makes life easier for everyone, and AltexSoft knows this.

We provide the best point-of-sale solution in the market and most of our customers would agree. We recently acquired a competitor, so we’re growing quite rapidly. In terms of development, we’re working at full capacity. Our growth rate is where we want it to be. 

How did AltexSoft perform from a project management standpoint?

We use the Team Foundation Server in order to communicate during project development, and we also use spreadsheets. I don’t use any other high-end tools. We have daily calls with the different teams from AltexSoft, making sure that we’re on the same page. Specs are drafted using Microsoft Word, so that’s nothing special.

What distinguishes AltexSoft from other providers?

I can call AltexSoft’s CEO at any time. Even though they’re no longer a small company, AltexSoft still has a small company mindset. This is a great thing and it was a significant consideration when choosing a developer. We wanted to know that their focus would be on catering to the customer. We’ve always felt that we were a special client for AltexSoft, even though that isn’t true. They have hundreds of clients. From the management team down, AltexSoft listens to us. They do their best in order to ensure that we have a good relationship. They also know their technology. AltexSoft offers us much better talent than would be found in the US, at a much better price.

Is there anything AltexSoft could have improved or done differently?

The language barrier has always been a bit of a problem. Not everyone from AltexSoft speaks fluent English, but this has gotten better over time. Also, certain engineers could become better at specific skills, but this can also be improved.

Any clients looking to hire AltexSoft should carefully specify what it is they want done and embrace the work process. Since the development team cannot be in the same room as the client, they need to make sure that they have daily meetings and that they clearly explain what it is that needs to be done and keep an open line of communication. We employ an agile methodology with AltexSoft, which I also recommend.

We keep build servers in the U.S. and give AltexSoft access to them. If AltexSoft were to disappear one day, we’d still have access to our code. Two and a half years ago, we were a little nervous because of the political situation in Ukraine. AltexSoft went out of their way to relocate their engineers to the western side of their country. Everything turned out fine, and we managed to work through this concern with them.

As a company, we believe in virtual teams: the work can be done even without all workers being located in the same place. Our team in Las Vegas has less than 10 people. The rest of our employees are scattered throughout the US. I live in South Dakota, our director of technology is based in Reno, while the director of operations is in Chicago. We try to find the best people and make the relationship work, wherever they might be.

For software development, we employed the same philosophy: we don’t have to have development teams in the same room in order to make the collaboration work. We only have to build trust, which is the hard part. One of the reasons we’ve been successful is the fact that we established relationships and got to know each person before starting to work with them. Once that was established, we didn’t care where they lived. System administrators of course need to be in the same place as the servers, but the rest of our team has grown independently of each other. We have allowed people to work without commuting to an office every day, which has made them more efficient.

I believe we found AltexSoft initially on Elance. It's been four years, but I believe we were attracted to them because of their reviews. Generally, what matters to me is the quality of the reviews, the number of reviews, and what people specifically are saying in the reviews.

Across three projects in the last three years, we spent no more than $3,000. 

When was the work completed?

It's on an as-needed basis. If anything were to arise in the future, AltexSoft would be whom we would approach first.

Do you have any statistics or metrics on the project?

We don't really have metrics. AltexSoft's work with us is more maintenance based. The real KPI [key [performance indicators] is that everything works.

Is there anything unique or special about AltexSoft that really makes them stand out?

AltexSoft is really responsive. If you send a new project to them within 48 hours, you have some sort of response. Other contractors tend to lag. Once we engage a project, they're pretty transparent in terms of updates and challenges they are having. They provide that feedback up front while the project is going on.

Please describe your organization. What is your role and responsibilities?

I am the founder of an Internet radio station that I started in 2008.

What was your goal for working with AltexSoft?

I wanted an app that would allow my listeners to interact with the radio station easily. 

Please describe the scope of their work.

AltexSoft has developed two apps for me, but it's essentially the same app – one for iPhone and one for Android. There are a few user interface and user experience differences between the two apps.

What was your process for selecting AltexSoft with which to work?

I did some research on the Internet and found AltexSoft. They were one of the first companies that I contacted, and I liked everything I heard from them. For me, cost was a large factor. I found that the Ukraine had better prices for similar development than the U.S. or other parts of Europe. 

Can you give a sense of the size of the initiative in dollar terms or a personnel work-hour figure?

The development of both versions of my app cost less than $10,000.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Is there anything unique or special about AltexSoft that really makes them stand out compared to other business partners?

Most importantly, as outsourced partner there was no language barrier. They're very responsive. Their engineers are serious. There's very little humor in what they do. They give you exactly what you ask for.

What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?

The first thing is that you're comfortable with outsourcing. If you've outsourced before, you know that you're either going to get high-quality work or you're not. After a reaching a few milestones on time I knew AltexSoft was going to be a great partner. They did exactly what I'd hoped for. The results they showed me were impressive. Even prior to hitting the milestones, their ability to understand what I was describing for a custom application was great. As a future client, it is important to give them the schedule of when you expect to be updated, especially due to the time difference.
