I’m the former director of marketing at a technology companny.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

My former company's business model is growth by acquisition. In a period of about three and a half years, we had done 36 product acquisitions. As this happened, we were shutting the websites of those companies down and trying to bring them into our fold.

The challenge was trying to do so cohesively and having one brand for those different products. We needed a website that was one big site with multiple mini-sites under it, all with the same look and feel. 

Our old website, which was connected to HubSpot, had become quite a mess. So, we were looking to have a whole new structure for our website that would recommend other products related to what users were currently looking at.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, we sat down with WDG to explain our issues. The team then put together ideas and drafts of what they thought would be the best structure for us and making suggestions. They structured the website so that it was user-friendly.

The team built the website in WordPress, working on it from start to finish, including strategy, wireframes, development, and design. After the bulk of the project was done, they did some post-work for us.

There was one person on our team who had worked with WDG before. At the time, they had said they weren’t able to do the work because they had a lot going on. Nevertheless, they gave us a bid that we could compare with bids from other companies. Theirs just blew us out of the water, and we knew we needed them on board.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with WDG from October 2018–May 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Our site visits and retention were up by 75% because the site was so easy to navigate. It was great to be able to see the customer journey through HubSpot. We saw a lot of repeat visits. WDG also made it very easy for us to upload our content onto the website without their help.

The whole website was incredibly usable. The experience for any visitor is great. I didn’t think that through as much, so it was a fantastic bonus to have.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great. Our team wasn’t very organized, but WDG was great at keeping us on task. In the beginning, we met weekly. As we were getting closer to the final deadline, we started meeting twice a week. They were fantastic as far as being available all the time.

When we had issues or questions, they were accessible. We communicated via phone and email.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Visually, their work was beautiful. Because this was my first time building a website from scratch, I undervalued and underappreciated what WDG was able to do, until they did it. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only thing, which was probably more on our end, was setting expectations. Some things could’ve been spelled out a little better. For example, my boss didn’t know that WDG wasn’t going to put all of the content onto the website and that we had to do it ourselves.

A week before the project ended, when they handed over the structure, she was very surprised. It wasn’t communicated to her clearly. To me, it was assumed, but it wasn’t the same for everyone. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

We had no idea what we were looking for, but the team was able to put it all together. However, you will save a lot of time if you know exactly what you want going in. Then, WDG will be able to tweak those ideas and improve them.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

We hired them to help update our website and to refresh our brand.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Everything from the branding to the website was all of them. We have an engineering team, and we needed a company that would integrate with that team while bringing in new expertise. We also needed to own our code and have the ability to make updates after the engagement was over.

They did a lot of research on their own and checked out our competitors and our industry. They did a lot more design than we anticipated. They helped with a lot of different things for both the brand refresh and the website.

What is the team composition?

From their president, there were at least four people, and there were some other members working under them.

How did you come to work with WDG - Web Development Group?

We found them through word of mouth. We were working with a marketing consultant who knew of them. We looked at several companies, but chose WDG – Web Development Group because they could address both of our needs. We checked some of their references, and we knew they did some political work so we knew they understood our industry.

We spent approximately $80,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project lasted from January—September 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

 I would encourage people to visit our website to see for themselves. We were really impressed with how they were able to incorporate graphics and our own ideas into a design that we mutually agreed upon. Their design set them apart, and it really reaffirmed our decision after working with them. We were wowed.

Our team has a lot of opinions, and pleasing them is very hard, but in the end, everyone was pleased with the design and everything that WDG – Web Development Group built for us.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They excelled at project management. They always met the deadlines that they initially set. The times when we changed the timeline, it was mostly because of our team. They kept us on track. They were great. They took us through a whole process that was very helpful.

The team and their personalities meshed really well with our team. They became a part of our team. Each time we sat down with them, they were instrumental in helping us navigate the project, which saved us a lot of time. We didn’t have to educate them on what we do.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re up to date on the latest technologies. We’ve gotten great feedback from our clients. They think it looks fantastic. Now, our internal team can easily make changes to keep us up to speed as well. Truly, the end product and how it’s tight, crisp, and well-designed, was what impressed us most.

Are there any areas they could improve?

From our perspective, we hit a home run, so there’s nothing we would change. They exceeded our expectations.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Spend the time upfront defining the project. Once we brought them in for the proposal phase, and let them ask us questions, that’s when we truly felt like they understood what we wanted. They took the time to understand what we needed from this project.

We’re The Institute of World Politics—we’re an accredited graduate school. We offer five master's degree programs and one Ph.D. program in international relations areas. I was brought on to develop the cyber intelligence program and help them achieve online or distance learning.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

We needed to update the website and redo the branding.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They built a whole new infrastructure, although a lot of our content was moved onto this new platform. They completely redid the system in WordPress, and they put links and processes in place to make sure the site worked. They also helped with data migration.

Next, we want to automate student registration. They need to integrate our registration system and our accounting system as well.

What is the team composition?

The Partnership Director was involved in the sales process, and he was available when we needed. Most of the time, though, we worked with a project manager.

How did you come to work with WDG - Web Development Group?

Initially, we talked to several different companies who quoted the project at about $250,000. Being a small nonprofit, we didn’t have that kind of money. It was paused, but eventually, I received the funding and we began looking again. We settled on WDG – Web Development Group because I sat down with one of their team members and talked about how we wanted to continue our relationship once the sale was done.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about $140,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We initially began in March 2018 and It ended in August 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Everybody is a lot happier with the look and feel of the new website. It’s significantly better than it was before. The board of trustees and the board of directors are really happy with the work that was done and the results. Alumni have also said that it’s easier to navigate. Although, I’ve heard from some people that it’s difficult to find a specific piece of data, so they have to use the search bar. Although, our branding person is the one who set it up like that.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

I thought they were great. They facilitated the data migration well. They were very responsive. They laid out a schedule. We had weekly meetings and they would tell us where they were in their schedule, but  we would also provide a list of what we needed that week on top of that. Each week, they would adjust plans. There was plenty of communication between meetings too.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They did anything we asked from them. They’re masters in their field.

Are there any areas they could improve?

When we got to the end of the project, they have a set of rules that they won’t do anything unless they’re under contract. To me, that was the exact opposite of what our sales rep said, because we wanted to maintain the relationship. I even offered to pay an hourly rate, but their policy wouldn’t allow it. Other than that, their performance was outstanding.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Listen to what they say, compare it to what you hear from others, and I’m sure they’ll stand out just like they did for us.

I’m the CIO of The Phillips Collection. We’re an art museum that’s been around for about 100 years. We compete with museums all around the world but especially in Washington, D.C.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

We brought WDG on board to make our website responsive. We rebuilt our website a number of years earlier, which included mobile capabilities. But ultimately, people were looking at the website and needed it to be responsive.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

WDG made our website responsive on any mobile device. Their team made the changes in Drupal.

We later asked them to bid on another project. Currently, WDG’s redoing our website.

What is the team composition?

WDG assigned a project manager who was our main point of contact. However, I dealt with a handful of people.

How did you come to work with WDG–Web Development Group?

I met the president of WDG years ago and was impressed with him as an individual. When we rebuilt our website several years ago, they bid on it but weren’t selected. Their team then bid on our mobile responsiveness project. They competed against seven other agencies but were the only team that worked with WordPress and Drupal. Our blog was done in WordPress and our website was done in Drupal, so we liked their flexibility.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started the mobile optimization project in October 2016 and finished it in January 2017. They're currently working on our website.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We stopped getting complaints about the fact that our website wasn’t responsive. Ultimately, we were happy with the website. We were happy enough that WDG won our current project, so that speaks for itself.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

We had regular meetings and the process was documented, so there was a trail for all of the tasks. I felt that I could reach out and talk to anyone on their team. They were clear, which was important. With the current project, their team uses Confluence because it’s a bigger initiative.

What did you find most impressive about them?

WDG offers us a new way to think about projects. We’re a nonprofit, which can operate with blinders. We get the work done but aren’t hugely strategic. They’re a strategic partner that gives us ideas to raise us to a higher level. WDG brings all of their experiences and expertise to the table. Their team elevates our conversations to develop a project with a strategy in mind.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I haven’t had a negative experience yet.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Nonprofits tend to start engagements with a plan but want to expand the scope later in the engagement. WDG keeps us on track with the scope of the project. If I bring up an idea, I know that it’s out of our current scope. However, it helps them to know what’s coming next. WDG is clear about the scope and understands it, which shows that they’re an experienced business partner.

We are a national nonprofit that serves communities during disasters. We’re also the nation’s largest collector of blood for hospitals. I’m the director of digital engagement for volunteers, so I handle the customer-facing user experiences for volunteers, all the way from the discovery application to ongoing engagement.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

We brought them in to help redesign our volunteer application form. We had a very low conversion rate and realized that the application was time-consuming and complicated; it took anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to complete, and it wasn’t mobile-responsive.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We worked with WDG to determine what the new application would look like, how it would function, and what key information it would collect from applicants. We went through some collaborative design iterations and then handed the design over to get built. 

What is the team composition?

We have a main project manager, and we also work with a small but mighty team of a lead designer, a lead strategist, and a lead developer. 

How did you come to work with WDG - Web Development Group?

A colleague referred them, so we wanted to make sure they were part of the RFP process. They were far and beyond the best response that we got.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent about $200,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

Our work together began in June 2017, and it’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

On the first day, we saw people completing the application in 8–11 minutes. WDG’s work greatly reduced the time it takes for people to complete the application, which has ultimately increased our conversion rate.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve done really well. We have great communication through email and their Confluence project management system. At the minimum, we have weekly meetings.

What did you find most impressive about them?

WDG really takes the time to understand the customer. They became almost subject matter experts on the people we’re trying to reach and communicate with. They also brought a lot of innovative and creative ideas to the table that we may not have thought of on our own. They almost seem like a part of my internal team, rather than an external third-party vendor. They really work well with us, and they’re an extension of how I do business.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No.

Any advice for potential customers?

I’d say to trust the relationship; they know what they’re doing, and they bring good and sincere ideas to the table. They really have your success in mind when they’re working with you.

We’re a financial services consulting firm that’s focused on consumer & regulatory compliance, risk, and global financial crimes compliance both in the US and abroad. I’m the director of marketing and communications.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

They handled our website rebrand and relaunch.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We hired them to handle a full rebrand and relaunch for our website. It was important that our brand looked more modern and professional. We’ve had the same look since we launched our company in 2005. When they started, they interviewed employees and key stakeholders to gain insight into what is most important from their perspective. They also held a workshop with us to get us thinking about our brand and identity. From there, they created a whole new look and feel for our website and all materials. We selected various bits and pieces of what they completed to create our final brand.  

We wrote our own content for the site. However, they used that information to pluck keywords that would boost our position in SEO rankings.

What is the team composition?

I worked with a number of people on their end. Alec (Head of Project Management) was our project manager. Their development team, designers, and strategists also collaborated with us. 

How did you come to work with WDG - Web Development Group?

We considered a few companies, but they were a partner for our company’s intranet a few years ago. In that engagement, they did research on our needs, and we had a positive relationship. We appreciated their honesty and willingness to point us toward a solution that was right for our operations and budget. Because we built that trust in the past, they were top of mind during interviews for this work. After impressing us with their pitch, timeline, and price point, we decided to hire them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with them from June–November 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I don’t have any quantitative results right now, but we have seen an uptick of inbound inquiries to our site as well as increased positive feedback on our site’s look and feel. The new platform looks more professional and mobile-friendly than what we had in the past. Our staff is proud to send customers to the site now. 

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They were great to work with. We had a very hard deadline, and our teams met three times each week to ensure that we could hit that timeline. It was important to talk through scheduling and hold-ups as they arose. We launched according to the schedule, and any delays were on our end. We’re not their only client, but they made it seem that way.  

What did you find most impressive about them?

They did a lot of research on our company before starting their work with us. We felt that they really understood our mission and goals from the beginning. There was a level of trust and comfort while working with them that I haven’t experienced with other providers. They still reach out to us post-launch to make sure everything is functioning properly. I would recommend them in a heartbeat because they did a great job. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Designate one or two people to spearhead the project, making sure they’re available for regular phone calls with their team. That will help make them a part of your operations. Being willing to work with them while bringing as much relevant information to the table as possible will help that achieve success with you.

For a number of different clients, we brought WDG on board to help build out their websites.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

WDG built websites for our clients, developing overall content, website and information architectures, UX designs, and brand integrations. During our engagements, their team followed several different steps. They first came in to understand our clients’ needs. Their team spent time during the discovery sessions to immerse themselves in how to express our clients’ brands online. Then, they took our clients through the design processes, which were iterative. Their team learned how to take brand assets and put them online. They also learned about our clients' objects for a website. For example, their team understood how to build a content website and a lead generation platform. They understood the dynamics of the different functions to help build a website to accomplish those goals. Then, there was the development process. Their team coded the websites and ensured that the designs were expressed online.

Their client-facing team included 7–8 people but more people worked on our projects in the background.

I originally worked with them on a project for a nonprofit organization. Their team did great work, so I’ve brought them onto other projects for their help.

Our relationship started around 2012. We work together on and off as projects come up.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

In one project, the goal was revenue generation and our client saw an increase in their overall revenue. The website was fairly successful. When their team created content sites, we saw positive results too.

How did WDG – Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve been in challenging situations such as changes in leadership in the middle of projects. Overall, their communication style is at the right level based on the client. Their project management is appropriate based on our clients’ needs.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have smart developers who have done work across a number of different industries. WDG brings different best practices across a number of different industries and applies them appropriately, which is valuable. Their blend of for-profit and nonprofit serves them well.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It wouldn’t be anything that I would use to not refer them. If there is any criticism, it’s working with the client in a way to assess the risk based on their unique situation.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

When hiring an agency, be clear about what you want to accomplish. Make sure to give any firm clear direction in what you’d like them to accomplish. Keep your objectives in mind and be thoughtful in your feedback.

I'm the director of marketing at Contegix. We're a managed service provider. We have clients nationwide, but our two headquarters are in St. Louis, Missouri and Reston, Virginia.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG - Web Development Group?

We needed a development and design partner to help us build a new website.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They started the project with a coverage and strategy meeting, which led into an in-depth exploration into what our brand meant to us. They tried to uncover our vision for the site, including the types of features that we wanted. From there, we started with some of the designs, and they were able to hone in on the specific elements we were looking for, like color schemes and image displays.

They were able to get a precise understanding of what we were looking for in terms of the design. We did a lot of testing to solidify that. We were almost halfway into the engagement when we started the development work. It’s a Drupal 8 website, and WDG was able to do all of the coding for the backend of the site. They also created some custom themes for us.

What is the team composition?

Josh (Project Manager, WDG - Web Development Group) was our main point of contact. He oversaw the whole project and was our go-to person for any questions or concerns. We also worked with two Drupal developers, Rob (Senior Developer, WDG - Web Development Group) and Amanda (Senior Frontend Developer, WDG - Web Development Group).

How did you come to work with WDG - Web Development Group?

Many of our customers use Drupal, and we're very familiar with it. We knew that we wanted to go with a Drupal website, so we needed a company that knew Drupal well. We’ve known WDG since 2012 and have done plenty of work with them. We’ve even shared mutual clients. They've referred work to us, and we've referred work to them, so they're a very familiar partner.

We reached out to some of our other Drupal partners to get a variety of proposals and to see what else was out there. We had a stronger relationship with WDG, and there was a solid sense of trust, so they were a clear favorite.

We looked at some of WDG’s other work and saw that they had developed sites for others that had features that we wanted. They seemed to have an excellent idea of our vision for the project, and we thought that they would take the best approach to building our site. We started negotiating a proposal with them in November of last year and finalized our agreement in December.

We’ve spent somewhere between $70,000–$100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We kicked off the project in January 2019. We had some delays due to internal restructuring and didn’t launch the site until June of that year.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

I don't have any direct or exact statistics, but the response that we've gotten from just announcing our website has been phenomenal. There’s been a decent amount of recognition and promotion for the site, and we've received plenty of feedback saying how great the website is. We've heard from users that they like how it’s organized and that it more precisely defines what we do. The site is very much in line with what we're trying to build and how we're trying to market ourselves to our audience.

Before this project, we had a clumsy website that didn't focus on our core audience. WDG helped us streamline our vision and identify what we wanted. Our products and solutions are now easy to read and understand. WDG also implemented a nice user flow that goes from the initial design all the way to methods for contacting us. In doing so, they’ve helped us increase our digital footprint.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They were fantastic. The communication was great throughout the whole process. We were communicating with WDG weekly, if not more often. We used email and Jira, and they kept us up to date on what they needed so that they could deliver on our requirements. We had weekly updates and check-ins, and the team kept us in-sync with every little detail. We really appreciated that level of support.

Josh was extremely helpful in keeping everybody on time to stay in line with the schedule. He did this for both sides, helping my team as well as his. He also had an excellent understanding of what the deliverables were for both parties.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I really liked their friendliness. I know that's a very loose response, but I liked how easy they were to talk to about such a big project. They’re also organized, responsive, and flexible. This site is our company's footprint online, and they were willing to dive deep into even the smallest of details. They also took the time to listen to us and consider our feedback.

They were everything you could want from a partner, and we truly felt like they were a part of our team. I felt comfortable calling them about any issue, and they were always able to help or at least give us direction. I really felt a sense of trust while working with them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only thing I would’ve asked for—and I think I've shared this with them before—is more of an outline of different options for the project. It was just me and a couple of others working on the project, and I ended up forgetting a lot of things because I was overwhelmed.

Whenever I asked about different options, they always agreed that they should’ve given them at the beginning. This isn’t necessarily an improvement on their end, because they do offer different options, I just didn’t ask for them upfront.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Trust them. They'll be able to deliver your vision if you give them the right scope. Be open, be honest, and tell them where you struggle and where you succeed. Let them take that, process it, and build on it. They’re really good listeners, so if you're open and honest with them at the outset, they'll deliver what you’re looking for.

I was the CIO at a management consulting firm that provides compliance and regulatory consulting to the financial services industry.

What challenge were you trying to address with WDG – Web Development Group?

We needed help developing a strategy around corporate intranet.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

WDG – Web Development Group did two projects with us. First, they created an intranet strategy. They took us through a multi-step process to effectively identify what our needs were and what our strategy should be. After determining which target solutions would be a good fit for our needs, the team helped us choose an off-the-shelf platform.

For the second project, WDG – Web Development Group built a new corporate website for us.

What is the team composition?

A strategy person handled 90% of the project. We also worked with a project manager.

How did you come to work with WDG – Web Development Group?

Someone in our marketing department received a referral from another customer for WDG – Web Development Group. For the intranet work, we issued an RFI and had four vendors come in and give presentations. Based on the content of WDG – Web Development Group’s presentation and their costs, we selected them.

How much have you invested with them?

The first project cost $30,000, and the second was around $180,000–$190,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began the first project in late 2016, then started the second one about a year-and-a-half later.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They had our best interests in mind. Even though they have a robust development team that can build custom sites, they recommended an off-the-shelf platform, which saved us $50,000–$100,000. This wasn’t necessarily in their best interest, so I give them all the credit in the world.

We developed our intranet using the strategy they created for us. We went from having no internal communication platform to having a platform that was widely adopted by the employee base. It became the primary vehicle for communicating company news to the organization.

How did WDG – Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They did great in this regard. WDG – Web Development Group delivered the project on time and on budget. My team always knew what was going on.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Everyone at WDG – Web Development Group was smart and knew their stuff. They were trustworthy business people. I don’t doubt that they have their clients’ best interests at heart.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t have a method for improvement; I just hope they can figure out how to scale their model and continue to achieve the same results. Ab (Co-Founder, WDG – Web Development Group) is smart, so I’m sure they’ll figure it out.

Just play it straight, and they’ll do the same with you.

I worked with them to redevelop a website and refresh a brand for a client of mine.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We developed the website, and refreshed the logo, brand tone, and voice. When I met them, we wanted a long-term partnership. We kicked off the process through a series of team building exercises and listening sessions. I'm so impressed by how well they listen to their clients and find out what their needs are. They were very thoughtful in their approach.

After the initial sessions, they went into full design and wireframing for the website. That process took about six weeks to get through all the elements of each phase. Then, we reviewed various milestones while we worked on the new aspects of the brand. We looked over refreshed versions of the logo, brand tone, and voice, and they delivered the final design comps for the website.

What is the team composition?

We worked with a team of at least five. We had a creative and sales lead, a project manager, a lead creative designer, a wireframing specialist, and a few other team members.

How did you come to work with WDG - Web Development Group?

I wasn't a fan of the traditional RFP process. I got recommendations from colleagues for firms that could do both web and brand development. I analyzed about ten companies, and I reached out and interviewed about five of those. We had an in-depth interview process with our executives to examine their skills and their ability to partner with us. Through that process, we narrowed it down to two firms, and WDG came out ahead because they asked the right questions. They understood the project, and they were thoughtful listeners. Hiring them felt very comfortable.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together sometime around March 2019 and just wrapped up in June 2019.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We're currently building the website internally. Once that rolls out in August, all the design elements will come together. As yet, we haven't launched. Typically, they'd build the website, but we had an internal team to complete the development process. We're really excited about the new brand. It's fresh, modern, simple, and sophisticated.

How did WDG - Web Development Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They were really excellent; I would hire them again in a second. We communicated weekly, and we used Confluence and InVision to manage the work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They were so thoughtful, and they really listened. They applied equally thoughtful strategies to the project once they understood the client and what we were looking for. Their level of professionalism was admirable. We had a lot of creative leaders involved in the process, and they helped us keep everyone on the same page. Whenever an area sparked a lot of debate, they always found ways to diffuse the situation.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I had a completely positive experience with them. They were super responsive and they continue to be. Even after their job finished, their attentiveness to our questions or requests is awesome.
