The development of the Youth Engagement App, a mobile application designed to promote road safety awareness among young users, encompassed several critical stages, ensuring its effectiveness and user engagement: 

1. Conceptualization: This initial stage outlined the app's objectives, focusing on road safety education for the youth. It involved determining the core features, content, and learning outcomes expected from the app.

I’m the chief product officer for a company that provides remote onboarding services for the financial industry.

What challenge were you trying to address with Scale3C?

We needed a provider that had the skills to address mobile app development and support us, so we hired Scale3C.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Scale3C developed our native iOS and Android apps. It was all developed from scratch, however, we did have to basic fundamental code in place. Scale3C completely redesigned the app and put it on the market for us. They produced the software development kits for the app itself and also provided maintenance and support.

The app collects the user’s documents and identifies the person through all the necessary checks. After that, the app itself will redirect the person to the vendor’s site where they’ll find the financial service they need.

What is the team composition?

At the moment, four people are working on the project at the moment.

How did you come to work with Scale3C?

We already had contact with their CEO — they were on our network list. When it came time to have our app developed, we just reached out to them.

How much have you invested with them?

Although I don’t have the exact information, I know the project cost less than $10,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in December 2020. The development work concluded in March 2021 and the apps are now in the testing phase.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Since the apps are in the testing phase now, I don’t have any metrics to provide yet. However, in general, the quality of the work is good and we’re satisfied with it. There’s still some work we have to do on our end for the launch, but all stakeholders were pleased with Scale3C’s work.

How did Scale3C perform from a project management standpoint?

It was all very straightforward and we had our own communication channels in place — we didn’t need to use any specific tools. We had technical contacts on our side as well, so we didn’t need any superior project management.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They really went the extra mile in terms of how they approached a problem, tried to understand it, and then produced a solution — this ability definitely distinguished them from other vendors.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We didn’t work with them long enough to see anything out of the ordinary — we were quite happy with them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have at least the business-side specifications ready in order to get the best quality results.

I am the Head of Marketing at LendCare. We are a financial services company, working with over 6000 businesses to offer financing to their customers. I manage all Marketing and Brand activities throughout Canada.

For what projects/services did your company hire Scale3C?

Our company website was outdated, both aesthetically and the UX. We needed a refreshed website that was reflective of our company, brand and operated as a growth engine.

What were your goals for this project?

We needed to be able to funnel business leads easily to our business development team, and route other traffic to their respective flows. We also need the website to look modern and adhere to our brand. The impact was to have a digital presence, a landing place for future digital advertising and a simple way for our existing and prospective customers to learn about us.

How did you select this vendor?

They were referred to me by a Consultant. There was another company who began some development work for our new website and their work was sub-par. I knew I needed a company with a high level of skill, creativity and were cost effective. Scale ticked off all of those boxes.

I reviewed some of their previous sites and was very impressed by them. After meeting with them and taking them through my requirements and upon hearing their ideas, I made the decision to move forward with them.

Describe the project in detail.

The overall scope began with just website development work, using our existing brand, however, as the work began, they took the initiative to develop some concepts that I felt were much stronger than our original designer, so I decided to move ahead with Scale's suggestions.

Scale then took over all aspects of the design, wireframes, UI, etc. They created an online review board where we were able to see hi-fi and lo-fi versions of the pages. This was helpful because we could see exactly what the site would look like, instead of trying to fill in the gaps with our imagination.

What was the team composition?

We worked with approximately 4 people in total at Scale, depending on what part of the process we were in. They were all knowledgeable about their unique roles in the project. Roles were PM, Designer, UX, Development

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

I gave Scale very aggressive timelines and milestones for the work. After careful consideration, they agreed to them. I appreciated the fact that they did not just say they could do it, and then fail. They were very throughtful in their approach. The website just launched and now we're looking at establishing benchmarks.

What I can say however is based on Google Analytics and Form results, we are already capturing business leads, something we were not able to do successfully on our previous site. We also see that the UX or the flow of the site, is structured well because people are navigating their way through the site in the way that we intended them to.

Our bounce rates have exceeded industry standards. 59% vs 36% bounce rate. We're getting a good amount of organic traffic, but again, we're establishing benchmarks right now.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Scale3C set up a SLACK channel where we communicated about the project and that is where they provided links to the hi-fi pages. I was worried that the 8 hour time difference between Toronto and Luthuania would be a problem, but they were always responsive, regardless of what time it was.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They worked fairly quickly, took time to have check-in phone calls, sometimes at a moments notice and had a great deal of creativity and flexibility that I think would have been hard to find in another vendor.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Perhaps having a PM software to show milestones would have been helpful, but we did establish those milestones verbally during our calls or in our written SLACK conversations.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the founder and CTO of WorkGlue. We’ve been around for a few years, so we’re still a startup basically. We developed an online and mobile platform for any field service type organization.

Right now, it’s primarily used by construction trades. Our customers tend to have non-technical offices and rely on paper. Frequently, the only technology they use is QuickBooks for accounting and email. We offer an online platform that allows our customers to manage their businesses more efficiently.

We first rolled out an MVP to a few non-paying customers who gave us a lot of feedback. Then, we rebuilt the product, which included one mobile platform for iOS and Android as well as a website. That’s when we started signing up paying customers. About a year ago, we got our first outside investors and the money raised from those investments went into building version two of our platform.

What challenge were you trying to address with Scale3C?

We decided to outsource mobile development because we didn’t want to hire full-time mobile developers at that point. Our internal resources build the website.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Scale3C is developing our iOS and Android platform, which is designed for workers in the field. Their team integrated a clock feature for workers to log time, request time off, and have timecards approved. They also built the platform to enable users to access schedules and job assignments. Users can take photos of job sites and upload photos to track the project. Their team also integrated features such as a standardized checklist, messaging and task management functions, which enable mobile workers to do their job.

While the website and mobile app work together, they’re completely different. Basically, the website’s an in-office management system designed for smaller office staff. Users who also work in the field can take a tablet to a site and still access the full website, which also has a lot of features. It enables scheduling, gathers financial information, and creates payroll reports.

Right now, we’re in the process of raising the next round of funding. At this point, we want to continue outsourcing mobile development to Scale3C. That’s the next step other than minor updates that their team has already built.

What is the team composition?

We’ve worked with five people who weren’t all involved throughout the entirety of the project. We worked with a project manager who oversees the whole process. A UX/UI designer created the layouts and wireframes. We also work with programmers, iOS and Android developers, and an individual who manages the Q/A process.

How did you come to work with Scale3C?

We met the founders of a co-working space at an event. They had a nice website and app both of which Scale3C developed. I filed that away as that was before we had our funding. Later, I met another startup founder who showed me his app that was also developed by Scale3C. That was the second recommendation and it was around the time that we received funding. When we were ready to start, I reached out to Scale3C and told them what we wanted. We spent quite a bit of time talking online with their founders about business and their approach to projects. We liked their team and they gave us a reasonable quote. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $100,000–$125,000 on their services thus far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with them in May 2019 and our engagement’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The app officially launched during the holidays because it was a quieter time. It was convenient for us to launch the platform gradually to make sure there weren’t problems and provide it to our more technically advanced customers. As it just launched, we’re waiting to catch bugs before we start new work. We have a list of next updates, additional features, and early feedback from the field.

Without Scale3C’s work, we wouldn’t have a new app. The platform works great and our customers love it, which is the most important metric to us. Another team developed the previous app, which only had a few basic features. The new version has a lot of new features, so to compare our original app with the one that Scale3C created is like comparing apples to oranges.

How did Scale3C perform from a project management standpoint?

For a while, we had regularly scheduled conference video calls via Zoom. We set up a Slack account that allowed us to communicate and have permanent documentation. Their team used online tools to create wireframes and designs. We could see the project as it evolved and commented on their work. Before they started to code, the process was visual so we could see the original wireframes and user navigation. As we approved various pieces, their team filled in the details.

From our standpoint, we worked 24 hours a day and moved the project along quickly. Even though their team’s remote, we had constant communication. If we had any questions, we called, emailed, or used Slack. Their team communicated clearly. We knew the status of the project constantly and could comment on their work daily. The time zone difference worked to our advantage because we could leave our comments by the end of our day. They worked while we slept so when we returned to work, there were updates that incorporated our comments.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’ve worked with development teams all over the world, so I know a good one. Scale3C is a good team. I like their communication skills, documentation process, information exchanges, and individual team members. We have a great relationship with their teammates as they’ve stayed on throughout the project’s duration.

Are there any areas they could improve?

This is a common issue across the development world. Everyone could use a better way of tracking not only the project but also the financial aspects of it. I would like to see Scale3C and other companies track any deviation from the original contract better. Where deviations from the scope have a financial impact, it would be good to have a centralized place for documentation. We have a simple spreadsheet on our side and I’m sure they have their bookkeeping people who do the same, but it would be helpful to have a consolidated place where we can be in agreement.

I’m the co-founder and CEO of Home Hubspot, a real estate platform for homeowners.

What challenge were you trying to address with Scale3C?

We needed someone to develop our mobile app MVP.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Scale3C helped us develop a mobile app MVP that connects homeowners to real estate agents in a way that’s not currently available. The first thing we did was walk through the design with one of their UX professionals. They created mockups and built our MVP for iOS. They also developed our website. 

The app looks and feels like a social dating app, but it’s more professional. Homeowners put their home without the address on the app, and real estate agents bid to represent them. Agents pay to be on the app. Homeowners can hire agents from within the app and then have the ability to rate them according to reviews, prices, or services. The app has an anonymous chat feature. Users can communicate without having to give out details and get spammed. Once homeowners click the button to hire an agent, the app shuts off the conversations with other agents. At that point, the two parties exchange contact information, and we step out of the process.

At the moment, we’re in investment talks to get the rest of the money to complete the app. The holdup is on our end; we don’t have any plans to use anyone other than Scale3C.
 
What is the team composition?

We worked with a UX designer, a project manager, and two developers.

How did you come to work with Scale3C?

They were referred to us by the owner of the co-working space that I work out of. We’d used a local developer that was pretty awful in terms of what they were producing. The difference between the local people we were using and Scale3C is that Scale3C has UX design built into their offering.

How much have you invested with them?

My company spent $40,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from November–December 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We use the MVP as our demo model for investors. The investor feedback we get is that the website and the product are great. They say it looks and feels very smooth and intuitive. The first time I showed an investor, I told them we had a basic website, and he said it was way more than a landing page. The site has scrolling features and lots of stuff on it; he was very impressed.

How did Scale3C perform from a project management standpoint?

Scale3C gave me an estimate, a schedule, and a budget. We pushed each other, and it was great. If they were waiting on me for a functionality decision, they’d ask me for it rather than just sitting back and waiting. 

They delivered when they promised they would and were very good at giving timelines that they could meet. We used Trello to monitor functionality or areas that needed to be fixed.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They invested as much time as I did thinking about how to make the MVP functional and awesome. I’ll never develop anything again without first sitting down with a UX designer. Scale3C’s UX designer challenged us, which dramatically improved the product. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t imagine having a better partner for development.

Take their advice with respect to design, and include them in your functionality and design discussions.

Scale3c upgraded/rebuilt Notis for us. Notis had a beta version that was used to determine interest from potential users. Once we know what to change and build, Scale3c took that role and completed this task.

Design, frontend and backend was upgraded by Salce3c. Scale3c then added multiple new features to Notis and advised on many aspects of the build process.

What were your goals for this project?

Complete a finished working product of Notis for our users to successfully use.

Scale3c was introduced to us by another company that had used them for development with great success.

Our project is very large, for this reason I will summaries what Scale3c completed for us. First they did a code review, explained the holes in the code and what can be done to improve is. This included security aspects.

We then spent time designing the look of the app as it needed to be improved. after this implementing the design, and functionality with other small changes took place. the backend data collection system was made more robust. Then the new features were added.

After this was completed we worked through bugs that always occur then we spent time on updating our website to ensure it met our app branding.

ScaleTech has delivered a 100% client registration rate and minimal critical bugs after the go-live. The team has also achieved reasonable deviations from the initial budget.
