We partnered with Ontik to bring Fitmate—a flexible fitness and wellness platform—to life across mobile and web. The scope covered UX/UI, mobile and web development, API integrations, and financial modeling.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Demonstration on staging app following each functionality completion. These were tested by myself mostly to ensure they met requirements

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

Project management was poor. They initiated timelines however it was not adhered. This was not so much of an issue as long as the quality of the outcome was great. However, the quality was poor most of the time, leading to several delays. There were other delays due to third-party suppliers' lack of response. The quality issues led to frustrations I expressed to them several times. However, they did not seem to understand or appreciate that their work was poor quality.  In fact, during our feedback session, I found them complaining that I was difficult and thus they were frustrated. It them became apparent that I was working with the wrong partner. This had been indicated to me by my previous CTO and the new CTO I recruited. I decided to terminate the project following the completion of the development milestone.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Nothing much. They appeared friendly but disingenuous. 

Are there any areas for improvement or something Ontik Technology Ltd. could have done differently?

Everything.

1. Project management - Ensure the availability of a clear project plan that is reviewed at every meeting.
2. Inexperienced staff - The staff seemed rather inexperienced and asked questions which they could have found out just by searching the Internet. Thus they could not interpret my requirements well which led to several delays.
3. Communication - They insisted on communication by text rather than the phone could have resolved things quicker. I repeatedly reminded them of this yet they never applied it.
4. Poor technical skills - Whilst I appreciated the hard work by the backend engineer I believe that he strugglied to solve some of the issues faced in the development process.
5. Management Apathy - Management appeared apathetic to my needs as a cleint and this became obvious in the last stages as we tried to close the project.
6. Unethical behaviour by management - We agreed the payment milestones which i respected. I deposited $2000 at the start of the project. The plan was that i pay them 2500 after the development and a final sum of $2000 after QA and push to live environment. However following the several quality issues I agreed with them to terminate the project and take my codes and re-develop it elsewhere. We agreed this and they confirmed this in writing including a safeguard of both parties that we use an escrow system (i.e. Upworks or Escrow,com) so i could deposit the "development phase milestone" fees plus escrow charges. In good faith we progressed with this after some challenges setting up the escrow by them however i helped by connecting with them on Upworks. They sent me a contract which i amended to reflect the agreement as the their email. They then refused to accept the contract and asked me to include time for code review which i did and that they will have to fix any issues we find in the code before final release of funds. I funded the escrow account and waited for codes. They insist that i send them credentials for my Gitlab where the codes are to be sent. My CTO and I told them that they already had access and helped them with any issues. I shared evidence that they had access. It was their holiday so we wished them good holidays and waited. Following the holidays we requested the codes again and was then told that their legal and finance will get back to me. The legal and finance was the same person who had sent me the agreement email. The same person i had communicated with on Upworks to set up the contract which he had failed to accept even after me loading the escrow and amending contracted to include milestone as agreed. Days went by without any response causing frustration even after several phone calls trying to understand what the issue was. They finally sent an email effectively blackmailing me for more money before they release any codes. They were now asking for double the development cost and insisting that i pay the final QA and push to live environment costs which was work they had not done. Their reason was that my request to take a week to review codes and for them to fix any issues with the codes before handover had made them "nervous" that i will not release the funds. In this new email they were now also asking that i use an appointed agent in Bangladesh for the money transfer rather than the escrow which protected both sides. It became clear to me that this was an extortion plan. They thought they codes was so important to me thus they were going to find was to extort money from me. I responded by reminding them of our agreement and contracts and refused to pay any money and thus they are welcome to codes if this was their plan.

The scope of work involved the end-to-end design and development of a comprehensive web application and learning platform for our language academy. Key deliverables included a user-friendly homepage featuring a welcome message, mission statement, and highlights of core platform features. A dynamic course catalog was developed, allowing users to browse all available courses with filtering options and in-depth course descriptions.

The enrollment system supports three distinct learning modes: curriculum-based (with fixed schedules and fees), one-to-one personalized sessions, and small group classes. A dedicated user portal enables account registration, course enrollment, and access to a personalized dashboard displaying course schedules, payment history, and recorded content.

The teacher portal equips instructors with tools to manage classes, view student information, and monitor payment details. Additionally, an admin panel was delivered with robust functionality for managing users and instructors, tracking payments (integrated with Stripe and PayPal), and auditing classes, including attendance, session recordings, and user feedback.

The project also included seamless Zoom integration for live classes, with automatic session recording and features aligned with privacy and data protection standards. Altogether, the scope ensured delivery of all core modules and technical integrations required to operate a fully functional and scalable online language academy.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The platform was launched on schedule with all core functionalities fully operational, including user registration, course enrollment, live class integration, and payment processing.

Teacher onboarding was streamlined, with instructors actively managing their classes via the teacher portal.

Payment integration was successfully implemented using Stripe/PayPal, with secure transactions and automated receipts working as intended.

The admin dashboard has enabled efficient tracking of attendance, payments, and session recordings, significantly reducing manual operational workload.

The team demonstrated strong project management throughout. They delivered major milestones on time and kept us informed with regular updates. Their responsiveness was excellent—they were quick to clarify requirements, address concerns, and adapt to feedback, even when our needs evolved during the process. Overall, they showed a proactive and collaborative approach, which made the experience smooth and efficient.

Overall, we were very satisfied with the collaboration. That said, one area for improvement could be in documentation—more detailed technical documentation or admin user guides would have made onboarding smoother for our internal team. Additionally, while communication was generally responsive, setting clearer expectations around timelines for feedback or iterations could have helped streamline decision-making during busier phases. These are relatively minor points and didn’t detract from the overall success of the project.
