We’ve been thrilled with the partnership results and plan to work again with Matrix Media Solutions (P) Ltd. again. We were impressed with their technical and design skills. The team also did a good job of understanding and delivering on our needs.

I’m a mediator and trainer at John Ford and Associates. My company’s primary focus is mediation and training at the workplace to help people resolve conflict. Over the years, I’ve expanded beyond pure mediation and started selling cards I use at work as a peacemaker and mediator.

What challenge were you trying to address with Matrix Media Solutions (P) Ltd.?

I hired Matrix Media to develop the app version of my cards. For context, they took over from a previous development company that I used to start the development. That company got bought out by another company and handed me off to another team. My experience with that team was difficult — they weren’t professional and couldn’t do what I asked them to do. I did get version one of my app, but I was unhappy, so I switched to the Matrix Media team.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Matrix Media started developing the app by migrating it to Node.js. They worked on the previous developer’s code, advising me that if something went wrong and they couldn’t figure it out, it would be much easier to rebuild the app. The team also advised me on a more suitable program to use. 

I came up with a monetization strategy where we’d give the app to users for free for a week. After a week, we’d give participants the option to either subscribe for $0.99 per month or to purchase the app outright for $18.99. We also developed a referral program where if a user made a referral, their free usage would be extended by a month. 

The monetization strategy was put in place, but it wasn’t working. I asked Pritam (Head of Key Accounts & Creative) if they had anyone on their team who could brainstorm with me about the monetization strategy. He got back to me and referred me to Abhishek (VP). We then had a meeting and talked about Abhishek’s ideas for monetization. 

I told them I was thinking about using ChatGPT, and Abhishek reviewed what we could do. He said he had a lightbulb moment about the project. As a result, we developed a model where users get points from the app, making it similar to a gaming experience. Users would get the app for free upon download and receive points. We also changed the referral system and gave it three levels with different points.

In other words, users could still get the app for free, but to keep using it, they’d have to keep buying points or make referrals — the person who made the referral would get 100 points, and the person referred would get 150 points. This motivated users to refer other users to get extra points. We also worked on graphics where users would be given a heart-shaped tank that would get fuller and fuller when they earned points. 

At present, we’re working on the app’s notification system that prompts people and checks in on them weekly. Meanwhile, around 600 people have downloaded the app, but only 30 have made purchases, so conversion is a challenge. To fix this, Matrix Media and I have built a system where an auto-responder system will kick into action the moment a user downloads the app. It will guide them around how the app works. We’ll also create educational content about empathy and emotional intelligence.

I mainly interface with Pritam and Abhishek. However, other people work on the project, including a UX designer, a React Native developer, a Node.js developer, a business analyst, and a DevOps engineer.

I was unhappy during my work with the previous developer, so I reached out to a friend who I knew was developing an app. The person was interested but didn’t have the capacity to do what my app required. As a result, he referred me to Matrix Media. That was when our relationship started.

My experience with Matrix Media has been phenomenal. They’ve taken professionalism to another level in terms of responsiveness. They stay up late to accommodate me since I’m in California and they’re in India. Moreover, they’re friendly and take ownership of my app, showing me that they understand their responsibilities.

Their skills have also been great. The team has fixed the problems that the previous developers couldn’t resolve. As a result, I feel excited about the app again — they’re taking everything to the next level.

Pritam and Abhishek have been wonderful. Abhishek is the mastermind behind the new monetization breakthrough. Because of their work, I am confident in my product and their technical ability. They’re always looking for ways to make my requests happen. They’ve been creative at finding solutions. 

Pritam is a great team leader. He coordinates everything. When I send an email, he always gets back to me through Zoom, Google Meet, and chats. Moreover, the team is realistic in terms of timelines — they’ve managed my expectations well. We’re moving in the right direction at a good pace. They keep showing me signs of their work and tell me whenever they have a holiday. Overall, everything is well-coordinated and managed.

The engagement has been a truly wonderful experience for me. I’ve got my passion back, and I’m hopeful and excited about the project. I’ve got great hopes for the product in terms of what it can do. Moreover, I truly feel like we’re a team now. I’m truly happy with their services.

Matrix Media is trustworthy and professional. The best way to handle a partnership with them is to communicate and be upfront about your needs. In our engagement, I’ve been quite hands-on, even though I’m not a technical person. They’ve given me the space I need to give my input. They take ownership of the project without depriving me of my voice. Overall, you have to speak up for what you want and trust them — they’ll help you achieve it.

Matrix Media built the website from scratch. They worked on the front- and backend and then integrated the API. After filling out information about a package, like the address and dimensions, customers can click purchase, download the shipping label, and bring the package to us. There is also a place on the website to track the package.

The website and API integration makes the process much easier, and customers can purchase through our company directly. We can also keep track of all the packages, and our company looks more professional because the label is provided right away on our website. We also have a profit margin and can save time because everything is automated with the API integration.

We have weekly calls where Matrix Media lets us know what they’re doing and send us follow-ups afterward. Some of our goals have taken longer because they're more difficult, but Matrix Media has been good about following the timeline, and they work outside of regular hours to get things done. We use WhatsApp to communicate. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're very responsive, and if there are any issues, they fix them within an hour. We can text them anytime, and they jump on the phone with us quickly. They’ve proven to us that they can be trusted and know what they’re doing.

The only issue we’ve ever had is the time zone difference, and we wish they had someone working during our regular business hours. Sometimes it's difficult to get help during the holidays as well.

Be patient and trust them because they know what they’re doing. Explain everything as clearly as possible, and repeat it as often as necessary so that the project comes out the way you want it to. Sometimes things get lost in translation when we give them short descriptions and it sets us back, so make sure you’re clear about what you want.

They are quite strict on their user acceptance testing (UAT) processes. They get the work done and don’t disappear after getting payment. We have been working with them for almost five years now, and we have never had any issues.

We communicate via Skype and email; the team is really available when I need any assistance or advice. They work quite well, especially working remotely on big projects. Sometimes when working remotely, it can be a bit of a challenge to get everyone together at the same time, but with the circumstances we are currently in, they have managed to pull through quite nicely on that.

I am in South Africa, and Matrix Media is in India, so everything was done remotely. There hasn’t been much of an issue when it comes to language barriers. The team understands me quite well. They have a very hands-on approach when it comes to the type of work I needed from Matrix.

We did not have our internal engineering team and wanted a company who would provide end to end solution with proper security.

Design and Development within a specified time frame. Testing of mobile app solution for large load and security. We were perticular about the user friend design and quick actions on mobile phone as it was highly user centric and we are expecting lot of chat between users.

As usual, we searched for few vendors. Got proposals. Communicated with each of them. We even communicated with Tech team lead to see how well they can communicate and how well they participate in giving the suggestions. We never wanted simply "Yes Sir" kind of company. Finally Selected Matrix based on their understand of our project, flexible thinking about project execution and certainly tech capability. To be honest, they were not the cheapest.

First we discussed the over all concept. Then it was scoping, Matrix provided us the wire frame, based on that after finer discussion, final mobile app screens, its business functions and database structure were decided. Project time line as well. We are unable to provide the concept in detail here but it was based on new idea of user using flights, taxi and cars and optimising its travel and earnings.

At frist Project Manager and business functional analyst was assigned, Then Graphic personnel for proper wire framing/screens and then developers. Over all Project Manager & Business analyst. 2 x Mobile developer 1 x Web services developer. 1 x Graphic 1 x Tester and part time Server architect personnel.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Project was delivered properly. There was a slight delay as we did one last minute change in business logic. The entry screens and others were quite well explained. So we did not have any major issue on having the app approved on stores. The biggest success was our to be investor are very impressed and we are on closing of next round of funding for massive push of our concept in market.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

It was quote good. Intially there were some teething issue in understanding, but it was smooth after that. Their team seems to have good experience with client like us. They did helped us with knowledge and training as well.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

As I mentioned above, I was impressed by their knowledge in such area of development. They seems to have good experience in mobile app from user interaction and suggested some constructive changes which we never thought about it. I like their approach of working as if they're our partner and their concern over making the app more user-friendly. Excellent knowledge in webservices & DB so that future expansions are possible without much problem.

Overall it was very good. But they need improvement in graphic quality and putting the right content. We later got the content proof reading internally.

The team started by sending mockups to finalize the design; then the development phase started and we were receiving weekly reports of the deliverables and workflow. The last step was bug fixing and review.
