We had created a piece of software for social determinants of health aimed at health insurance companies. When we created it, we knew that we wouldn't be able to develop the database in a robust fashion — we needed some experts to help us.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The Jed Mahonis Group helped us develop a web app with a mobile version, as well as a robust database behind it. Their goal was to make the app responsive. As for the technology stack, the API backend was built in Ruby on Rails, the hosted resources used Ubuntu, our long-term support servers used Linode, and the admin dashboard was also built on Ruby on Rails.

How did you come to work with The Jed Mahonis Group?

We were referred to The Jed Mahonis Group by Medical Alley, an organization that supports startups in the medical space in the Midwest. We reached out to one of the heads at Medical Alley and told them what we were looking for. The Jed Mahonis Group came highly regarded, so we ended up hiring them — it was a no-brainer. In fact, they were the only company that Medical Alley recommended, which spoke volumes of them.

We spent around $52,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together around April 2024, and the project ended in July 2024. However, we're hoping to pursue an additional project that fell out of the scope of this project. They've already provided a quote for that project, and they're still offering hosting for the web app.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Not only did The Jed Mahonis Group exceed our expectations with the database development and API setup, but they also exceeded our expectations with their UI design support. When we launched our MVP database for the product, we had a few million lines of information, so it would take a minute or two to get results.

Now, the database takes half a second to pull up results, is very secure, and its UI is impressive. The UI that they built, in particular, is beautiful, user-friendly, and responsive.

We had various milestones set for this project, one of which was having a working demo for the app. The Jed Mahonis Group successfully delivered it in June 2024. This was our major goal because we had customers who actually wanted to have their eyes on the solution. Additionally, our second goal was achieving full production, and The Jed Mahonis Group easily delivered on that in July 2024.

How did The Jed Mahonis Group perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was amazing. In previous experiences with other firms, I mainly dealt with project managers because they were the ones facing customers. Although the UI/UX designers and developers were the actual teammates working on the project, they didn't interact with me.

However, while working with The Jed Mahonis Group, I had the opportunity to interact with the whole team. They were very easy to communicate with and responded quickly. Whether I had a question for them at 7 p.m. or 10 a.m., I always got a quick response. If I asked them for changes, they made them immediately, which was impressive.

We primarily communicated via Slack and email. The Jed Mahonis Group set up our own internal group within Slack, so it represented about 90% of our communication. Moreover, we required email for exchanging larger files. It seemed like they were on Slack all the time because their communication was great.

Are there any employees from the service provider's team that you would like to give a shout-out to in this review?

Firstly, I would give a shout-out to Michael (Business Development Representative), who was our first point of contact and was amazing overall. Secondly, I want to mention that working with Robert (CEO) and Tom (CTO) was amazing as well.

Tom was a next-level individual. He understood databases and the mathematics behind them, as well as the customer-facing side. I can't stress enough how rare it is to find that combination of skills. UX engineers usually don't interact with the end user, but Tom understood the whole product. He was able to listen to what we wanted to build and also offered suggestions for things we also needed.

Tom was always there for us and anticipated our needs almost as if he could read our minds; he was a mind-reader. Moreover, he understood the whole workflow from the backend to the frontend.

Additionally, I would like to give a shout-out to Carrie (Project Manager). She led the project, attended all the meetings, and put the guardrails on the meetings. Moreover, she kept us on track and was extremely friendly.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The Jed Mahonis Group's anticipation of our needs was impressive. We went with them with a contract, and they not only were able to fulfill our needs, but they went above and beyond. Although we had a good idea of the direction we wanted to go, their anticipation of our needs leveled up the project. Therefore, the end result was better than expected.

I worked with other development and consultancy teams before, and my experience wasn't great. I had awful experiences with others, and hiring them resulted in more work for me than less. When we asked those other teams to do something, they told us that it wouldn't work and that we needed to do it their way, so I almost had to prove to them that what we wanted was possible.

However, The Jed Mahonis Group's added value was that they were able to anticipate our needs. It was mind-blowing that they not only did what we wanted, but they also offered suggestions based on their experience to fulfill future needs we didn't even know we would have in the future.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I would provide constructive feedback because I consider it valuable. However, I didn't see any negatives, nor did I have constructive feedback for The Jed Mahonis Group.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

Have a good idea of where you want to go. Coming with almost no direction for the project can be dangerous because the other team can buy something terrible if you request something terrible to be built.

The Jed Mahonis Group has been responsible for designing and developing our mobile application. The Jed Mahonis Group has been developing the app from scratch for iOS and Android. One of the features they’ve developed is a login and sign-up page; there are also different qualifications to get onto the application, depending on whether a user is on the free or paid version of the app. 

Once a user's profile has been created, the user will be connected to an attorney in real-time via video chat. Users can choose from two different types of attorneys depending on their needs. The Jed Mahonis Group is also helping us with autoplay in vehicles.

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Our application is currently under development. Initially, we initiated a brainstorming session with The Jed Mahonis Group to evaluate if the team understood our company's vision and if they could provide the necessary services as we progressed. 

They're creating everything I envisioned for the company. They provide suggestions based on their experience. We're on a budgeted amount per month for app development. We set up an agreement to utilize the team for the services we need for development on a monthly basis. 

The team is developing the app for iOS and Android. Our app has a 2-user interface, consisting of a mate and runner side. Mates can create a profile and choose to auto-populate certain sections. Still, they also have the option to provide specific information about themselves, such as their completed races, running distance and speed, and CPR certification. 

On the runner side, the user creates a profile and can save a credit card to the account. When they're ready to run, they can open the app to show the available runners in their area using geolocation. From there, they can choose who they want to run with based on their profile. The Jed Mahonis Group took it one step further with AI technology to match the runner with a mate who closely matches their preferences and is specialized in what they're looking for. This way, they can have a more tailored running experience with a compatible running partner. This information is essential for runners to consider when deciding whether or not they want to run with a particular mate.

This app comes with toggle switches that allow the runner to choose between wearing headphones or talking during their run. They can select their desired distance, and the app determines the price based on the distance. Additionally, the app tracks the runner's location during the run, allowing them to share it with a loved one. Once the run is complete, the runner can leave a review and a tip.

The team will be responsible for all updates and maintenance moving forward.

I’m the VP of operations at MarketBeat. We offer a financial services newsletter and have about 3.5 million subscribers. The Jed Mahonis Group has developed our native Android and iOS applications. We had the first version of the app previously developed by a different company using React.js, and we asked The Jed Mahonis Group to recreate it and develop a native app. Our in-house designer had managed the app’s design, and the API was already created too. 

Additionally, we’ve handled the app’s marketing. We launched a first version last year, and The Jed Mahonis Group is currently working on a second version.

We needed to replace our previous app version to stay competitive since it was very error-prone — we received a lot of support tickets. We have a large user base from our newsletter’s subscribers, so we needed an efficient app to provide them with a good UX. 

Since we launched the app’s first version developed by The Jed Mahonis Group, we haven’t received a significant amount of support tickets. We weren’t really looking to hit specific metrics or hard numbers, our goal was to provide a better experience for our existing subscribers, and The Jed Mahonis Group has helped us achieve that.

The Jed Mahonis Group’s project management is excellent. We have a weekly Zoom meeting, and The Jed Mahonis Group’s project manager is always prepared and organized — the meeting lasts around 10–15 minutes. We also have a Slack group where our development teams communicate during the week to resolve any issues that may arise.

Moreover, The Jed Mahonis Group has met the arranged timelines. They’ve given us access to their Trello board, where they track our project’s progress and ensure it’s moving forward. Before the project officially started, The Jed Mahonis Group had to find out all the use cases and user experiences so their engineers could go through each one, which we approved before the project started.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most impressed with The Jed Mahonis Group’s organization. I’ve worked with other companies before that were extremely disorganized, and working with them was a struggle. The timelines provided by The Jed Mahonis Group have been accurate, and I’m always impressed at our meetings.

I’m the technology project manager at a nonprofit organization called Adopt a Classroom. I put out classroom coordinates, tech development projects, primarily using our Salesforce-based platform, as well as other tools that we’ve integrated into our ecosystem. 

Adopt a Classroom is an online nonprofit that helps teachers and schools raise money for classroom supplies and educational materials. The organization has been around since 1998, and it’s one of the first crowdfunding platforms on the internet. 

The way it works is teachers and schools can create a fundraising page on our website and then share it with individual donors to contribute. Donors have the option to choose if 100% of their donations go directly to the teachers. Teachers can spend those funds at a network of educational vendors we partner with — we have 30 total vendors. We often partner with a number of corporate sponsors as well as foundations on seasonal programs and grant opportunities.

What challenge were you trying to address with The Jed Mahonis Group?

We had a web application that was built in Heroku using Ruby on Rails. It was a middleware that we used for inventory management. The Heroku-based tool was built in 2017 when we were converting our systems over into the Salesforce ecosystem. Initially, the tools developed were one-time-use tools with the idea that eventually we would develop something else for the vendor data. 

As a nonprofit organization, we always tried to look for where we could save, and we used this tool too much longer than we had originally anticipated. It was very inefficient and took a lot of staff time. The tool also had many errors, and it didn’t have built-in error reporting. There would be manual workarounds needed in order to manage this database. The tool was eating up a fair number of resources on the Heroku side, which we got billed based on time usage. 

We needed to have a tool that was more stable, so we could be confident that we could update the inventory for all our vendor partners. In addition, we needed something that wouldn’t require as much human intervention to work, especially during busier times of the year, including school season when it was most critical for us to have the most up-to-date product information.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had a web application that was designed to import data from CSC files of a product detail that our vendors would supply. The Jed Mahonis Group would ingest that data and export it in a format that was readable by our e-commerce platform. They also analyzed our existing tool, suggested changes, and advised us on either restructuring the tool or replacing it with a new application.

We worked with three people from The Jed Mahonis Group: a dedicated developer, a project manager, and a customer-facing specialist.

How did you come to work with The Jed Mahonis Group?

We were getting quotes from a number of potential partners, and one of our board members was on a podcast that The Jed Mahonis Group hosted. This person told us that their team knew Ruby on Rails, so we reached out to them. They came with the closest estimation to our projected budget, and they had immediate availability because it was a high-priority project for us. We had an introductory call with The Jed Mahonis Group with our requirements and business mission. Then, they came back to us with a proposal that we signed.

We started the project in August 2020, and it was wrapped up in October 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We measured the difference in staff time. I was the person managing this before, and I was tracking all the hours I spent. It was easy for us to go back and look at how much time we were spending a month before the changes. We found that our hours vary depending on the time of year, but we saved 8–12 hours of staff time per month.

We simply checked in on a weekly basis, and we used Google Meet video calls. 

We worked on a short-term project. In fact, our initial estimate was 25 hours, but we ended up expanding the scope out. The Jed Mahonis Group finished the project in closer to 40 hours.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The Jed Mahonis Group’s price point was great, and they had the ability to resource it rather quickly. We discovered later in the process that The Jed Mahonis Group was very flexible in working with a nonprofit organization. After that, we ended up using some ideas that we didn’t consider before. We reached out to their team, and they took care of the changes without a new contract. That was very pleasant and helpful. 

One of my colleagues also interacted with the same developer a few months later, and he was happy to answer all questions. The Jed Mahonis Group’s ability and willingness to provide follow-up support and assistance from a maintenance perspective was definitely different from the developers we had worked with in the past.

Any advice for potential customers?

Having clear outlines and the use case in advance will be helpful. Based on my own experience as a tech project manager, I tend to not over-communicate with teams while they’re working because I don’t want to wait until a weekly status meeting. However, The Jed Mahonis Group has a high level of ability to communicate with all their team members. I also recommend taking advantage of their quick response time and openness to ongoing communication because that can definitely lead to faster results and more efficiency in the project overall.

I had a general concept, and they helped me develop the app and implement different ideas I had. They also let me utilize their internal marketing resource to handle the marketing pieces of the platform after it was live. The app is currently available in iOS and we’ll build the Android version in phase two.

I found them online, and they had good reviews. It also turned out that a friend of mine had done an app with them as well. He had a great experience with them. What’s more, I loved that The Jed Mahonis Group was from Minnesota because that’s where I live too.

I did call and talk to a few other agencies to get a feel for who I wanted. I talked with Tim and discovered right away that he understood what I was looking to do and he’d be realistic with the timeframe.

It’s been a slower launch because I wanted it to be a little more organic. The timeframe was extended because of me more than them. They were great at letting me change things as we went along. I had them do a lot of graphics but once I saw them, I hated it and went back to the drawing board.

The Jed Mahonis Group has been nothing but wonderful about accommodating my change requests. I’m really Johnny on the spot, and they’re flexible to that. I’m well aware I’m not their only client but they always make me feel like I am.

A highlight was definitely the marketing aspect because after building the app, they took it to the next step, which I wasn’t expecting when I initially hired them. It’s been an amazing engagement, they’re phenomenal at what they do.

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the president and founder of VSI Labs. Our company provides research and advisory to companies that design, develop, or sell into the market for active safety or automated driving. We’re a supplier and consultancy largely to the automotive industry, but also to the overall technology industry.

What challenge were you trying to address with The Jed Mahonis Group?

We basically needed a website, but really we needed more than that. We needed a cloud-based platform that would allow us to host our research assets. Not only did we want a host, but we wanted a platform where our clients could consume our research and that’s really device-independent.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The Jed Mahonis Group designs and maintains our research platform. They also handle the backend work associated with it, so a lot of databases, API calls, and tasks like that. We do the website ourselves, but the platform that they work on is really how we deliver our products and services. We use third-party hosting sites like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Trello is used for all of the staging when developing or modifying the platform.

There is one main point of contact on their team that handles the vast majority of the work and they delegate among their team.

How did you come to work with The Jed Mahonis Group?

A friend of a friend introduced me to one of their teammates. I knew I needed a partner like The Jed Mahonis Group to embark on this journey, but beyond that, I needed creativity and design work. We had some meetings and started working together and it has worked well.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together in October 2014 and then launched our first product in about 6–8 months. We continue to work together and make enhancements.

I can speak to more qualitative measures and they are very hands-on with personable service.

The team is very open and there isn’t any hesitation to communicate with us. They’re very good about sticking to their time tables and communication as well.  In terms of managing our expectations, they’re pretty accurate about that.

The Jed Mahonis Group is pretty flexible and never afraid to try something new. They’re very diligent and tend to bring creativity to the table. When I have a new idea, they help formulate it.

I’m the CEO of a new healthcare app, designed to allow specialty positions to trade call shifts.

We needed help with app development and had started off with a vendor that didn’t meet our standards. We wanted to find someone new to build our app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They built our app on iOS and Android. The team also created the functionality of our app on our website as well. Additionally, the team actively participated with focus groups we held for physicians at a golf club.

What is the team composition?

We work with two people from their team. I know they have a couple of coders they subcontract work out to as well.

They were referred to us and we decided to meet. We really liked their leadership team and decided to work together from there.

We’ve spent about $144,000. We trust them so much that we gave them a small stake in our company.

We started working together in March 2019, and our work is ongoing.

We have a weekly call via Zoom. Before COVID-19, we would meet at their workshop 1–2 times a week. They’ve always been great at meeting deadlines.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re really interested and passionate about our app. The team was especially grateful when we gave them a stake in our company, and were driven in helping us succeed.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

There are always growing pains. When we first started, they coached us to do an MVP that we could actually deliver. Balancing what we wanted and what we needed was one of our biggest hurdles.

Anyone will have a good experience. They’re smart and have a wealth of knowledge. I’m impressed with their acumen.
