I’m the owner of Folkicks, a folklore shoe and accessory store that sells products for Mexican folklore dance like flamenco and belly dancing. We sell mostly on Amazon, and we’re launching our own Shopify site.

What challenge were you trying to address with HK Associates, Certified Public?

I was looking for someone who knew how to navigate around the issues with Amazon’s taxes because of how they store inventory in multiple states. I had issues filing my taxes for that, and HK Associates was knowledgeable in that sector.

Along with tax preparation, HK Associates taught me how to maintain my books.

How did you come to work with HK Associates, Certified Public?

I searched on Google for local services. My decision ended up being based on their website’s quality. I never had a CPA before, so I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, but I knew I needed someone I could trust.

I’ve called about six CPAs, and HK Associates was the most friendly and clear on their prices.

How much have you invested with them?

So far, we’ve spent about $2,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in February 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I’ve had no issues with HK Associates. They did a great job of filing both my income and state taxes. They even went above and beyond to find the right information so I could file my county taxes.

I had filed my taxes incorrectly in previous years, and they were actually able to go back to those and amend those returns for me. I had overpaid the state, so I was able to get my money back. So far, everything has gone smoothly.

How did HK Associates, Certified Public perform from a project management standpoint?

As I said, it was a smooth process. During the beginning of the process, we communicated on a daily basis. If the issue is not as confusing, we just speak through email. If it’s a bit more complicated, we will speak on the phone to clarify things. Most of the calls involved them educating me by keeping me in the loop during the whole process.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The communication was impressive. They’re also skilled in their field.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t have any issues with them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be completely transparent at the beginning about your situation. At first, I was a bit embarrassed to admit that I had no idea what I was doing during my first year of running a business. Give them all of the information you have, and they will do a great job of putting all the pieces together.
