I’m the director of commercial services for a water and environmental sector consultancy. We work with regulators within the water and waste industries. We provide a host of innovative products and services to help our customers meet their challenges.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with GEL Studios?

We wanted to refresh our website and point our growing customer base to a strong resource showcasing relevant information. Our existing website was outdated and didn’t align well with our brand, so our goal was to build an online presence that we could be proud of. We wanted to create a more interactive UX, drive traffic to our site, and encourage users to find us organically.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We already had a strong brand image, but we wanted our website to reflect that. We went through a few approaches with GEL Studios and decided we didn’t want a content-driven site because it wasn’t viable for us to maintain. They created mock-ups and guided us toward an ostensible structure that would be manageable moving forward. 

GEL Studios has been responsible for designing, developing, and implementing a new website from scratch based on how we want to present ourselves to customers. They’ve used MODX to develop the site. Our aim was to create a clean website, so the site only enables individual button clicks, and we have no drop-downs. 

The new site gives users access to information about our company and provides an interactive UX. Our team has owned most of the content creation, but GEL Studios has provided SEO and Google Ads consulting services. They’ve also helped structure our enormous amounts of content by developing a filing system for our products and services. The system helps direct users to the content they’re looking for via filters. Site visitors have the option to filter their searches alphabetically, by theme, or by keyword. 

The website also features contact details. GEL Studios has linked our contact forms to our CRM, which helps us manage leads directly through the site. The site also captures user insights and analytics that we can access through our CRM. We have Freeware hosted on our site, and GEL Studios integrated the ability to download Freeware automatically via lead magnets. The lead magnets also provide our staff with lead reports and brochures. 

Apart from developing the website, GEL Studios has also future-proofed the site by building a login area for customers. Additionally, they’ve trained us to upload and manage content and update information in the backend. The team has also handled the website launch; they continue to host the website and provide ongoing CMS support. 

We’re always working on extending the website’s capabilities. For example, we recently integrated our staff’s business cards into website pages that function as digital business cards. 

Our support contract includes training new team members on web development and content creation. Additionally, GEL Studios has built two other websites for our digital books. 

What is the team composition?

We primarily work with our client director, but Carly (Creative Director) designed our website, and Graeme (Managing Director) helped us launch the site. We also have a development team behind the scenes.

How did you come to work with GEL Studios?

I knew of them through a partner company that had their website developed with GEL Studios. We asked them for a quote as they were already a trusted supplier.

What is the status of this engagement?

We kicked off the website development process in April 2021, and the partnership is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

GEL Studios has listened to us and delivered the features and functionality we asked for. The website is user-friendly and easy to update; the MODX platform works well for our needs. 

We measure success by reviewing the traffic volume, the time spent on our site, and the number of leads we generate. We’ve also taken customer and internal feedback into account, and we’re very happy with the website and its performance. 

How did GEL Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

GEL Studios has managed the project well. In the beginning, they drove the pace and approached the design phase with clear objectives. We challenged them during the development phase. For example, we pushed them to listen to our desire to stand out, and they challenged us with their advice to make the website sustainable. 

They’ve been intensely focused on meeting deadlines, which we’ve appreciated. During the development phase, they introduced us to ActiveCollab, an online project board that enables us to post questions and comments.

What did you find most impressive about them?

As a non-technical person, I’ve been impressed with GEL Studios’ ability to translate technical jargon into layman’s terms. They’ve done a great job bridging the gap for me, which has been helpful. They’re also very friendly and willing to explain things to me anytime. I feel like they’re invested in making the website as good as it can be.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only thing is that I wish they’d brought accessibility into the conversation sooner, so we could incorporate it into the initial website design phase. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Focus on communication, and don’t be afraid to challenge them and engage in a healthy dialogue. The more you feed into the process, the more you’ll get out of it.

I am the Director of a custom exhibition stand building contractor. We design, construct and install exhibition stands for clients from the UK, Europe as well as the USA, Asia and Australasia. Our clients are from a vast range of industries exhibiting not just in the UK but internationally too.

We initially instructed Gel Studios to review our existing website. Having recently undertaken a complete rebrand for our company, we wanted to reflect our company's value within our website and demonstrate clearly why a company should choose to work with us. The task was to communicate what we already knew about ourselves as a company to prospective clients. Our website was normally the first port of call for companies looking for a new partner to handle their exhibition stand(s) for them. So it needed to communicate to them that we had the knowledge and expertise to be able to manage their projects, before they had even spoken to us. It needed to silently introduce ourselves to them and in turn ensure they were left in no doubt that we were the company to make contact with.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Our collaboration actually came about through an informal chat about our website. Thinking we knew what was needed, it was very quickly realised that they would not be able to work with our existing website. They explained why a completely new build was needed, and demonstrated what the benefits would be. Their knowledge left us in no doubt that they knew what they were talking about and that they had the skills to realise our objectives. We were also made to feel that it would very much be part of the process.

We had an initial meeting in which we explained about our company in great detail. From products and services to the process of an exhibition stand from initial contact to the successful installation of an exhibition stand many months down the line. A very long meeting in which our opinion was very much valued. From here, we worked on the journey that potential clients would take through our website. These proved to be incredibly important steps in the process. We were given timescales for each stage so that we could manage this from a business point of view also. Wire frames were provided at each stage to ensure that we were happy as each set of pages were designed. It was also made clear where firm decisions were needed to be made and whereby any changes may cause delays in the project or additional costs. So everything was very transparent.

Our initial introductory meeting was with Graeme, the Managing Director. But once the process commenced, we worked with Carly, the Creative Director through the majority of the process.

The change to our website changed our business immeasurably. Our shop window became our showroom is the best way to describe it. It elevated our business within the industry and not only did our volume to the website increase dramatically but our order values increased substantially.

We were given a timeline as to each stage, what would happen next, what would be presented and what would be needed from us. On the rare occasion that Carly was unavoidably available, Graeme stepped in, fully up to speed with our project.

We basically felt like they were an extension to our team. That the success of our website was just as important to Gel as it was to us.

No - it was the perfect experience for us.

I’m a senior digital project executive at Culligan International, a water treatment company. We sell different water dispensers to businesses. In my role, I handle multiple workflows across our business regarding website management and other digital activities of all sorts. This includes managing all of our service providers.

What challenge were you trying to address with GEL Studios?

We needed help with web development and maintenance. Originally, we had a WordPress website, but we needed to create a brand-new website on MODX.

What was the scope of their involvement?

I collaborate with GEL Studios on our website development projects and tasks, acting as the liaison between my company and theirs. Originally, they helped us develop a MODX website from scratch. For that project, they weren’t in charge of the design because another company had already done the designs. Still, they helped us adjust those designs and deploy the website.

So far, GEL Studios has helped us revamp 16 websites on MODX, and they’ve helped us develop one completely from scratch. Whenever my colleagues request web development or design changes, I put together a brief and give it to GEL Studios to execute.

As for the technology stack, we use MODX as the CMS to manage our website. Still, we’re not very involved in the technical side; GEL Studios handles everything. We just tell them what to do and collaborate with them to deploy it.

In 2020, GEL Studios hired an in-house designer who collaborated with my manager to create a new design for our website. After that, they deployed the same design on 11 different websites.

Our main website is a lead generation website, so its purpose is to acquire new business opportunities. With GEL Studios’ help, we’ve created a user journey to guide users toward the different areas of their interest based on their needs. Our goal is to provide them with the most accurate information about our company as quickly as possible so that they feel encouraged to fill out our contact form.

What is the team composition?

Jamie (Web Developer) acts as our account manager, and we’ve also worked with Graeme (Managing Director). Whenever Jamie is not around, we can work with other team members from GEL Studios who step in to support.

How did you come to work with GEL Studios?

When I joined the company, my manager had already engaged with Graeme. At the time, Graeme was a freelancer; he hadn’t established GEL Studios yet. My manager was looking for an agency that worked with MODX, so he met Graeme at a MODX convention. Graeme was one of the few developers in the UK knowledgeable in MODX, so my manager started working with him. Around two years into the relationship, Graeme created GEL Studios.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in 2014, and our engagement is ongoing. We recently signed a contract with them for 2023.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The websites that GEL Studios has helped us create are performing very well. As most of them have been new websites, we don’t have points of comparison to track increases or progress. Still, we’re very satisfied with the quality of those sites. Moreover, the design they created in 2020 was very good, which is why it was deployed on many websites.

One of the most important features GEL Studios has helped us implement has been the lead generation workflow. This feature has been very important for reducing unqualified leads. Before implementing it, we had our contact forms much more visible, so many users and existing customers filled them out. Now, our forms are in very specific places, so qualified leads fill them out after going through the adequate user journey.

How did GEL Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

From a project management perspective, I have an excellent relationship with GEL Studios, and our communication is very good. We work together on a retainer basis — eight days per month, two days per week. I work very closely with Jamie during those two days every week on our different projects.

We use Active Collab to manage the projects, where I upload tasks and keep track of the progress. Still, we’re in constant communication via chat to ensure that our work runs smoothly. Whenever we need to discuss our projects, we jump on a call. Additionally, their team is great at communicating holidays and days off,

Although I’m not involved in the financial side of our engagement, I know that we recently signed our contract for 2023, so I can say that my company is happy with GEL Studios’ rates.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We work with another agency on web development as well. Compared to them, GEL Studios is very flexible and agile. This other agency doesn’t spend one minute more working with us than the two days our contract says. However, we can always ask GEL Studios to work with us three days on certain weeks or add one hour to a certain day, and they always accommodate our needs.

Additionally, our constant communication is outstanding. Jamie is already aware of the projects we’re working on, so he doesn’t wait on us to put a task in the system because he already knows what to do.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have very good communication and be clear on the brief. Additionally, have an alignment call to ensure everyone is on the same page before starting the project. This will allow you to save time and be efficient.

I am the director of a large childcare company located in Swindon, we have 21 separate locations providing a service for children aged 0-15 years of age.

We engaged Gel Studios to work with us over a two-year period to provide a web page that not only has a clean modern fresh look, but is engaging for parents allowing them to register, book, and pay for our services with ease. In a two-fold approach, Gel are also building an administrative tool within the web page project for the company to bring automation to many tasks.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

As a company, we approached three web page companies to provide a quotation for the work and organized meetings with the individual companies selected to ascertain their approach to completing the work and if we felt that we could work with the people 'fronting' each company.

Our approach was to split into two initial phases, the first being a webpage that was a registration base for parents that enabled them to register and book our holiday sessions. The web page had to be adaptable and easy to update from the user's point of few, in the background the administrative approach would start to work by producing reports and databases. Phase two was the introduction of register production, payment portals, and more automation with 30 percent of the business totally controlled by the web page with the system in place to go totally automated when required to do so. Phase three is the introduction of parent portals and live updates daily to ipads / laptops within all of the units.

On a daily basis, we have worked with two individuals, a project manager and an IT specialist, however, the Gel team is also in the background engaging in different parts of the project.

Gel has met the deadlines that we have agreed upon and excelled in areas by thinking outside of the box to incorporate ideas that we had not envisaged.

We have been happy from the start and are pleased that we have made the right choice with a company to help us implement a total change of approach whilst we modernize.

What was the scope of their involvement?

GEL Studios has been doing web development and branding for us. The branding portion of the project includes creating logos, business cards, social media content, email signatures, and flyers based on my vision. They've also helped with promotional material and SurveyMonkey setup.

For the web development side, they created it from scratch based on my descriptions. I wanted to have a range of services typically found on a website, but I didn't want it to come across in a tacky way and more so in a friendly and approachable manner. I wanted to talk to the customer in a language that they understood rather than go over their heads.

Regarding technologies, they've used MODX, a CMS software similar to WordPress that allows creating the web page using Adobe products. For the designing and branding, I believe they used Adobe products. Other than that, I am not sure what they used.

Additionally, they've also provided hosting and maintenance for the website.

I have worked with 4–5 members of their team, including their owner, a creative director, and two art directors.

I researched various local options but chose GEL Studios because they fit my budget, and I was very impressed from the get-go. They seemed fresh, approachable, and friendly and did what I wanted them to do by taking my ideas on board.

I am the Digital Marketing Manager at Thames Hospice, a charity based in Berkshire. Thames Hospice is a leading UK Hospice providing inpatient and community palliative and end-of-life care services to people aged 16 and over across East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire.

We appointed Gel Studios in January 2021 on a monthly retainer contract for web development support and hosting, and to build a brand new website. We had outgrown our current website and web developer, and do not have an in-house team. The website had become outdated with a clunky user experience. We required Gel Studios to develop a new website using our existing Modx platform, which aligned to the expansion of our organisation, with a fresh revamped look within our strong brand to coincide with the opening of our new premises.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Gel Studios were recommended by our existing freelance web developer. We needed an agency which specialised in using Modx. We also shortlisted another 4 agencies from online research. After conducting interviews with all 5 agencies we appointed Gel Studios as were impressed with their expertise, experience and their competitive prices for us as a non-profit.

We had an initial kick-off meeting to discuss the goals and objectives of our new website project. We assessed the key content areas that we required from our diverse web users, and using existing analytics from our old site. From there Gel Studios delivered a menu structure, mock-ups and wireframes for the design of the site and to map out the user journey. Working together we amended these until we had the right design and structure in place. The pages were then infilled with content from us and the team at Gel Studios.

We also required a fully integrated online shop setting up using Stripe payment processing, a secure job application portal, and a number of donation forms which were integrated with Donorfy using their API so they could handle data collection and process payments using Stripe or GoCardless. We then set up a rolling monthly retainer for ongoing web development and digital marketing support.

The Managing Director was our first initial point of contact, and our relationship was then managed with the team's Client Director. Our key points of contact within the team was the creative director for the design of the site and the dev team lead for the development. Since then we have worked with the majority of the team in design, development and digital marketing.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The new website was delivered professionally, within budget and on time, with a seamless crossover from our old side. They have added huge value to our digital activities. In the first year of launching our new website we noticed a 5% increase in new users, with an increase in sessions and pages. The simple contact form developed on the site has resulted in a large increase in online enquiries, furniture collection requests and fundraising enquiries. The e-commerce interface has improved

Communication between Gel Studios is excellent. During the initial stages of the project we had regular video conferences with the team who were designing and developing the site, so that they could walk us through their progress and we could discuss in real time our thoughts and amends. The whole team always respond in a timely manner and will always strive to respond to any urgent communications. Gel Studios used Active Collab to manage projects and it is a great planning tool to manage our monthly retainer, raise any discussions and request support.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The whole team are experts in what they do. They are a great bunch of people to work with, it is easy to form a great working relationship with the team which makes working together effortless. They are very responsive to our needs and will always strive to answer any of our demands or requests. Every person at GEL Studios was passionate about what they did, which was reflected in their work.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There were some very minor teething problems when the site was first launched, which were all dealt with in a timely and professional manner. The integration with Donorfy was not as seamless as first expected, but Nate the dev team lead at Gel Studios has been committed to improving this process and has dedicated much of his time and resource in improving this integration to reduce our admin time, and create a smooth process.

I am the owner of a Private Recruitment Consultancy, placing nannies in London and worldwide.

For what projects/services did your company hire GEL Studios, and what were your goals?

As a new business, we were starting completely from scratch. GEL updated our logo, designed and produced a beautiful website that we could update, with details for our clients of the nannies we have seeking new positions, and for our nannies a job page that detailed all the live jobs we are working on. They created an easy to navigate and minimalistic website that suited our needs. They also designed social media templates and letterheads for our correspondence.

We contacted a number of businesses offering web development, however they just didn't get us as a brand. They were all a bit stuffy and corporate, which isn't us at all. GEL was introduced to us by a friend and once we took a look at the work that they had already produced we decided to engage with them and see what they could do for us..

We had an initial meeting to discuss our requirements and GEL discussed what they could do for us, detailing the process in their Client Service Agreement. This demonstrated to us in writing the process and the timeframe in which everything would be complete. It also gave us an idea of the input we had do give and at what stage.

We sent over some initial information such as rough idea of sitemap, logo, any branding colours that we had in mind already. Once everything was agreed we discussed a timeframe that worked well for everyone. We had a face to face scoping meeting where we discussed with their Creative Director and their Designer what we wanted the look and feel of the website to be, number of pages and the type of content that would be included (forms/blog like, we discussed likes and dislikes of other websites and competitors.

It was a pretty in-depth discussion and GEL got a good feel for us as a business. They then went to work to put everything we had discussed into wireframes, they gave us access to a project management software and shared individual pages, the design and layout and we went back and forth with any changes we wanted to make, if i'm honest they got it pretty spot on and we didn't make many changes. They also updated us on where in the project we were and what they were working on every step of the way.

Once the wireframes were complete it was onto development. GEL use MODX CMS and their brilliant web designers created our website ahead of the estimated completion date!

We liaised with a number of people, from initial contact with Katie the client director, to Carly the Creative Director and Elisha the Designer. We didn't meet with the designers but after launch we worked with Lewis their Digital Marketing Manager and Max the Digital Marketing Assistant.

This was the 1st website for our business, we initially had many compliments about the look of the website and the ease of navigation. This was a massive thing for us as we know that when looking for a job, getting to that job page with as minimal clicks as possible and filtering to requirements is paramount and GEL really delivered.

GEL used ActiveCollab project management software to communicate with us which was great. If there were any updates we would have a notification, if we wanted to add any further work or projects we could notify the relevant member of the team and replies were swift.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We were impressed with the information that was given, the initial Client service agreement was very informative. It documented timelines, their roles at certain times and also our responsibilities throughout the project. Any questions we had while inputing the content was answered in full and with screenshots of 'how to's' which were really easy to follow.

None that spring to mind. Although this is the 1st time we have developed a website so have nothing to base it on.

We found Gel after looking at other similar organisations and we feel that they offered the best service and support along with value for money.

Whole site design, with the community having the ability to vote on projects, and a range of options such as blogs, access to documents and the ability to make applications for funding etc.

We have had a very successful site which attracted many visitors but was simple to connect with and use. very happy with the responses achieved.
