We asked Focus Reactive to redesign an existing e-commerce site to be easier to use for customers, and capable of scaling to large content delivery. As a company of mostly designers, we collaborated on Figma and other platforms that helped us create design, while Focus Reactive did the hard work of building the the product. The platforms they suggested proved to be very successful in our collaborations efforts. They performed an initial investigation on our old website, made recommendations, and gave us a timeline on final delivery.

The project was completed on time. In fact, we added additional tasks to the original list, but Focus Reactive fit them inside the schedule. Upon presenting to our wider team, everyone felt the site was much better looking, more intuitive, and built for expansion.

Beyond that traffic, audience and conversion are the core metrics that we use across the business and the month on month growth is critical to see during the early stages of the project to determine success.

They are a partner of the selected headless CMS we picked. We picked FocusReactive over other partners because of their no-nonsense approach, technical know-how, experience and price.

- A new website that is 5 times faster, while being 20 times bigger regarding content and functionalities, than the old websites.

They don't loose themselves in planning or presentations. They are down-to-earth and want to get things done - and they delivered.

The lines are short and personal/social while always to the point: not to waste time/resources. We use Slack for daily communication, have one weekly team standup on video and use a Trello board for backlog planning.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

A lot of companies have layers of sales on top of them and if you don't plan in advance, you cannot get the resources needed. FocusReactive ensures that you are never blocked because they will prioritise for you. They are very professional while they are down-to-earth and social enough to have a laugh with. I really see them as part of the team and not a supplier of resources.

Secret Escapes is a British travel e-commerce selling heavily discounted High-end hotel stays and holidays through its website and apps. My role in the company is Design lead and Design system manager. I am taking care of the design, process and delivery of our Design system called Voyager and work closely with our front-end engineers to ensure consistency and integrity of our Design system.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire FocusReactive, and what were your goals?

We lacked front-end resources to deliver our REACT JS component library to enable the integration of our Design system.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We needed an agency specialised in front-end technologies with experience in delivering design systems. The final call was made by the CTO based on communication and price.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

We previously worked for six months with Focus Reactive on server-side rendering and integration pieces where their engineers were fully integrated within the team. The Blast project being much more narrow in scope, we opted for a simple delivery strategy for this part as it didn't require the same level of involvement on technical decisions from Focus Reactive. The Blast consisted in delivering all the components required to decouple our front-end from our monolithic application using REACT JS.

The requirement was to deliver around 90% of all the components and make them visible in our Storybook library. We started off with a simple kick off, sharing the ways of working and all the informations required for the agency to start the work. The components were divided following the Atomic Design methodology, starting with the most simple ones (Atoms).

I provided the engineers with Jira tickets for each components, describing the requirements (variations and props) and links to the component design (in Figma). Jira tickets were moved accordingly to the correct swim-lane (To do / In progress / Blocked / In review / Ready for release / Done) to allow me to keep track of the delivery. We also had a timesheet and a component delivery tracker in place that allow me to report on time spent and progress to the senior stakeholders.

We had two part time (50%) front-end engineers working with us for six months.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

In almost 6 month the agency delivered around 150 components (inc. updates on existing ones) and brought the whole project completion from 50% to 96%, which exceeded the business expectations.

Focus Reactive are very independent and goal driven. You give them a task and they will deliver to the best of their knowledge asking questions along to way to avoid wild assumptions. We mostly communicated through Slack and only meetings when required, usually to clarify the specs. We had a few check ups to discuss on how to improve our collaboration and assess our progress.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They were very efficient and trustworthy. With an engineer working on the project being based in Kiev during the Russian invasion, it has been a challenging period for Focus Reactive, but even in these dire circumstances - they unexpectedly carried on the work and we went through this period incredibly smoothly. This is dedication!

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Secret Escapes loves meetings, which sometimes gets in the way of delivery due to context switching. It is necessary to recognise which ones are relevant and which ones are not. Being invited by various people to a bunch of meetings, they tried to join them all and it took a while for Focus Reactive to voice their unhappiness about the situation. This was particularly relevant to the first part of the project and I believe we found the right balance during the second part. Setting clear expectations in terms of involvement from the start would have been beneficial.
