We selected them due to feeling like they weren't totally 'offshore' and that we felt we could trust them with advanced communication.

We started with an idea phase, and then went into R&D of several different things. Since this was utilizing eSign and other technologies, we had to make sure it was all working properly with signing certificates.

We had a team assigned to us, with a Product Manager. I am not sure how many people specifically. We spoke with 3 people.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

I would say the project was a really great success. We ended up being acquired by a larger company, which they also assisted with Due Diligence on the code base.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

They integrated perfectly into our existing workflow (slack, asana, etc) and it seemed like they were just part of our team.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The fact that they are willing to communicate so readily and always make themselves available were amazing.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Not at this time.

RedTeam is a suite of construction software built for contractors by contractors. RedTeam's collaboration tools allows for real-time access to project information, keeping your team up to date, no matter where you are.

I am the new Sr. Marketing Project Manager (started in August) and the rebrand of RedTeam as well as the launch and redesign of the website were my responsibilities.

For what projects/services did your company hire Codebuddy Pvt. Ltd., and what were your goals?

We needed to pull off a miracle. We need a design and dev agency to completely redesign and rebuild our website. We were lucky enough to get CodeBuddy to agree to do the latter.

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

The VP of Marketing and I had the pleasure of working with CodeBuddy at a previous company after being referred by a colleague that has used CodeBuddy for a long time. We knew only CodeBuddy and our design agency could pull off executing a brand new site within 2.5 months. Many other agencies we spoke to quoted no less than six months and at a much higher cost.

When I started here at RedTeam, the VP of Marketing had only started a few weeks before me but had already engaged CodeBuddy and were meeting regularly with the design agency. Designs were being built for both mobile and web, and development was running in tandem. At the same time copy was being written and vetted; images were being selected, purchased and edited.

CodeBuddy was able to convert design files into html and then implement them in WordPress on their dev environment, ensuring best practices and compatibility with our existing infrastructure. From there it was pushed to our staging environment where CodeBuddy created functionality, pages, navigation and templates to allow me to edit and implement content. The site went live 10/13/22.

From there were triaged bugs and feedback and continue to add new pages and posts as well as redesign existing content and add additional functionality.

Sudipta Bhowmick, the CTO and director has always been my main point of contact.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We have gotten nothing but positive feedback in terms of the look, content, and improvements of the new site. The statistics are still minimal but bounce rates and average time on the site has improved.

With the new functionalities CodeBuddy is adding as we go, the ability for me to make new content and pages, or make a good amount of edits myself has allowed for quick updates.

CodeBuddy's turnaround times for things I am not yet able to do myself take no more than 1-2 days if not sooner. They are always willing to jump on a virtual meeting when needed and now we are moving to Slack rather than relying on email. All CodeBuddy members I have worked with are polite, knowledgeable and responsive.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They are always willing to help or provide a solution and quickly. More than once there's been a list of items that need addressing and I wake up the next morning and they've been "magically" resolved.

That's truly impressive. I know they must have a ton of clients but they never make me feel like a low priority or that something else is more important and I truly appreciate that.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Perhaps follow up, and a bit more QA and attention to detail, but honestly there isn't much to improve. I know I tend to check up on things (as a project manager) faster than someone would be able to get back to me. :)

We went from conceptualization to launch in 2 months which was an extremely tight time table given the size of the project and the amount of data that had to be migrated to the new system.

The project management was very good considering I have never managed a project of the scope before. Each weeks objectives were clearly laid out and discussed and our weekly team meetings. Any changes or alterations to the plan were discussed in a timely manner and were always quickly followed up with an expected deliverable date.

I really appreciated that this team had their own project manager. I appreciated the suggestions they made to optimize our system as they were building it.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Having never managed a project like this before, there was a miscommunication around the data migration causing some unmet expectations. We were able to work through those issues and greatly improved our communication moving forward.

It took 2-3 review cycles until we freeze on the designs. Post that, they started delivering pieces on sprint by sprint and finally it took about 5 months, little bit more than we expected.

But that is fine, we made certain changes in requirement during the development phase. They have incorporated the changes without asking second question.

I’m the owner of Vendor Bridge, and we’re a platform that connects events organizers and vendors such as food truck operators into one marketplace. When events are posted on our website, our automated email system will send notifications to all our users.

What challenge were you trying to address with Codebuddy Pvt. Ltd.?

We needed someone to build our platform and help us with front- and backend development, UX/UI design, graphics, and color. I had the idea, experience, and vision, and I needed someone to go through every part with me and turn my concept into a fully operational business. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Right off the bat, we did a discovery meeting to figure out my expectations. I explained what I was looking for and all the features I wanted to add to the platform. Codebuddy prepared a rough blueprint and timeline of everything that we’d be going through. After that, we reviewed some mockups of what the platform would look like and evaluated color schemes, button locations, and other aspects. 

Codebuddy then proceeded to develop the platform. They made an admin panel that allowed me to manage the website. Their team also worked on dashboards for the profile creation of vendors and event organizers. We also added a review system that allowed users to leave a review after they create their profiles. I’m able to see those reviews, and we made changes if certain functionalities weren’t working.

We checked if anything needed fixes or edits, we polished the language, and we thought of other add-ons that might help both vendors and organizers.

We used Google Analytics as well as DigitalOcean for the servers’ hosting. Codebuddy also included an integration for Facebook and Instagram. I have minimal knowledge of such applications, but they were all recommended by Codebuddy as the best to use. 

I created a couple of documents, including a spider web of the user flow to illustrate how I wanted the whole system to work. I also outlined the benefits of using our platform for vendors and organizers. Additionally, I provided images, color schemes, logos, and other assets. 

What is the team composition?

I spoke directly with one teammate, and he handled everything. However, there were at least four different people who supported our project and joined our meetings. 

How did you come to work with Codebuddy Pvt. Ltd.?

Originally, I had a developer based here in Calgary, but they were extremely expensive, and they weren’t exactly what I was looking for. I felt I was losing grip on my project, so I decided to look for offshore service providers. I interviewed a few different developers.

I encountered Codebuddy from my post on Upwork. They stood out because of the effort they put in their bid; they presented a whole plan. I was keeping a budget, and they priced out everything for me right at the beginning. At one point, I wanted to have a mobile app, and I could see from their proposal how much that will cost. It was up to me if I was going to include a feature, and even if I didn’t want at that point, I understood its cost. 

After seeing their bid and speaking with them, there was no doubt in my mind that Codebuddy was the best candidate. However, we went through a probation period to see how well we could work together.

I have paid them around $6,000 through Upwork. 

What is the status of this engagement?

Our engagement lasted from June 2020–May 2021.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We had only launched three weeks ago, and we already have more than 80 vendors and organizers on board. The website had received good feedback from our users. Codebuddy was instrumental in our company’s success.

How did Codebuddy Pvt. Ltd. perform from a project management standpoint?

Codebuddy was excellent at project management, communication, and timelines. When I wanted to make changes, Codebuddy handled everything, from uploading to the host to figuring out the servers and analytics. I had asked them a few out-of-the-box questions and tasks, and they hadn’t hesitated in anything. They were passionate about our business. 

We communicated within Upwork, but we used Google Docs to make edits and changes on the website. We also used Zoom and Google Meets for screen-sharing. Codebuddy’s English skills were excellent, which was helpful since I had communication issues with other vendors before. 

Codebuddy was extremely easy to work with and very professional. As a business owner, I don’t have much time to spend on communication, and they were always direct to the point. Overall, I was truly impressed with everything. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

Codebuddy was very passionate about the project, and they were very timely. They exceeded my expectations for a developer, considering I had worked with several developers in the past. Codebuddy studied our industry more comprehensively than I anticipated. I was really impressed because there were a lot of things to look over, yet they dove in and understood our market. This helped to make the project way easier. 

Additionally, Codebuddy was able to use my ideas and transform them into a working platform, and they also helped me get past roadblocks whenever we encountered one.

Are there any areas they could improve?

When a vendor was creating their profile, everything that they did had to be auto-filled in the boxes. If it said “enter email,” all of that information was preloaded with some wording in it. That was a bit of an annoyance because I had to go through and change a lot of its language. However, it only took me two seconds to take the screenshot, write the edits, and send it to Codebuddy — it was changed the next day. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be very exact with what you’re looking for, and when you’re describing something that you want to change, describe it the way you want it to be done. We had a few instances when I told them I needed something changed, but I never really outlined what I was looking for. If I didn’t explain what I was looking for and left it up to them, the changes that came out weren’t exactly satisfactory for me.

Additionally, have an idea of the user flow. That helped a lot with the efficiency of our project and did wonders as a reference for them to go back and look at. Also, have your branding — color schemes, images, and sales funnels — done before you collaborate with them, so they can use those as a resource in creating your website.

I don’t have any metrics yet, but anecdotally they’re very good at getting things done. I feel like I have found my development team for the next 30 years; they’re my one-stop-shop. They have everything in-house, from design to development. They know all the languages. They’re a young, creative, up-and-coming team building their business, and I’m glad I found them.

Give them a to-do list, and you can expect them to get it done. For example, you can tell them, "these are 10 things I want to get done," and then sit back. Don’t micromanage them because they can manage themselves. They’re hustlers and hard-working people.
