We needed to develop a niche insurance platform. The client’s solution was 15 years old, and it was using older technologies like Access. The big goal for the company was to get away from the on-premises app they were using.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Wings Tech Solutions developed an internal web platform, and they’ve been supporting it for the last five years. It runs from a server within company premises.

We rewrote it from scratch as a full-scale web application. We’ve enhanced it over the years with features such as online customer transactions and a mobile component. 

We’re using cloud-hosted servers and a MySQL database, and the application was written in AngularJS. There is a middleware component between the database and the application, and we’ve written APIs that help us connect to mobile apps and third-party applications.

They assigned two developers and a project manager. They pulled in other people as needed.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Wings Tech Solutions in May 2014, and we launched the first version around six months later. There was a second phase that took about three months. We still support the product, and we work with two people from Wings Tech Solutions on upgrades and fixes.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

About 40 people use the business system every day, from finance to product and customer service people. The insurance system has about 100,000 members, and 3,000–4,000 people log in every day to check their policies, submit requests, and more. There are monthly payments and insurance claims occurring online every day.

The client is still working with us, so they obviously like the relationship and the work we’re doing in collaboration with Wings Tech Solutions.

We use Slack for everything. We use Google Docs to share requirements and task lists based on feedback and issues. We continue to run mini-projects improving functionalities, and we also have a defect log. It’s a small team, so we don’t need dedicated project tools, but this is a significant product that an entire business runs on.

What did you find most impressive about them?

There are lots of people in a typical company’s chain of command, but we didn’t get that with Wings Tech Solutions. Wings Tech Solutions is a lean and talented team, and they’re the ones doing the work, like writing code or solving problems.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It’s hard to mention anything they haven’t done well. I’ve worked with them on projects for other clients, and I like the fact that they don’t have rigid processes. They’ve been flexible to learn new processes.

The initial task for us centered around website development. They built our platform from scratch and based the iterations on our brainstorming efforts and functionality and design preferences. I specifically wanted them to focus on optimizing its UX by giving our customers options for seamless payment methods. Over the course of the development process, they created five iterations to apply panel and design changes.As for our branding pipeline, we tasked wings tech solutions to generate brand strategies that mirrored the mission and vision of our family business. Their team also conducted thorough research to determine which industry-specific strategies worked best to get the word out about our company. Wings tech solutions then proceeded with designing our logo based on the color scheme they chose for us. Additionally, their team came up with our tagline, which we still use on our website to date.Wings tech solutions currently performs web hosting-related tasks for us. They update our site content on a quarterly basis and put up new web links for our customers when necessary.

The project's success is evident in several ways. The software was delivered on time and functions exactly as intended. Beta testers, including friends and family, found it intuitive, engaging, and easy to use. We received feedback that the app is “addictive” in a positive sense and well-designed, which validated our vision. Overall, the app met our goals for usability, functionality, and performance, giving us a strong foundation for future growth.

While we don't have large-scale public metrics yet, early testing showed strong engagement and usability. Beta testers reported that they used the app frequently and found it intuitive and fun. Feedback from testers with prior app experience confirmed that the interface and functionality were solid and easy to navigate. The app performs reliably, with smooth loading times, seamless messaging, and accurate money transfers, demonstrating that the core features are stable and effective.

I primarily worked with the project manager, who kept me updated on progress and coordinated efficiently with the development team. Wings Tech Solutions played an essential role as our staff augmentation partner. They helped us source all the necessary roles for our development team, including developers, architects, and testers. The project began with a challenge we received very little documentation from the previous team, and the app suffered from a range of issues, including poor code quality. Despite these challenges, Wings Tech Solutions took on the task of modernizing the app. They worked on both the frontend and backend, enhancing the app’s architecture, and significantly improved the documentation, bringing it to a level that met our needs.

The app is a PHP web application that supports every stage of the fiberglass rollout workflow, from data collection to meeting scheduling for contractors. It also enables efficient assignment of resources to contractors based on skill and location.
