Build our web application from scratch. We provided screen mockups and user stories for them to build a front-end and the back-end database, as well as the necessary procedures and functions to work with the data (input and output). We use AWS for hosting our application. 

They were tasked with implementing a complex security matrix to handle our specific access requirements for the various types of users who are on our System. Third-party widgets were integrated into our GUI. Stripe was integrated into our online sales process. Acceptance test cases were added to the app's build to ensure code was not faulty.

The measurable outcomes were the completion and verification of User stories we provided to our Syntech team.

We were assigned a Project Manager who would attend each weekly call and is someone we could rely on to pass messages along to the dev team as well as being the conduit for communication between us and Syntech Management. We did not have strict timelines for the work we needed done. We simply provided the User Stories as we could create them and they built it. 

We mostly used a chatting app to stay in close communication with our Dev team. They were very responsive to our requests that we sent through the chat app and by email. Even for emergency situations, they were able to respond as promptly as possible (they are almost half-way around the world from us).

What was impressive was the speed in which they mobilized a team for us and they were quite knowledgeable and skilled at their jobs.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Syntech Software built our entire website and CMS integrations towards our backend data transfer software using Django. They’ve also done UX design for our internal and external systems.

To jumpstart the project, we provided them with prior documentation, but we also described our issues to them, and they helped us formulate the idea we had into concrete wireframes and documents.

Our customers love the experience that our platforms offer. Also, I’m delighted with how they understand my requirements and go one step further to deliver what I’m looking for — they even take ownership of the problems that arise and fix them.

Project management is great; they communicate any change on the timelines and are very agile in adapting to my changes. Regarding tools, we use Slack and Jira.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re wise and have expertise in their area, which enables them to help me with what I need. In addition, they’re a friendly team, so I feel comfortable being honest and open-minded with them. Overall, I haven’t felt this trustworthy and close relationship with other companies.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t think there’s anything they can improve on — I’m happy with their work and stand out from their competitors.

We found them on Upwork, where we searched for software developers. They were the best out of all the people that we spoke with, and they addressed our immediate needs, so we went ahead with the engagement.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

As we’ve grown as a company, Syntech has become an extended part of our business. They’ve formed a bit of our development team, and we work with them on a full-time basis as opposed to an agency setup.

How did Syntech Software perform from a project management standpoint?

They have good communication, and they’re responsive. We work on sprint deliverables, and Syntech has been very good at meeting the deadlines that we’ve set.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their communication and responsiveness are their most impressive quality. They’re willing to go above and beyond whatever we need, and they have very high-level skills. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, there aren’t any. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Set up your development plan and ensure that Syntech has available resources to implement that plan. On top of that, manage expectations on both sides because software development is a tricky process. If you have a non-technical background, the Syntech team is also very good at explaining technical things in an easy way, so all you have to do is set your expectations with their deliverables.

What challenge were you trying to address with Syntech Software?

We had an outdated website that had to be redone completely. This included web design and the creation of hundreds of new pages.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Syntech designed and developed our website in WordPress, using the Astra template. We have a lot of custom pages, which required them to modify the PHP code. They also worked with our marketing department to adapt the template to our SEO needs.

What is the team composition?

We worked with one manager, one designer, two developers, and a QA tester.

How did you come to work with Syntech Software?

One of their managers lived in Odessa, and we’d known him directly for 3–4 years. There’s a small IT community in our city. Syntech was the first company we asked for help and we made an agreement.

How much have you invested with them?

The whole scope was $27,000. The design cost $8,000, and the rest was for development, QA, and management.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Syntech in July 2020, and we finished in late-October or early-November 2020.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

From what I understood, they didn’t have a lot of experience working with WordPress, and the initial designs they made were really similar to the basic template. I thought that the project wouldn’t be successful at that point, but, fortunately, they understood what we wanted and created new designs. We told them to not look at the template and to create a completely new design for us, and this approach worked.

How did Syntech Software perform from a project management standpoint?

They delivered fast; we were more relaxed, and they had to push us. I believe we had meetings twice a week. We tried using Skype, but it’s a bit outdated, so we switched to Zoom for video calls. We used Telegram for messaging and Jira for task management as well.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I was afraid that we may not agree on the design, but Syntech’s managers calmed me down. They found the right words to continue the project when I was ready to cancel it, looking at the task from a new point of view. They changed the design really quickly and made what we needed. I really enjoyed the personal attention and the way Syntech communicated with us.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

We had a misunderstanding about the template work, so my advice is to specify tasks in as much detail as possible.

I am the CEO and founder of Ugo. We are a finance company that does unsecured, nonconforming finance. I am based out of NYC, but we have offices in Australia as well.

What challenge were you trying to address with Syntech Software?

We’d developed a web app, but it needed more development.  We were looking to lower the cost of our web development. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The team integrated the frontend of a web app with the financial database that we use. The JavaScript React web app processes loan applications.

They took over the web app development from another developer. There were a lot of APIs to create and integrate, and the project required a lot of changes to the UI.

In the beginning, we provided a one-or two-page description of the technical details about how to install the machine and set up the operating environment.

Inside the app, the client fills in their personal details and uploads documents. After they fill in their banking details, the app connects through a third-party to their bank account data. The app analyzes it and then feeds it into our financial database.

Then, the financial database sends back a response and processes the loan application. In the end, it will display the client’s account details. 

There is a secure area where they can log in and see certain information about their accounts. Using the web app, they can communicate with us as well as upload documents.

I worked directly with the account manager. 

How did you come to work with Syntech Software?

I was trying to find a company that would match our needs in terms of quality and budget. Eventually, I came across Syntech and they seemed like a nice size for us. (I don’t know how many developers they have exactly, but it might be under 20.) 

We had a relatively small project. So, we needed the stability of a company at least their size. 

Also, they had experience doing technical work, and they’d done some good work with visual identities. Technically there was no question as they have very strong technical skills.

Their rates were significantly less than what I had been paying other companies, so it made sense to hire them.

How much have you invested in them?

We have spent about $30,000 to $40,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working with them in October of 2018, and the work took about six months. We spent another three months on updates, but in the last three months, we’ve only worked on the server administrator side.

We have been scoping out the second phase, and we will probably start new work with them in the next few months.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The solution they built is extremely successful. Since we launched the app, we are at capacity. While they didn’t design it or market it, they did build it. They deserve quite a bit of credit for that.

Since launching the app, our business is growing at about 15% per month. (This is an existing business that had been declining by 5% per month for five years.) So, this is a substantial increase.

After the launch, we discovered that 90% of users were accessing the solution through a mobile device, and we thought it would be more like 30%. Syntech was very good at adapting to that and quickly making the changes that we needed.

How did Syntech Software perform from a project management standpoint?

Their project management was good enough — it wasn’t a problem. I’m happy with their English.

The account manager I work with isn’t a technical guy, but for an account manager, he is very, very good. He’s better than most account managers I have dealt with.

He takes a lot of interest in the project and coordinates very well with the developers. I talk with him when things are a little more complicated. In return, he talks with me to get a sense of the volume of upcoming work so their team can plan resources accordingly.

We used Skype and zipBoard (a task management website for developers). I post my tasks there along with screenshots and instructions. Through that interface, I can ask questions and send messages back-and-forth.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They are very communicative. In particular, they’re very straightforward and open about the project’s progress. We can contact them anytime and they will tell us exactly what they’re working on. They’re very good communicators — this gave me a lot of confidence about working with them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

In the beginning, Syntech jumped in and started working. There wasn’t a lot of scoping of the project and mapping it out.

I think they could have documented a lot more of the work so that it could be taken over by another developer if needed. (However, the documentation and planning might have been an additional cost that I might not have wanted to spend.)

It was a little bit haphazard in the beginning, but we got into a good process flow. Since then, it has been very efficient. I think they do what they promise and do it very well.

NAV-TV Corp is located in Coral Springs, South Florida. We're the largest automotive aftermarket accessory manufacturer and developer.

What challenge were you trying to address with Syntech?

We decided to upgrade our online presence in 2013. We started collaborating with Syntech then.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

I came up with a set of requirements at the technical level. It's a completely custom platform. Everything was written from scratch, based on our requirements. The process was multistage, starting with a basic product catalog for our company. They implemented that, which eventually became our web shop. After that, they implemented custom support for ticketing and return merchandise authorization (RMA). We added another level of functionality beyond that.

My initial requirements included using Python Django, Java, and Ajax for the core of the website and other functionalities. We integrated it with a QuickBooks database through a plug-in, and used Node.js for the mobile application. They also implemented a couple of projects based on C#.

What is the team composition?

They were quite transparent in this regard. We're an ISO-9001 company and require a lot of information about partners’ processes, in order to ensure that they are fully integrated with ours.

We have a project manager on their side and worked with 3–5 developers from their team. At its peak, we had close to three developers working on the project.

How did you come to work with Syntech?

I found them on Freelancer.com while looking for a proper web developer to satisfy my strict requirements. I spent almost two weeks going through all the proposals until I came across Syntech. We’ve been partners ever since.

We started working with them in 2013. The bulk of our initial project has been done—the core website and web shop functionality. We're now working on a second aspect of this, namely remote technical support.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’ve been working together for close to five years and I have nothing but positive things to say about Syntech. We currently have a very strong web presence. We're the end-user of the website and have received a lot of positive feedback.

There was a lot of thought put into the specifications regarding fraud prevention. Unfortunately, we’ve been the victim of numerous fraudulent transactions on the previous website, which led to us stopping web orders in 2012. We resumed web that service on the new website in 2013, and since then, 15-20% of our orders have come from it.

How did Syntech perform from a project management standpoint?

We're using Slack, Skype, Facetime, and phone text messaging for communication. I have direct contact with them and am able to get hold of the team at any point during day or night if there are issues.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Our previous partners didn’t last for very long. They didn’t manage to deliver on time or per the specifications. The great thing about Syntech is that they deliver on time and per the specifications. For us, this is the main goal—it’s the indication of a successful partnership.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could improve their conversational and documentation English skills. Being from Ukraine, I know there’s been a learning curve for them, but they're getting better with time. I now need to do fewer and fewer spellchecks on their work, but there's still room for improvement.

What challenge were you trying to address with Syntech Software?

I’m a professional investor myself — I invest a lot of my funds into equity markets and different investments, and keeping track of everything has been notoriously difficult. I wanted to build a platform that could help people understand the overall view of their portfolio in relation to the wider markets and help them take control of their financial clout.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We hired Syntech to develop an investment management platform. We started the engagement with a discovery phase, wherein we worked together to understand the scope of what we wanted to build. We also looked at our competitors to see how they were doing in the market as well as the kind of features and designs that their products have.

After that, we worked with Syntech Software to design the platform’s color scheme and build its algorithm. They also built a landing page for us. They then created a dashboard, which allowed users to plug-in to the current brokers in the UK market.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The platform is not yet live, but it is functioning as we expected. Additionally, because I run my own investor group, I can get our members to test the product. Syntech Software has been actively participating in this phase as well — they have been joining our calls and talking to our members to get feedback on the solution.

Moreover, Syntech Software actually mitigated the cost by understanding what we wanted. They provided us with different options to ensure that we got what we wanted in the most cost-effective way.

How did Syntech Software perform from a project management standpoint?

Syntech Software has been highly engaged throughout the project. They always make sure to check in with me and provide me with updates every step of the way. They’re always enthusiastic and on top of everything.

However, the best thing about Syntech Software’s project management is their project manager’s ability to understand the technical side of the project. He understands exactly what I want, and he knows exactly how to relay that information to their developers.

We typically communicate via Skype. We have weekly meetings to make sure that we’re on the same page.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most impressed with Syntech Software’s exceptional communication and strong project ownership. I really appreciate how they treat our business like it’s theirs.

I think Syntech Software could improve on their ability to scale. They need to make sure that they have enough developers to cover all of their projects.
