VP of Technology, Nonprofit Organization

- Review Type: Phone Interview

**The Review** — Sep 21, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: SynapseIndia delivered a quality product, allowing the client to have a centralized business management system for the first time. The team was responsive, collaborative, and flexible. Additionally, they facilitated open conversations to understand and meet the client’s goals and expectations.
"“They always strived to understand our business needs to meet them.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the VP of technology at a nonprofit organization for entrepreneurs. We’re a member-based organization with multiple chapters all over the world, and we create learning events for our members.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We needed help with developing a Microsoft Dynamics integration and a web-facing frontend with SharePoint.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, SynapseIndia helped us create over 350 pages of documentation on how to build the new system, after which they started the development process. We had a pretty tight deadline considering the size of the project, and SynapseIndia delivered the system within a year. Once it was up and running, they started providing us with maintenance services.

Among other functionalities, this system helped us with chapter management, lead nurture management, event registration, and other big areas of our business. The technology stack included Microsoft Dynamics 2011 for the database and Microsoft SharePoint 2013 for the web frontend.

What is the team composition?

The project took place many years ago, so I don’t remember how many people were involved.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

We launched an official RFP process, and SynapseIndia was very competitive in their bidding.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in 2014 and delivered the product around September 2015. We’re still using the product to date, and they provide us with support when needed.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

SynapseIndia delivered a quality product for us. Thanks to this system, we had a very tight-knit collection of data and core processes hosted in one place for the first time. At the time, the system met our expectations, and to this date, it still works as intended. However, that technology is aging, so we’ve started seeing more problems with the servers.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

SynapseIndia’s project management was good. Their team was very responsive, and we established a very close working relationship. We primarily communicated via video calls.

What did you find most impressive about them?

SynapseIndia adapted their schedule to meet our needs, which was great. Additionally, we had great and open conversations about what we needed to configure and develop, and they always strived to understand our business needs to meet them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be open and upfront about what you want, and ask the questions you feel are important to ask.

**Feedback Summary**: The website that SynapseIndia developed has contributed to a total increase in traffic to the organization’s site. As an ongoing partner, they continue to dedicate a thorough and professional team that understands the client’s needs. The website has received rave reviews from the client’s members.
"“They often come to us with creative ideas and solutions; it is a really good partnership.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I’m the chapter director for The Young Presidents Organization (YPO) in Indianapolis, Indiana. This project was for the organization’s wine network.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We wanted to build a website for our YPO wine network but needed web development support. The goal was to create a site where our members could go to order wine through vineyards owned by other members.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

We shared our vision, and then they gathered additional information from us to move forward with the project. They built the website from scratch using WordPress, which has WooCommerce functionality. They also host the site for us, so the partnership is ongoing.

What is the team composition?

I worked with 3–4 people, mostly the owner and a web designer.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

We found them through a referral.

How much have you invested with them?

We have spent around $30,000 with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in April 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They have definitely helped us increase traffic to the website. The project has turned out great, and we’ve been getting rave reviews from our members.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

They are very thorough when obtaining information, always sharing constructive criticism regarding our ask. They often come to us with creative ideas and solutions; it is a really good partnership.

They performed well in terms of project management and were very professional. They met our deadlines and stayed on budget. We typically use email to communicate due to the time difference.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their ability to get the job done without any excuses is most impressive. I can’t say anything bad about them; they’re great to work with.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I can’t think of anything they could improve on; I just wish they were local.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

My advice would be to listen to what they have to say because they have great ideas.

General Manager, Steve Madden
- Industry: Retail

- Client size: 1,001-5,000 Employees
- Review Type: Phone Interview
- Verified

**The Review** — May 31, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: The provided websites — totaling more than six to date — perform well and have met all expectations. They are a highly organized and transparent vendor, with multiple communication touch points and team leaders. Their large pool of resources allows them to tackle a diverse range of product topics.
""I find them to be pretty awesome as a team, and I would definitely recommend them." "

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I am a project manager for Steve Madden responsible for mostly frontend project management work. We're a shoe, handbag, and accessories company in the United States that operates about 40 websites around the world. Our main one is Steve Madden US, and there are a couple of brands based in the US, but then there is Steve Madden International, which is the official website for other countries around the world.
I've been in charge of launching all of our new websites so far, focusing on the frontend in particular, like I said, but I'm also involved in the backend.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?
Each country has its own specifics with respect to connecting the website to various third-party systems like warehouse management software (WMS), ERPs, and other systems. SynapseIndia has helped us throughout the years to establish those connections to systems in those countries, supporting development, studying the APIs for each system, and writing code to connect the two.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?
They're working on launching a new website right now. For some accounts, they support in the sense that if there is something wrong with a connection, they will fix it, but it is mostly development.
For example, in South Africa, there is a team of distributors who work with various WMS, ERPs, or financial tools. When a website that runs on Shopify is launched, we need to connect the website to those systems, and there is a flow in place with respect to inventory updates for things like returns.
SynapseIndia is involved from a programmatic point of view. They have worked on establishing those connections. As far as the programming language, it is mostly .NET, and they are also working with Azure servers.
How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?
In 2017, we decided to switch Stevemadden.com to Shopify. We started to look for teams throughout the world that could help us with this. India is a good option in the sense that there are plenty of companies there that have the capacity to do this kind of work.
We looked on specialized websites — even on the Shopify experts page — where backend, frontend, and customer service companies are listed. I chose a few options, and we had a few kickoff calls where we described the project and everything from the rates and their capacity with human resources.
We chose SynapseIndia because they seemed to be the most reliable team, and they had several hundred people working there. We had an interview with their CEO, and it was love at first sight. At that point, the CEO was involved in all the communication, and he also made a trip to the US where he met the executive of Steve Madden.
They have good communication skills, they are very organized, and everything is documented and logged. These small details made us want to give them a try. If everything went well, we would continue working with them, which is exactly what happened.
How much have you invested in them?
I would say it is somewhere between $200,000 –$300,000 over the last five years.
What is the status of this engagement?
It began around June 2017, and the engagement is ongoing. We continue to heavily rely on them.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
Steve Madden is a public company, but some of the international accounts are in a joint venture with Steve Madden. There are six accounts in this situation, and the others are just official distributors who buy from Steve Madden and sell in their country.
We had to do audits whenever we launched an official market website because we're a public company. There were official audit sessions where we analyzed everything from the project plan to the final product, and various executives had to sign off on different phases. From that point of view, I would say that the outcome of the audits themselves were a good metric to take into consideration.
After we launched the websites — and not only the ones owned by Steve Madden — we could see from the sales and the business itself that they improved month by month.
I'm not sure exactly what is going on in the backend, but if the code didn't work well, then the business wouldn't work well either.
How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?
They are very organized and split into various teams, with a project manager on every team. There are specific key people that only handle the financial or accounting tasks: issuing invoices, making sure they're paid on time, and following up with the people at Steve Madden.
Communication takes place on multiple levels. One level is directly between the programmers and our team, and the other one is between project managers on both sides. There is also the financial and human resources management, who is communicating with the corresponding people on our side. Communication is done mostly through email, Skype, and video or audio conferences.
They're available for meetings and conference calls to facilitate some of our ongoing issues. For example, instead of just going back and forth with email, sometimes a 15-minute call is easier. They were very flexible. Even if a meeting was one hour, they never said they couldn’t do it or would ask to reschedule.
We have an agreement that when 100 hours have been spent from their side, they will issue us an invoice, and together with that invoice, we get a PDF log with every hour that was spent, on what day, and for what. We are all very transparent.
What did you find most impressive about them?
I find them to be pretty awesome as a team, and I would definitely recommend them. They have a lot of people and the capability to handle multiple large projects at the same time.
Are there any areas they could improve?
Something that I think should be taken into consideration is the time difference with them being based in India. This isn't applicable to our business because they work with accounts that are 2–3 hours different than us, which is manageable, but for someone located in the US I would ask them to have people available during US hours. I am not sure if they can do that, or if they already have that, but that is something I would ask as a potential customer.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
It depends on how big your business is, but if the business is big enough, I would ask for a full-time employment model as opposed to working by hours spent and paying by the hour as you go. I think it would be more efficient to have one, three, or 10 resources — depending on your needs — be available every day for the required working time and pay them a salary. This doesn’t apply to us because we don’t have eight hours of work to do daily, but I think it would be more efficient to have a deal where they are paid a monthly salary no matter how many hours they spend throughout the month.

**Feedback Summary**: SynapseIndia has executed a smooth project implementation despite the language barrier, performing tasks on schedule and budget. Daily email communication and weekly phone meetings lead to a fruitful engagement. SynapseIndia's professionalism is evident throughout.
""Communicating with the team has been very good.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your company and your position there.

I am the founder of Equity Experts and TechCollect, which provide collection solutions for condo/HOA communities.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
For what projects/services did your company hire SynapseIndia, and what were your goals?

Collecting delinquencies for a condo or HOA community has historically been a passive and punitive process. During my 25 years in community management, I observed communities struggle to pay an attorney for collection services while lacking the assessments needed for their daily operations. The lack of efficiency and substandard reporting was frustrating for communities, and the process was often punitive for owners that misunderstood their circumstances and the costly consequence of falling behind on their condo/HOA dues.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Synapse gave thoughtful consideration to the application we envisioned and a reasonable timeframe for completion.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

Using predictive data analytics, we developed a system to help us address each delinquency with a unique sequence of communications customized to each debtor. Synapse developed a workflow automation that performs the outbound communication to each debtor on behalf of the community, increasing the likelihood of payment to the community without requiring legal action.

How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We used a team of 3 developers

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Communicating with the team has been very good and the project has performed on schedule and on budget

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

Daily email communication from the development team and weekly phone meetings

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Strong track record

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

The language barrier and familiarity with our industry has been challenging at times, but we have worked through those issues

**The Review** — May 5, 2022

**Feedback Summary**: The app was released on both the AppStore and Google Play and is doing well, thanks to SynapseIndia. The team communicated using various tools including email, Zoom, Skype, and more. Their expertise and work ethic which were widely known in their industry impressed the client.
""They are well known for their development ethos and they hire and retain some of the best talents in the industry.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your company and your position there.

I am the CEO of Kaloud, a company that designs, engineers, and manufacturers award winning products.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
For what projects/services did your company hire SynapseIndia, and what were your goals?

We developed our first electronic product, an LED called the Selestia, which includes some relatively innovative hardware, including a pressure sensor. We needed to create an App that would connect to our hardware via a bluetooth connection. The app would need to include a timer, the ability to select or deselect devices, to turn them on or off, and also change between moods.

**SOLUTION**
How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

We searched for several months and interviewed firms in the Netherlands, USA, Ukraine, Romania, and others in India, but finally decided on Synapse because of their track record, team, and pricing.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

My team has weekly meetings with Synapse and we are also in constant communication via email. Synapse sends us daily updates which are very helpful. We worked to develop apps for iOS and Android.

How many resources from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

We have a project manager as well as several developers.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Our app was developed in about five months and it is currently doing very well on the iOS and Android App stores with very limited issues, that are mostly to do with functionality that our users would like to see added. Aside from that our App is performing really well and we will use Synapse for all our future updates, including our Version 2.0.

Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timeliness.

Very easy to communicate despite the time differences. They are good about using a wide variety of communication tools, email, Zoom, Skype, etc.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They are well known for their development ethos and they hire and retain some of the best talents in the industry. Having visited their offices, I can say that they are also conscientious about the treatment and development of their team members.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

It would be great to see an interactive visual Gantt Chart that shows us past/future milestones, though they certainly do that via email and on our calls. Being that I'm more visual, it would be cool.

**The Review** — Dec 13, 2017

**Feedback Summary**: The new system provides a task management system that is tailored to align with the unique business processes, keeping tasks on time but providing flexibility. Strong technical abilities and excellent graphic design contribute to a strong ROI, encouraging further collaboration.
"“They had a well-defined process for gathering requirements, and they're very good at communicating.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm president of a company called Knexus Research. We are an artificial intelligence, machine learning, and research and development company. Our primary customer is the U.S. Department of Defense for which we research autonomous and intelligent systems.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with SynapseCo?

We were doing something very different with Synapse. We do process management, and there's a specific software-as-a-service application that we were trying to build an infrastructure for. That's not our primary function so we contacted Synapse and had them handle that part of the development project. We are an R&D shop; they are a development shop. We needed development for internal use.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

The software is used for internal task management. As an R&D company, we are fairly familiar with software design and development processes, but that's not what we do. I had a good concept of what I wanted in terms of the software requirements, and I had a few pages of written documentation. Basis this information, they provided their quotation, a rough number of hours, and their approach, which seemed reasonable. After verifying that, we started working on the project.

Their primary job was to develop a user experience design, follow that with the implementation given the software specifications that I've given, and develop the backend for it. I specified that I wanted it to be developed in Angular with the Mongo stack. They have a great deal of experience in some of the other third-party components that we needed in terms of messaging.

They laid out a plan, and we started to develop a proof of concept through storyboarding mockups. They took each of the requirements and conducted a detailed interview to make sure they understood how the system was going to work. They started to give me the UI design, which was very helpful for me to visualize how things would work. Every few days, they gave me pages to look at. They're fairly realistic mockups, and I critiqued them. They iterated and incorporated my design changes.

After that, implementation started. They published their code into our server, which we were able to look at and verify. They put up a staging server which I could interact with and see how things were going. That continued the iteration between UI design, HTML implementation, and backend integration until the project was recently finished. We are still in the process of fully integrating and testing.

What is the team composition?

There were three individuals involved. One was responsible for the frontend design, one was responsible for implementing the frontend, and one was responsible for Angular backend implementation. My main point of contact was the backend developer, and he relayed requests to the other two people who built the frontend. Occasionally, they interacted.

How did you come to work with SynapseCo?

I went to Upwork and posted a job listing, and they responded. The volume and quality of work they had done and the reviews they had gave me confidence that they had the technical competency to understand my requirements and do what we wanted. Rather than a one or two-person shop that I could not evaluate, they had a substantial body of experience. They seemed like a 300-person company. They had a well-defined process for gathering requirements, and they're very good at communicating. Every time they did something, they let me know. The interaction was on a daily basis and very thorough. That gave me the confidence that they're asking the right questions and that we'll get a product that's close to our specifications at the end of the day.

How much have you invested with them?

The cost turned out to be a little higher than I thought because I added a lot of requirements. We spent $14,000–$16,000 with them.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started at the end of July 2017. We've given them a different project, but this particular one ended in November 2017. Right now, we're internally integrating and deploying it.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

It produces a lot of advantages. We do task planning and tracking. Although there are other commercial products out there, we don't use them because they are not well-aligned with our R&D business process. While we follow a process, it's emergent and evolving tied to R&D. This tool that we built helps with that, keeps tasks on time, and at the same time gives our small team a lot of flexibility.

In terms of business advantage, it's like any other task manager. It helps us keep all the projects on track, keeps our costs manageable, provides much more efficiency, and improves communication between team members.

How did SynapseCo perform from a project management standpoint?

We interacted through Skype and Upwork. It was very frequent, almost on a daily basis, and I received immediate responses. At the end of the work day, they're clear in communicating what was done and what was posted. Any requirements and ambiguities were resolved through Skype. Examples were given and documents were exchanged through Upwork and our server. When I didn't feel comfortable having information in the public domain, we used our servers. They were very responsive. They clarified everything we requested. They were very thorough.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Everyone has a good work ethic and technical competency. Their graphic design was very nice. It's very good compared to some agencies I've worked with before. I think they're a very good value for the money for their skill sets. Communication in specifications was sometimes a challenge, but they were very proactive in clarifying exactly how they understood it, went back and implemented it and asked me to verify it.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would be nice if I didn't have to verify so many things. My specification was more along the lines of a narrative and not a software description. If someone could translate nebulous software requirements and turn them into more concrete, detailed design, it would be nice. It would save us some effort. I got some design ideas from them, but I had to ask them for it. Hiring someone with experience in requirements analysis would be helpful.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

The more defined your product concept is, the more efficient they'll be. They are very quick and thorough in taking a relatively closed implementation specification and doing it. They'll certainly get you to the point of success. The amount of time it will take going from your concept to the product will depend on how good you are at specifying it. If you leave things abstract, plan for more design and verification time, which is to be expected, but I didn't have a person with that skill set in the team. If you're looking to give abstract ideas and broad concepts, make sure you factor that into your overall process. They're capable of executing it, but it takes longer.

**The Review** — Dec 11, 2017

**Feedback Summary**: Excellent ratings and showcased work on Guru.com made SynapseCo the obvious choice for an e-freelance developer. Highly responsive and collaborative, the team guided a first-time project manager through the graphic design, content production, and development process, offering useful new ideas
""I appreciated their constant availability, quick responses to emails, and regular updates on project status."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I work for an insurance company in the finance sector. My role focuses on admin and backend projects.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with SynapseCo?

Our company needed to build an online program that would digitize clients’ compliance and disclosure documents. We’d been having them fill out on paper during in-person meetings, and wanted to ease this process for all parties involved.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

SynapseCo provided extensive coding service to build a program that takes our clients’ documentation process online. In meetings, our staff can now use an iPhone, iPad, or laptop to access a website where clients can input their personal contact information, complete forms, and sign documents electronically. Clicking submit functions as a digital signature, and sends a PDF version to their email to maintain a record for the future.

The backend programming included the digital signature, designing "next," "previous," and "submit" buttons, and implementing content including field texts. They built an online quiz or program that lets a user select from multiple options, and then translates that selection into a PDF for each of our clients.

Using basic design programs including Canva and Microsoft Word, I created basic templates to show their team how I wanted the layout to look. Once they received those documents, they’d implement those changes. They're currently conducting a clean-up of the final draft, so we can start using the program exclusively with our clients.

What is the team composition?

Ashish Goenka was our project manager and main point of contact, who I spoke with via Skype calls and email. I occasionally spoke to Depak Kumar Sahoo, just to make sure everything was going well.

How did you come to work with SynapseCo?

We submitted a post on Guru.com to solicit interest from e-freelancers across the world. We’d received significant feedback and interest from other freelancers, but something about SynapseCo’s profile struck my attention. I was impressed by the revenue they'd made via this platform, and their many previous projects had good ratings. Work for other clients showcased on Guru and their own website looked well-done. Their reputation seemed promising, so we took a leap of faith and decided to hire them.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $5,000-$7,000. Guru makes it difficult to track all the spending, because vendors withdraw from the money allocated in one’s paid account based. You have to trust your freelancer to log the correct number of work hours.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in October 2016, and our engagement has lasted a little over a year. Moving forward, I'm not sure if we'll keep them on retainer for ongoing web hosting, but we’ll definitely consider using for our many future projects.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The program seems quite functional so far. Although I don’t have specific metrics to share, I can speak to their value as a company. All the people I've dealt with have been very helpful, and they're excellent at staying in touch. They're always available to respond to our emails, despite the time difference; we're located in Toronto, and they're in India.

Over the last year, they've provided excellent influence for our project. I’d take screenshots of each webpage, compile them into a word document, and add content to show their team what I wanted to change. Several of these update documents evidence the impact of their work, and the nature of our progress over the past 6-8 months.

How did SynapseCo perform from a project management standpoint?

As my first time managing a project, I struggled to see the trajectory from a design and content perspective. They've been supportive in that regard, and consistently gave us useful suggestions to improve the program, including what things to add. I spent a lot of time testing and tracking the site, which may have made the project more expensive than we'd anticipated.

We used several threads on the Guru site to connect on a daily or weekly basis. We also communicated daily or every other day via e-mail and Skype, which is much easier. Despite being based in India, we had very few issues communicating with the group. There was a negligible language barrier, and we resolved incongruences by sending screenshots with additional context.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I appreciated their constant availability, quick responses to emails, and regular updates on project status. If I was busy with work and missed correspondence, they'd send reminder emails and accommodate my schedule. They consistently indicated when they started work on new fixes, and would confirm receipt of my messages by the next day. It was never difficult to get in touch with any of them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Sometimes as the manager for this project, I received insufficient guidance on what direction to take. I would prefer them to provide specific outlines, rather than having to guess what best practice would be. I often gave them basic design templates to show what we were picturing, which they’d implement as-is. We wanted them to showcase our designs at a higher level, and upgrade these generic examples to fit our layout.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I would suggest asking to provide specific examples of PDFs or web links from previous projects related to one’s industry, whether that’s finance, insurance, or marketing. That will give you a nice idea of the value they can bring to your project, or what types of programs they can build for you. Some of their work is shown on Guru, more specifically catered materials might be helpful.

**The Review** — Dec 1, 2017

**Feedback Summary**: The app has received positive feedback from the small number of early users regarding the look and user experience. Synapse is easy to work with despite the time differential and is consistently responsive and enthusiastic. It has been an enjoyable process working with the Synapse team.
""These guys are on the ball and I am very impressed with them."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm the president of a company in which I build mobile apps for iOS and Android. My current project is an app for managing photo on a user's smartphone.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Synapse?

The biggest challenge was that I had taken classes in Android programming, but it was too difficult and I wasn't going to be able to complete the project on time. Therefore I needed to hire a consultant to assist with the Android development.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

Starting from specifications and sketches I provided, Synapse put forward a contract proposal and I was pleased with the cost. They then created a version of the Android app almost to the tee matching what I wanted it to look like. They brought experienced team members to work on the project, which included Android programming, back-end database work, and graphic capabilities. I was very impressed with the capabilities of the team.

What is the team dynamic?

I was in contact with one main project manager, and he put me in touch with two developers who I mainly worked with, one working on the Android programming and the other working on the backend server configuration using Amazon web services.

How did you come to work with Synapse?

I did some searching using a tool called Elance for independent Android developers and I found Synapse India. They had a history of good reviews, so I decided to hire them.

How much have you invested with them?

This year I will have invested between $10,000 and $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The relationship with Synapse began in November 2016 and the first version of the product launched on the Play Store in October 2017. I am continuing to work with them on developing the future versions.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The app only launched about one month ago and the feedback so far has been positive relating to the look and feel of the app.

How did Synapse perform from a project management standpoint?

I am very impressed with them. They politely and enthusiastically prod me to keep the project moving along because they are excited to work on the next phase. I get the sense that they really know how to do business. As an example, I just gave them specifications for an update on the Android development, and they turned it around and got back to me with a proposal in one day. They are also flexible with workflow, allowing me to break the development into five milestones, which is how I like to work.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I found that they were able to bring a number of experienced people to the project, consisting of Android programmers, database programmers, and  SEO capabilities. They have provided me a complete team to be able to get my project to the Play Store, quickly and professionally.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Right now I am very happy with the way they manage projects and I don't have any improvements to offer.

**Feedback Summary**: They used the paper tool developed in the client's dissertation to build and design the app, leaving the client satisfied with the product. They're very professional, knowledgeable about both iOS and Android, and respond quickly to any issues that emerge.
""I had no IT experience, and they guided me through the entire project."
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.

I'm an independent nurse practitioner, helping to care for geriatric patients at the nursing or long-term care facilities.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with Synpase?

I had done a doctoral thesis developing a tool that can be used for patients with wounds in long-term care setting. I needed a software program to document clinician's assessments on wounds, so I was looking for a company to create a mobile app for me.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?

I provided them with a paper tool and explained what layout I was looking for. They developed an app for both iOS and Android based on the original paper tool. In addition, they provided the design work: they gave me different options to choose from and guided me in the right direction. I wanted to call the app "Sage" and  use the sage flowers in the background, so they developed the screens to reflect that.

I see a lot of the same patients from week to week, and the app allows me to input the information and then go back and make changes or print a report for a patient's chart. It saves time, and makes the clinician's work easier.

We're working on a website now, which will be used as a marketing tool to inform people about the app and its features.

What is the team dynamic?

I worked with a designer, a back-end developer, a programmer, and a project manager.

How did you come to work with them?

I used Upwork to solicit the project to several developers. Synapse had the most expertise and the background in medical documentation, so they were a good fit for me.

How much have you invested with them?

I spent around $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

I started working with them in February 2016, and we still work together.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I used to do a dictation service, which was very costly, but with the app there won't be any fee because I will input the information and print it at the facility.

The app (both iOS and Android) is getting ready to launch, so it hasn't been utilized in the public domain yet.

How did they perform from a project management standpoint?

They're very responsive, professional, and timely. We use Skype, email, and phone to communicate. We prefer email since they're in India and I'm the United States.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They're very knowledgeable about the product. I had no IT experience, and they guided me through the entire project.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a clear vision of what you need, and Synapse will be able to guide you and give you suggestions on how to market it.

**Feedback Summary**: Compared to other overseas dev teams, SynapseCo is one of the best. They’re timely, responsive, and consistently deliver high-quality products. The time difference and language barrier can cause issues, but nothing they haven’t overcome. They work as hard as (or harder than) the in-house dev team.
"“Any new projects go to them first because I know they’ll do a great job.”
"

**BACKGROUND**
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CEO of a tech company that works with trading-type businesses in the financial sector. We develop trading and marketing platforms, B2B products, backend membership websites, landing pages, etc.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What challenge were you trying to address with SynapseCo?
We initially hired SynapseCo to develop a web-based app for one of our partner companies.

**SOLUTION**
What was the scope of their involvement?
We had somewhat of a prototype for the app already, but we decided to make it for a single client instead of the whole market, so SynapseCo took the functionality and concept of the initial app and built it for one user.
We've also had them build some custom functionality for our traders, custom e-mail solutions, and some backend widgets, trade boards, and plugins. These are all on a WordPress site, and I believe SynapseCo uses PHP, Ajax, Laravel, and HTML. The projects are all for different partners, and everything SynapseCo makes is mediated through us.
What is the team dynamic?
We’ve had as many as six people on our team. The composition changes sometimes, but we usually have WordPress developers, a couple of designers, a backend expert, and then some SEO experts and content writers. We tell SynapseCo what skills we need, and they put the team together.
How did you come to work with SynapseCo?
We researched several different vendors before finding SynapseCo. Our initial project was the app, but they did so well that we began to give them steady work for other projects.
How much have you invested with them?
We’ve spent well over six figures so far.
What is the status of this engagement?
We’ve been working together for about a year and a half.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
They deliver their products on time and perform at the same level or better than our in-house team. Any new projects go to them first because I know they’ll do a great job. Normally, I'm very thorough and picky when it comes to working with a third-party vendor, but SynapseCo has consistently impressed me.
How did SynapseCo perform from a project management standpoint?
Most of our communication is via Skype, but we also use email, screen shares, and phone calls. We talk with them every night.
The team they provide us has changed a few times, but it’s probably been about 90% consistent so far, and whenever it does switch, we’ve never lost any quality.
What did you find most impressive about them?
For an overseas company, they’re timely and easy to work with. They deliver on their promises, and their skillsets make them an invaluable partner. I can trust that they’ll do the job well and be honest about their capacity and limitations.
Are there any areas they could improve?
The time difference and language barrier have sometimes been a challenge, but that’s not necessarily their fault. We’ve managed to work through any miscommunications, though.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Do your research and be clear on your expectations so that everyone is on the same page. In long distance partnerships, it’s critical that everyone understands the project or else the timeline can be severely delayed.

**Feedback Summary**: The company is very satisfied with SynapseIndia's work and their thorough understanding of the project's needs. One of the agency's strong suits is communication: they smoothly manage interactions with an outsourced maintenance team and maintain a collaborative development process.
"“[SynapseIndia] works well with each other and their clients in order to provide the best possible solution.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

Our company sells school clothing to schools in the UK.

What is your position?

I am the senior partner of the company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We needed help in developing our website. We didn’t have the ability to do the work ourselves, so we had to outsource the work.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of your involvement with SynapesIndia.

SynapseIndia has modernized our website using the Magento platform. We have had about six developers from SynapseIndia assigned to our project, and we interact with them directly. One developer is assigned to maintaining our cloud server and other resources working on different sites for the company.

At the moment, we’re running a project that will combine three sites into one administrative panel.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

I found SynapseIndia through Upwork, which was called oDesk at the time. I considered some UK-based companies in the beginning but chose SynapseIndia out of several candidates. Up to that point I had used several developers for website work, but I ultimately decided to use only SynapseIndia in order to maintain continuity. Introducing new developers at that stage would require training them from zero.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The total development cost with SynapseIndia has been between $3,000 and $4,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We first got in touch with SynapseIndia two or three years ago, and the relationship is ongoing.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics, metrics or other feedback from this engagement?

SynapseIndia is a good and thorough development agency.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

SynapseIndia has come to understand how we expect them to work. We have daily contact through Skype and can easily give them instructions. If SynapseIndia’s team is unclear about anything, they will let us know. We also collaborate through the Upwork platform and work on an hourly basis. Upwork is good enough for us, so we don’t use any specialized project tracking tools.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

SynapseIndia works well as a team. They work well with each other and their clients in order to provide the best possible solution. It’s better to work with a team that has the cumulative expertise and knowledge in order to get the best result. Previously I worked with a different company for server maintenance, but getting two companies to talk can be difficult, so we decided to move that task to SynapseIndia, so they could manage the whole lot.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

SynapseIndia should make sure that their resources have a good grasp of the English language, given that they’re dealing with English-speaking clients. We have been able to get through to them, but it’s sometimes better to talk to a vendor in our own language.

All deliverables were on time and working properly, and their commitment to the project showed in their careful approach. In one instance, Synapse went the extra mile by spending an entire week to conduct more research free of charge.
""SynapseIndia is a serious company, compared to some of their competition.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We are a startup developing a data-feed marketplace.

What is your position?

I am the founder of the company. Because we are so small, I basically manage everything from the product, to the business development, and the operations.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We wanted to save money by outsourcing development. The idea was to find a reliable partner that could support our development tasks and also scale their involvement when the time came.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

SynapseIndia developed various modules for our company and also helped us with project management. We also have an e-commerce presence for which SynapseIndia has built backend software like inventory management integrations with distributors and marketplaces. We mainly use open-source software like Magento. SynapseIndia has developed our solutions using MySQL, PHP, and more recently, Java.

At its peak, our team consisted of 4 developers from SynapseIndia. We interacted with them directly.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

SynapseIndia was one of the biggest companies on Elance at the time. The cost was a major consideration when making our choice. We considered around 10 other candidates, and initially started working with two of them. We ultimately switched to SynapseIndia exclusively.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The total development cost so far has been above $300,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We have an ongoing engagement with SynapseIndia. I plan on using them for many years.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

SynapseIndia did a very good job of developing our marketplace integration software. They delivered the work in a reasonable amount of time and always checked if everything was working properly. We run many scrum jobs, and any problems are addressed without delay. SynapseIndia's team will usually have overtime until everything is working properly. Their commitment level is always 100%. SynapseIndia's team is also very polite, respectful, and professional.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

In terms of scheduling, we've only had minor issues. We don't use any specialized project management tools because our management does not require this. Documentation and feedback are provided by myself directly. I give SynapseIndia small tasks, instead of overall projects. They report to me twice a day by either email, Skype, or phone.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

SynapseIndia is a serious company, compared to some of their competition. I worked with other developers who always found reasons for delays, sometimes lying. SynapseIndia focuses on my project and gives me access to the resources I hire.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

Whenever we have issues or delays, SynapseIndia simply gives me discounts. At times, I was not charged for a week's worth of work when their developers needed more time to do research. SynapseIndia has always accommodated me and made sure that I was happy.

**Feedback Summary**: Synapse has consistently shown their expertise in a myriad of different technologies. They provide helpful assistance with design and coding for both larger projects and website modifications. Communication is routine and effective, and the agency immediately fixes the rare bug.
"“In terms of programming skills, I definitely have no issues with SynapseIndia.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We are an e-learning specialist company for repair stations. Our company is a subset of the Earle Aviation administration, issuing licenses for mechanics.

What is your position?

I am the founder of the company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

I was looking for programming talent which we lacked in-house. The ability to have access to resources on-demand was important. There weren't enough programming requirements in our company as to justify a fulltime team.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

SynapseIndia has worked with us as an external resource. They represent our sole programming capabilities. SynapseIndia has worked on PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript applications. We also worked on one project using Apache Flex, and have used them for small CSS and HTML modifications to our website, in order to make it responsive. Our focus has been on PHP, in which SynapseIndia is very good.

There have been 2-3 developers assigned to our work, but we've primarily worked with only one person for the last 8 years. Specialized projects, like the Flex one, have required different persons. We also brought in CSS and HTML designers for our website work. We haven't used any quality assurance resources.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

I went through a bidding process and reviewed two candidates, SynapseIndia being one of them. They proved to be much better from a working relationship standpoint. I didn't consider local companies due to cost. Given the ad hoc nature of our work, local availability was not very important.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The average annual cost is around $8,000-12,000. The total cost has been around $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We have been working together for 8 years.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Expertise has been shown repeatedly by SynapseIndia. They've been helpful with design and coding, as well as with changes to our website. SynapseIndia is very responsive in this sense.

Defects are problems that are never addressed or are outside of the scope of what can be done, which has never happened with SynapseIndia. If we run into a problem, they will fix it, so it's never been an issue.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

They've been better than myself in terms of responding to progress checks. Communication has always been done verbally and with occasional screenshots for what needs to be changed in terms of visual design. SynapseIndia has allowed us to work in this way, without any issues. Because I constantly deal with the same person, I haven't had a need to use specialized project management tools.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

Since I've worked exclusively with SynapseIndia for a long time, I don't have many points of comparison with other competitors. I've found that their level of communication has been extremely good and has allowed me to rely on SynapseIndia for programming. We've underwent a series of small code changes which have progressed over almost 10 years. The application has changed in ways which couldn't be predicted in the beginning, but SynapseIndia rolled along with this. They've shown flexibility and adaptability.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

I'm very happy with the relationship. We've settled into a very smooth communication routine, so there are no problems in that regard. In terms of programming skills, I definitely have no issues with SynapseIndia. Whenever I needed additional expertise on top of the PHP work, the company itself has stepped up with programmers who could provide the service. Upsurge capability is a good advantage.

**Feedback Summary**: Synapse's engineering work was done well, and the overall project was effective in terms of cost and functionality. Though design resources were slim, the agency's communication and coding capabilities helped bring the project to a successful close and build an ongoing partnership.
"“...In terms of engineering, they're very good and efficient.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We are a video based platform, a community for sharing videos.

What is your position?

I'm the founder of the startup.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

I'm a designer myself and I needed engineering help for making the site. I was basically looking for someone to take my visual designs and implement them. It needed to be cost effective and the level of service had to be very high as well as reliable.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

The website was built from scratch. Technology-wise, it was pretty basic. It's Linux-based, developed using PHP and I chose my own hosting. In terms of architecture, they pretty much came up with all the ideas. They worked on a lot of the application program interface [API].

I had one developer assigned for my project. Aside from him, there was an overall project manager, one designer for HTML structuring, and one engineer.

I chose Amazon Web Services [AWS] for hosting, and that required high technical skill for installation. AWS has a lot of different elements and components, which were beyond my knowledge. They have a small team specialized on that.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

I conducted interviews with at least three other companies, and in the end, I chose them. My choice was based on a combination of accessibility, cost and previous experience.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

We've spent over $30,000 overall.

What is the status of this engagement?

It's an ongoing relationship.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

In terms of outside feedback, I don't have a whole lot. My own feedback is that they're average to good, engineering-wise.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

They did a great job in terms of cost effectiveness and delivery. You will always have technical difficulties. Because we are in a very resource-controlled environment at this point, we do our best with what we have. I do all illustrations myself, and the engineers make up 60-70% of the project. Communication with them is generally very good.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

Not that I don't think highly of them, but they don't really work on a project. They maintain the relationship at asking if everything is okay.

When it comes to design, they're not really what you're looking for. They do not have the right resources for creative work. If you're looking for good, organized, engineering work, they should be able to support your need. I ended up firing the designer assigned to us because the work was very lousy and unorganized. I didn't think they knew what they were doing. In the first six months, I was not able to go to the backend and look at the code. I could look to the CSS, but had no access for making corrections myself. I would give them a design and it would come out totally different. The current designer is more organized and generally better. I wish I'd had him from the start.

The problem is that it's very difficult to go back and fix things. It's very time-consuming. This is my one bad experience with them. Again, in terms of engineering, they're very good and efficient.

My recommendation for future clients is to treat Synapse as a production shop for more technical work, and to steer away from using them as a creative or strategic partner. If you're just looking for something very ordinary, it would be okay.

Our business concept has been done before, but it's still different from anything out there. This became a challenge. I'm the designer myself, and I have very high standards in terms of what I'm looking for. Something being two pixels off from what I wanted is a problem. If you have very high standards, you should have an in-house designer to work with them.

**Feedback Summary**: SynapseIndia acts as an supplement to the internal team, and the company is impressed with the reliability and consistency of their work. Despite being based in different locations, communication is simple. The agency also helped with a range of components, including a revenue calculator and SEO.
""They've been really good at setting up times that are convenient for both of us.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We are an online aggregator of food products – an online farmers' market. We have created a back-end that allows 750 vendors to put their items up in one convenient place. We then help them sell their items.

What is your position?

I am one of the founders.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We needed Synapse to help develop the functional back-end for us. We use mostly off-the-shelf components that we've heavily modified to allow us to have a vendor portal. We were having difficulty manipulating that package in a way that we wanted.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

We used Magento primarily. We've also found a few different bolt ons, so to speak, for vendor logging in and the portal part. Then, it was rebuilt from the ground up for our purposes.

There are too many modules to mention that were used in our platform. One of the bigger things we had them do is to create custom shipping modules. Also, a custom login portion that allows us to manage not only products, but vendors and customers at the same time. They've done some extensive work on the shipping module. I don't think anyone else had what we were looking to do.

They've created and remodified geolocation modules for us. They've reworked some of the standard Stamps.com, FedEx, and UPS modules in order to work within our paradigm. They did work on our online credit card processing, and created a revenue calculator in the back-end for our vendors. They've also done some extensive SEO [search engine optimization] and Google work for us. They weren't the first developers we've used, but they've been with us for 18 months so far.

Individual developers come and go, based on our individual projects. We run one or two projects at a time and, based on the need, I will pick out what the next thing to work on will be. We've only done a soft launch so far. Most of our activity so far has been building up our vendor base. We need products to sell. While we've done that, we've been live testing. We've done some marketing, but we soon realized that we needed to work more on the kinks in the back-end and in getting vendors.

Right now, we're implementing a different type of Apache Server, which is faster and more tailored toward Magento. Within that project, we've had multiple people work with us. Generally, we have one project person and, depending on our needs, we'll hire through them. At this launch, there were probably six developers we worked with. They've been a one-stop shop for us.

We work directly with the developers or directly through their project manager, depending on the technical knowledge level at our end.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

We'd gone through a couple of different firms in New Jersey and New York City. We didn't really like them. I'm a developer by trade and reached out to some friends that had done offshore projects. SynapseIndia came up. They weren't the first we used. We tried two other companies and gave them each a small sliver of work. Of the three, we liked SynapseIndia the most in terms of interaction, how they worked, and cost structure.

What is the status of this engagement?

Primarily, we work with them project by project. We've used Elance and eWork. I've talked to my project manager about their involvement, and recently they've been giving us feedback regarding what they could do for us. I will weigh that against what the other founders think and pull the trigger if we think it's right.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Since they operate as an extension of our team, we don't really have any specific metrics tied exclusively to them. Our own staff has been very impressed with their reliability and the consistency of their work. We rarely have issues with bugs discovered after launch.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

They've mostly delivered on budget. The few exceptions have not been their fault. The scope of the original project was not done correctly.

They've been really good at setting up times that are convenient for both of us, so we could have real-world communication. We talk through Skype every morning.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

As great as their communication is, there occasionally will be an issue because they are in India. They should get some more native English speakers even though they generally speak the language. The project manager's English is fantastic. When it comes to speaking with some of the programmers, though, things will get lost in translation. That's not really their fault because they don't typically send clients that far down the rabbit hole.

**The Review** — Nov 30, 2015

**Feedback Summary**: The three busiest learning management systems have more than 5,000 visits per month from learners. Synapse was highly communicative, sending daily updates and ensuring that multiple projects stayed on schedule. Their consistency and communication built an ongoing relationship.
"“With SynapseIndia, I get those regular updates, so I know exactly where they are.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

My company is called Mortimer James Media. We offer learning through media. We have also built a couple of software products. Much of that work was done by SynapseIndia. I also work in a couple of companies where I help outsourcing some of their work. For that, I use the companies I'm familiar with.

What is your position?

I'm the founder.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We've had a WordPress site for about a year. We wanted a new theme. We were using WordPress and other software for learning management, and we were getting a little tired of most learning management systems not having any CMS [content management system] capabilities, specifically being able to create a site for learners, before they even logged in – basically, a home page with marketing elements. Then, they would be shown the learning management part. We designed a concept for creating a learning management system in WordPress, and we hired them to do the development work – creating the actual theme, and a couple of plug-ins.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

I would say, from the time we started, until the theme was completed, maybe three or four developers worked with us.

We initially branched out to them for design work. We had done initial designs and, during the development process, the initial ones weren't cutting it for us. They weren't visually appealing any longer. We asked them to do some of the other design work as well as the development. There's also been a ton of testing they did for us from both database quality assurance, to user testing.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

I already had accounts on various freelancing sites, such as oDesk and Elance. I had already encountered them through propositions for other jobs that I had posted. I put them in my favorites list and when it came to this bigger project, I preferred to have a bigger company, where I knew that I wouldn't be depending on one or two developers, who might change their whole life, and not be developers anymore. A bigger company could offer me developers and, if those developers left, they could throw others into the project. Since I already had a history with them, and their proposal for this project looks good, we made a deal.

We hadn't considered other companies. Every time that I post something on one of the freelancing sites, I will get many proposals and check them over. When it finally comes down to whom I decide to go with, there specific arguments: if I'd done work with them in the past, or whether I'd put them in my favorites list, their portfolio, the reputation they have on the site – whether it's three, four, five stars – and their specific history with the tools that I need them to work on. In this case, with WordPress, it's PHP, HTML, JavaScript, and such.

It's very nice to have a tool where me and my team can get in a room, throw it up on the TV, and go through 10 to 20 proposals, weed some out, and narrow it down. Typically, there are that many good ones. It's a testament to say that they rose to the top of a big list.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

It was between $120,000 and $150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

They completed the most recent milestone for us this week [December 2015].

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

We have several instances of our LMS running at the moment. The busiest three have more than 5,000 visits per month from learners.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

One of the reasons I liked them from the start, and I continue to like them, is that they work really hard to make sure that communication is not an issue. If anything, they overcommunicate. Ultimately, I like that. I would rather know ahead of time, than trying to pull it out of them, if something is delayed, or isn't going as planned. There's daily communication, including updates. They will initiate either a phone call or a Skype IM session if there's something they're not sure about. For the most part, we prevent any problems or rework by making sure everyone's clear about what the plan is upfront. I'm very happy about the way in which they manage their projects.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

I've worked with lots of other freelancers and contractors from India, The Philippines, Japan, Vietnam, Canada, and the United States. Many of them do great work, but they don't communicate, so sometimes you're left hanging with regard to how far along they are, and when the piece you're waiting for is going to be sent. Often, those people do send it on time, and it's good. Still, when you don't know, you start to get a little anxious about whether they're still working on it. With SynapseIndia, I get those regular updates, so I know exactly where they are. It makes it easier for me to send that information along to our team and our stakeholders.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

They work on daytime hours in India. That was my preference at the beginning. There are many people who will work overnight for them so that they're available during daytime in the United States. I've had good experiences with that, but I've come to see that, working that schedule night after night messes with your body. I preferred that they would work during the day. However, since I also use them to support the learning management system, such as if someone would send me a ticket here during the day, I would like to know that there's someone awake there to handle it if there's something I'm not able to troubleshoot locally. We haven't crossed that bridge yet, though, so I'm not certain they offer 24-hour support.

The other thing would be their use of English and grammar being a little bit off. I would recommend to anyone to work on that constantly, to make sure they sound as professional as possible; especially with someone in the U.S. who might be less forgiving with the way a foreigner speaks. Right now, I'm stretching to find areas of improvement, really.

**Feedback Summary**: Synapse delivered products that were as close as possible to the original specs and drawings. They were easy to work with and always kept communication open and honest, leading to a positive development experience. Their dedication and skill built an ongoing partnership.
"“We find them easy to work with, and they've always stayed on top of things.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We manufacture and sell jewelry tools. We focus mostly on metal stamping, for people who make stamp metal jewelry. We actually make metal stamps that they use, and then we make all the blanks and everything that they stamp onto. We use retail and a wholesale approach.

What is your position?

I am the owner of the company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We previously worked with another company, who had built out the wholesale site for us on Magento, and then our retail sites were all on Network Solutions. We wanted to migrate them to Magento, so I hired Synapse to build out the retail sites onto our existing instance of Magento. They also built another whole site off the wholesale one.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

We designed the site and provided them with all the PSDs [Photoshop documents], and they just built it out off that. That was pretty much their function. We had three people working on our website, and there was a project manager. There were other people that I think would get involved here and there, but it was mostly the same two or three people every day.

They've been helping us to optimize the site a little bit with performance speed, trying to improve the page load times. As far as testing, we've been doing that in-house.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

The wholesale site had a lot of customization to it, so we wanted to do that one here in the United States, with Pixafy. The guys overseas are a lot cheaper, so I just wanted to identify a good overseas company. I looked in some different places, I think the main one was Elance. I was looking for the top Magento developers there, and I found them.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

I would say it's probably between $10,000 and $20,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

They completed the initial project at the beginning of August [2015]. We're currently building a wholesale site for the retail side, so they're working on a new site for us. After that, I have another site I have to build onto. This will be a long-term engagement.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

The only thing I can think of is maybe the number of deliverables we had with them. The primary measurement has just been how close they could get to our drawings and our specs. The overall success of the site really doesn't have to do with them, as far as improving the conversion rate or something like that; that's more on us. I can't say I have any real metrics. Anecdotally, we've definitely been pleased with the engagement. We find them easy to work with, and they've always stayed on top of things.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

As far as budget, they were very affordable. I was happy with the cost. We did it on an hourly basis, and that seemed to work out well. As far as scheduling, there were no hard deadlines for this one. It took longer than I expected, but I don't think it was really their fault. I know from doing other projects that these things tend to drag on, so I'm not going to get on them for that. SynapseIndia was very responsive throughout the process and always gave me a heads up when things weren't going to be delivered exactly on time. Plus, they always included an explanation. It wasn't like, "Hey, this is going to be late." They gave us constant updates.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

With Pixafy, it was always hard to get their attention. I had to fight with them for them to work on it. These guys are almost like overstaffed. It was almost like they're sitting around waiting, getting on me to give them stuff to do, so that was a good thing.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

I would just say the only thing that was a little frustrating was getting the site to our specs. We held them to a really high standard and, in the end, they were able to do it. We wanted every pixel on that site to be as we had it in our PSDs. For the most part, they were able to do that. There was a lot of back and forth on the front end sometimes, and it got a little frustrating. In the end, it turned out fine.

#### MySQL and PHP Development for Medical Billing Firm

**The Review** — Sep 30, 2015

**Feedback Summary**: Synapse successfully submits deliverables on a weekly basis, with little to no errors. Their communication was very efficient, and they were fully capable of understanding milestones and filling in any gaps independently. Their documentation methods were also a strong quality.
"“I have to admit, I was more than happily surprised with their work.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We're a billing services company for medical health care. In the past, it has entirely been paper driven, where we collect the routing slips, input the appropriate codes, and upload them for the recipient, primarily in the province of Ontario, Canada. We are making a shift, though, moving towards making an application with a mobile app, which simplifies the process for the physicians to enter that information, and that's what we're using SynapseIndia for.

What is your position and responsibilities?

I am the project leader for the development, so I look after all development activities.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We had the initial development done by a company in Washington, D.C. We weren't very happy with them, so we repatriated it through various references to SynapseIndia. I've been working with them now since early August of this year [2015]. We were at the early stages of the development of the system, so we had a beta version available, but there was more to be done within general function and also in the very specifics and the rules behind billing. I've been working with them to get delivery of those particular features.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

We have about one and a half people working on our project, not including a project manager. They do have a project manager but, in fact, I have not really had a conversation with that person. We were interacting directly with the developers.

The core technology is the MySQL database plus the PHP front-end. We have mobile apps, which are hybrid, and we use Cordova to configure them for iPhone. It's derived originally from MIT, and Sun Java incorporated with the ones who actually commercialized it. Not many people use it, but since Sun Java is the company that did the development first, we've been using that still. It's an open source technology.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

The owner of this company is a member of the Entrepreneurs Organization. The person who actually is the CEO of SynapseIndia is also a part of that organization. They tend to favor their own members first, so my owner recommended them. I've had conversations with them and talked to them, and I was pleased with what I heard. I parceled up the initial development to be in small enough packages that I could assess their abilities, and that's proven wise.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

We tend to run about $750 per week. I think we're starting to look at maybe $6,000, so it's not a great deal.

What is the status of this engagement?

We've been going through a series of milestones, and the most recent one was last week [October 2015]. We've been reaching milestones, I would say small development packages, once per week on average. It's a rapid development method we're using – very agile.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

I don't actually track specific metrics on an administrative level, but I do have them from an overall point of view. I typically want to see a deliverable once every week, and I am achieving that. In terms of quality, since I'm doing the testing, I pretty well have an idea of what I want out of the assistance, so I tend to be pretty happy with what's coming out at the moment. I'm not using other metrics because the team is small enough, and our delivery is not a huge one. We've elected just to go with those simple metrics.

I have to admit, I was more than happily surprised with their work. I've worked with offshore companies before and found that they are typically affordable, but you tend to have to be very careful about how you specify, what you say, and to make sure that when you have conversations, both sides fully understand what's being said. I've had three people work with me from SynapseIndia, and I found that they speak very good English, so I have no problems with misunderstandings.

The second is, they seem to understand what I'm saying fully. They're very capable of conveying their questions and concerns, and they tend to be pretty forthright with areas where further clarification is required. A tendency could be, "Well, you only told me to do this." Whereas they are pretty engaged in terms of the fundamental process by which the application is going to be worked.

There seem to be many festivals going on in their region right now. Of the three developers that I work with, one of them will actually go off and a second will fill in. Their team structure is such that the person who fills in has been doing work on it prior to that, so they're fully informed, the handoff is well done, and there's no drop in pace whatsoever in taking on that added responsibility. I've been pretty happy with that.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

I've had offshore experiences before, so instead of giving them a lump sum of requirements, I've given them a roadmap with the specific development items that we would have in mind. Then, I specify further as we would get closer to each milestone, and give it to them. I actually have a daily call with them in order to clarify the requirements and answer questions, and that's gone extremely well.

I tend to participate and do the user-acceptance testing of what they've completed for me, so I'm pretty intimately involved with what they're doing. In that respect, they don't need a project manager, that's pretty well done by me. I haven't used any project management tools, except for tracking on a spreadsheet. It's not complicated enough to need Microsoft Project or anything like that.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

SynapseIndia is very good at documenting what they do. We have a method for exchanging documentation and information. They submit progress reports once a day, so I get to see what they've been working on. We have a call once a day.

Is there anything Synapse India could have improved or done differently?

I don't think so, the reason being is that it's not complex work. Some of the requirements are complicated, but they are such a small team, I don't think there's much that can be improved on. The only other area we're going to be delving into is, we're going to have them help set up our production cloud environment as well. The only thing I'm going to keep in mind is how coordinated are they between their development and infrastructure people. I haven't seen much in that regard yet, so there's not much to comment on.

**Feedback Summary**: After the site launched, there were slight improvements across the analytics board, from page views to user signups. Furthermore, the site was newly accessible to its mobile users. Synapse's continuous reporting and constant accessibility made it easy to make adjustments during the process.
"“All of the developers have always been available there. They've been brilliant.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We're a United Kingdom-based touring operator. We arrange very specific holiday or group trips. In the United States, you know it as a bachelor party or a bachelorette party. We organize what in the U.K. are called stage and hen weekends. We only arrange trips within the U.K., so it's U.K. customers traveling to cities in the U.K. to celebrate.

What is your position?

I am one of the partners and owners.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We've been around for about 10 years, and in that time we redeveloped the site three or four different times. I think our last experience, we had it developed in .NET, and it wasn't responsive. We got to a point where we needed it redone again because we had it done just before the whole tablet boom – before the iPad came out. We needed it done again, but development in the U.K. is quite pricey, and not if you use overseas developers.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement.

We gave them the job of completely redesigning the site using WordPress, so it could be edited easily and changed in the future, and introduced many more features, bits and pieces to it. The undertaking was quite large. We have to deal with people browsing through packages, individual activities, group members being able to pay for their bit of the packages as a whole, and all sorts.

The size of the team has varied from one person up to five people, depending on what's going on at any given time. During the entire period, there has been probably 10 different people working on it.

I've used WordPress for other projects myself, I know that its open source, so any of that code isn't going to be compiled. We had issues in the past with developers disappearing, and compiled code can give you some issues, so that was part of the decision to use WordPress. Secondly, a huge number of websites run on WordPress, so you have the support there, and you can edit things yourself. A competent non-technical person can make changes and tweaks on their own, and that was important to us as well because we have a number of people on staff that aren't developers.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

We used Elance to find them. You post the job on Elance, you get people to bid for it, and then it's sort of finding that combination between price, expertise and good reviews – something like using TripAdvisor to pick a hotel. SynapseIndia proved to be the right choice, and they're a big company, they're not one or two developers in some small office. They have a lot of people on staff and a lot of depth to their knowledge. If the product changed in any way, I knew we wouldn't have to stop working with them because they've got experts in just about every field.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

It's been probably about $50,000 so far.

What is the status of this engagement?

We still do bits and pieces now. The job started last July [2014], and we went live in December last year. Then we kept on doing tweaks and changes and adding new features in. We've been working with them for more than a year now. A milestone will be completed tomorrow [October 2015]. Before that, it has just been minor tweaks, not any major milestones.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

Their work was mostly user features, for when people become customers, rather than when they first visit. The big push to the site this time around was related to being able to manage the bookings, both for us and for the customers themselves – managing their groups and inviting their friends – those sorts of things. In the sense of whether the site performs better or worse for getting new customers, it's on the par because the designs of all of our previous sites have been good, including this one.

This job is more about functional improvements, rather than attracting more people generally. Bounce rates are about the same. I've done a comparison of January 1, 2015 to September 22 of this year, and compared it to last year. Everything looks positive with slight improvements across the board. Sessions are up, users are up, page views are up, pages per session is up, average session duration is up, and all is good. The big change for us was making the site completely responsive, so that's helped. In the U.K. now, probably 50 percent or more of visitors are using not just phones, but iPhones and other devices, like Android.

Their working day fits in with different time zones. They work long days. You might not have all of your development team all the time, but there's pretty much somebody working on your site from when they start in the morning to when they finish, which overlaps with the U.K. working day. That's been very beneficial.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

SynapseIndia was able to deliver all their assigned milestones on time and within budget, without any major defects in their work. It was a moving target for a lot of the stuff, so we didn't really have major deadlines because we obviously had a working website. They've been good. When needed, they've added a resource and got the job done.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

I can tell you something that I like about them that distinguishes them from offshore, onshore, and all providers: you don't give them a job and then they disappear, and then come back two weeks later and go, "Here it is"' Every day, you get an update on what they've done. Because we've used Elance, we can look at their Work View to see a screenshot every hour, being able to spot a problem as it's happening.

A number of times, I've seen the screenshot and thought, "Oh, hang on, it looks like they're going slightly in the wrong direction there," and been able to get onto Skype to give them some feedback. They're always on Skype. All of the developers have always been available there. They've been brilliant.

My previous experience is, you give somebody a spec, they go away for a couple of weeks, come back with a mockup. You say, "OK," and they go away for a couple more weeks, come back with a full working site, and you're like, "No, that's not what we had in mind at all." This experience has been a case of every day you can see what's going on, and you don't have that whole, "Well that was a wasted two weeks." Or worse, it's a wasted half a day, or something like that, which is amazing. I guess transparency of development is what impressed me the most.

You can give them chunks of work, and they will still get in touch with you with any sort of query. It's almost as if the developer sits next to you, and you can give instant feedback, rather than building up a ton of work to test or review. Everything works very smoothly.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

Not really. They work most Saturdays. There were no problems of a language barrier or anything like that – everybody's good. Offhand, I can't think of anything.

Their work is consistently reliable, with little to no bugs, and they are able to scale resources depending on need. The team is highly personable and equally professional, creating a fruitful long-term relationship.
""Synapse India consistently delivers their assigned work on time and within budget.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We do advanced, private intranet-type web development. We build them and host them for nonprofits and commercial businesses.

What is your position?

I'm the vice president of development.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with Synapse India?

We were looking for someone to use long term as a partner, in doing advanced work with Drupal. In the past, we've struggled with more demanding projects that required custom module development and integration with other systems. Because we have limited resources here on staff, we decided that we would find a partner to provide a more long-term solution to our needs. Going offshore was a priority since we wanted to take advantage of more affordable development talent.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement in more detail.

So far, we've utilized them for Drupal projects, as well as Amazon Web Services. They've worked primarily on developing custom modules rather extensively, working with standard Drupal contributed modules to customize those and build them out. They fix and debug any kind of inconsistencies or problems in the configurations. I would say that it's mostly custom development and custom modules.

I connect with the developers one-on-one every night. We've asked to work with only their senior level developers. If they do bring other people in for smaller tasks, we want to know that they are supervised by the senior people.

How did you come to work with Synapse India?

We found them by doing a query on Elance. We put out what we wanted, and they were one of the respondents. We were flooded when we first posted the job, and there were around seven or eight that we figured were potential candidates. We were only interested in actual firms, not individual freelancers, as we were looking for long-term development, and we knew we were going to need a variety of skills.

Our goal was to work with one firm; it would make it easier if we could find everybody in one organization. That has turned out to be crucial to our successful relationship with Synapse India. We have to work with people who know AWS system administration, as well as Drupal, and databases, and all that stuff. We selected them, and it worked out well.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

We're probably approaching six figures at this point.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together around December of last year [2014] or maybe January, and our relationship is ongoing. We're working with them every day for the last year, including last night.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

The end-users don't know who our third-party resources are, but the customers are very happy with the products we're building. Overall, their work is very reliable, and we rarely have to send work back for bug fixes. More importantly, they have the ability to ramp up and down based on our project needs. That's really important to us because sometimes we aren't able to give them that much advanced notice, but they're very flexible.

How did Synapse India perform from a project management standpoint?

Synapse India consistently delivers their assigned work on time and within budget. We don't use any specific project management tools. We create specs, send those to them via Elance, and we connect with them daily through Skype.

When working with an offshore team, it's important to provide detailed functionality requirements and have good, transparent communication. By doing those two things, we've had a good experience with them.

What distinguishes Synapse India from other providers?

We like the people that we work with personally. We find them very personable. Their English is pretty good. I wouldn't call it perfect, but it's very easy to communicate with them. Their writing skills are good. All of that makes it easier for us. They pretty much do what they say they will do, generally on time. In development, things do happen unexpectedly that affect the schedule, but that's just because things happen. I have no complaints whatsoever.

At any given time, there were 6-8 developers working on the project, and the overall workflow was highly structured and efficient.
"“...We just have such a good system down, where requests are made, and requests are fulfilled.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We’ve been getting ready to go online for two years, into the area of senior furnishings, which is a business-to-business model that provides goods and services to continuing care retirement communities. With that, we’ve been using Synapse to help us with our online presence.

So essentially once the site goes live, we’ll be the only site in the United States that is open to the public, servicing 60,000 businesses. I’m trying to capture that market share and then going global three months later. My background is an architecture in that industry, for close to ten years, so it was just realizing a market gap and trying to take that to market. That’s pretty much the thrust of the business model that we’re working on at the moment.

What is your position?

I am the CEO of the company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with Synapse India?

The involvement was taking the idea to an actual operational interface. I purposely had targeted that Southeast Asia region, having previous experience in Bangalore, working with other Indians, I knew I wanted to be in that area. Once I found a few companies, I was looking at their project tracking, project reporting, and how they actually manage their projects. I needed to be able to trust them because they had never worked with the visualization software that we had used, and they had to write new code for that.

They appeared to have those type of skills, but they had no way to prove it. After multiple discussions, giving them a chance to move forward, each time they took that step, they did the step properly. Very quickly, within a matter of a few weeks, the whole project was offloaded onto them.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement in more detail.

The process was quite straightforward. I had the business model all figured out on how the e-commerce site works. I did not want to rely on Synapse for the design of our graphical interface. The problem is, we’re doing a Western-built website, and Eastern people can’t understand how Western people relate to brands and content. They know what to do for the average person, but this is a highly specialized approach.

As a result, I had actually created all the .psd cut sheets for them. I had some preliminary ones that I gave to them prior to hiring, to see if they could grasp what I was trying to do. Once they had the complete .psd cut sheets, they took off with that. We were able to implement what we needed to implement and then figure out the code issues that we needed. Basically, our project is like La-Z-Boy.com; you can look at your sofa and put a piece of fabric on it. On our site, customizable furniture is just one aspect of it.

With over 1,800 different selections, you’re able to do a customization and see that price change in real time, and then have all the technical data available to you at your fingertips, that the architect or interior designer would need in health care design. Users have all this wealth of information, they have the ability to customize, and since we cut out all the middlemen, they're basically dealing factory-direct.

There’s a trend in the factories to do this now, so we’ve got agreements with multiple factories. The ability to bring that visualization software into an e-commerce environment is what Synapse had to get their hands around, and they were able to do that successfully.

How did you come to work with Synapse India?

I discovered them through Elance. I had other contacts outside of that, but Synapse just seemed to be able to address all the points as requested, as opposed to trying to steer me in another direction. It seems most outsourcing people, especially in India, are very channeled in one direction. There’s great production, but no creativity. I was vetting pretty close to 50 companies before I chose Synapse. Out of the 50, there were eight serious contenders. Out of those eight, I sat down and pushed to the next level to try to get more in-depth, and Synapse was one of the four.

I actually look at the most basic feedback, and that is response based on time, and whether they answer questions or not. You have two types of people. One that is overly assertive, that wants your business, and one that just does... Being in architecture and project management in multimillion-dollar developments, I see this all the time. You can tell when somebody knows what they’re doing in their job and responds appropriately. Others are trying to get you so they can get up the ladder.

Synapse was able to offer the appropriate responses, in the appropriate fashion, in an expedient manner; that shined out. All four companies were fairly equal. One was much higher priced, which stood out as a negative, and when it came down to making that final decision, that’s why I decided to go with them. It was their response time. That was the only thing that really stood out when you compared them, from what I could see on my end. Because Elance doesn’t provide a whole lot of information for you to dig into.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

Hard dollars to Synapse, I believe it was close to $20,000. Supporting dollars to get to Synapse is about another $80,000. So total investment around Synapse is close to $100,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We’re still maintaining an ongoing relationship with them. I told them they’re stuck with me now. They’re very happy about that, but it’s like, ‘You guys aren’t going anywhere.’ Actually, I owe them a couple of recliners and I have to fly over to India and pick them up for them.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics or metrics from this engagement?

The only way to measure the quality of work is to perform some internal evaluations, drawing from what I know and what my associates and investors know, but as far as their quality of work, I give them an A+ for delivery. Synapse is a production firm, not an artistic firm. I don’t want to pigeonhole them and say that they can’t do artistic work, but I need to be honest. If you’re going to do anything creative with Synapse, as far as not related to programming, not figuring out how to do programming, if you say, ‘Make me a pretty thunderstorm with red clouds,’ they’ll do it the Indian way, not the American way.

It’s a cultural difference, not an efficiency issue. Some people don’t realize that, and when you look at Elance and you see people that slam people from Pakistan or India because they can’t do what they want... One thing I learned while working in Bangalore is that if you want something implemented with a firm, you need to be extremely clear and concise on what your end goal is and how you’re going to get to that end goal. If you leave that to the firm, it will usually go sideways.

How did Synapse India perform from a project management standpoint?

Regarding project management tools, I was just relying on Synapse. I think people do best when they’re left to their own devices, and not trying to force them into your system. So I adapted to what they were providing me, and their follow-through with the reports and updates never faltered. I think once in two years I reminded them twice, and it was ‘Don’t forget to dot the I and cross the T,’ that’s how complicated it was, but there were no serious errors on their side. If anything, there were a couple of times where I didn’t deliver quick enough, because they are very fast in what they implement.

There was nothing throughout the whole project where I had any serious issues with anybody. I had a total of 6-8 people working on the site at any one time. We always dealt with one project manager, which I really like, because that just gives accountability to one person; there was no shuffling around internally, ‘Well, you need to talk to Joe, that’s his side.’ So if I had an issue with something that I thought could be dialed up or changed, I only had one point of contact.

What distinguishes Synapse India from other providers?

If I had future proposals needed or anything like that, I dealt with Shankar because he’s the project captain for just getting the work, and then the project manager implements the work. It was very nice and fluid in that sense. When I’m communicating, I don’t have to worry about who else I’m talking to, so they handled it in a very professionally structured manner. I think it’s rare to find such adept project managers from Indian providers, so I really appreciated their approach.

Is there anything Synapse India could have improved or done differently?

Not that comes off the top of my head, because we just have such a good system down, where requests are made, and requests are fulfilled. I did not really have any trip-ups with them. If I had not had previous experience in India, I’d probably have a different perception of it. However, having previous experience in India based on other Indian firms, I put them at the top of their game.

**The Review** — Aug 31, 2015

**Feedback Summary**: Synapse has successfully reached every project milestone. They quickly resolved any issues found during a thorough 30-day testing period. Their availability and responsiveness were especially noteworthy, and team even worked on some weekends to perfect the project.
""SynapseIndia was very fast and resilient at addressing things that we needed.""

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We're a business-to-business site. It's a network site that has to do with trading products in the automotive industry.

What is your position?

I am the project manager. I was in charge of the whole project with Synapse India.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

We looked at 35 different companies. The reason why we ended up using them is because they truly understood our work and what we needed to accomplish. I had built this particular application in the past with two other teams. One was an outside consulting team, and the other one was a team that was hired in-house at the company that I was working at. This is the third time I built it, so I knew exactly what was needed. The reason why we moved forward with them was that they really took the time to try to get an understanding on what we were trying to accomplish.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement in more detail.

A hundred percent of the project was given to them. The main technology used was PHP with a MySQL database, jQuery. The graphics team was made up of two people. The whole team was about six or seven people, and we were assigned a project manager.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

We used a third-party site that connected us, and then from there we went through the bidding process. Eventually, we spoke with them through video conferencing and ended up selecting them. Geographically, they were undesirable. I would have preferred them in my city. Cost was the main concern, along with their understanding of what we needed in regard to the development background and tying everything together. Delivery time was important to us, too. They hit three out of the four key criteria.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

We were in the range of $10,000 to $50,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

The most recent milestone was completed three weeks ago [August 2015]. We still have an ongoing project. We actually did three stages with them, along with two upgrades – three websites along with two upgrades. We have another milestone coming up right now.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics, metrics or user feedback from this engagement?

They hit every single benchmark. They were really good. They have a 30-day debugging period. Some companies only offer two weeks of testing. In 30 days, we found some issues that we had missed during the original testing, and they resolved them – no problem. It was nice that they did that. They work every other Saturday, which was nice, too.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

It was a project that was four months on stage one continuous. We had interactions daily via Skype. They were available every day to address issues and accept feedback. We tested daily, and we gave new or revised instructions daily. We were very impressed with their level of availability and responsiveness.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

The speed of how fast they can do things. I've had situations wherein I've hired consulting teams and if we needed to make a small change that takes 10 minutes to code, but it would take an hour just to do the paperwork. SynapseIndia was very fast and responsive at addressing things that we needed. In addition, when details were left out in the scope of work, they just resolved it because it was part of the business.

I've been working in this space for quite a few years, and I was surprised at the things I had left out of the scope of work. Synapse was able to help me fill in the gaps, so that the timeline wasn't slowed down too much. I also really appreciated that.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

I would have liked to video Skype with them. Basically, we're text Skyping our team. It would have been nice to have video Skype, but I understand why they wouldn't. That probably would have been the only thing I would have wanted, the video-Skyping. I figured it was because their written English was superior to their verbal skills, so it was for the sake of efficiency and understanding.

**The Review** — Aug 19, 2015

**Feedback Summary**: Based on internal evaluations from staff and investors, SynapseIndia successfully delivered across the board. One website feature enabled users to customize products before checkout and view updated prices in realtime. The agency's project management was cited as a strong suit during development.
"“[I]t’s rare to find such adept project managers from Indian providers, so I really appreciated their approach.”"

**BACKGROUND**
Please describe your organization.

We're an online support and education resource and network for patients who are going through knee replacement surgery. I'm an orthopedic surgeon, and I designed a website and an iPhone app, heavy into social media, to manage those resources.

What is your position?

I am the CEO of the company.

**OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE**
What business challenge were you trying to address with SynapseIndia?

I used another organization to build the initial iPhone app and website. I would say that I had a poor to fair experience with this previous provider, in the delivery, the timelines, and the quality of their work. That was done under a contract where we had a set price for the entire project. After we finished the entire project, ultimately we were delivered a product that was fairly close to what we were looking for, but on a timeline that was extremely delayed, and I didn't feel comfortable staying with that organization for long-term maintenance and future projects to be done. That's when I sought out other options, and I got in touch with SynapseIndia.

**SOLUTION**
Please describe the scope of their involvement in more detail.

Initially, their scope was very limited, because I didn't know them, and I didn't have specific referrals other than feedback that I got from Elance. I decided to assign them a couple of small projects that I knew I could have control over, and they didn't need a huge amount of access to my core resources, in order to see how they worked. I wanted to get a better experience with an IT [information technology] group than what I had last time. They pretty much delivered exactly as expected, and I continued to grow my level of comfort to the point where they are exclusively managing all of my IT needs for the company.

As I saw their work, it didn't really stop, because it turned out there were a lot of things I needed to get done. There were a lot of things that I needed to have fixed in the infrastructure side of the website. I haven't really had them do any work on the iPhone app, but on the website. As I continued to have them do more infrastructure work, it somewhat snowballed into more work that I wanted to get done.

It started out as maintenance work that I really needed, and there were some core things that I needed to have fixed, that the original development team just didn't code correctly, and it created persistent issues. They were doing a lot of bug fixes. One of the major projects that I did with them, after they had worked a lot on the website, was to redesign the website specifically to become fully responsive. They didn't do necessarily very much change in the design, but they took the entire website, which is kind of complicated and made the entire thing responsive.

How did you come to work with SynapseIndia?

It was through online research. I found them through Elance. I tried finding some local people that potentially could do the kind of work that I needed, but the work that I needed was too complex and sophisticated with too many different systems that needed to be managed. There were no IT people who were local, from people that I knew and could get in touch with. I got a referral, just to go to Elance, from an IT person that I know well.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

I would say probably an initial investment may have been about $2,000 or so for the first few projects.

What is the status of this engagement?

I'm continuing to work with them almost every day. It's been just about daily since I started working with them.

**RESULTS & FEEDBACK**
Could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback from this engagement?

They have been able to deliver on all the things that I've requested from them. They've been successful in everything they've done. Working with IT people, I learned that it's never 100 percent exactly perfect, it's just the reality of it, especially when you embark on a large project. There's always a little bit of stumbling along the way. What I've found is, the best way to measure a company's worth is how they manage those occasional mishaps. Not necessarily whether they hit them or not, but how they manage them. The people I'm working with have been able to manage those very effectively.

How did SynapseIndia perform from a project management standpoint?

I used Elance to oversee their progress. There's a third-party website that allows you to see snapshots of their computer screens every half hour or something like that. You can actually look to see if they're spending time on your project or if there's a screen that may be unrelated. For a very long time, I was reviewing these very diligently. I think I've only denied one screenshot of the thousands that I've looked at. Honestly, I don't look at them very much anymore because I see that they're working on my project.

I can see that the time they're putting in is relatively accurate for what I think it should take to do individual projects. I give them very specific projects, and I can see that the time that they're taking makes sense. I've had probably three or four experiences where I've asked them to give me an estimate, to have a set of what the cost is per hour, and they've been very accurate on those times.

What distinguishes SynapseIndia from other providers?

They'll communicate with me through Skype when they want to talk more directly about certain issues. The thing that I like very much is that every day, through Elance, SynapseIndia gives you an update. They give you a report about what they did all day. They give you screenshots, links, or whatever to show you what they did, and you can give immediate feedback to them.

Every time you send them a response, like, "Hey, this is the thing that I see that you did, and we have to make this change or that change" the very first thing in their morning, they will send you a response telling you that they got it. Then, by the end of their day, they'll send you another message outlining each individual point in your specific response that they've gone over, they've fixed, or they're still pending a fix on. To me, that is very helpful.

Then, like I said, sometimes they'll Skype with me if they want to talk a little bit more. We've done some other things like screen sharing, but that's not very common. We haven't found that we needed it a lot.

I have two project managers: one on the infrastructure side and one on the design side. The actually work is then divvied up to various people, but the work product that comes out is pretty consistent. Having one person as a point of contact, and running the whole show really works for me. I think it's the best way to do it.

Is there anything SynapseIndia could have improved or done differently?

There's always room for improvement. The only thing I can say is I'd love it to be a 100 percent perfect each time, but it's not. That's just the reality of life. If they could improve anything, it would just be always getting it done correctly the first time, but that's not a very significant criticism because they don't have a lot of issues with the coding. Sometimes, they don't get exactly what I'm looking for but, compared to my experience with the last developer, it's much better. It's not a harsh criticism.

We provide a service which performs a specific action if the user does not respond after a certain amount of time. Additionally this system required a dashboard where the admin can view all of the customers activity. The dashboard had a number of features including resetting accounts, and changing the user statuses. The dashboard was hosted on a separate server and communicated with Shopify via requests. There were also a huge number of design changes made to the website along with features that Shopify did not have such as the configuration options for the email system. Summary of DeliverablesCreate a email check-in system which emails the user based on their configured settings. Embed the settings into the Shopify User Page. Create a admin dashboard which allows the admin to login to a dashboard and view all customers and their data. Integrate the email system with MailGun and create a variety of different templates which will send based upon the customers status. Make heavy modifications to the Shopify theme to match desired branding. Create new pages within the customer account page to show a dashboard for customers to see their active products.

### Dominovo
Client wanted us to design and develop a website for an organization into construction business. The website would feature back-end functionalities and an image gallery (in which user can create their account and upload images under suitable categories with description). We designed and developed the website based on the client requirements. The interactive Flash intro page that we created has two buttons - one marked as 'French' and other 'English' - for languages to be selected by the user towards the language of choice in which the website content would get displayed.
