I needed help with the development of apps, using emerging technologies such as VR and AR.

What was the scope of their involvement?

One of the several projects that SLM Software has helped me with was an art musuem project, a self-funded art project that was publicly accessible. At that time, I designed the wireframes for a piece, and they figured out how to structure the process and the project. They experimented with AR and VR technology to acquire the necessary software, which they tested to understand how everything functioned. 

Once this step was done, they got back to me with a complete analysis and explained what was the right way to structure the data. Then, we made a plan and followed the steps until completion. They also took care of publishing the finished project on Apple Store and Play Store and really handled all of the nitty-gritty of app submission.    

What is the team composition?

I worked primarily with Svetlana (Business Manager) and another person. Svetlana did most of the Unity development and research, and the other person was in charge of the data structure and backend.

I found SLM Software through Upwork. I was looking for a developer for this project and I decided to work with them because there was something about the message Svetlana sent and the experience she had that seemed like they would be a good fit for me.

For this specific project, we worked from March–November 2016, but there were other projects that followed.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

First of all, the fact that I was able to release an app that worked and users had a good experience with was a success metric. That’s something that as an independent developer I wouldn't have been able to do, but they were really successful with that. 

On the other hand, whenever I had a project that posed a specific challenge, I knew that if I brought them on board they could help me solve those challenges. I always felt that I was in good hands and that they were available for anything that came up that needed support. Thus, for me, the biggest success was knowing that they were able to solve any challenge while being very diligent, responsive, and helpful.     

How did SLM Software perform from a project management standpoint?

We had very good communication. They provided time estimates for how long the project was going to take and were realistic about them. Every time they needed more time, they communicated and explained the reason to me. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re extremely organized and thorough in researching and understanding challenges and tackling them. They are also very good at analyzing and breaking down an issue and getting to the bottom of it, which is something that I really appreciated. I would say that their problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills are really impressive.  

Are there any areas they could improve?

SLM Software and I never had video meetings in the time we worked together. Therefore, I suggest that they do more parts of the process in face-to-face communication. This is something that I personally would’ve liked, but I don’t know if that’s how they generally operate.   

Any advice for potential customers?

There are many areas that SLM Software can be involved with. Therefore, I recommend that future clients provide as many descriptive explanations of what they want to accomplish and build. Doing so will be helpful to avoid any misunderstandings and waste each other’s time, making sure that everyone is on the same page.
