What challenge were you trying to address with Post Modern Marketing?

We needed to update our branding because we were behind the times in website design, content, and utilization. We also needed a complete redesign of materials including brochures and printed handouts.

What was the scope of their involvement?

The first step was the website design. We have two companies, and I was handling the design for both. We ended up doing a complete redesign of the two websites and got those up and running. We also worked on a blog feature for our website to make it a resource guide for our farmers and growers who had questions.

We currently work with them on a monthly basis. They proofread, edit, and copyright any blog posts that we put up twice per month. The copywriter reads content to ensure the team has written everything professionally and without repetition. He has also reformatted our in-house data to make accessible to the average reader. We have worked together to create updated product brochures, flyers, handouts with all the new branding we have created for the website and logo.

We have also worked with them on the website redesign for the lab side of our company. Emily (Operations & Project Manager, Post Modern Marketing) created an online submittal form, which we didn’t have before. She designed the layout to work with our lab diagnostic needs so we could do online submittals and receive notifications that these samples were coming.

I did a Google search for local agencies in the Valley, as opposed to the Bay area. I met with about four companies, and Post Modern Marketing had the most well-laid out plan. What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

New blog content and email marketing resulted in increased web traffic. We’ve also gotten great feedback on the site’s modern-looking revamp. The online submittal form has streamlined our operations as we continue to reach out to an ever-growing audience.

How did Post Modern Marketing perform from a project management standpoint?

I check in with Josh (Owner, Post Modern Marketing) every six months if not more often. He will ask if the services they are providing are still beneficial or if things need to be renegotiated. He cares about how things are going prioritizes our needs ahead of his own. Only rarely does something slip through.

The assistant manager is great with communication. She always assigns the right person for the bob and provides accurate time frames. The assistant manager ensures everything is proofread and high quality.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We had worked with two other companies prior just for web services, but Post’s timeliness and their response is usually the same day, and maybe within four hours. They honestly care about our success. I don’t feel like it is another retainer that is coming in and keeping them going. If they don’t see projects coming in from us and aren’t seeing us reaching out for anything, they check in to see what they can help us with or if there is anything in the pipeline that they can start prepping for. They care that their customer gets what they pay for.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Over a year ago, we had a slight issue with editing. But they’ve since streamlined the process. Now, I can’t think of anything.

Get to know the main players on the team and pick their brains; they are very open to sharing knowledge. In turn, the team will ask clients questions about their business or processes.

We frequently communicate via email and Google Talk. If something requires immediate attention, they’re great about picking up the phone and talking it through. They’ve also never missed a deadline. We’re often the ones guilty of that discrepancy. Overall, they’re communicative and open to answering questions regarding their services and expectations.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve been in business for 14 years, so our co-owners have seen many developers come and go. We’ve worked with people who drop off the face of the earth when they can’t solve our problems our answer a question. That isn’t our experience with Post Modern Marketing. They’re responsive and we can count on them to deliver projects within the agreed upon deadline. Their ability to consistently complete difficult tasks makes them a valuable partner. I’m not sure what everyone’s technical titles are because their whole team shares the workload. They’re all willing to do what is needed to be done.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We experienced a learning curve when initially utilizing Google Talk. As the senior project manager, I found it difficult to immediately respond to their questions if, for example, the issue revolved around design and not project management. Therefore, I’d recommend that they grant future clients more flexibility in communication as they may have multiple projects going on simultaneously.

Establish clear expectations regarding scope, deliverables, and deadlines from the beginning. This way, everyone is on the same page about what is required for a successful project.

We are one of the top websites in our area in the region. The vast majority of our keywords rank on the first page in spots 1–5. We’ve obtained our goals and are now in a maintenance phase.

We’re happy with the way they’ve structured client communications. We can address any issues, concerns, or high-level questions to the project manager. It also helps to have contact with someone on the execution side.

They have a couple of options for project management tools, but we allow them to handle that on their side. As long as they complete everything by the dates we request, we’re happy to take a hands-off approach. They’ve earned our trust and we know they’ll get things done.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’re very satisfied with their communication and their ability to meet deadlines. Their owner encouraged us to focus on long-term goals instead of short-term results. That process has helped us avoid costly issues and stay on target.

For SEO work in general, understand that this is a long-term, dynamic process. Things are always changing, and it’s important to trust your original plan and stick with it for several years. You will have excellent results if you persevere.

They’ve brought in so much business that we almost can’t keep up with it. The blog component of our new site was another thing we weren’t expecting to embrace, but it’s paid off quite a bit in terms of keeping us current. Additionally, the SEO work improved our search rank and brought our organic search traffic rate through the roof. We’re now at the top when anyone searches for post-secondary or trade schools. Even without any spending on Google AdWords or Facebook ads, we’ve been able to pull in a tremendous amount of new traffic just by optimizing the website.

How did Post Modern Marketing perform from a project management standpoint?

They’ve under-promised and over-delivered. They’re prompt with deadlines, their customer service is top-notch, and they strike a nice balance between professional and personable. You walk in the door to meet with them and they feel like family. They’re generous with advice and someone is always ready to attend to our needs. For example, their copywriter isn’t only good with words, he’s diligent about incorporating keywords into his posts and he always contacts me asking for new topics to write about. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with their pace, but it’s reassuring to know that they care about keeping our business thriving.

What did you find most impressive about them?

One thing I admire about them is that they won’t take on other clients that might compete in your region and industry. That policy was laid out in their contract, and the whole document was very clean and straightforward.

I also appreciate how well they accommodated our budget needs as an educational institution. We hit a funding snag partway through the initial project and they found a way to bring the monthly fee down about a thousand dollars so we could keep working with them.

Trust their expertise. It took us a little while to reach that point, but it’s paid off immensely.

The technically-sound backend they developed complements the unique design concepts they integrated on the frontend. Content from the old site was edited and posted on the new website. They also helped us find a photographer to take new staff photos for the site. The website is complete, but they continue to supply our web hosting.

Their internal management skills didn’t translate well when collaborating with our team. We spent an exorbitant amount of time on simple tasks because they failed to give detailed instructions. Although we experienced a few setbacks, they were patient, communicative, and determined to get the project back on schedule.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We worked exceptionally well together. I sent them a flurry of emails each day, but their responsiveness never waned.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Give more details when delegating work to clients. Finding photos for the website should have been a simple task, but it became a drawn-out assignment because they didn’t clarify what type of images were needed or where to find them.

Their electronic contract provider also caused a few customer service blunders. We expressed that we needed to hold off on signing the contract, but we continued to receive constant reminders to authorize the document.

They took us from having zero online presence to operating on a successful website in a short amount of time. Post Modern Marketing’s SEO efforts established our client-base and solidified us as a viable firm. We regularly received 10 leads a day through the website. This enabled us to start choosing clients more selectively. Honestly, they’re like magicians. We would’ve never been successful without their help.

Billboards and radio ads are expensive marketing tools that barely work. When people need a lawyer, they go online and find one. Josh’s understanding of search engine rankings kept us at the top of relevant searches for at least a year. Colleagues would comment how frequently our firm appeared in their legal-related searches. John’s consistent blog posts were also a contributing factor to this success. He diligently crafted content that was vital to our continued prosperity.

How did Post Modern Marketing perform from a project management standpoint?

They were tenacious in their efforts to get regular correspondence from me. While working on multiple cases at once, remembering to respond to emails isn’t my strongest quality. They politely reminded me to review deliverables and kept the project moving forward. I appreciated that I never had to pursue them for anything. They were always available.

What did you find most impressive about them?

After speaking with several service providers before Post Modern Marketing, we expected this process to be costly. As a new business, this concerned us. Josh is different in that he cared about what we were trying to do and was willing to work within the budget we had available at the time. I don’t know of another professional that would freely empower us with the information they could easily covet. He went beyond our expectations and performed tasks outside of the scope agreement.

They're very capable and keep an open line of communication with us. We trust them and feel they're spending our money wisely. We usually communicate via phone, email, and Skype. They're very responsive. If I call them at 11 p.m., they answer and fix the issue that same night.

We appreciate their integrity, competency, and personable approach.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They're a growing company and have a lot of clients, so sometimes it takes them a while to get things done. They're working very hard, but if they hired more people, their turnaround times would be a little quicker.
