I’m the marketing communications manager for one division of a large manufacturing group based out of Taiwan. My sector basically provides a range of projectors: from small to large, for any size room, and for any application.

What challenge were you trying to address with Osom Studios?

Over the past years, we’ve started to augment our product portfolio. With new products, we’ve had to go beyond our comfort zone in different marketing campaigns.

We initially hired them to implement videos, brochures, and applications for a tiny new mobile projector. This was a consumer product, so we needed to muster more marketing power than what we typically do for our B2B products. That was one of the first projects they helped us with. They've now been our go-to marketing partner for the launches of different products.

What was the scope of their involvement?

While it depends on the project, we usually ideate a strategy together. They’re not necessarily familiar with the Audio/Video (AV) market, so the initial stages are typically collaborative. Other times, we’d begin with a clear briefing and co-develop the strategy.

While we began with much more traditional forms of marketing—like email and print communications—their service offering has recently expanded to include digital content. They’ve also managed the entirety of our social media. Our website is becoming outdated, so we’re looking to revamp that next year with them.  

What is the team composition?

We have a dedicated, full-time account manager, who serves as a complete extension of our own team. We also have a social media manager assigned to us. Out total interface is with about 2­–3 people, and they delegate the tasks accordingly to their huge pool of designers.

How did you come to work with Osom Studios?

My colleague, who’s from Poland, was looking for Polish agencies. They provide a very competitive rate for creative services, despite the great quality of their work. It didn’t make sense to look for a Dutch agency (our branch is based in the Netherlands) since we’d be communicating in English, anyway.

How much have you invested with them?

We spend around $20,000 a month with them, although this rate fluctuates depending on the project. We also pay them for Google Ads and other supplementary services.

What is the status of this engagement?

We began working together sometime in 2014, and have a strong ongoing relationship.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The quality of their work has been perfect. We’d be completely lost without them; it’d be utter chaos. They’ve provided great materials and product introductions, and have excelled at maintaining our social channels. They’ve also been absolutely easy to work with.

Although we give them small budgets to work with—and not much creative freedom—they’ve been able to develop attractive and effective marketing tools. They’ve made sure to optimize available resources to pump out the best products.

How did Osom Studios perform from a project management standpoint?

We used Basecamp as our collaborative project management tool, and it’s worked great for us. It allows us to track project progress in a really transparent way. They’re communicative, and chase us down to make sure we’re on track. Any roadblocks are always due to our own delays, which they work to remediate. We’re really thankful for their proactivity.

What did you find most impressive about them?

We’ve worked with them for 4­­­–5 years now, and they’ve continued to be extremely dedicated. They continue to add fresh new faces to their team while maintaining continuity and the same level of enthusiasm. While it’s normal to wear out an agency after working with them for a couple of years, it still feels like we just started with them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything on their side. Most of the room for improvement lies with us and not their initiative.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

I highly recommend them. On the other hand, I’d love to keep them a secret, because they do excellent work and I know that they’re growing rapidly.

OSOM STUDIO has supported us on many small marketing projects. Most recently, they organized an event where my company presented a mission-critical infrastructure product. We brought in individuals from influential companies to discuss IoT and the future of the mission-critical power supply era.

OSOM STUDIO did everything for the event, from designing the brochure’s layout to finding a venue that would support 100 guests. They also provided the projectors and video solutions, created marketing collateral, translated documents, and did social media marketing (SMM).

We had recently rebranded and needed to develop a clean, modern website that would demonstrate our values well. While a lot of information needed to be available on the site, it was important that the site appeals to new clients, HR executives in large corporations, potential candidates for positions we’re trying to fill, and our employees. I originally planned on using another company that had designed our logo and brand book, but they were expensive. What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Since the site went live, we’ve received a lot of positive feedback. We were able to achieve all of our goals, so I am very satisfied with their work. We are now planning to hire OSOM STUDIO to meet our marketing needs, create graphics, and design printed materials.

How did OSOM STUDIO perform from a project management standpoint?

From the beginning of our partnership, we communicated very well and I really enjoyed working with them. We spent several workshops discussing what we wanted to achieve, and they listened and incorporated our input while brainstorming ideas.

While we visited their office and had a few face-to-face meetings, I received daily updates through Basecamp and always knew which tasks they were working on. This also really helped me know what they expected from me.

We've consistently increased traffic to the website while improving the quality of our visitors. We get one or two leads each week, and their quality is constantly improving. We regularly acquire leads for projects from $100 to $10,000 and higher.

My company’s name is Wimb. It develops GPS trackers for bicycles. It’s installed inside the frame of a bike, so we can retrieve the bike when stolen.

I am the Owner and Director at Wimb.

What business challenge were you trying to address with OSOM Studio?

I asked them to develop applications for both iOS and Android. We will build on different platforms in the future, but not now since most consumers in Europe and the US use Apple users.

SOLUTION

I have one in-house developer who made the basic GPS tracker. OSOM Studio was asked to speak with this developer to take what he had created and make it work with the application OSOM Studio was making.

How did you come to work with OSOM Studio?

My developer is from the same city in Poland as OSOM Studio. They knew each other previously.

Could you provide a sense of the size of this initiative in financial terms?

The project was about $3,500. We were happy because development took more than a month and was still within our budget.

What is the status of this engagement?

We have finished our first version, which is available right now. We just recently finished the second version, which was just put on the App Store, with a planned release tomorrow for Android. We will continue to work with OSOM Studio for future updates.

How did OSOM Studio perform from a project management standpoint?

OSOM Studio performed well in project management. They were good at taking what I communicated that I needed and turning it into a quality product. Their turnaround time was great as well.

Is there anything OSOM Studio could have improved or done differently?

I can’t think of anything. I have worked with a number of providers who were able to deliver what I was hoping for. OSOM Studio was great with communication, which helped make sure that what I wanted was what I got.

Please describe your organization.

My company is primarily centered in the message space specifically for mobile on iOS. We do what’s called content-driven messaging, the idea that you don’t have to cold message people similarly to how you do on Facebook or Instagram or any messaging application where the conversations starts by you having to message the person. 

We flip that cold message concept around and, say based on this content that you’re sharing on this network, or these photos, videos, and so on, people when they comment on the stuff, and it turns into a private messaging string. So, it feels like a texting string, but it’s really based on network. 

What is your role and responsibilities?

I’m CEO. I also decide features and design for the core product.

What was your goal for working with appreal.net?

We had a few options when we were starting out. Our core team has a lot of the technical background. It became clear that we needed to focus on design UX/UI [user experience/user interface] and really decide what the product was going to be and then iterate on that as quickly as possible.

It really made sense for my role to shift away from doing development and become a product manager. We were looking for firms that could grow with us and iterate the product as quickly as possible until we got something that people would want and need.

We did a lot of the work because we’re a technical team. We outsourced the front end.

What was your process for selecting appreal.net with which to work?

We started out looking in India because of the price point. Unfortunately, the quality wasn’t there with the firms that we were testing. So we moved to Eastern European countries and Poland seemed to have the best English speakers.

We came across Appreal. We contacted 10 different firms and they were in the price point that made sense for us. We started a small project, which went pretty well. We knew they were motivated to make exactly what we wanted happen. 

Appreal isn’t willing to cut corners and it was still a relatively fair pricing model for us. We chose to go with them. We found them through an Internet search.

Can you give a sense of the size of the initiative in dollar terms or a personnel work-hour figure?

The project is larger than most projects. It was 1.200 hours, but I cannot give the dollar amount.

When was the work completed?

We just launched a couple of months ago. It’s ongoing work. We’re focusing on stabilizing the product now instead of trying to add updates. We’ve been working together for one year.

Are you satisfied with their performance?

I thought their work was pretty good. We did work with two developers there. Each of them had their own core competencies. One was an extremely proficient UI [user interface] developer. The other was more technical – better with the core of the code. 

I think they have a lot of talent that’s specialized. I also think they know how to manage and group together to get projects done so that everybody that works on a particular project is really able to work on what they’re extremely good at completing.

We’ve had a really positive experience with them. They’ve been able to execute everything we’ve wanted them to execute. They’re good at understanding the product. 

Is there anything unique or special about appreal.net that really makes them stand out compared to other business partners?

They’re really invested in the product. You don’t get that feeling from most offshore teams. We feel like they cared about this project. They were really willing to work with us and make product suggestions and improvements. 

What advice would you give to future clients of theirs?

I would probably say the more you know what you want before you start the project – the more clearly you can communicate that, the better. They’ll take that and run with it. A lot of people when they’re outsourcing come in with just an idea. You’re setting yourself up for failure if you do that without thinking through what you want. 

We were able to get up and go quickly because we knew what we wanted. Another thing would be to start with smaller implementations. Don’t try to set expectations to build the whole project in three months. We split up the project in four parts. We added features and screens and maintained what we want the core of the product to do. 

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or that you might do differently?

The only frustrating part we had with them is probably true of every firm in Poland and that’s vacation. They have a lot of vacation.
