BACKGROUND

Could you briefly describe your organization?

I work for an online insurance broker. Our focus is educating people about the sort of insurance they might need, given their unique circumstances. Our services range from life insurance, to disability insurance, pet insurance, rent insurance, and various other personal lines. So, the first step is educating people about what they need, and helping them shop for it online.

What is your position?

I’m the chief technology officer.

Could you describe the business challenges that you were attempting to address when you first approached Netguru?

We’re a relatively new startup, we’re about a year old now in terms of our product development. We needed to organize our technical team, with high-quality Ruby on Rails programmers. We previously had a different engagement with another outsourcing firm, and that wasn’t as successful. As a result, we turned to Netguru, who I’d known from working in the industry, and they helped us add three developers to our team for about six months.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement.

It was more on the development side. Internally, we have a chief of design that was responsible for all the user experience and user interface elements. I was acting as the technical lead on the project. The three developers from Netguru were working on some backend functionalities and also some front-end implementation work. It was sort of a mix, but it was mostly the implementation rather than the design. They took part in some of the quality assurance testing, too.

How did you choose Netguru as your partner for this endeavor?

I’d know about them already from industry exposure. I’ve seen some of their blog articles, and some of their contributions to open source projects. When I was doing research on outsourcing partners, they were one of the firms that came up. It made sense to reach out to them.

How long was the engagement, and when was it completed?

Project length was six months. We finished at the end of September of 2014.

In terms of results, could you share any statistics, metrics, or user feedback that would demonstrate the quality of their performance?

When we started with them, we basically had an information website and that’s it. We had the content and the basic design requirements. We started building our main app with them. In six months, we were able to go live with our product, from nothing to a fully functional product that was featured in the New York Times. We’ve gotten a variety of positive feedback regarding the simplistic usability of the solution.

We worked with them as a blended team, so there wasn’t any form of strict scope. We were committed to agile. As we went, they learned more about the project, we learned more about the project, and we kept improving incrementally. Their project management skills were excellent, and the communication was superb. They always delivered on their deadlines, and either met or almost always exceeded our expectations. It’s a great working relationship.

When working with Netguru, is there anything that you’d consider unique about their approach compared to other vendors?

One of the things that we’ve found very useful was the way in which they’ve trained their developers and contractors. They take people straight out of college, and even sometimes during college, that they then train as juniors. We were able to add a couple of juniors to our project sort of in training, as part of their service, free of charge. You could really tell the benefit of having good quality, and free resources are always a plus. They’re very good at educating their teams on best practices, and they know when to advise companies like us, when there are things we could or should be doing another way.

In retrospect, are there any areas in which you think they could improve as a service provider?

No. We’re ecstatic with them and their work.

The ability for buyers and sellers to be able to find each other, get a matching score, establish a match, and to contact each other. That listings could be created and dynamic matching is happening. That users could sign up and get started without blockers

Netguru has build a new landing page including a complex registration form. In paralel Netguru has provided HTML code for an existing landing page - the implementation has been done in house.

2700 contacts left through the registration form. This is 70% of the total market.
