It started with a few interviews and a discovery phase where they tried to understand how we actually work, not just on paper.
Then they did a full AI readiness audit: looked at our repos and workflows, talked to engineers 1:1, checked what tools we use, or don’t use, identified where we lose time. 
We got a report, pretty detailed, but easy to follow, with where we stand now, what to fix first, how to approach AI adoption in engineering teams.
Then they ran AI training workshops split by level (which helped a lot), very hands-on, not theoretical, used our real tasks, not fake examples.
After that they shared AI guidelines + best practices and stayed available for questions.

We saw quick traction: most engineers started using AI tools consistently (a few low-performers were fired), a noticeable improvement in developer productivity, and faster execution of routine tasks. And now we have a better understanding of where AI-powered software engineering actually works.
Also, we now have a clearer structure for scaling AI usage across teams.

We brought Honeycomb in as a specialist subcontractor to handle the AI infrastructure layer for our client. They designed and implemented a Kubernetes-based deployment of an open-source LLM within the client’s private AWS environment, with scale-to-zero behaviour to minimise GPU infrastructure costs during low-usage periods.

The following was provided: 

• MLOps architecture design and environment setup 
• CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows for repeatable, automated model deployments 
• Kubernetes/GPU node management and autoscaling policies (including scale-to-zero) 
• Inference observability: metrics, logs, and alerting for performance monitoring 
• Operational runbooks and a structured handover for our internal team

Our client now has a compliant, production-ready self-hosted LLM capability running entirely within their UK AWS environment with no external API dependencies and no data leaving their infrastructure. 
The scale-to-zero autoscaling strategy significantly reduced idle GPU costs for the client, and the inference observability stack gives them full visibility to manage the platform confidently in production.  
 From our side, their clean handover and documentation made the integration seamless.

Their production mindset. Many vendors can deploy a model, but few think through the operational layer that makes it sustainable: release pipelines, GPU autoscaling, observability, and runbooks. Honeycomb treated these as first-class deliverables, not afterthoughts, which reflected well on us as the primary delivery partner. 
The quality of their handover documentation also stood out. Our client’s team could operate and extend the platform independently from day one. That kind of knowledge transfer is rare and made a real difference to the client relationship.

Nothing significant. The initial scoping took a few rounds of alignment, but that was partly driven by the complexity of our client’s compliance requirements. Once scope was locked, the execution was smooth and we’d have no hesitation subcontracting Honeycomb again.

The communication was clear. They were flexible in terms of allocation of resources and how we could make slight changes to the scope of the work and reach agreeable solutions within the consdtraints of the contract. Great working relationship. Overall really positive.

It took a little bit of back and forth to agree the scope of the contract and pricing in the first instance, however this was nothing more than an early teething problem in terms of making sure we were on the same page around scope and budget. That really was the only sticking point and it was a minor one at that. Once we had reached an agreement, everything ran smoothly.

Responsive, fast, and highly professional.

They work very hard and don't argue or complain. If they disagree with an implementation, the group offers their opinions and proposed changed, but always allow the business stake holders the ultimate say on what drives the technology.

For smaller groups, their insight is highly valuable and they are always willing to provide best practices and offer innovative solutations. They anticipate tech gaps and work to bridge them. The team also balances "perfect states" with "business realities" and understand that reconfiguring everything is not always an option and that sometimes it is best to work with the existing infrastructure and improve what they can due to business demands (budget, time, company objectives). This is unique in the development space and exceptionally uncommon for consultants, where the incentive is normally to change everything and bloat expenses and timelines.

This is an A team. They were there for us when we needed them most and we are extraordinarily grateful for their hard work, expertise, and professionalism.

Software Requirements Specification for GrowerInTheLoop Customer Portal:

1. Background and Context: GrowerInTheLoop is a service tailored for the cannabis industry, focusing on cannabis cultivation facilities and growers. The primary audience includes Master Growers, cultivation staff, operations managers, and cultivation facility owners. The service offers a maturity model report to attract customers, aiming to evolve into a platform offering online services, software, and training materials. A critical component of this service is the development of a customer portal. Additional information about GrowerInTheLoop can be found at GrowerInTheLoop.com.
2. Business Requirements for Customer Portal:
   1.  Authentication and Account Management: Clients must be able to register and sign in using their company email, name, and company name. Initial sign-in must be straightforward but must incorporate multi-factor authentication. Clients should have self-service capabilities for password changes and account updates. Clients must have the option to delete their account, which will remove the account from the identity provider (likely Azure Active Directory) without deleting internal information captured in the portal. 
   2. Account Settings and Information Accessibility: Each client account should include complete contact information. The portal should provide two tiers of information: Free services, products, and information accessible to all members. Exclusive content and services for individual clients. Clients should not be able to share their exclusive content in the initial version. The portal should offer downloadable content and applications accessible within the portal. 
   3. Payment Processing: The portal must securely process credit card payments using a major U.S. payment processor (e.g., Stripe). - We chose not to implement this yet. 
   4. Administrator Access and Content Management: Administrators should be able to view client information, excluding sensitive data like passwords and credit card numbers. Administrators must be able to upload content, designate it as free or paid, and receive notifications and transaction details for client purchases.
3. Technical Requirements:
   1. Infrastructure and Development Environment: The portal will be hosted on an Azure Subscription, with access provided to necessary team members. Development should utilize the latest version of .NET in C#, React for client UI elements, and an Azure SQL database.
   2. Architecture and Design: The solution should include both an API and a Web Front End. The software architecture should prioritize extensibility and maintainability. Given the expected user scale, a simple monolithic solution is preferred.
   3. Source Code Management and Deployment: The codebase should be hosted on Azure DevOps, with a project set up and team access provided. Integration with Azure Subscription for CI/CD processes should be leveraged.
   4. Project Management Approach: An agile methodology is preferred, with flexibility regarding daily standups and sprint structures. Emphasis should be placed on documentation and communication of work progress. Dependencies on the availability of the project initiator should not impede progress.

  • Measurable Outcome: The portal provides an intuitive interface for clients to access both free and exclusive content. Success can be measured by user engagement metrics, such as the number of downloads and application usage, aiming for at least 80% of registered users actively using the portal monthly. 
• Robust Administrator Access and Content Management: 
  • Measurable Outcome: Administrators should be able to efficiently manage content and view client information, excluding sensitive data. Success is measured by the capability to update content within 24 hours of a request and a system that notifies administrators of significant client activities. 
• Reliable Infrastructure and Development Environment: 
  • Measurable Outcome: The portal is consistently operational and hosted on an Azure Subscription with minimal downtime. Success is indicated by an uptime of 99.9% and the capacity to scale resources within 24 hours in response to demand. 
• Optimal Architecture and Design: 
  • Measurable Outcome: The portal's architecture supports extensibility and maintainability, measured by the time required for feature updates (target: within one week for minor updates) and the time taken to resolve reported issues (target: within 48 hours for critical issues). 
• Effective Source Code Management and Deployment: 
  • Measurable Outcome: A functioning CI/CD pipeline with GitHub integration is established. Success is indicated by the ability to deploy updates with minimal downtime and a deployment error rate of less than 2%.

Project management was handled well via email and communication through Microsoft Teams. Project status was reported regularly, and detailed project breakdown was tracked and related directly to billing.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Honeycomb Software took a deep interest in the project, wanted to understand the business requirements, user requirements, and often made welcomed suggestions around alternative approaches to the implementation and development. Overall, I think they did an excellent job of communicating and letting me know that they understood my intent.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Honeycomb Software could have done differently?

No, every step of the way I was able to make decisions based on great information from the team. This kept the project from going out of scope and over budget.
