Our small business approached Emote Digital when we were let down by a marketing individual. We emphasised to the team that it was imperative for us to generate leads (many of them!) and ensure that our website was optimised. We also needed them to obtain our website from the marketing individual who was witholding all login details, and upon doing so we needed the team to update our website. Ultimately, our primary emphasis to Emote Digital weas to ensure that leads were coming in and that our website was optimised.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

At this early stage, our website is almost as we need it to look. We are yet to discuss how our first ad campaign has fared at this stage however we have received some leads already since the ad campaign began.

Emote Digital have been extremely responsive to us whenever we need to query something or come up with a new idea. We came to Emote with a high level of stress and anxiety after our experience with the marketing individual who was previously marketing for us. The team was empathetic to our situation and understood how important it was to us to get leads with minimum downtime, all whilst maintaining our ad campaigns and SEO. Further, the team were able to get our first ad campaign up and running prior to Christmas holidays and get our website to where we wanted it to be.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

The owner of Emote Digital was extremely knowledgeable and completely transparent about processes and the way he runs his business, which we appreciated immensely. In addition, when we met with the team for onboarding, we were met by all individuals who would work on our project, which made us feel like we were being heard and that it was important for them all to understand what was important to us for our business from a digital marketing perspective. Since that time, each individual who has worked on different aspects of our project has been completely treansparent in how they are doing things and what they are doing.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Emote Digital could have done differently?

At this early stage, no. However I feel that if there was something we felt they could improve or do differently, if we raised it with Emote Digital, they would be responsive to our feedback.

Emote was selected to redesign and build a completely new website that would match our updated brand, be mobile friendly and support the customer journey for multiple user types involving a reasonably large number of stock keeping units, as well as a members section. Our website at the time was outdated, off brand and built with an ecommerce format. Our users struggled to find key information about our products efficiently. We had a vision of our website becoming more of a hub and resource for our plumbing/trade consumers.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The website design was created and executed on brand. It elevated our existing digital presence and aligned with the transformation we were executing ourselves across other channels. The user journey was mapped out accurately, and the site developed in a way that our product information is accessible, for all stages of the customer journey. The 'Tradie Hub' allows members to find, save and share information about our products efficiently and enables us to provide valuable content to members easily. Mobile user engagement metrics improved almost immediately, and feedback as been very positive on the new site design as well as the information presented.

Project Management from emote was effective and efficient. At the start of the process their discovery sessions were detailed and valuable for all parties. The design phase was intricate, with Emote ensuring all our needs were met. The use of sprints made it transparent what work was needed, when and by who. Weekly WIP calls with the project lead meant I had constant communication on project status and task requirements. If I had specific questions, relevant team members would be added to these calls to help extract information and form plans. And then when testing commenced we moved to using their Trello board to track task status and provide feedback, which meant I had visibility across all items at any given time.

I was most impressed with how they were able to anticipate our needs and articulate changes to us in a way that always came back to our user journey and the ultimate goal we had set for our website.

We had some issues with QA process during testing phase early on, but these were identified and rectified by Emote management quickly. I always felt that they constantly worked internally to ensure we got the best result possible.

Emote was brought in to help fix our poorly designed and built website and help us excel in the digital space. We had a loyal customer base but as we were relying on organic growth, we were growing online at a snail's pace. The first deliverable was to rebuild the back end of the website. The issues were due to the inexperience of our previous web developer.

We later decided to rebrand the entire site as it was easier to start again. The second deliverable was to introduce a quality UX onto the site. We later decided the best way to do this was to schedule the work with a total rebrand of the site. The third deliverable was to introduce an SEO and SEM strategy.

From the SEO and SEM strategy, we attained new growth through an increase in online sales. We will be launching a new rebranded site next month so I expect through the improved design and UX we will also experience online sales growth.

I’m the IT project manager of Brown Family Wine Group, a private, family-owned wine company.

What challenge were you trying to address with Emote Digital?

We’re a very traditional business and we’re a little slow on the digital curve. We needed to get serious about the direct-to-consumer digital economy and we needed to coordinate our efforts for direct-to-consumer offline and digital. There was a lot of inconsistency between what we were doing in digital and in our offline space.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They developed WordPress WooCommerce websites. We needed them to work within our requirements regarding product management, site management, and the functionality of templates, navigation, and mobility. UX was a big factor with regard to the simplicity of design and navigation. We wanted a fast, effective, simple customer experience.

We took the requirements to them and they worked with us, then came back and presented ideas to us. We eventually locked down a set of designs and built the sites. One of the requirements across our four websites was to simplify our ongoing maintenance and upgrades. We adopted a template approach across our four branded websites, using common elements such as navigation, headers, footers, and page structures.

They did a lot of work on MailChimp for us. They have some social media and digital marketing people who specialize in remarketing and email campaigns. We’ve had them do quite a bit of work.

We also asked them to make each of the sites shine individually. On the surface, it seems like an impossible requirement when you say you need the sites standardized and also need them to shine and really promote your own brand. They were able to achieve that.

We signed up for a maintenance retainer. They patch WordPress and WooCommerce for any vulnerabilities. We also buy a development pack from them quarterly and on-demand. If we have an increase in work around some competitions or events, we may buy additional development hours from them.

What is the team composition?

My point of contact is Brendon (Digital Project Director, Emote Digital). He coordinates with the development team and the designers to bring the build together. Indirectly, we dealt with some of the broader team, as well as Boyd (Director, Emote Digital), one of the partners, and Matt (Digital Marketing Director, Emote Digital) who helped us with MailChimp integration as well as helping us set up templates and automation.

If Brendon isn’t available, anyone else we deal with is consistent with Brendon.

How did you come to work with Emote Digital?

They were recommended to us.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $100,000-$150,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in March 2018 and the work is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re satisfied that the sites individually promote their own brand and have their own brand personality. I don’t think the sites appear to be cookie cutter websites out of the same factory.

We get a lot of positive feedback from our own group. We did some informal surveying. Our customer service team, which deals directly with consumers, has had emails and phone calls with positive feedback. The simple navigation has enabled users to find what they’re looking for.

We had some requirements around shipping where you have to have a minimum of six bottles of wine in a cart to check out. If you go over six, you need to have increments of six. There were some other rules around special mixed packs and more. Some of our team members thought that would be a barrier to shopping for customers, but thanks to the support of our design, we haven’t had any negative feedback on that at all. From a UX point of view, it’s really easy and obvious from the outset on how to shop. No one is shocked at the checkout and then ends up abandoning it.

They delivered one of the sites in October and the other two in November. The fourth website will launch in the next few weeks.

How did Emote Digital perform from a project management standpoint?

They follow an agile methodology and break work into sprints. Brendon and I would discuss priorities and work out a schedule with regard to sprints. I held a weekly phone call with him to review progress and upcoming deliverables. They’d have workshops when we needed to do a deep dive into requirements or design on a particular site or sprint. They use Trello and other tools to track their work. They invited us onto their Trello board so we could see their progress.

I had a very honest conversation with Brendon early on about playing the partner role rather than being a paid supplier.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They focus on customer requirements and honor them. If Brendon felt we were putting a requirement on the table that didn’t make sense or could be done a lot better, he’d consult with us on it. He’s brave enough to challenge me on that. We’re really pleased with them.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They follow a formal methodology, but the reporting around that wasn’t always given to me. However, I could get access to it very quickly.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Understand your core objectives, your project requirements, and what the problem is you’re trying to solve. Be really clear on your expectations around delivery and timelines. Make sure they have the capacity to meet your needs.
