I'm the CEO of Whos My Mutter, which is an app that lets people determine the dominant breed of their dog using a facial recognition feature.

I had an idea for an app, but I didn't know where to start, so I was looking for a company to build the app for me.

What was the scope of their involvement?

I had an initial conversation with their salesman and we discussed my ideas. After that, they began building the app, managing both the design and the development. It's a unique app that is compatible with both iOS and Android. In addition to the facial recognition feature, the app allows users to search for rescue shelters within a 50-mile radius anywhere in the world. CMOLDS continues to provide ongoing support and marketing services.

I worked directly with the salesman and my project manager, who was also the developer. I'm now working with their marketing specialist as well.

How did you come to work with them?

I put a post on Facebook and someone referred me to CMOLDS. I researched their name and then flew to New Jersey to meet with them.

I spent $56,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

I started working with them in February 2017 and the app launched in December 2017.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

I'm just starting to get feedback on the app, which is usually coming from people who are not using the app correctly. We have a tutorial, which tells users how they need to take photos. If they don't follow directions, they don't get the right results. Typically, I respond to them and explain the correct way to use the app.

How did they perform from a project management standpoint?

They executed everything on time and even worked overnights when they were out of the country. We usually used email and phone to stay in touch.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They went above and beyond to meet my needs. I didn't communicate all of my needs clearly at the beginning of our engagement, so we were expanding their scope of work as we were moving along. They were very accommodating the entire time and went out of their way to develop an app they can be proud of.

Are there any areas they could improve?

The only thing is that sometimes it took them a little longer to get back to me than I would have wished.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Be honest with them and clearly communicate what you want to build. Make sure everyone is on the same page from the very beginning. I didn't ask enough questions and didn't understand the scope of work like I should have, but they made it right.

They developed the framework for the various styles of questions in my trivia app.  Time constraints were not met unfortunately as communication is not their strength.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Not much success.  They took way too long and the product that came out was not what was asked for despite the extra time.  It was supposed to be a Canadian company but it ended up overseas.  As they passed the project along to new people they did not communicate with each other.  I was given redundant charges and seriously overpaid.

Timing was always behind and their is a communication barrier because of different first languages.   I had to do the landing page myself and was still charged.

Communicate among themselves as opposed to me re-eplaining the whole project once a new person comes aboard.

We partnered with CMOLDS from the very beginning, from the initial concepts to the beta build, testing, and production. They managed the entire building process. The team delivered logos, pitch decks, wireframes, prototypes, and the final app.

We found them through an online search. They had high ratings, their pricing fit our budget, and they seemed professional.

So far, we've spent $10,000–$50,000.

We started working with them in October 2024, and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We successfully created an app that is complex and functional. It's still a few weeks from going live. However, from our testing, it's functional in the way we initially intended.

How did CMOLDS perform from a project management standpoint?

At the beginning of the project, we struggled with communication. However, Safwan, our project manager, was moved to be our project manager, and it went very smoothly after that. We're behind schedule, but it's not due to the project management. We initially thought the app would take 3–6 months to develop, but we faced a few hurdles in complexity and feature requests. However, CMOLDS hasn't rushed the project, and we don't have major time constraints to get it live.

We communicate via virtual meetings, emails, and messaging apps.

What did you find most impressive or unique about them?

I'm impressed by how they're open about what's possible and the complexity of building. They're eager to build in a way that creates the best user experience. Safwan is an excellent Project Manager and I would be happy to work with them again.

Are there any areas they could improve?

My only recommendation is for the team's communication and messaging platform (Teamwork). It's very difficult to see what they're working on, find old messages, and find documents. I think if they use a better project management application, it would provide better collaboration and visibility on what's going on.

So far, the screen design has come good. Can't wait for the final working product and to test it out with users. The team communication has been good as far as the screen design is concerned.

A map was created along with GPS to allow the consumer to see the location of the nanny. The consumers would be able to pay the fees through the app. Nannies would be able to login to the app to apply for position, select availability and cash out on services.

For a person who does not know anything about building an app, I think it would have been beneficial for them to tell you all the additions that you will need to pay for in the process of building. My original quote was given, however as the process progressed there were a numerous number of additions that needed to be added. Many you are not to have an effective application without. That becomes a little stressful to a budget.

We meet with CMOLDS and developed the project key deliverables and timeline. Then we scoped out the details behind each deliverable and verified accuracy for our initial timelines and adjusted as necessary. We solved many technical issues together but feel we have worked together to create something special.

We all have things we can continue to do better at. I think one thing that they could continue to work on is communicating with the technology people on the project as much as the creative people.
