What challenge were you trying to address with TuneLAB?

I needed help developing a web application for writers and maintaining and improving another long-standing website.

What was the scope of their involvement?

TuneLAB built a complex community website and fixed bugs and updated another long-standing website. The team has carried out numerous tasks successfully. The technologies used include: Amazon Web Services (EC2, RDS, S3, SES), Doctrine2 ORM on a PostgreSQL database engine, Symfony 4.4 PHP Framework, Apache2 Web Server, Braintree Payment Gateway SDK, OAuth2 authentication (Twitter, Google, Facebook), Git version control on BitBucket, Bootstrap 4 with MDB components, Composer and NPM package managers, and Google Maps integration.

I’ve worked with 5–6 teammates from TuneLAB over the years.

I found TuneLAB through Upwork after interviewing lots of companies. They impressed me because they were knowledgeable and professional. The team made good suggestions and offered a good price for the work.

I started working with TuneLAB in February 2021, and the engagement is ongoing.

They completed my complex community website. TuneLAB’s work was of a very high standard. They made good suggestions, adding value to my project.

How did TuneLAB perform from a project management standpoint?

TuneLAB worked according to my briefs and had good communication. I’m always confident that the work will be done to a high standard. The team keeps me posted and delivers on time. We communicate via Slack and email.

TuneLAB have completed many varied tasks in the years we’ve worked with them. They always have the skills needed in their team, and communicate well about what they’re doing.

🚩 Breach of Trust & Confidentiality – Disappointing Engagement with TuneLab (Kyiv, Ukraine)

We engaged TuneLab to support the ongoing development of a commercially sensitive technology platform, under what was initially a promising arrangement. The project was high-value — worth a fraction of millions — and included strict NDA and confidentiality terms, which TuneLab agreed to.

While we had some initial success, over time we began to observe troubling signs:

• Developers stopped using their cameras during Zoom calls, avoiding transparency in our meetings.
• Delivery timelines consistently slipped, with logged hours appearing artificially inflated while actual progress stalled.
• Despite multiple assurances that they no longer had access to the source code, when pressed, they produced access credentials — proving they still retained it.
• Most alarmingly, they made unsolicited and highly concerning comments around the ability to forge emails and digital signatures, and stated “we wouldn’t sell your code unless you told us to.” These statements were unprovoked and unprofessional, particularly given the nature and sensitivity of the work.

These red flags — combined with their abrupt withdrawal after we had agreed to a renewed collaboration and planned a joint public announcement — strongly suggest that TuneLab may have already been approached by competitors and possibly misused or distributed proprietary code.

We took immediate action by revoking all system access and initiating internal security reviews. The behaviour demonstrated by TuneLab falls far short of the integrity, discretion, and professionalism required for any serious commercial development partner.

Would we recommend TuneLab? Absolutely not.
They may be capable coders, but in our experience they lacked the commercial maturity, transparency, and ethical foundation to be trusted with high-value, confidential work. In our view, they knowingly breached both contract and trust.

We are publishing this review across all relevant platforms — including Clutch, Trustpilot, and Google — to ensure other companies, especially those developing proprietary IP, are aware and can make informed decisions.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

• Delivery of an incomplete beta version which required substantial rework and internal completion
• No usable MVP delivered within the agreed scope, timeline, or budget
  Loss of trust due to security concerns, suspicious behaviour, and slow to show access logs
• Intellectual property risk due to retained access after termination and comments suggesting potential code misuse
• Concerns raised over possible unauthorised distribution or sale of proprietary code, breaching confidentiality obligations

Describe their project management. Did they deliver items on time? How did they respond to your needs?

Project management was poor. The project went significantly over time and over budget. Invoices were presented in excess of the agreed amount, and time tracking on their internal system appeared either inflated or unverifiable. Despite working remotely, developers routinely refused to turn on their cameras during meetings, which severely eroded trust. Communication was inconsistent, and responsiveness to critical project needs was lacking.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Unfortunately, not much stood out in a positive way. The team failed to deliver the project within the agreed timeline or budget. More critically, the erosion of trust — including behaviour that raised serious concerns about the handling and potential misuse of our proprietary code — is, in our view, unforgivable.

Are there any areas for improvement or something TuneLAB could have done differently?

TuneLAB could improve significantly in the areas of trustworthiness, technical competence, and integrity. At a minimum, they should commit to doing what they say they will do, deliver within the agreed scope and budget, and uphold confidentiality obligations. Transparency, clear communication, and accountability must be fundamental to their future engagements.
