Please describe your company and your position there.

Midnight Illusions Ltd. is a digital media company that develops award-winning mobile applications. We've been building mobile apps since 2012, and websites since 1994. I'm the director.

For what projects/services did your company hire Tanzanite Infotech?

We needed to significantly upgrade the Android and iOS versions of an existing app, which involved server programming, database development, and API development. We also wanted to add new features and functions. 

What were your goals for this project?

We wanted to push this solution to a higher level, making it more relevant and engaging more with our users. We also wanted to simplify the code where possible.

We've been working with them for years and have always been impressed with their caliber of work, attention to detail, professionalism, and excellent communication.

Describe the project in detail.

We sent them the original code, which they reviewed before making recommendations and developing a project plan. During development, they regularly sent us updates to test on iOS and Android. They also gave feedback on the UI/UX and integrations with APIs and web services.

What was the team composition?

Our project manager was our main point of contact. He managed a larger team of iOS, Android, server, and database developers. We could communicate directly with team members to expedite development. 

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Download and retention levels significantly increased after launching this version of the software. The server is more stable, the database is more efficient, and the code is more refined. Users constantly mention how much they enjoy the expanded feature set. This project was definitely a win.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Their workflow was consistently stellar. They implemented assets as required, resolved issues quickly, and sent builds regularly. Everyone was professional and capable, and our communication was always excellent.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

Their ongoing commitment is their most impressive quality. Even when the going got rough and complications appeared, their deliveries and support remained firm. They were always around to help and I appreciated their sage advice.

Are there any areas for improvement?

The only area for improvement is for me to secure more projects for them! 

BACKGROUND

I am the Director of Midnight Illusions Ltd., a full-service digital development agency based in Guelph, Ontario. We specialize in solutions for small, medium, and large size organizations.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

I needed to create an Android version of a pre-existing iOS app for a client. The app is designed to allow the user to accumulate points using a Universal Product Code [UPC] while scanning at specific locations. The user is incentivized to earn points to then redeem for free merchandise.

We thought that it was important for our client to have both an iOS and Android version of the app available at launch because that would allow them to deploy the program to multiple universities and private locations throughout the US and Canada.

SOLUTION

Tanzanite Infotech was referred to us by a colleague, someone we consider to be a mobile app development mastermind group.They came highly recommended and the overall reference was very positive.

As far as project scope, Tanzanite Infotech provided all aspects of the Android app development including complete coding and design and server interface development. We already had the design and user experience covered.

The project duration was approximately 4 months.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Our reference was very accurate in their recommendation. Tanzanite Infotech over-delivered and accommodated what became a very difficult client situation. The end-client began to constantly change aspects of product development, which had a domino effect on coding. Tanzanite handled all changes efficiently, accurately, and professionally. We did not envy their position.

Project scope and deliverables were all achieved as well. I was most impressed with their attention to detail and ability to recall previous conversations and decisions very quickly. This made my job as a project manager much easier.

Having worked with dozens of vendors over many years, I was extremely impressed with these guys. We have since rehired them for multiple upgrades to the same end-client job.

The client is a business services firm that provides B2B [business-to-business] IT [information technology] projects. There was a need to find an offshore partner for full development cycle projects.

We had to find a partner, but wanted to vet the firm carefully. We decided to look at their client reviews and do an in-depth technical interview. We wanted to save money by creating a long-term partnership and save on developer costs.

SOLUTION

Tanzanite Infotech was selected after a careful vetting process. We have had them work on multiple engagements. The development has been for Web and mobile systems. The mobile work has been for iOS and Android apps.

The cost for the multiple engagements has been more than $50,000. I think the engagement will last for several more years.

Our goal was to create a more user-friendly social media platform for users to upload and share videos.

SOLUTION

On the Android platform, the Tanzanite team created a video social network specifying the direct category of where the video fits, selected by the user. The videos can be liked, commented on, or shared to Facebook by other users. Filters were put in place to determine whether the user preferred watching the videos of the people they're following, the people following them, or the most popular videos.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

The Tanzanite team kept in touch during the entire time we were developing this application. They provided me with alpha versions of the application to test and verify quality. All their work was provided in a timely matter. The cost was well worth the work provided. All of my questions were answered effectively and promptly. The Tanzanite team really helped take my vision and make it a reality.

I am more than thrilled with the outcome and will definitely use them again in the future. I recommend this company to anyone trying to develop a mobile app. They also did all of the server work with the databases. Their skill range is broad and doesn't lack in any area I have seen so far.

No. It’s specifically app development, but that would include iPhone, iPad, and Android.

What was your process for selecting them in the first place?

They were actually recommended to me by someone that has used them before in the U.K. as well.

Can you give a sense of the size of the project with them with either a general cost range or just the amount of work hours they contributed to the project?

I’ve worked with them for about three years now, so it’s quite a sizeable sum. It’s roughly 25 to 40 hours a week.

Is the work still ongoing or is it completed?

It’s done. I’m constantly involved in the products anyway so obviously I’ve just built up a long-term relationship with them.

Can you describe the results of their work so far?

To be honest, I wouldn’t continue using them if I wasn’t happy. During the last year, Tanzanite has really helped me push my business certainly in the U.K. I’ve got no problems with them whatsoever.

Do you happen to have any statistics or metrics that you could share about the increased success after their work?

Not really. All I know is that they have directly helped me improve my bottom line.

Is anything unique or special about Tanzanite Infotech compared to other IT firms?

To be honest, I do get a bit of a personal service. I’ve got a project manager I speak to on a daily basis. He’s very friendly. It’s not as if I’m talking to a computer.

Looking back on the work so far, is there any area that you think they could improve upon or something you might do differently?

There is nothing that I can think of to improve.
