I’m the managing director of an environmental services company. We do deforestation and afforestation in developing countries.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Syneo Tools GmbH?

We wanted to bring together a reforestation project and investors, and our team hired Syneo to create a platform for that. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Initially, we had a kickoff meeting with Syneo. We defined the MVP and two different user stories. Our team had some design ideas but didn’t have much experience in the IT or platform development space. Meanwhile, we needed not only a technically viable platform but also a sexy, modern look — Syneo has worked on the project with these things in consideration. 

The key deliverable is a web-based matchmaking platform. It’s mobile-optimized, but there’s no mobile app yet. The platform is a marketplace with two kinds of users: the project developers and the investors. It can be compared to a car dealership platform with car dealers and buyers. 

Regarding features, project developers can set up accounts and invite other company members to sign up. We verify whether or not the companies exist. After setting up their accounts, project developers can create projects; they simply have to enter relevant information, upload videos and pictures, and draw areas on a map. They can save the project’s draft or publish it on the platform. 

Similarly, investors can open accounts and upload all necessary information about them. Once they have an account, they can contact project developers via the platform and implement projects together. 

What is the team composition?

We work with three people from Syneo, including their head of IT and head of design. 

How did you come to work with Syneo Tools GmbH?

Syneo was referred to us by a friend. We had an initial meeting with them to discuss our needs, and they were keen to take on the project. They had the knowledge and experience to implement it, so we hired them. 

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent between $50,000–$100,000 on the project.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Syneo in July 2021, and the engagement is ongoing. 

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

All the features that our user stories need have been fully implemented. Syneo has been truly attentive and ensured that these features are well-executed. While we continue to find bugs on the platform, the Syneo team still supports us even though the project is technically completed. 

How did Syneo Tools GmbH perform from a project management standpoint?

Syneo’s project management is nearly perfect. However, we’ve had to change some requirements, which delayed the project. Some features not in the original plan have been integrated into the platform. In the end, we’ve only had a couple of weeks’ worth of delay, which is fine. 

In terms of communication, we’ve only been able to meet in person three times because of the COVID-19 pandemic; the rest of our meetings have been done virtually. We’ve had regular meetings every two weeks with the project manager and developer. They’ve presented a timetable and a budget to us, so we always know we’re sticking to the budget. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

The most impressive thing about Syneo is their attention to detail and absolute customer focus — they love their work. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

They could improve their time management skills. 

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Regular meetings are essential to get the most out of your engagement with Syneo. I suggest having biweekly meetings. Doing this lets you check if they’re on track and going in the right direction.
