KAT Group of Companies was first established in 1994 with the incorporation of KAT Technologies Sdn. Bhd. KAT was the pioneer company in mobile prepaid distribution business when prepaid services was first introduced in Malaysia in 1999. Since then, KAT has grown organically to cover wider territories and serving multiple principals with a multitude of products. KAT has also been accorded MSC-status and received several industry recognitions.

• Re-build the KATsys software that was an in-house application used for our distribution operations as a Software Product.
• Adapt the product to the new requirements of our clients in the Axiata Group – Ncell in Nepal and Celcom in Malaysia.
• Build Mobile Apps catering to the needs of our customers integrating with the KATSys web application.
• Scope, Design and Build integrations with the enterprise applications for both Ncell and Celcom.

The founder – Boja, has a strong track record in building products and has extensive experience in handling enterprise clients. 

Softborne proposed an extended team model for offshore development services, that is white labelled (i.e., they operate in our brand) and hence there was not issues in exposing the resources directly to our clients. 

We started the engagement with a small team of 5 people at offshore, and at peak of the implementation, we had upto 18 engineers dedicatedly working for us.

The objective was to productize the internally build KATsys software and implement for two companies (nation wide rollouts in Nepal and Malaysia) under the Asia's largest telcom provider, Axiata group. As part of the proejct, three new Android mobile apps were built supporing the unique market requrements and many integrations were built with their enterprise applications. 

The team handled the end-to-end delivery of the project from Scoping the work, supporting the RFP responses, negotiating the contract estimations to building, implementing and supporting the platform for two nationwide implementations.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

· Successfully completed the build and rollout for Ncell (Secondary Distribution Digital Transformation) supporting nationwide rollouts, handling 300k+ monthly invoices and 20+ integration points with Ncell enterprise business applications.
- Built Web App, Two Android Mobile Apps (FOS and POS)

· Also, successfully built the next version of the product supporting Celcom (adapting to the new fulfilment partner model) with 8 integration points with SAP and handling 20MIL recharge cards distribution every month.

Delivered all milestones within the agreed timelines and adapted well to complex and high standard delivery expectations of the client. 

Though the budget outrun the originally planned estimate, primarily due to the scope increase by the client, the team successfully managed the Change Request processes empowering the business teams to have strong negotiations with the customer on the additional CR budgets.

Highly engaged team with strong solution design and technical architecture knowledge of product. The team was able to handle complex integrations with ease. 

Exceptional management skills to navigate the complex enterprise client hierarchies and were very supportive in negotiations.

The commitment to perfection was evident in the high quality of service, which understandably influenced the overall cost. While the results were impressive, exploring a better balance between excellence and cost-efficiency could further enhance the offering — purely from a commercial standpoint.

Softborne Technology Solutions was contracted to manage the full-stack technical development and support of the OwlOps platform. This included mobile, web, and API components across several key responsibilities:

1. Full Ownership of Technical Development

• Maintain and enhance the Flutter-based mobile app, used by thousands of restaurant and facilities staff daily.
• Continue development of the .NET-based web portal and API, hosted on Microsoft Azure.
• Build out new features based on product roadmap priorities, including geofencing, multilingual support, and checklist automation.

2. Project Management and QA

• Provide end-to-end project management, translating requirements into actionable development tickets.
• Handle quality assurance and testing, including functional testing of all platforms prior to production release.
• Manage internal sprints, timelines, and resource allocation across API, Web, and Flutter resources.

3. Deployment and DevOps

• Manage builds and updates for: Android (Google Play Store), iOS (TestFlight and Apple App Store), Azure-hosted API and Web applications
• Coordinate release cycles, versioning, and rollback strategies when needed.
• Support database deployment processes and backup strategies.

4. Integration and Support

• Maintain and enhance integrations with: Firebase (push notifications, analytics), Twilio SendGrid (email delivery), Custom Logic Apps in Azure for automation, HubSpot, for customer engagement and data sync
• Provide ongoing technical support, bug fixes, and operational troubleshooting.

 
Key Deliverables

1. Time Sheets & Invoice Tracking
Built functionality to log technician hours and track service costs across multiple units, enabling labor visibility, invoice generation, and accurate cost allocation by location.

2. Mobile App – Version 1
Delivered the first production-ready version of the OwlOps mobile app (built in Flutter), including essential features such as: Task management, Custom checklists, Photo uploads, Signature capture, Push notifications, 

3. Deployment Management & QA Testing

Managed the end-to-end deployment process for: Android (Google Play Store), iOS (TestFlight and App Store), Web and API (Azure-hosted).

Also responsible for QA testing and validation across all platforms before each release.

Mobile App Launched to 5,000+ Active Units
Successfully launched the OwlOps mobile app (Version 1) across over 5,000 restaurant and facility units, enabling frontline staff to manage tasks, complete checklists, and log issues in real time.

Time Sheet & Invoice System Deployed Across Multi-Unit Brands
Implemented a centralized time tracking and invoice management system used by multi-unit operators to monitor technician hours and service costs across dozens of units, improving operational visibility.

QA Process With Minimal Hotfix Requirements
Formalized quality assurance and testing protocols significantly reduced critical bugs and hotfixes after deployment, improving app reliability and user satisfaction.

Improved Customer Onboarding Time
With a stable app and core feature set, new customer setup time dropped to under 30 minutes, allowing sales efforts to scale without technical delays.

Like many software projects, ours experienced some natural scope creep and pivots during implementation. Softborne adapted well to these changes, and once we aligned on a clear and well-defined specification, they showed strong project management discipline.

They did well to understand enhancement requests and kept development moving. Their QA and deployment processes were particularly impressive, with thorough testing and smooth, dependable releases across iOS, Android, and web platforms.

They were also very responsive to our evolving needs—collaborative, flexible, and committed to helping us launch a high-quality product that met the demands of our multi-unit clients.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

What impressed us most about Softborne Technology Solutions was how personable and integrated their team was throughout the engagement. Despite being located on the opposite side of the world, they truly felt like an extension of our onshore team. Communication was frequent and thoughtful, and they took real ownership of their work.

That sense of partnership—not just outsourcing—was unique and refreshing. They made a consistent effort to understand our business needs and align their technical execution accordingly, which made collaboration easy and effective.

They’re technically capable, incredibly personable, and work hard to integrate seamlessly with your internal team. With clear specs and collaborative planning upfront, they can deliver great results and become a true extension of your organization.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Softborne Technology Solutions could have done differently?

Like any long-term collaboration, there are always opportunities to enhance the relationship further. With a larger budget, we would have considered bringing in a dedicated user experience designer earlier on to elevate the overall UI/UX consistency across our web and mobile platforms.

We also recognized that more collaborative estimation sessions at the outset could have helped ensure clearer alignment on scope, timelines, and expectations for all parties. Additionally, offloading more DevOps and Azure maintenance to Softborne earlier in the engagement might have streamlined our internal workload.

That said, these are more about how we could have structured the partnership differently rather than shortcomings on Softborne’s part. Overall, they were flexible and capable, and we believe the relationship could evolve even further with these enhancements in place.

Some enhancements to UX and polish could have elevated this to a perfect score, but overall quality was very strong. Given the scope of work and the scale of our platform, it was a worthwhile investment. Some roles like UX/UI or deeper DevOps would have added value if the budget allowed. Initial scoping and shifting priorities caused a few early delays, but the team adapted well and maintained a solid delivery cadence.  With a few refinements around upfront planning and resource structure, it could have been a 5-star experience.
