The goal was to build a proper pre-release regression flow. So we needed somebody to develop a framework to automate regression testing. Also we needed creating the testing documentation.

We faced a challenge - cause of rapidly grooving of our Advertising product users caught bugs. So we felt the lack of the robust QA process inside our development flow. After discussion with UTOR team we agreed the plan which included: 1. Creating regression test plan (Checklist); 2. Finding as many bugs as possible manually; 3. Developing Automation E2E Framework from scratch to automate regression testing (Stack: NodeJS, Webdriver.io, WebStorm, Postman).

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Everything we agreed with the UTOR team at the start was made in life by their high-skilled QA Engineers. 1. The regression test plan was created by QA Analyst. So we have initial QA documentation on our product. Good beginning the way to proper QA process. 2. Bug Report was made by QA Analyst and bugs were fixed by our dev team. It allowed our users to avoid catching bugs and made them happier. 3. Automation E2E Framework was developed. We have the scalable Automation solution for exactly what we need. So our releases will be faster and we can scale the solution when the product grows.

Good communication skills, high-level hard skills and extra free hours from UTOR made the workflow great.

We needed to find a reliable partner where we could scale up and down depending on project volume and crunch periods. We also wanted someone we could properly integrate with, and ensure we're embedded in our own working practices. We also insisted on knowledge share back to our core team.

We have several different ways of selecting this resource, from full time inhouse, freelanceer and then working with a partner company. We benchmarked the different approaches and identified that UTOR provided the best value, both in terms of cost, as well a reliability.

Each project we have worked on with UTOR has been different, but we always review their candidates upfront, for suitability. If there are any issues or problems with compatibility, UTOR find a new candidate quickly, and anyway all the work is overseen by the UTOR CTO.

Once onboarded, the UTOR QA works as part of the team, and is fully integrated into our processes, with oversight and recommendations provided by the UTOR CTO.

We have 3 or 4 UTOR QAs at any point in time, covering both manual QA and automated QA, depending on the needs of the projects we have ongoing.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The key outcome is that we continue using UTOR for our specialist needs and for overflow QA work! As described above, we have used UTOR on several projects now, and we have 3 or 4 QA engineers from them at any particular point in time.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Remote working, by its definition, requires over-communication and a proactive approach. UTOR always communicated well, and often were the ones feeding back to us if the workflow wasn't working well enough, either into the project team, escalating to me or via their CTO in our review meetings. Working with UTOR helped us pinpoint problems with our own workflow.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

On top of having high-quality QA skills, UTOR is willing to work in a proper partnership. This has involved lots of transparency, knowledge share back and forth, and acknowledgement when things haven't gone wrong, as they inevitably do!

Are there any areas for improvement?

Not too much really, I think the only thing is that they were a bit polite to start off with in terms of raising issues with my own team, whereas I welcome the feedback and we could have gotten to the deep partnership sooner.

We started by mapping out the user stories / test scenarios we wanted to cover, which was done by UTOR's engineer proactively using the software. After we had a good set of test scenarios covered, we started implementing them with a few different technologies, eventually settling for a custom Cypress.io setup.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

The entire functionality of the application is covered with tests. The automation framework setup works well and regularly updates. Test suites and categories have been created for the convenience and ease of performing manual checks.

Over the past month QA Engineers found around 50 harmful issues which have since been fixed by developers Also UTOR QA engineers have provided suggestions about improving the user interface, including how the user is notified about events.

We appreciate the efforts of the UTOR team very much. Their QA engineers allow us to be confident in the quality of our application.

What did you find most impressive about this company?

The ability to provide us QA personnel in an on-demand basis, plus a proactive role in suggesting how to holistically improve the test coverage from all aspects.

Are there any areas for improvement?

Nothing significant, perhaps at times it was a bit unclear what was going to be worked on next and what the hour allocation for that would be, but that was also due to us not being able to devote enough time to establish e.g. a clear weekly/daily comms schedule.

At the end of testing, they provided a very detailed test report which helped our in-house engineers to improve our product. Moreover, they provided a consulting session with our in-house engineers where they shared their thoughts about improvements in our internal QA processes.

They tested two automation frameworks written in Python. They used Pytest, Appium, and Selenium to test mobile automation and unittest, REST client, and Bash to test our GSM modems. They also tested against a remote Unix node through a Paramiko SSH module and executed on a time basis using Jenkins with remote workers.

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

UTOR's primary deliverables were testing reports that came in the form of color-coded Google Spreadsheets. Each item is labeled with a headline, sorted by status, priority and issue type with a full set of validators to account for different variables. Every issue also lays out the expected and actual result, states the steps to reproduce the error, and links to a corresponding screenshot. On the second tab, there are parallel lists of questions with answers from UTOR. 

At the end of our latest engagement, UTOR produced a detailed report on all the issues and improvements. In one example for an Android and iOS mobile app, they identified and fixed or closed 43 issues ranging in level of severity and priority. Three of these were areas for improvement, four items were critical, three were minor, and the rest were flagged as major issues. By category, they solved 31 functional concerns, two GUI flaws, and eight problems that had been impacting usability. 

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

UTOR’s management performs at a high level. I understood the flow of our cooperation during each step of the project. Based solely on the applications we provided for testing, they returned with a detailed estimation before the project even started. 

What did you find most impressive about this company?

They provided us with not only QA testing, but also suggestions on how to improve our product. It was very important to us that they offered this advice. UTOR was extremely involved in our project and put in more effort than anyone could have expected.
