We wanted to allow workers to add the data into a software tool where we can ensure all data is correct and formatted for reporting. We also wanted a dashboard display of all the data so that we can monitor all the data in real-time.

After poor results from a previous design agency, NL Softworks was brought in to allow more design flexibility and CRM integration into our Shopify Website. This primarily meant removing reliance on Shopify Apps, as they were limited in functionality and creative choices.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

NL Softworks had worked previously with us on an older WordPress website with great success. Our attempts to bring in a separate design agency had left us limited in design and functionality. We needed a more custom approach that met our admittedly lofty design goals without the annoyance of "Shopify App Limitations".

Overall, we wanted to use a more custom approach that fully utilized integration with our CRM and the freedom to design aspects of the website in the most on-brand and user-friendly way possible. In our case, that meant removing reliance on Shopify Apps through custom, well-thought-out implementations. That's where NL Softworks came in. They seamlessly became part of our JIRA process. User Stories were explored, Designs were made/revised/approved, then handed off to NL Softworks to bring to life within a safe QA Shopify environment. We then tested the design/functionality here before approving it once more to the Live Production version of the website.

Ed lead the discussions and meetings as Tech Lead. Most of the implementations were done by him as well. Though I did some Design QA with a separate front-end Dev from NL Softworks, Tony.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

Thanks to NL Softworks, we were able to launch the website in a much better state both in terms of design and functionality, and their implementations allowed for an iterative website that could be slowly improved over time. We took in feedback from our clients and Sales Team and were able to integrate functionality that simplified their processes, and resulted in reduced friction between client, salesperson, and website order interactions.

Projects/Tasks were handled through Jira and setup as weekly Sprints. These Jira tasks would usually have many design/functionality notes, and were expected to be implemented properly at every device size and provide the correct user flow based on login-status. During these Sprints, we mostly discussed little clarifications through Slack messaging, and setup Huddles/Meetings for anything scope changing. We also a weekly meeting setup to review Sprint progress and clarify things for the upcoming Sprint. Sprints were rarely extended, and before they were NL Softworks was clear and transparent on what custom functionality is needed and why it would expand the timeline.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Everything we handed them, no matter how complex, was implemented as expected both in design and functionality. They competently completed all the tasks given to them, and when there are roadblocks, they provide alternatives in great detail that can used to meet the original goal.

Front-End implementations would often take a few iterations to reach the expected result, but when Tony was brought on, these tasks went through smoothly and were QA'd quickly.

The most impressive aspect about working with NL Softworks was their ability to come up with effective solutions for all of the issues we threw at them. I was very impressed with their development abilities and problem solving strategies.

For what projects/services did your company hire NL Softworks, and what were your goals?

We were in the middle of transitioning our website from WordPress to Shopify. A 3rd party agency was tasked with building the Shopify website, so NL Softworks started helping us maintaining the WordPress site until launch. But when we received the first Shopify version from the other agency, the quality was very low using a lot of apps where we wanted custom designs and experiences. We were not sure we would be able to confidently launch by our launch date.

Having been working with Ed on the WordPress site, we knew that whatever we threw his way he would tackle and propose solutions that would last. And if there was a roadblock, we would talk about it and brainstorm ideas rather than taking routes that were low quality.

After receiving that first version of the website, we divided the work and met with Ed to identify the biggest items to troubleshoot and scope. Then we integrated them to our JIRA project providing user stories organized in sprints to organize the work.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We were able to achieve our launch date, with the quality we needed on key aspects of the website they were able to work on such as our Homepage, Signup Form and Request a Quote capabilities among others.

We met about 3 times a week for a standup, and Ed was always ready to jump on a call or a problem whenever the need appeared. We were able to talk extensively on problems and solutions, and he provided good insight on future tasks with timely quotes. We used JIRA and slack to communicate.

"Cannot be done" is not in their vocabulary. Whatever the problem, they will tackle and research to solve it in the best way possible communicating efficiently all the way. They are trustworthy and a great asset to any team who wants to build great things that last.

Initially the amount of work was too much for one person and we were running a bit behind, but they were quick to source an additional dev and we were able to get back on track.

We have already had many clients and associates compliment us on our new website. The project inquiry feature that was added to the website has already helped bring new business in.

Working with NL was extremely easy and efficient throughout the project. We communicated over email, teams, zoom, phone calls and texts. Ed at NL was always available no matter the time to hear my feedback and answer questions. I could not have asked for better customer service

I think the affordable price for the high quality of work provided was the best part of working with NL as well as how easy it was to communicate with them. They always listened to our input and we’re able to make our goals a reality. We are very pleased with our finished website and the continuing service we receive from them with constantly updating and tweaking the website as well.

Sending clients a production schedule at the start of an assignment would be an improvement. I see this issue with virtually all development resources I work with.
