BACKGROUND

Please describe your company and your position there.

I am professor of Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Faculty of Medicine, Division of Radiation Biology and Medicine. My duty is engaging education for medical student and doing research for evaluate radiation resistance of cancer cells. At the previous position at Tottori University, Faculty of Medicine, I am engaged in vice chair of industrial cooperation department in medical department.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

For what projects/services did your company hire eBase U.S., and what were your goals?

For my basic medical research to evaluate cancer cell division and DNA repair effects of radiation treatment, it is necessary to evaluate image processing of hundred-thousands cells from several hundreds of microscopy time-lapse imaging. eBase U.S. create image processing software to do segmentation of cells, to track moving cells, and to evaluate surface characterization of individual cells. This software helps me so much to analyze cancer cell division and DNA repair mechanism in damaged radiated and drug treated cells.

SOLUTION

How did you select this vendor and what were the deciding factors?

Before doing our project of basic scientific research, we requested web design of University Home Pages using eBase designed special homepage builder. Also eBase created several customer service software for University Hospital , such as out patient waiting list and waiting time inform system via mobile phone, automated medical data transfer system, and so on. I noticed their high quality of software development technique to process digital imaging data, then I asked to help image processing software development.

Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.

eBase U.S. works with various programing languages to develop web applications. They specialize in rapid development using the PHP framework Laravel. They have also recently started using a combination of React and Laravel. Besides PHP, they also use Perl and Ruby. They design and create not only web apps, but also apps for Android, iOS, Windows, etc. On the other hand, they seemless inclined to work on embedded systems. Since their engineering team is small, they may not deal with large-scale projects. On the other hand, they can well handle small scale data processing software. Their rates are inexpensive, despite being a very reliable partner. Not only above mentioned, one of the system engineer is very capable of scientific programming. they can help my research so well.

How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?

For my research project, two or three well skilled system engineer help my project. For web design, I don't know in detail.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

My research design of image processing is patented. And some scientific paper is published.

I have no idea for project management style. there is no special communication tools.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

Even though they do not have many staffs, individual engineers have good and various skills that makes easy to develop characteristic and unique software.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

They have much experience in the medical and out patient clinic field to improve customer service.
