SM Technology Group provides support, maintenance, and consulting on all IT related matters for a local bank.

Initially working as employees of the bank itself before creating their own company, SM Technology continues to provide on-site support. Specifically, they assist in overnight maintenance for bank apps and provide consulting on new products and initiatives.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

I work in the IT department at a community bank in upstate New York.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with SM Technology Group?

We were looking for three things. First, support for our in-house developed applications and customized consumer solutions. Second, maintenance for updates needing to be made as a result of regulatory changes. And third, consulting on IT related issues or initiatives we are undertaking.

SOLUTION

What is the scope of their involvement?

They support a lot of our critical applications such as our internet banking app and customized solutions for specific customers. They also help with maintenance on any new developments we need to make and work on a number of automation tools that we use internally. On top of all that, they also assist us in general IT consulting.

How did you come to work with SM Technology Group?

Initially they were employees here at the bank and part of our technology group. Over time, they collectively decided they wanted to spin off into their own company and continue supporting us while also taking on new customers. We supported them in that initiative and their work with us carried over when they left.

What is the status of this engagement?

They became their own entity in March 2018 and we continue to work with them.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We rely on them for after hour support, and they are very responsive in that area. A number of our applications run in the evenings into the early morning, so when there's a need for support they will come in well after normal business hours, which has really helped us.

How did SM Technology Group perform from a project management standpoint?

They are very responsive, especially because they are local. We communicate by phone and email, but they also spend time on-site each week with us.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I would say their two biggest strengths are their experience with bank technology and general software development. They’ve definitely got the right people and the right skill sets.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There is nothing for them to change from our perspective.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

As with anything, you need to be clear upfront about your goals and objectives.
