I’m the CEO of Kumulos. We provide an analytics, messaging, and performance management platform for mobile apps.

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

A client in financial services approached us to add functionality to an existing app. They wanted to add features such as messaging, geolocation, and analytics. We engaged Waracle as our implementation partner to build these features and integrate our platform. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Waracle had built the original version of our client’s app for iOS devices using Swift. For this project, their team helped us integrate our platform and software development kit (SDK) into the app. They created custom analytics through our platform that record user interactions. They also built enhancements such as location sharing, push notifications, and AR. Waracle created mockups and clickable prototypes for us to test before starting development. 

What is the team composition?

We worked with a project manager, two iOS developers, an AR developer, a QA specialist, and a part-time UI/UX person. Waracle also provided an expert in financial services regulations.

How did you come to work with Waracle?

We chose Waracle as our development partner because we knew them well. Their location was convenient, and they had experience working in the financial sector, which put our mind at ease. Waracle also had excellent agile processes that we felt would help our client prioritize their long list of desired features against their budget and deadlines.

How much have you invested with them?

We spent about £50,000 (approximately $63,500).

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked together from October 2018–May 2019.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Since Waracle was our implementation partner, we were responsible for their success. We measured their progress through a variety of metrics. Ultimately, our client was happy with their work, and so were we.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

Thanks to their agile processes, Waracle gave our client and us as much control as possible over the project. We had all the information we needed about how long tasks would take and how much they would cost. Waracle completed work in biweekly sprints. We could track their progress and reprioritize requests as needed, especially when Waracle was providing early-stage screens and prototypes. Their transparency allowed us to have open discussions whenever our client had a scope change or a new feature request.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Waracle brought top-notch agile methodology and in-depth industry experience to the table in this project. They were able to answer nearly any question we had about the project or the regulatory aspects outside the software.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I can’t think of anything. It was a successful project from our end. I'm sure there are things in their business they'd like to work on, but I'm not sure I can answer that question. 

Any advice for potential customers?

First of all, take advantage of Waracle’s experience in mobile and AR development as well as with regulation. Listen to their guidance. Second, clients will get out what they put into a project with Waracle. Meet up with their team often and make yourself available to them to get a better outcome at the project’s end.

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

I hired Waracle to create a product in a new space that would improve prescribing safety.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Waracle built a web product and a corresponding hybrid mobile application for Android and iOS. I provided them with a prototype, and then they create a new version more suitable for my requirements. Their team also worked on the UX and design as well.

What is the team composition?

I think our team had around 10 to 15 people. There was a project manager, a set of developers, and people who worked on the UX/UI. There was also a bit of regulatory compliance.

I met their CEO about four years ago.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with Waracle from February–December 2018.

I appreciate their breadth of resource and experience. I was also impressed with their technical proficiency and project management ability.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No, I don’t think so. Nothing springs to mind.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Have a clear idea of what you want and where you want to go. Make sure everything is tracked by milestones appropriately. But I think most of the work to do Waracle themselves completed that.

I’m the head of IT for one of the largest branded soft drink manufacturers in the UK.

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle? 

We tasked Waracle with developing a mobile app that would help us build greater engagement with our customers. Currently, our clientele includes about 15,000 small independent retailers and convenience store retailers across the UK.
 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Initially, they provided some market research and consulted us on the app’s design before beginning development. It’s a cross-platform Android/iOS app that serves as a platform to host content about our soft drink brands for our retailers. This includes soft drink category information, news information, and suggested planograms. The app also allows retailers to buy promotional deals and features a loyalty reward scheme.

What is the team composition? 

Over the course of the project, we’ve worked with about 5–6 individuals, including project managers, designers, and developers. 

How did you come to work with Waracle? 

My colleague had previously worked with Waracle and recommended them. We did a small pilot project to test their skills, and they performed well, so we went from there.

What is the status of this engagement? 

Their work started in August 2017 and is ongoing. We’re now looking to develop subsequent phases of the app.

They’ve delivered the app on time and are now working with us to plan subsequent developments.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

Overall, they did really well. While they could have managed their day-to-day timelines better and scheduled more meetings, in the end, they delivered on time. When things got tough, they definitely stepped up. 

What did you find most impressive about them? 

They’re business-focused and are good listeners. Rather than just looking at the technical requirements, they took the time to understand our business and goals.

Are there any areas they could improve? 

They’re great at handling projects, but the post-implementation services could have been more structured in terms of update meetings and such.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?
 
Get them involved as soon as possible and invest time to help them understand your business. When given the time, they’re very capable.

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

We needed a vendor to help us do research on an iOS application that we wanted to build.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We're working on a research and innovation project where we use sensors to collect ground-truth satellite data. Satellites are recording soil moisture and we use the actual sensors in the ground that are also recording soil moisture, so we can compare the two. We asked Waracle to take the sensors and determine how much it'll cost to create an app. They did the investigation by way of interfacing with the sensors over Bluetooth and extracting data. We didn't go past that phase–mostly because of our constraints, not their constraints. We might go back to them at a later date to build the app.

We worked with them between September–October 2018.

They worked very quickly. Because we're a university, we had students from various levels doing a similar project. Students were taking months, while Warnaco took less than a week.

We had some very effective meetings with them and they quickly understood all of our requirements and challenges.

We’re currently in negotiations for a potential second project to build the minimal viable product (MVP).

They’re good at project management. We mainly use Slack and WebEx to communicate.

Their designers are excellent and hard workers. They’re incredibly experienced when it comes to app development.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I would’ve liked to start the video a bit sooner. Other than that, the partnership has been great. They’re patient with me and do a good job. I don’t have anything negative to say about them.

The Midcounties Co-operative is a consumer co-operative society where we have a membership of customers and employees. We have different businesses that we operate including food, funeral, childcare, energy, healthcare, and travel. We are a billion-dollar business with six main businesses. We have a membership of 650,000 members.

I work with the membership team as the member benefits manager.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

We have our own strategy committee. They have their own objectives which we have to work towards. One objective was to enable technology to engage our members. We also have a diverse age range in our membership. We’re very good at communicating with the more established members, but we don’t have anything that appeals to younger members. Our idea is to try to overcome those challenges.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They developed a mobile app for us for iOS, Android, and Windows, not including Windows 10. Our existing website is used to feed information into the app. The app has a virtual membership card which can be brought up as the individual card number with a bar code. This can be used as a point of transaction in one of our sites to collect membership points. Rather than having to carry around a plastic card, our members can use their smartphones as an alternative.

The app also contains discounted promotions for our food stores that members have access to at the touch of a button. This is all continuously updated from the website. Members can access these promotions on the website, but it’s more convenient to access it on the app. With the app, members can also view their personal details and update them as needed without having to call the membership office. There is also a store finder feature and a section for member events which can be filtered by one’s geographical location. The app also has a contact us feature which sends communication notifications to the membership team.

Waracle helped with the design of the app also. They were careful to keep it in line with our brand. They provided a number of different options, and we decided from those. They worked within our guidelines and our input.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with them in January 2017. We went to pilot in April 2017 where we piloted a handful of stores in a small geographical location for three months. Then, we did a complete rollout across all of our sites in June 2017. They are currently providing reporting and maintenance services. They are working through the second phase of the proposal as well.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We look at the number of downloads, repeated visits, and star ratings. Our goal is a percentage, of which we’ve set between three and five stars. We have clear objectives that we track every month and they send a report for that. We currently have just over 5000 downloads. We didn’t really know how popular it would be at the start. We’re now trying to push for 10,000 downloads, but 5000 was our goal for the beginning. We have 51% of users that are repeat users and 80% of users have rated the app between three and five stars. We are hitting the targets we wanted to at the start.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

We used an Agile approach, and the communication was regular with regular updates. We never felt like we were falling behind in the project. They hit most of the deadlines. It was a good experience.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They had experience with co-ops before, and it was important to us that they understand our needs and values. We wanted slightly different things, but we knew they were able to deliver previously and we tapped into that knowledge.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t think so. They’ve been very patient and honest with us. We could be better at paying them on time. They haven’t chased us when payments have been overdue. They’ve been very reasonable as a supplier.

I am the director of a recruitment agency focused on life science and IT personnel.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

We were looking to improve our digital marketing strategy, which included putting together an SEO plan and optimizing our website, making it more efficient around mobile platforms.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Waracle gave us strategic advice around SEO, and provided a number of items which we needed to consider. They then worked on those items, in order to improve our Google ranking. Waracle some modifications on our website, targeting certain search terms. We have a consultant marketing director who worked alongside Waracle on our SEO strategy.

They also worked on making our site more responsive and visually better than it was before. We use a CRM called Firefish, which had some issues on the mobile side. Waracle tweaked it, making it more responsive.

How did you come to work with Waracle?

We’ve had a longstanding relationship with them. I’ve helped source staff for Waracle, which, in turn, helped us with our challenge.

How much have you invested with Waracle?

The cost of their work has been between £3,000 and £4,000. [$3,800 to $6,300]

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Waracle around nine months ago. We’ve made some internal changes to the business, and much of the digital marketing has been put on hold. We’re looking to bring a junior inhouse digital marketer onboard, who will work with Waracle on an ad-hoc basis. Waracle has given us an idea as to what else their team could do, and I believe that we will utilize more of their services after bringing in an inhouse person.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

Our ranking for eight or nine of our targeted terms has pushed up, particularly the life-sciences-related ones. Searches like “scientific recruitment”, “life-science recruitment” or “IT recruitment”, as well as related terms like CRO and CRA were the ones we focused on, and we’ve definitely seen an improvement, although I don’t have stats at hand.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

The limitation sits with us, rather than Waracle. We were probably not geared up to take advantage of their skill sets, but this will hopefully change. Waracle had excellent communication overall.

What did you find most impressive about Waracle?

They have made an effort to understand our business and what they can do to help, rather than trying to give us solutions which don’t fit our business. Waracle is definitely knowledgeable in terms of mobile, and not just a generic website builder. On the optimization piece, they knew what they were talking about and have helped move us up the rankings. We haven’t been in the best position to take advantage of those recommendations, but this will all change moving forward, and we will become even more successful.

Are there any areas Waracle could improve?

I don’t think so. It would have been better for us to be more geared up, but there’s nothing for Waracle to improve.

I work for a spirits company. We produce rum and whiskey for a global market. I work for the Brugal rum brand.

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

We had various websites in our big markets. Although we had a global website, each of the markets had very different messaging. We were trying to simplify what we were doing by making the websites brand-centric rather than campaign-centric. Our goal was to have 1 global website which was suitable for all markets.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We actually did the design with another agency but we brought Waracle on board because they had worked with other brands within the company. We’d been advised that Waracle was very good in terms of hosting, security, and development. We worked with them and another agency. Waracle was responsible for all of the architecture and the technical development on WordPress. They also helped us with site optimization and analytics.

How did you come to work with Waracle?

I wasn’t involved, but my understanding is they were already working for other agents and brands like Highland Park whiskey. The IT team rated them in terms of their technical expertise and support, so they were one of IT’s chosen partners. I believe they were recommended to the brand team on that basis. They’re also local to our office as well, which has helped.

How much have you invested with Waracle?

Over a 5-month period, we paid £2,500 a week for Waracle’s services.

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in May 2016 and was completed by October 2016.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

We launched phase 1 in May. Based on the analytics from Waracle, we’ve got an increased number of users and they are spending more time on the page. Also, our bounce rate has gone down. Phase 2 just launched at the end of September, so it’s still early days. But versus previous years, we are going in the right direction.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

We managed it with the 2 agencies. We had a weekly call and Waracle was always there on time. They are very efficient and proactive in finding solutions. Also, they were willing to work with the design agency. We were worried that we might have problems with 2 agencies working together, but they’ve all been very open and very good in terms of teamwork.

What did you find most impressive about Waracle?

Waracle was very straightforward and they can always back up what they say. They give you a technical explanation and then they’re very good at translating that and giving you examples. Because I’m not from a technical background, I appreciate that they would spend time to make sure that you understood why they were recommending something or suggesting you try a different route.

Are there any areas Waracle could improve?

They could be more efficient in the way they invoice and provide more detail as back up.

BACKGROUND

Introduce your business and what you do there.

Our company is Pinpoint Ltd. We manufacture, design, and install staff attack alarms, mostly for psychiatric and challenging behavior and medical environments. If a member of staff requires, perhaps, a little bit of reassurance from another staff member, and a patient is acting aggressively towards them, they can use one of our call devices to signal either audibly or silently to the nearby staff that they require assistance.

We actually have several levels of call in the system that lets you tell what level of assistance you require. We have assistance emergency for different levels of unfolding situations. They also can progress, so if a situation progresses, so can the level of call. The system then informs everyone nearby what level of call it is and where the event is unfolding.  We have grown over, I think, 20 years, to include nurse call systems as well and various other plug-ins and ways of activating the system.

Mainly, we supply what we call PITs, personal infrared transmitters. There would be a unit in the ceiling that looks for these infrared transmissions that are individual units sent out in the event of something happening. It's then transferred to a range of either tricolor, over-door lights, LED lights, static display panels, sounders, and more recently we've started moving into more software-focused fields.

I am the Senior Design Engineer. I'm responsible for coming up with concepts for new products going forward. In this case, we've employed a third party in Waracle, and I managed their handling of the project and worked as a liaison between both companies. We also design and build a product here, in which case I take those designs from concept to completion and do prototyping. I do a little bit of marketing. I handle manufacturing processes as well and quality control and troubleshooting with the devices.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

We're able to transfer information onto a wired domestic network, in which case we can transfer this information to the desktops and now to mobile phones, which is why we employed Waracle.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

When a call is initiated, it can be sent to any number of mediums. Before we started working with Waracle, I suppose the biggest comparison you can make to what we've achieved now would be a pager. It would send this information to a pager over our air frequency. However, radio technology is becoming much more widely used now, so the radio frequencies tend to be a little bit busier, which has caused us some issues. Actually finding reliable paging systems, from experience, is hard. The technology as a whole is a little bit outdated now so we were seeking to create a mobile app, basically not only to underpin this functionality of being able to send this information to a mobile device but also add the functionality. We wanted to customize the end user experience and we figured that not every member of staff would want to receive every single call. Some calls may be more important to other members of staff and less important to others. With that in mind, we employed Waracle to help us figure out how to create this kind of tiered effect with our users and how to transmit this information to mobile devices.

The application is for Android at the moment.

How did you come to work with Waracle?

We had looked into a couple of companies that were local because we do try and keep as much of our outsourced working as local as we can possibly can. We had a look at their previous work history. We noticed they had worked with the National Health Service already, so that was a major plus point for us because the National Health Service can sometimes be a bit particular in the way that they work. Also, they had done IoT [Internet of Things] work before. Their credentials, in terms of what we were trying to achieve, looked like they fit.

How much have you invested with Waracle?

We have spent between $50,000 and $80,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

At this point in time, the project has been running for 14 months from the initial concept. I can't say with absolute certainty when we started talking to Waracle. It was in 2015.

Could you share any evidence that would demonstrate the productivity, quality of work, or the impact of the engagement?

So far, we haven't actually released it yet. We're still at the pre-release stage. In terms of customer interest, it's been really, really high. One of the main reasons why we've actually done this is that we wanted to put ourselves forward as a progressive company. I think that in creating the app, we have floated the idea to our customers from a sales perspective and the customers have reacted to demos really, really well. There's been a lot of interest generated in terms of customers themselves and companies.

For example, the company whose phones we're going to use to retail - we're actually going to retail the devices with the app preloaded on them - actually said that the work we're doing is quite interesting, and we've ended up forming a bit of a relationship with them as well. It's been a two-way PR relationship there. That's all been really interesting.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

We've achieved what we wanted to achieve with Waracle. I think that's probably quite important to say. We have, on the way, had some minor disagreements about parts of functionality that have been missed on the initial scoping of the project. We didn't employ Waracle as simple engineers; they were employed as designers as well. It was up to them to assess the needs that we had and then draw up a specification from that, and almost tell us what we needed.

We feel that, perhaps, on a couple of occasions, the mark was missed a little bit. When it was mentioned, it then became a bit of a to and fro effect. We had to prove almost that it wasn't a failing on our part and it was covered by the initial scope of the project, and that it really should be completed under the original terms.

What did you find most impressive about Waracle?

At the end of the day, even given these slight disagreements that we've had, Waracle has had an incredible ability to level with us. At the end of the day, the account managers and the Chief Executive Officer, Pete Gordon, have been really keen to make sure we're happy with the end result.

I think in terms of myself, I've been able to pop into the office at any point and have a chat with them and go over any concerns that I had with them. Really, we're not app company and we're not a phone company; it's been new territory for us, so they've been quite willing to guide us through the entire process, which has been quite good.

Are there any areas Waracle could improve?

I think the issue was that we thought that Waracle could do with understanding other businesses business practices. We have quite a bespoke business and bespoke customer base here, and I think a lot of the ways they would work, possibly straight off the bat, didn't exactly fit in with our requirements. There needs to be a bit of flexibility there.

For this engagement, we wanted to put a new spin on and add value to our existing technology. As the senior design engineer, I’m responsible for a portion of existing and new products.

What challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

Our app initially arose from our consistent commitment to innovation. Since we first hired Waracle to build an Android app, we most recently engaged them to augment our existing app with an iOS version.  
 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement? 

Our company recently rebranded. Initially, we built the Android app as a proof of concept. Waracle applied our new brand guidelines to an app for iOS. This version enabled us to roll out a much nicer aesthetic that highlights our new branding application. 

The team’s skilled UX designers reconfigured the backend to include statistics and a new notification system. They have also been quite involved in the frontend design, verification, and feedback. 

Waracle supported us from start to finish. They also ran testing, which is utterly vital in our industry.

The team working on this project included 10 or fewer people. Waracle assigned us a UX designer, a project manager, two iOS developers, and a testing specialist.

We’ve established an excellent working relationship and are in nearly constant contact about our ongoing projects.

After reengaging Waracle, we worked together on the iOS app from May–December 2018.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The timescale in which Waracle delivered the iOS app was fantastic. It took an entirely reasonable amount of time. The quality of their work has been great. The aesthetics of the new version are a fantastic improvement over the previous iteration.

Everyone from our company was blown away. Our marketing manager was especially happy with the user interaction side of their deliverable.

How did Waracle perform from a project management standpoint?

Waracle excelled at project management. We have absolutely no complaints. They went through very in-depth testing, which is an essential factor for us. 

This process ensured the app conformed to our expectations and aligned with the previous version’s standards as well. Waracle was quite accommodating about meeting our requirements. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

I appreciate that I can always drop by their office to see the team in person. They’ve integrated our feedback from last time. We have much to look forward to. They are quite open with us.

No, not at this time. Overall, we are really pleased with their work.

Planning is essential. Thinking through the scope and all the details from the beginning will help you avoid complications further down the line. If you give Waracle a clear plan, they will achieve your goals.

We manage and maintain seven golf courses as well as other facilities in St. Andrews, including three club houses, five shops, and a golf academy.

What is your position?

I am part of the marketing team. We deal with our digital offerings, including the company website, blog, social media, customer journey, and also traditional media like advertising within publications.

What business challenge were you trying to address with Waracle?

We wanted to have a fuller picture of our position in the digital realm and increase our understanding of the people using our website. We've always had access to Google Analytics, which gave us a good top-line view, but we wanted to delve a bit deeper.

SOLUTION

Please describe the scope of their involvement in greater detail.

Waracle helped us in a few different areas. They helped with our digital display advertising by running a few campaigns in collaboration with us. Some of those were Google display ads, while others were Facebook advertising. They provided creative artwork for many of our display ads and gave us weekly updates on their work.

They've also worked on site tracking, delving into items like traffic acquisition and giving us a better understanding of where users are coming from. We've worked on improving our user experience on the website and have had a UX review. Waracle implemented various forms of tracking on the site whereby user actions are tracked in ways which we couldn't achieve before. We log how far users scroll down pages and what they click on in our menus. We're now able to determine which our most popular menu items are, and what search terms are most popular in our internal search engine.

Waracle has also worked extensively on our SEO at the beginning of our relationship, which has helped greatly with the visibility of our site. They optimized things like keywords, meta tags, and meta descriptions.

We are based in St. Andrews and Waracle is based in Dundee, which is only 20-30 minutes away from us. We were aware of them and their work. They had a good reputation. We spoke with a few other companies, but decided that Waracle was the one to go for.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together at the end of 2014. The relationship is ongoing. We work with Waracle on a monthly retainer, engaging in different projects and optimizations regularly.

Could you share any feedback from this engagement?

We assessed our Facebook advertising campaign, looking at targeting in particular. We wanted to be careful and not spam users who weren't interested. We used the marketing list put together by Waracle based on users who had visited our website and were thus already engaged with the brand. The advertisement was run for the 2015 Open Championship which is held in St. Andrews. Our Facebook followers grew significantly as a result of it.

The brand that we represent is very well-known throughout the world, so our SEO listings were always healthy, even before our work with Waracle. They've helped us refine this and make sure that we are doing the right things.

What distinguishes Waracle from other providers?

We have a good relationship with them. They have a personal touch, and we maintain a close working relationship. I haven't worked with a lot of similar organizations, but I'm satisfied with Waracle.
