I’m the CTO of Funanga AG, a financial services company. We provide CashtoCode, a payment service that enables online merchants to accept cash payments through barcodes redeemable at over 550,000 retail locations, making e-commerce accessible to customers who prefer or require cash transactions.

What specific goals or objectives did you hire Techtinium to accomplish for Funanga and your CashtoCode payment service?

We needed help documenting our existing AWS infrastructure in Terraform code (IaC) to cover provisioning, recovery, and production modifications.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Techtinium implemented Terraform scripts to provision AWS services, including EC2, RDS, S3, CloudWatch, CloudFront, IAM, and Lambda. The team also used state management to keep the infrastructure manageable from multiple systems. Moreover, Techtinium performed maintenance and operations tasks every quarter to keep the systems healthy and up to date. The team also provided documentation.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Techtinium has achieved all our goals. Our infrastructure is documented in Terraform code, and the scripts are tried and tested in production. Moreover, we now have more transparency on the current infrastructure setup for everyone. Suggesting changes is now open to all developers (with repository access).

How did Techtinium perform from a project management standpoint?

Techtinium mostly delivers on time. We communicate via virtual meetings, emails, and Slack.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Techtinium is willing and able to get the job done. After the initial introduction and discussion of a new implementation topic, the team takes the tasks responsibly and delivers a workable solution on time.

1. Set up four new Linux cloud servers to run data pipelines and new storage buckets in Google Cloud to migrate resources from AWS. 
   1. Install core libraries and code packages, test the pipelines, and optimize server environments for reliability and speed.
2. Stabilize, modernize, and modularize code for six related Python-based data processing pipelines to increase robustness and simplify future feature additions. 
   1. Periodic debugging and enhancements to the code.
   2. Improve logging of processes and events for troubleshooting and record-keeping.
3. Implement User Accounts for thousands of citizen scientist users: 
   1. Design a website feature for users to log in, register user information, and view their data in a series of profile webpages.
   2. Build a backend to automatically send output products from data pipelines to cloud storage and SQL databases for access by the web frontend.
   3. Write API's to seamlessly connect the backend and frontend features with low latency.
4. Design and implement webpages describing pre-defined astronomical events that are generated on demand by user visits to given urls. 
   1. Build an API to map information from json files to a MongoDB database and then from the database to the webpages for six different cases.
   2. Implement logic to handle missing or incomplete data.
   3. Make it scalable to handle tens of thousands of events.

All work involves developing and testing in a development environment before releasing in a production environment.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Measurable outcomes include:

1. Our Linux servers and cloud storage were successfully migrated from AWS to Google Cloud.
2. Our automatic Python-based data processing pipelines were: 
   1. updated to a more modern Python version (3.11).
   2. made more stable/reliable via refactoring and numerous bug fixes.
   3. made more flexible and adaptable to new features via modularization and code cleanup.
   4. improved with more complete and clear logging of processes and events.
3. Implemented a new User Accounts feature on our website for thousands of citizen scientist users: 
   1. Added account log in, user information registration, and profile pages to view user data.
   2. Connected this to a custom-built backend to output products from our data pipelines to cloud storage and SQL databases for access by the web frontend via new API's.
   3. Low latency for webpage and user profile loading.
4. Implemented a new website feature to generate webpages for pre-defined astronomical events on demand.

Anand and the dev team were very responsive to our needs and goals, which we adjusted on weekly (sometimes daily) timescales. Team members were swapped in or out based on the expertise and effort level we required.

Communication about progress or problems from the developers could sometimes be slow or incomplete, though I attribute some of this to them being contracted by us only part-time so we were not their only concern.
