I’m the CEO of Go Together, Inc. Our mission is to help people get where they need to go through their trusted network. Using our transportation technology, people can sign up to request or give rides as a shared resource. Our current verticals include schools, youth sports, and voter carpooling.

What challenge were you trying to address with Technology Rivers?

After our acquisition of CarpooltoSchool, we continued to work with a West Coast developer on contract. However, it can be difficult to work with a vendor that’s primarily in a different time zone, so we wanted to find a resource who could work more closely with our product development process.

Technology Rivers joined the project to help us refine our CarpooltoSchool mobile apps. Since then, they’ve developed our second mobile app product and are now helping us revamp our first product’s web app.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

We’ve completed two major projects together. For the first project, they resolved the bugs in our CarpooltoSchool mobile apps before enhancing existing features. The team then created a new UX design and added new features to match. We’re currently discussing potential ways to revamp the web version of the app in the near future.

Technology Rivers also developed and launched the MVP of our second product called GoTogethertoVote. It’s an iOS/Android app that targets campaigners and campaign-related organizations that are trying to galvanize new voters. With our product, campaigners can give a larger portion of their constituency access to reliable transportation to and from polls.

The app features a driver side and a passenger side. After creating a profile, people can offer or request rides to the polls. Our technology automatically connects users based on their submitted schedules. Campaigners can also see a log of all transactions in real time, which helps them ensure that their constituency is actually getting to the polls.

What is the team composition?

Ghazenfer Mansoor (Founder, Technology Rivers) oversees all of the development processes, but we also have direct access to a project manager and a minimum of two developers on a consistent basis. The team size varies depending on the project; at our highest, we’ve worked with seven technical resources.

How did you come to work with Technology Rivers?

We met each other through the Washington DC tech community and struck up a conversation. At the time, we had worked with a larger development firm to deploy our mobile apps. We decided we wanted to work with a smaller, more agile shop that could work on our legacy technology and also develop future offerings.

After talking to Ghazenfer, I felt confident moving forward with the project, and his past clients gave nothing but positive feedback. The most important factors were communicating regularly and having clear access to the project management and development team. This allowed us to ensure that everyone understood our goals and would build our product accordingly.

Their work started in June 2017 and is ongoing. We launched the MVP of GoTogethertoVote to meet the 2018 election cycle and are currently working to implement additional features this year. We’re also discussing ways to revisit the CarpooltoSchool web app.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Technology Rivers completed the work as requested, keeping our first product live while reimagining its mobile experience. The GoTogethertoVote project was particularly intense because we needed to launch in time for the 2018 election cycle. The team working with our technical lead divided the tasks into comprehensive sprints, delivering the app in about six weeks.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

We use Slack to communicate and have stand-up calls as necessary. For the carpooling revamp, we had weekly calls, and the voting product involved five calls a week. We did face a few challenges; since their developers were offshore, they weren’t always available on our schedule. However, they met our deadlines.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Despite the tight timeframe, they delivered the projects on schedule.

Are there any areas they could improve?

As with any outsourced tech partner, it’s important to prioritize the customer’s feedback and needs. Providing alternative solutions and laying out all options ahead of time are critical.

You should discuss your project’s complexity in the initial stages. Have written specifications and solutions the teams mutually agreed upon before getting started on the development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Technology Rivers is our software developer and helped do the actual development function for our platform. We gave them a wireframe and they developed both the web application and mobile apps for iOS and Android. They also help us look at the big picture by playing a strategic role. They’re focusing on building the architecture the right way in order to make our platform scalable for the long run.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Being a lean startup, we need to work fast. Technology Rivers has been able to deploy early stage beta forms of our platform really quickly. We got feedback on those pieces, and they’re able to iterate and make some tweaks and changes. We’ve been through that process dozens of times with them. Now the platform and its many elements are ready to be rigorously tested. Their code is outstanding and well-documented. Thanks to them, we know that it works.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

I’m pleased with their project management skills. We need to understand exactly what we're developing in order for them to give us detailed project milestones. Even in the face of ambiguity, they’re able to put together a high-level project framework. They gave us an estimate of what it might cost and the time frame. They proposed strategies to make sure the project gets to where we need it to be, even if we didn’t have exact requirements.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their biggest strength is being able to develop, test, and iterate in fast developmental sprints. They're really good about thinking about the larger architectural picture. For example, how to get our platform where it needs to be in a way that's going to scale so we’re not rebuilding everything. I’ve been extremely pleased with their work.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don't have anything negative to say. Sometime we have to do calls late at night because of time zones, but that's a very acceptable annoyance.

I’m the founder of a social shopping company. Our members receive a percentage of the company’s revenue by meeting specific participation requirements. We’re a continually iterating company that returns value to our users.

What challenge were you trying to address with Technology Rivers?

Being a decent coder myself, I created an entity that programmed the crucial aspects of our social network. However, I needed full-scale development firm to build out the platform’s framework and integrate it with new features. My ultimate goal is to restructure the entire codebase.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Technology Rivers helps us improve our software by introducing new features and functionalities into the source code. We sell discounted gift cards as a revenue generator, so their team integrated aftermarket and newly purchased e-gift cards into our system's inventory. They tied the inventory back to merchant accounts so that our constituents can buy those products seamlessly. That feature allows users to text us the value they want to spend at a specific establishment. Then, we send a gift card to their phone via text. The gift card can also be redeemed by accessing our platform’s interface. Technology Rivers made that by possible by integrating original code with software packages like Twilio.

They also maintain a dashboard that enables our constituents to view what they’ve saved and what they owe. That dashboard also ties into other licensed software that we utilize, so they’ve done a great job of bridging that space.

From a technological perspective, they’re able to use code templates and can script their own as well. They’re using a combination of basic SQL server functionalities and Amazon RDS to create the database code that integrates with our graphical UI. In addition to scripting a unique codebase, they also implemented code that’s been previously formatted into templates.

We interact with 5–6 resources from Technology Rivers. That includes their VP, the director of operations, and several developers.

How did you come to work with Technology Rivers?

I found them by looking for vendors on Clutch.co. The categories, reviews, and ratings on Clutch’s website provided enough visibility for me to answer the right questions. I considered several firms, but Technology Rivers offered competitive pricing and geographical accessibility. Considering those factors, I decided to hire them.

We expect to spend $250,000–$500,000. The total cost might even go beyond that if everything goes well.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working with Technology Rivers in November 2017 and it’s an ongoing engagement. We continue to grow, so I expect our relationship to continue if they’re willing to provide the kind of support we need.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

The confidence that our customers enjoy is directly related to the rate, pace, and quality that they produce. Considering the platform has 1,200 clients so far, their satisfaction is important to us. Technology Rivers identifies and explains the tasks they plan to accomplish. They send updates if minor issues occur, but they’ve never missed a final deadline.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

Their VP and director of operations actively provide recommendations and counsel. I appreciate how they interact with us. They listen to client concerns and extend value independently by presenting actionable solutions. We have a daily call with their offshore developers, and it’s often a rolling conversation. We’re opposites in terms of culture, but I appreciate the international aspect of the process. The time zone difference hasn’t been an issue thus far.

Overall, their responsiveness and ability to meet deadlines are top-notch. They allowed us to communicate via our preferred channel but eventually made recommendations that improved our productivity. We initially used Slack to convey our requirements, but they suggested we switch over to Twilio. Using a single program to prioritize our needs and communicate objectives made managing the project more efficient.

Their availability, attentiveness, and communication skills set them apart from similar vendors.

Are there any areas they could improve?

Despite being a tough critic with high expectations, I don’t have an issue with how they perform. They help me understand the platform’s needs through conversation, and that process has worked well thus far. I’m interested to see how they’re going to scale, but I can’t provide constructive feedback regarding that at this time.

Technology Rivers has built a reliable product, with a fantastic quality of work. All of our users are happy with it. The platform is stable, fast, and functional. It’s simple and straightforward to use.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

When we were in active development, I spoke to Ghazenfer twice a week. If there is any maintenance needed, I talk to him two to three times a month when necessary.

He’s always available and responds immediately. I can call, text, or use Slack to communicate with him. Their team finishes their work ahead of time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’ve worked with other software vendors in the software world and usually, the time of deployment gets pushed back. With Technology Rivers, their team delivers what they promise and ahead of schedule. They also only bill for the time needed.

Be clear and specific with what features and requirements you want in the software. Once they have those guidelines, Technology Rivers will accurately follow them and make your product a reality.

What challenge were you trying to address with Technology Rivers?

We were looking to build the next iteration of our web platform. We needed a mobile-friendly UI. We had a built out version, but we needed it to really be responsive, have a good design, and be open to integrations with university systems, if necessary. We knew we had a great designer in-house, but we needed to find a dev team that could keep up with his ability to test and work quickly.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They worked off our pre-existing platform and in-house designs. They brought those designs to life and got them working, code wise. They revamped our backend that had some of the features and they added a couple of feature functionalities into our backend and frontend. They made it a smoother and easier process. They used React Native, Ruby on Rails, Amazon Web Services, and GitHub.

We heard about them through a connection who is also running a startup. We were looking for a team that could build incredible work. Our previous team was not up to par. We had a conversation with Ghazenfer, felt he was a good fit, and went from there.

We tested parts of the UI and received feedback that our users loved it. Our designer designed it, but Technology Rivers was flexible enough to be able to make any changes that our designer needed in real time to make our product a lot better for our users. They had a great turnaround time and they wrote quality code. They ran the whole project effectively.

They were spot on all across the board. They did a great job. They’re responsive, have high quality of communication, and really walked us through a lot of the key steps along the way. They gave us suggestions on how to make changes. I have a lot of respect for them.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re really professional. I wanted it to be mechanical and it was. Our experience with our last development team was a very haphazard process. Ghazenfer is very professional, very streamline, and you know what you’re getting. I like that we knew what we were going to get and that there were clear expectations.

Have a basic understanding of where your technology lives and understand how to get access to your own databases. It maximizes the time and efficiency of working with them.

I was brought in to commercialize the technology and bring it to the next level. I immediately recognized the need for a good partner to help finish the software for the 2.0 version. A talented team that could bring us to that next stage was critical for our success.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They added features and functionality based on customer feedback from our pilot phase. We had an MVP but needed to make it more valuable for our clients. Software compliance was a key part of the project. They also improved the user experience and helped us with strategic places to focus our spending. Whenever they develop new versions or functionality, we evaluate each element and troubleshoot it together until it works. If something breaks, they fix it immediately.

I mainly work with the CEO but have also interacted with other team members. Everyone in the team is great.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We hear from users on a daily basis and can track their use of the software. We have great feedback from university users and specific functions we can incorporate into the next version. User experiences with this software are great.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

They know how to take feedback and transform it into something tangible. Their questions are phenomenal and they translate customer needs into actual functionality. I’m not a coder, and their solutions almost feel like magic. They’re very good at communicating in a user-friendly way to non-technical people.

Everyone from the team is great and we have a good working relationship. It’s occasionally difficult to coordinate schedules with the team in Pakistan but they’re always responsive. My contact in the U.S. can relay my needs to the rest of the team directly, so we have a couple options open for communication.

We use Trello to track changes and a variety of conference call capabilities, including Google Hangouts and UberConference.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They’re a delight to work with. They are problem solvers, down to earth, and easy to talk to. They’re much more sympathetic than other companies I’ve worked with in the past and explain their process in a way that is easy to understand.

Are there any areas they could improve?

They occasionally take a little longer than we would hope but that’s normal for this kind of relationship. Even though we wish some development timelines moved faster, Technology Rivers is very good at setting expectations and then exceeding them.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Communication is key. Be open and upfront about your expectations and your time horizon. If you can bundle your needs together and work for a contiguous period of time, you’ll have an easier time than running smaller projects. We worked intensely for several months, then waited for customer feedback before resuming work. In retrospect, we would have benefited from more continuity. This is a fairly general suggestion, and not specific to them.

Technology Rivers provided us the expertise we wanted—they know how to ask the right questions in order to determine how to best reach a solution. As a result of their problem-solving and timely communication, I'm better able to interpret how our products are being received.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

We have an internal project management office, so we don’t have a specific manager with Technology Rivers. However, the requirements analyst for our current web application project is very experienced, so we can rely on her to suggest ideas and solutions. Even though she's not a project manager, she has the insight to help us with project management.

They’ve always responded in a timely manner and always make deadlines. We communicate via email, phone calls, web meetings, screen share, and instant messenger.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They have the skill and reliability we need. Our team trusts them, so if we have a challenging project that requires creative solutions, we know we can go to them.

I would start big picture: approach Technology Rivers with your design or idea and be open to their suggestions, rather than simply hiring them to complete the work you think you need. Even if a future client already has a mature technology or existing product, they can still benefit from a consultation, especially about solution design.

I am the former chief creative officer of Carney, a company primarily focused on technology-facilitated training products typically—but not exclusively—for federal government agencies. I managed a cross-functional team of digital artist programmers and quality assurance professionals.

What challenge were you trying to address with Technology Rivers?

We needed to develop two separate iOS-based applications for workplace training and personalized learning.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

They developed two iOS applications. One was a web-mobile hybrid app for leadership skills training and the other was a mobile personalized learning health app that integrated with fitness trackers. For both, we worked collaboratively on the design. We provided graphic mockups of what we wanted the applications to look like, especially on the frontend, Technology Rivers would make suggestions, create it, we would review their work, and the product would continue from there.

The training application provided customizable trivia that agencies could put into their leadership training toolbox and use as a formal training or a performance support tool—either in the classroom or over e-learning—for a particular set of skills. We included a competition leaderboard that connected leadership networks and allowed the experience to become like a game.

We developed that app with web technologies but made it available over mobile devices using iOS and a single code base.

The second application was a mobile app and allowed the user to input assessment information about themselves. The app would develop and adapt based on the user's education. It develops content that takes advantage of the data and leads the user down a certain learning path. It’s a constant loop of evaluation and adjusting.

I interfaced directly with Ghazenfer (CEO, Technology Rivers) and he was really the face of the project. Additionally, we worked with offshore backend and frontend software engineers.

How did you come to work with Technology Rivers?

I let my colleagues know that I was looking for software engineers, and an employee of mine introduced me to Ghazenfer.

These two projects were within the $50,000 range.

What is the status of this engagement?

I worked with them on these two projects, which lasted from 2014–2016. However, Carney developed a sister company who is currently working with Technology Rivers.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We measured project success by comparing our progress and results with the project brief. We wanted to make sure that we met all of our goals in terms of schedule, quality, and functionality. If in our reviews, we felt like those expectations weren’t met, we would go back and work on it until we were satisfied. We ended up with a product that we were all proud of.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

With each project, Ghazenfer wanted to make sure that we, as clients, had complete access to the project so we used cloud-based management tools like Basecamp and Amazon Cloud Services, which made the project management easy and transparent. We were able to look at project progress at any point in time, which was especially helpful working with an offshore agency. We found that our review comments and feedback were typically implemented within 24–48 hours.

Ghazenfer always made himself available and would regularly come in for face-to-face meetings. He was very responsive in regards to our feedback, and we would always see evidence of that in future iterations.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Technology Rivers has a wide variety of platform toolsets. I always had confidence that they knew what they were talking about and could make helpful recommendations based off of our requirements.

There is also a very strong client focus that Ghazenfer brings to the company. He wants to make sure that every client is satisfied with the product outcome. He’s extremely focused on customer satisfaction in his work.

Are there any areas they could improve?

There is nothing that stands out as a real pain point. With every software development project, I look back and try to identify areas where we could improve, for example having more efficient iterations or better iterative quality, but there is nothing I would suggest Technology Rivers changing.

My development team was working on several projects with tight timelines. We engaged to Technology Rivers to provide resources and assist with product development.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Technology Rivers has acted as our development team for multiple projects. They’ve built HIPAA compliant mobile apps using React Native and the MEAN stack. Our internal team provides the design work. However, it’s a collaborative process. Both teams give each other feedback throughout development. Their deliverables are essentially healthcare apps related to education or public health. They’ve also created apps that connect users to healthcare providers or solely revolve around patient safety. They’re currently working on three separate projects for us.

A project manager is our primary point of contact. We also work directly with the software engineers building the products.

How did you come to work with Technology Rivers?

They were introduced to me by another company I’m a shareholder in. One of my developers quit close to a project deadline and Technology Rivers was the first company that came to mind. They were able to quickly join development and help us out. After that, we realized they could be valuable partners.

We conduct code reviews of their work and never have issues with quality. Everything they deliver is polished, so I assume they implement similar procedures. Bugs do come up, but we’re very transparent about them.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

Working with their team has been great. They have a lot of engineers with different experiences and expertise, so talking with them is always enlightening. They meet every deadline I assign to them and we’ve never had issues. They’ve even pulled sleepless nights to ensure prompt delivery. I prefer not to do that to people, but crunch times are sometimes necessary.

We use Slack to communicate and have periodic check-ins. We also use Jira for project management. This allows us to see what they prioritize and what they’ve accomplished in real time.

What did you find most impressive about them?

The work ethic I’ve seen from Technology Rivers is unparalleled. They make magic happen. Their ability to jump into a problem at a moment’s notice is very impressive as well.

They’re a growing team, so there’s nothing I’d specifically point out at this time.

A lot of people think they have themselves a complete plan, but then repeatedly add to the scope as the project continues. It’s important to spend the time and scope out your project appropriately. That’s more general advice, but I tell it to everyone I work with.

I’m the CEO of Sickweather, a real-time map of human health. We forecast the spread of various illnesses around the world.

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Technology Rivers?

We were looking to build an Android app to house our platform.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

The Sickweather app leverages GPS geolocation technology and push notifications to alert users in real time when they enter “sick zones”, which are geofenced areas we create from the health data we collect. The data includes frequency of reported illnesses including strep throat, the flu, whooping cough, and others. Users can contribute their own reports to crowdsource data as well.

The Technology Rivers team was responsible for the entire Android development process. Our internal iOS team had already established a design that Technology Rivers adjusted to suit the Android user interface before starting development.

We worked with a project manager and a small group of developers.

How did you come to work with Technology Rivers?

I initially met the president and CEO through networking in the Baltimore tech space. We had been working with another offshore developer and the app they built had a significant number of issues. Technology Rivers essentially rebuilt the entire app when they came on.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve invested $100,000-$250,000.

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in 2015. Since completing the Android app, we’ve retained them for their services in other areas and they’ve provided ongoing support as necessary. They also recently took over on providing support for our iOS app.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We do our own QA testing in-house and we haven’t encountered any major problems. We also monitor feedback on the Google Play store, and we’re at about a 4-star rating right now. Technology Rivers does a great job with responding to bug reports on the Google Play store and addresses them very efficiently.

How did Technology Rivers perform from a project management standpoint?

I’ve had no problems at all with their performance. Everything has stayed on schedule and we’re happy with the deliverables. We communicate primarily via Slack and added them to our company channels to facilitate real-time collaboration.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their professionalism, timeliness, and quality of work have been outstanding.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We haven’t had any issues with their team. Their communication is great, especially for an overseas firm, and they’re always punctual despite the time difference. Their billing process has been transparent, and we’re happy to be working with them.

Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?

They’re more than just an app developer. The team has a very broad set of skills, so keep an open mind in determining the project scope.
