I am the Creative Director of an organization and online platform proving professional and educational resources for screenwriters and filmmakers.

For what projects/services did your company hire SuperBrand?

We were on the brink of begging a website rebuild and realized we needed an outside perspective on our brand, logo and messaging before we could move forward.

How did you select SuperBrand and what were the deciding factors?

We spoke with the Superbrand team about their process, past projects as well as our goals and expectations. I would say the deciding factor to go with Superbrand was the way Gil and the team seemed to understand our goals and vision from the get-go and ease any concerns about roadblocks we might run into in evaluating our brand with an outside consultant.

Describe the project in detail and walk through the stages of the project.

We entered into an extensive discovery period that included questionnaires and 3 zoom meetings to discuss our brand voice and look/feel. We then received three designs of our homepage and an additional sales page as well as logo options. We went through a few iterations and additional discussions until we arrived at the final drafts. We then received all assets and Illustrator files to work with.

We worked with a project manager, a designer and a copywriter.

RESULTS & FEEDBACK

Can you share any outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

We are still months away from launching our website, but have been able to develop a website style guide and several more branded assets from the rebrand exercise and have a better understanding of our voice overall. We are excited to launch the finished product.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

The workflow was very efficient. We were given ample time for feedback and to absorb the assets we were given, and Superbrand was quick to turn-around on their end.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

We were impressed by how quickly and deeply they were able to understand our voice in our very niche industry. They also helped us think outside of the box in the way we are communicating the value of our services. They helped us to realize what sets us apart from competitors and how to effectively show that.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

There could have been a bit more organization of files and assets like a single drive folder to reference, but other than that we were very happy with the process.

I’m the CEO of Superlativ Media Group, a publishing company. We aggregate reviews online and filter spam and fake reviews for our consumer advocates. We have websites and publications in various verticals. Gadget Review is our biggest one with a million visitors per month, and I’m the managing partner there.

What challenge were you trying to address with SuperBrand?

We needed help to build a new brand identity and equity for the 20 million–30 million users we were looking for. We wanted to refresh the brand identity, messaging, and the whole UI for Gadget Review.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

In the beginning, SuperBrand helped us with the position statements, brand identity, and UX/UI of the site. First, we worked with them to come up with our initial brand book and to implement a basic redesign to our site. We had weekly meetings for a couple of months to define our core values, capability, tagline, color scheme, typography, and a new logo.

This initial engagement went very well, so we decided to hire SuperBrand to further execute on a complete redesign of our site. We meet with Gil (Founder) and a designer twice a week to work on the website’s wireframe. Gil acts as the creative director, and I act as the brand strategist. We had another wireframe built before, but we ended up working so much better with the new one that we scrapped our previous wireframe.

SuperBrand has been able to add the new brand identity to the site, and they've come up with the awards and the different rating systems. They’ve also brought into life new characters like a brand character called "the people’s watchdog." They have all these different elements coming together on different pages like the product review page, the buying guide page, and the resource homepage.

We’re now in production and meet twice a week. We’re working together for close to 50 hours a month in a retainer agreement. They also work on our copywriting for our in-brand pages, which takes an additional day of the week.

What is the team composition?

I work mainly with Gil and a designer. In the beginning, Gil was the one doing the designs for us, but he wanted to step back and take a creative director role. He decided to hire a designer, and I really appreciated that.

Gil interviewed around 50–100 designers to find the particular type of design that we wanted to commit to. It was hard to find a part-time freelancer for that role. We found someone that understood product reviews and had a background in that area, as well as in product design.

We’re speaking truth to power with what we do. We call out fake reviews online, so we wanted to have alignment in our mindset. Gil hit a homerun hiring this individual.

How did you come to work with SuperBrand?

I met Gil through a mutual friend. I’d done branding and wireframes myself, and I was looking for someone that could either match or knew more than what I knew about this subject. I had known him for a year before hiring SuperBrand for this project.

We’ve spent around $30,000.

We started working together around September 2020, and our engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

This engagement has achieved a significant impact on our business. Our brand equity has increased our conversion rate. The initial redesign took us forward, and we started seeing an impact on user engagement and traffic.

We still needed to do a full rebrand where we pivoted from testing products to testing the testers and grading the consumers. Gil has helped us transition and figure out our language and identity of radical transparency — we’re becoming a true consumer advocate. He has brought to life an old brand that had been around for a while. He gamified it and made it fun but trustworthy at the same time.

How did SuperBrand perform from a project management standpoint?

We use Airtable to manage the project, and we communicate via Slack.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Gil is a true artist. He’s a painter and a film director, so he has a great artistic vision. Not many companies have an artist as their leader. That’s the reason SuperBrand is a very fresh company compared to others.

Gil has worked with the Bob Marley Foundation and was behind a Bob Marley album's art. He also won an Emmy years ago for animation on a famous cartoon. Not everyone is as hip and has the same background as him. He does more than visual branding — he’s a full-stack.

The rest of SuperBrand’s team aligns with the same way of thinking. They offer enterprise organization and hip, edgy artistic vision — it’s hard to find those two aspects combined. They’re very well organized on time, know how to direct, and can work under tight deadlines, but they’re also artistic and creative. SuperBrand feels like a dual-brained organization.

I can’t think of anything SuperBrand could improve on.

Be clear on your objectives and the feeling you want to evoke with your brand experience. Brush up on branding styles so you know how to speak with designers and branding people. It’ll help you communicate more effectively and get more efficiency from your engagement.

We’ve worked with SuperBrand on a few projects to identify the unique selling proposition of our clients. We help them with brand strategy, to create messaging for their website, and to identify how to talk to their audiences in order to make sales and get leads.

SuperBrand helps us with brand strategy and messaging. We have an in-depth questionnaire that we send to the end client. Based on those answers, SuperBrand conducts strategy calls and creates roadmaps, which include sample messaging that end clients can use in all their marketing. They also give an outline of the new brand and its unique selling points through short taglines. They do logo design with some clients as well.

They were referred to us, and looking at the founder’s depth of experience, the companies that he’s worked with, and his past work convinced us to take the leap and work with him exclusively.

Branding is a long-term game, and it’s really hard to measure the results of a good brand, so I don’t have any proof except happy clients.

Be prepared for a collaborative experience. You know your business best, and they can distill amazing messages from the deep dive that you do in the beginning, so be ready to commit and work closely with them to really nail down what your message should be.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

Superbrand delivered an amazing brand story and incredible website experience. We used to have a hard time explaining what we do to clients and prospects because we have a very unique business model. After working with Superbrand, we have a concise brand story and a website that shows our tastes and the caliber of our work.Moreover, we’ve seen a 40% increase in inbound requests and client inquiries. Our marketing campaigns are much stronger because we have a strong foundation and brand story thanks to the process Superbrand used for us.

They were extremely buttoned up and clear on timelines and deliverable expectations. The team was reasonable and communicative about what to expect and when.We primarily communicated through virtual meetings, emails, and messaging apps.
