I’m the COO of Workstation Health. We’re an ergonomics management company that uses cutting-edge software to prevent injury and help people work productively.

What challenge were you trying to address with Smart Gamma?

We approached Smart Gamma to hire an experienced QA resource. Later, our engagement with them expanded to include frontend development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Smart Gamma allocated one of their DevOps specialists to be our main QA developer. He supports our PHP platform by performing manual bug tests and creating automated test programs. The functional testing is done to ensure we have a consistent build throughout the whole codebase. He’s also the primary resource responsible for our AWS infrastructure. Therefore, he’s essentially in charge of entire development and deployment pipeline.

We have limited designers on staff, so we engaged a frontend developer from their team to support our website’s UX overhaul. That person assists our internal team by implementing new designs. The site’s frontend consists of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

As I mentioned, we work with a frontend developer and a QA resource.

We initially found them through Upwork.

How much have you invested with them?

We’ve spent $80,000 CAD (approximately $60,000 USD) thus far.

We started working together in October 2017 and the engagement is ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We work so closely with them that we don’t track a lot of metrics. Smart Gamma’s resources are much more productive than other companies we’ve worked with in the past. They provide significant value for the price we pay. To be honest, I don't know what we’d do if we lost our QA guy. It’s hard to imagine that someone could do a better job as consistently as he does.

How did Smart Gamma perform from a project management standpoint?

We manage development tasks through Jira and their quite familiar with that tool. Their QA developer even built additional integrations and tests into our Jira platform to streamline various processes.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Their QA developer is a master in his field. We brought him in at the beginning of development, and he’s been incredibly helpful the whole time. We didn’t know what we were doing, but he had the expertise to guide us into a set up that works for us. I also appreciate their flexibility when it comes to working odd hours. That helps our products me their deadlines.

Are there any areas they could improve?

No. We haven’t had any problems related to billing or administration. Overall, they’re easy to work with.

Do you have any advice for potential customers?

Future clients should have a good understating of what they need to accomplish. That way, Smart Gamma can match them up with the right people.

We needed a partner for full-cycle interactive software development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

They did all frontend and backend development following our requirements and design specifications for our three-part recruiting software. They created algorithms and did the matching for the software. Other services included testing and creating APIs for mobile and Google Apps.

Our software matches temporary job candidates with interested companies, and it also requires third-party access by a supporting agency. Each of those parties has access to different functions.

What is the team composition?

My main point of contact is the project manager. I sometimes contact the developers directly.

I found them through Upwork. I was happy with the initial results and our engagement grew from there.

We have spent 300,000 euros ($341,250).

They’re very straightforward and honest and I really enjoy working with them. They’re nice people.

How did Smart Gamma perform from a project management standpoint?

I’m very happy with our project manager. We use Slack, we Skype twice a week, and we meet in person once a year. They currently make tickets on Jira, but in the beginning, they did everything in Symphony. We did another project with them where they did the backend in Symphony and the frontend in Angular. They react very quickly when issues arise.

What did you find most impressive about them?

From the very beginning, I was impressed by their response time and their problem-solving ability.

Are there any areas they could improve?

We’ve worked with the same backend developers throughout the project, but we’ve experienced more turnover on the frontend team than we’d like.

Clients should be straightforward about their needs in order to establish an efficient workflow.

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

Smart Gamma took our Project to the next level. We are creating a Web based tool for quality control testing within our company. The tool manages recording units while distributing data to the end user as well as to multiple SQL databases. Incorporating communication to multiple endpoints and artifactories turned the project into a real mammoth task. We had the pleasure of working with Smart Gamma, a top-notch software development team, and we couldn't be more satisfied with the results. 

They played a crucial role in getting our complex website up and running smoothly. Standing on a solid software architecture with a high level of security and maintainability, now more complex features seem to roll of the line with ease. From the initial consultation to the final product, Smart Gamma demonstrated their expertise and professionalism every step of the way. 

They took the time to understand our specific requirements and effectively translated them into a functional and visually appealing website.
