We needed to do a complete Website redesign and backend move to Shopify platform in order to modernize and improve our customer shopping experience. We needed to create a more robust digital omni channel marketing and engagement program to grow our business and strategically position ourselves in the health and wellness ecosystem.

Our aim is to better serve our customers by showing up where they are, educate them about traditional medicine and the high quality products we offer, and share helpful information about staying well and healthy, and be viewed as trusted partners in helping to support their overall health. The key deliverables are to grow online sales, increase online presence/brand awareness and grow customer engagement.

• Our revenue has grown within reasonable expectations, our email marketing program has grown significantly, and our SEO strategy is showing great results, however our social media presence still needs work but that's because we focused on email marketing in the first year and haven't applied as much pressure to it as it needed. But we expect that to grow in the next year.

They are a small boutique firm so they managed projects and deliverables within reason. They are always positive and do their best to address urgencies as they arise. The owners Jacqueline and Justin are very hands on and continue to be when we ask for it. We really enjoy working with them — everyone on their team is very customer-oriented.

Whenever friction does arise, as they often do in this type of work, they always handle it with great professionalism and a good attitude, which I as the head of the marketing department very much appreciate.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

I think that while they are a boutique firm they provide some of the best work I've seen in the industry. I've work in much larger companies and with larger marketing firms in my career, and I'm impressed by them because the work they do is as high quality if not better than some of the firms i've worked for in the past who are larger and more expensive. They are great value in my personal opinion.

Are there any areas for improvement or something SeedX Inc. could have done differently?

I think this happens in all firms who try to manage deadlines but they can sometimes try to hedge the work or require us to give them more notice for projects than we can give just because we are also a small company and things happen fast and more last minute than others. We are also a family business so sometimes, senior management requires something to be prioritized and turned around quicker than they are used to and that has sometimes caused friction but they end up making it work so that's ok.

We are still new to each other and learning how to work together so I suspect things will be even better than now. I always see improvement happening in all aspects of our working relationship so I have no real concerns at the moment about areas they explicitly need improvement.

SeedX worked with us to truly and fully understand our niche market and our particular edge within the larger industry.

From those meetings of drilling deeply into our operations, they created a site beyond our wildest dreams. Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We've already seen considerable growth in the online, direct-to-consumer portion of our business in the 6 months we've been working together. Last year, in part thanks to their marketing efforts we had our most successful holiday season to date, and we are continuing to see increased growth in our wholesale and subscription programs as per the goals we've set with them.

SeedX has consistently been quick to communicate any questions or concerns they may have for us and have always responded to and resolved any of the minor issues we've brought up with them. In addition, we've seen our social advertising ROAS increase significantly - well over 100% since they took over the account. The team has created thoughtful, creative content to help maintain consistent messages across our social media pages so that we can put our focus on what we do best - baking bagels.

How effective was the workflow between your team and theirs?

Overall, workflow and communication between our two teams have been going very smoothly. We receive updates from their team multiple times a week with the new content they've created for our social media pages and email marketing campaigns. Our biweekly meetings also help keep our teams on the same page and allow us to work on new ideas for the future. In the rare case that we've had a more pressing issue that needed resolving, they have always been quick to respond and provide us with effective solutions.

We've really enjoyed seeing all the content that SeedX has created for our social media pages. They've consistently presented us with creative, fun ideas that have helped us create a unified message and look across all platforms, which is an area we were seriously lacking before we hired SeedX.

We requested SeedX more frequent updates, and they quickly responded and accommodated our request. As of now, there are no other areas for improvement.

We wanted to work with a female owned, diverse agency with fresh ideas and that is exactly what we got with SeedX. We also wanted to ensure that we would have great communication and they were overly communicative and listened from the get go.

The web project was to primarily work on increasing loading speeds based on our limitations with a themed WordPress site and to enhance the mobile experience. For SEO we agreed on 2 high quality blog posts per month on-going to increase web traffic and conversions.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

The web project led to a 25% speed increase which is as high as we could have expected with our current set up and is better than expectations. Our mobile experience is also significantly improved. As for SEO we are still early in terms of tangible results but with both the web project and SEO we have seen about a 12% increase in web conversions and between 5-10% increase in web traffic. We are very pleased with the quality of the blog posts as well.

We wanted a young, diverse team of marketing professionals that wasn't going to provide cookie cutter plans for our business and they have exceeded expectations.

Our company mission and strategy is sharper and more focused on specific next steps. We have the ability confidently move forward in fundraising stage. We have a more detailed plan for engaging in the digital space and what a partnership would need to be for success there.

Workflow was amazing. SeedX almost instantly understood our model and really 'gets it'. They were able to answer all of our targeted questions openly and honestly and provided high-level value in real-time.

The most unique thing about SeedX was their ability to advise clearly across an array of topics using specific examples from their history. They 'wear many hats' and can connect key dots and strategies in ways that larger 'big / established' companies really suffer to. This is huge.

First, SeedX Inc. provided consultation and gave me suggestions for changes to my website, such as which platform to use. They redesigned and developed my website on Shopify. During development, they provided mockups of the site and made changes as needed based on my feedback.

Currently, SeedX Inc. updates my website and helps me with logo and graphic design work for my podcasts.

We mainly communicate via email, and they use Asana on their end. I give them feedback on what they show me, and they make any necessary adjustments.

I own Bees & Trees Mānuka Honey. We're a wholesaler and retailer of mānuka honey that we produce and package in New Zealand and then sell here in the US. We sell direct-to-consumer (D2C) over our website, and we also sell through a network of independent retailers.

What challenge were you trying to address with SeedX?

We were trying to increase the business we were getting from our website, so basically, our D2C business. We needed someone to help us connect with more consumers.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

SeedX provides an entire suite of digital marketing services and web design. The first thing they did was assess our Shopify site in terms of SEO and design. The team came up with a complete redesign and created a new color palette. The team came up with a lot of ideas on how to better communicate through graphics and images. Aside from changing the look and feel, they also shot new product images and lifestyle images to bring our product to life instead of just relying on text. 

Afterward, they moved on to email marketing, Facebook advertising, and SEO. Before moving forward with their marketing efforts, we had discussions about how the content we post will help us do better on search rankings and algorithms. The team conducted keyword research to identify the terms people use when they look for similar products. They then created content using those keywords to increase our search rankings. SeedX pretty much does that on their own, and then they share it with us so I can review the content we’re publishing. I sometimes make a couple of edits to make sure the information is correct, and then I approve it for publishing. The team then helps us organize the content on our site and share it through email marketing. 

What is the team composition?

I work with three people. On a daily basis, I interface with Ty (VP of Business Solutions), who acts as our account manager and does our email marketing. I also coordinate with an ads manager and their CEO.

How did you come to work with SeedX?

I met Ty at a food show a few years ago. I talked to him about my product, and he became a big fan. When he started working at SeedX, he reached out to me and asked if we needed help. The timing was great because we had just decided to take our business to the next level. We liked what they pitched, so we gave them a try.

How much have you invested with them?

Our initial spend was $15,000 for the foundational work, like the website redesign and some of the SEO work. Since February, we’ve started spending $1,000 each month on email marketing, SEO, advertising, content creation, and so on. 

What is the status of this engagement?

We started working together in August 2020, and it’s ongoing.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

The work SeedX has done adds a lot of value to our business. Quantitatively, we’ve increased our sales and web traffic. Our conversion rates are high, and the amount of income we’ve been getting on our site has been growing. The return on ad spend and the number of sales our newsletters have generated have been satisfactory. We feel that their digital marketing efforts are working. Qualitatively, we’ve gotten good feedback on the site’s look and feel and our email’s designs. Customers really appreciate how information is presented in the emails.

How did SeedX perform from a project management standpoint?

They do really well on project management — the team stays on schedule and delivers what they promised. We had regular meetings to talk about their progress. To review the content they created, we used Filestage, where they uploaded documents for us to comment on.

What did you find most impressive about them?

I’m most pleased with how invested their team is in understanding our product — they were really excited about learning about mānuka honey. There was a lot of information that they had to digest to make sense of our company and how we produce, test, rate, and label the honey. SeedX has come up to speed quickly. Over the years, we’ve brought in other vendors, but they never took the time to learn about us, and I ended up developing the content. However, SeedX has done a great job with content. When I review it, it’s always at least 90% correct. They’re doing well.

Are there any areas they could improve?

I don’t have any specific suggestions for improvement. They’re doing a great job, and we’re delighted.

Stay close to the process and have good, frequent communication. Give the team feedback and input along the way so that your expectations are clear.
